"It's My Story And I'm Sticking To it"
One of the hardest things for a coach to do is call a player in his office and tell him his services are no longer needed and good luck in your endeavors. Every player has that in the back of their mind troughout their NFL career and it makes it hard not knowing if you'll have a job tomorrow. Below is a list of the 53 man roster plus one Reserve Quarterback and 8 man Practice Squad. I know I wouldn't want to be McDaniels' shoes and have to choose who goes and who stays, that would be very difficult to do. I will start off the offense, then the defense and on to the practice squad. Ultimate cuts will be last.
Offense:
Quarterback: Kyle Orton, Chris Simms. 2
Running Backs: Knowshon Moreno, Peyton Hillis, Correll Buckhalter, LaMont Jordan, Darius Walker. 5
Tight Ends: Daniel Graham, Tony Scheffer, Jeb Putzier, Richard Quinn. 4
Wide Receivers: Eddie Royal, Brandon Marshall, Brandon Stokely, Kenny McKinley, Brandon Lloyd, Jabar Gaffney. 6
Center: Casey Wiegmann, Kory Lichtensteiger. 2
Guards: Ben Hamilton, Matt McChesney, Chris Kuper. 3
Tackles: Ryan Clady, Ryan Harris, Tyler Polombus. 3
25 total on offense.
Deffense:
Safety: Brian Dawkins, Reynaldo Hill, Josh Barrett, David Bruton. 4
Corner Back: Champ Bailey, Andre' Goodman, Alphonso Smith, Jack Williams. 4
Inside Line Backer: D J Williams, Wesley Woodyard, Spencer Larsen, Andra Davis, Mario Haggan. 5
Outside Line Backer: Elvis Dumervil, Darrell Reid, Robert Ayers, Tim Crowder. 4
Defensive Line: Kenny Peterson, Marcus Thomas, Ryan McBean, LeKevin Smith, Mathias Askew. 5

Jarvis will be the toughest to let go....
given all the off season issues with him contemplating retirement and all…I don’t know if he takes that too well. It’s just business but I think it might be tough to give him the axe. He’ll get signed by someone else no doubt, given that he was a first rounder not too long ago.

I can't see Jeb and Crowder making it
we might pick up a few from other teams cuts. Hillis could be the disaster TE. All about playing multiple positions for that guy.
I ride the short bus!
Jeb Putsier
He’s been making plays all over the place. I think he makes the team and we only keep 5 wides.
He felt like the man who drew the first circle. Perfect, and complete.
I'm thinking
Marquez Branson for PS, Darcel McBath on the Roster, and cut Mario Haggan. Lee Robinson would be a better project,IMO, than keeping Haggan. Mario’s ST play isn’t enough offset for the youthful exuberance of Robinson. I am still iffy on Brandon Lloyd. I happen to like Chad Jackson and Nate Swift, but those are emotional not logical choices, and Lloyd has proven able to make catches as long as he is used properly. Plus with the uncertainty surrounding B Marsh, the WR spot may be the last position cut. And if Marshall is a goner, Matthew Willis could be in the mix for the PS.

McBath
I think McBath definitely makes the roster. Probably cut Jeb Putzier. The two hardest to see go will be Moss and Chad Jackson. I don’t see the reason to keep a kicker on the practice squad, so Colquitt leaves and we might keepJackson or Putzier.
I like Jeb Putzier because he makes plays, and can catch the ball.
Quinn not much of a receiver yet but a solid blocker, I wouldn’t think Josh would go with 4 TE’s and I wouldn’t see him put Quinn on the PS because someone would grab him quick. Looks like they caught between a rock and a hard spot.

I actually had him on the roster and Kerns bye bye but couldn't do it for fear of getting blasted..LOL.
The kid can punt and kick field goals which makes him very versitlie for us.

Surprised
I was surprised to see Colquitt kick a field goal. That does give him the “versatility” advantage. If I remember correctly, the ST coach from KC coached Colquitt’s brother there (also a kicker).
Best thing for the Broncos
is to wrangle a trade for Kern (7th round pick?)
He felt like the man who drew the first circle. Perfect, and complete.
You may be right Bradley and just to cut him wouldn't be in the teams best interest.
If the team can get something in return then it’s a win win situation.
Chad Jackson will make it...he is a vertical threat. I think Lloyd is cut.

Well
I think that McBath shouldn’t be exposed to the PS. Haggan was the choice that stood out to me in your scenario. Lee Robinson didn’t look bad on ST’s and showed some aggressiveness (always a good thing for an LB) on the 2nd or 3rd team in the game on Saturday. I don’t know how the coaches rate him, but he would probably be a better risk for the PS like you have him. So’ I guess my answer is yes. LOL
I’m not picking on you though, cuz I don’t think I could do any better. I know I wouldn’t want the job of Axe man.

Agreed
Remember, all other teams have a shot at our final cuts. They have to clear waivers before signing on to the PS.
We will likely have PS members that are currently with other squads and lose a couple of guys we think we could hang on to.
Thus McBath (2nd rounder) def stays in the final 53.
I like Putzier’s effort, but there’s not room there. Same with Askew. But these guys will be available at first sign of injury.
I also don’t see a place for Brandon Lloyd if Marshall is on board. The 6th receiver will likely be Jackson.
Too tough to call now I suppose. That’s a good thing. If cuts were easy, then signs would be pointing to a rough year. Please bless no injuries show up next week – I don’t want Coach and FO to have an easy time forming the roster.
No way they put a 2nd round pick on PS....he will be claimed pronto!!!

I wouldn’t risk putting him on waivers just to get him on the practice squad

Hard to say........
I think McBath makes the roster and Haggan is playing OLB, I also think Chad Jackson makes the roster.
We gotta get nastier on D!!!!!!!!!
Reserve QB
Can anyone tell me whether the reserve QB (emergency 3rd QB) has to be part of the 53 or not? I would have thought he would have to count against either the 53 man squad or the practice squad.
He doesn't count towards the 53 man roster spot.
The catch is though, if he comes into the game at any point, Simms and Orton can’t come back in. That’s the catch 22 of the extra QB idea.

Timmy
Sorry to keep asking...
All Teams are permitted an Active List of 45 players and an Inactive List of 8 players for each regular-season and postseason game. Provided that a club has 2 QB’s on its 45-player Active List, a 3rd QB from its Inactive List is permitted to dress for the game, but can only play in emergencies.
This is from your first link, and seems to suggest that the 3rd QB needs to be on the 53 man squad, but not the 45 man game day active list. Last year, Hackney would have been that guy, but was on our practice squad. So could you please clarify it for me?
That is right timm
53 is the max limit for the (key word) Active roster. We suit up 45 men each week, plus one for emergency QB. In our case, that would be Tom Brandstater, who is eligible for the Practice Squad. This means he would count on the overall 53+8 roster(The 8 being Practice Squad) essentially giving us an extra player in place of having an active experienced QB taking up one of those spots on the 45 man roster. Does that help?

The reason I ask is that the original post lists the 53 man squad and the 8 man practice squad, but Tom Brandstater is not listed on either and appears to be a 62nd player. Surely Brandstater needs to be contracted as one of those 61 players (if not on the 53 man squad, then he’d have to be on practice squad) to be eligible for that emergency 3rd QB.
Am I right in this assumption or can we use someone outside of the 61 contracted players?
you are correct
at least that the emergency QB has to be one of the 61 contracted players (53 active, 8 PS). It’s always been my understanding that the emergency QB could be on the PS, that’s the whole point of the emergency QB, he allows the team to avoid having to keep 3 QB’s on the 53 man roster, while preventing a team that suffers 2 QB injuries in a game from using a RB or WR at QB. IIRC, the broncos have had QB’s on the PS who were emergency QB’s in the past (I’m thinking of Hackney and Jarious Jackson)
Belief is accepting something because you’ve been convinced to do so, whether you like it or not. Faith is accepting something because you want to accept it.
by Hercules Rockefeller on Aug 24, 2009 2:57 PM MDT up reply actions
Not correct
There will be a 53 man active roster, and an 8 man practice squad. NO ONE from the PS will be able to play on Sunday. On Sunday, 45 players will be designated as active – the other 8 can not play that Sunday. The exception to this is that a QB (IF he is on the active list, not the PS) can be suited up to play in certain circumstances – mostly, injury to the other QB’s.
He felt like the man who drew the first circle. Perfect, and complete.
I have to agree with the text
The active/protected roster is 53 players. The active list is 45 or 46 (although not technically) if you carry a 3rd string/ emergency QB. We did not last year, so eight people were listed on the inactive list for each game.
I think you can see the logic here — it makes the same number of players active for each team although the rare case of an emergency in which both QBs go down is covered. That’s a slight advantage to teams with 3rd string QBs but they still need to carry one more on their 53 man roster.

That's the way I read it, too
The emergency QB has to be on the squad (i.e. one of the 53) but is available (under certain circumstances?) even if he’s not designated active for the game.
"Surprised to see you, Captain, though pleased." — from Star Trek episode Space Seed.
McBath is the third safety on the team
and olsen is the fourth interior lineman. they are definitely on the 53. i think lee robinson makes the 53 as well.

latest depth chart
Both McBath and Bruton are 2nd string but McBath had moved ahead of Bruton for the currently vacant FS position (Dawkins’ position).
This may sound like circular reasoning but they liked him enough to draft him in the 2nd round so the odds of cutting McBath are astronomically low — don’t bet on it. Even if he were a disappointment, which he is not, they’d give him more time anyways. DBs who have ball skills and can “sight” the ball are too hard to find. And our need at Safety is too great.
"If people define situations as real, they are real in their consequences". W. I. Thomas
There is not way in heck that McBath makes it through waives and onto the practice squad. He was highly regarded coming out of college and a 2nd round pick. So far, he is doing pretty well in training camp.
He is a LOCK to make the final 53 and I think Burton is too. If anyone is cut, it will be Barrett.
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
Olsen and McBath
I doubt either of them miss the 53 roster. McBath has been filling in for Dawkins in practice and games and Olsen has filled in at LG when Hamilton or Weigmann were rested from practice. Remember they have to survive waivers before they go to PS, and I doubt either will survive that.
Doubt Putzier makes it, as scottwchicago mentioned Hillis could fill in as TE/H-back. And kinda want to see Swift make it over Lloyd (another returner to keep Royal out of that role).
I'm rooting for Swift he's 6'2 and has very good hands. IMO
He may of caught the ball Gaffney was unable to. I like the kid a lot.
by bfree2bronc on Aug 23, 2009 10:07 PM MDT up reply actions
Yup
Keep Swift. Cut Lloyd. Swift is a tough kid with an upside. Lloyd is a prima donna that will not take a hit.
He felt like the man who drew the first circle. Perfect, and complete.
Carlton Powell
I can see Powell being relegated to the practice team. He hasn’t done much that I have seen, and Thomas could play NT if needs be. They keep 5 safeties. McBath can also play corner if someone goes down…again with the versatility theme.

McBath
will make it. Barrett is on the outside looking in. McBath and Bruton are with any luck our future FS and SS, respectively.
Take my advice, I'm not using it !!!
They will take 5 safetys as a couple of them bring a couple of things to the table...
McBath can play corner, Barrett can play OLB and cover TE’s so we may not keep a corner or OLB….remember, McD likes multi skilled players.

Calijoefornia.
You can't keep bringing in rookies when players are developing.
It doesn’t work that way, you’ll end up with a team that is too young and too dumb to make the plays. Barrett has been groomed to play in different situations and can be an impact on this, this season. How do you decide who stays and who doesn’t? That’s the question I’ve been asking and no one has come up with the answer yet.
McBath was a second round pick.
He’s not going anywhere. Barrett might get time at ILB but maybe not so much at safety. This is strictly MO but it seems to make sense, otherwise either McBath or Bruton wouldn’t be here. I see what you mean, Bfree, and I’m not really sure how to decide who stays and who goes and I’m glad I don’t have to. I think, and again, strictly MO, that McBath is going to be the next great safety we have. I was very excited by his pick.
Take my advice, I'm not using it !!!
I agree with some of the other posters
McBath is a lock for the roster. I think we might end up with 5 safeties, 5 corners, or maybe 5 of both. They seem to like the idea of using Barrett as a LB on big nickel packages, and he made some ST plays that I saw on Saturday.
Other stuff:
- Agree that Seth Olsen makes the team. He’s currently the 3rd guard on the squad. I think McChesney was getting embarrassed late in the game Saturday (I didn’t stay up to watch the whole second half, so I’m going on fuzzy memories of some reports I read, so apologies if this isn’t true).
- I don’t see 4 TE. The versatility of Peyton Hillis makes a 4th redundant, anyway. Richard Quinn makes it over Putzier due to the fact that he’d not clear wavers. I like guys like Putzier who come in and contribute during camp. I hope he gets a shot somewhere, if he is cut.
- Haggan is definitely playing OLB. I think they like his versatility to play inside and out. I remember reading one of the camp blogs that said he was working at Davis’s spot when Davis couldn’t go one day. Reid stepped in for Haggan. It makes me wonder if we end up with 5 OLB and 4 ILB, with Haggan being the emergency TED.
- I wanted to believe in Tim Crowder early in camp when he was getting all the 1st team reps, but I have heard nothing from him lately. Shame, but I’m having trouble believing he makes the team. Of course, someone has to stay if we do keep 5 OLB. Is Moss any better?
- I can’t see keeping 8 DL, other than just to have warm bodies to throw on the field. I’m staring to have some confidence in 3 of our DE (Peterson, McBean, and Smith), and I think Thomas might be ok in rotation. 3NT might not happen, either. Powell hasn’t shown much yet. I was really pulling for some of these guys to show up this year, which makes me sad.
I’m wondering if we keep Nate Swift on the roster, especially if something goes terribly wrong with Marshall. I like what I’ve seen from him so far, and think he’s a good developmental talent that might not make it to the PS if some team *cough*Baltimore*cough* is hurting for WR. I like his hands and size.

I’m surprised you have McChesney on there — he looked awful, Olsen should definitely be kept before him. McBath will be kept as well and I don’t believe Lloyd will make the team. I don’t think Robinson/Swift will make it past waivers, but I don’t know that they make the 53 man either

Thank you for the post
I will admit that I don’t know enough to make an accurate judgement on who should stay and who should go. I think all of the responses here have helped me look at players with greater detail to acess them and I appreciate the learning that I recieve from them.
My take:
Offense:
Quarterback: Kyle Orton, Chris Simms. 2 Gotta add Brandstater, especially because Simms is injured.
Running Backs: Knowshon Moreno, Peyton Hillis, Correll Buckhalter, LaMont Jordan, Darius Walker. 5 Walker to the PS (I know it’s thin at RB, especially with Moreno hurt) Leaves 4 RB’s. (Caveat – not sure if Walker is PS eligible)
Tight Ends: Daniel Graham, Tony Scheffer, Jeb Putzier, Richard Quinn. 4
Wide Receivers: Eddie Royal, Brandon Marshall , Brandon Stokely, Kenny McKinley, Brandon Lloyd, Jabar Gaffney. 6 Marshall is history in Denver, and Lloyd would faint if my mother tired to tackle him. Add Swift. Makes 5.
Center: Casey Wiegmann, Kory Lichtensteiger. 2
Guards: Ben Hamilton, Matt McChesney, Chris Kuper. 3 Seth Olsen is a lot better than McChesney.
Tackles: Ryan Clady, Ryan Harris, Tyler Polombus. 3
25 total on offense. 24
Deffense:
Safety: Brian Dawkins, Reynaldo Hill, Josh Barrett, David Bruton. 4 Add McBath. Makes 5.
Corner Back: Champ Bailey, Andre’ Goodman, Alphonso Smith, Jack Williams. 4
Inside Line Backer: D J Williams, Wesley Woodyard, Spencer Larsen, Andra Davis, Mario Haggan. 5
Outside Line Backer: Elvis Dumervil, Darrell Reid, Robert Ayers, Tim Crowder. 4
Defensive Line: Kenny Peterson, Marcus Thomas, Ryan McBean, LeKevin Smith, Mathias Askew. 5
Nose Tackle: Ronald Fields, Chris Baker, Carlton Powell. Leaves 2. Powell to the PS.
25 total on defense.
Special Team:
Kicker: Matt Pratter. 1
Punter: Bret Kern. 1 Colquitt punts just as good and he can kick a FG if need be.
Long Snapper: Lonnie Paxton. 1
Reserve Quarterback: Tom Brandstater. 1
Total Roster: 52. That leaves a spot. I think Jarvis Moss makes the team – he’s shown some good ability lately. There will be lots of movement on and off the roster at the OLB position throughout the season.
Practice Squad: 8
1) Britton Colquit P/K I have him on the team
2) Darcel McBath CB. Ditto
3) Marcus Thigpen RB
4) Nate Swift WR. On the team.
5) Blake Schlueter C
6) Lee Robinson ILB
7) Everette Pedescleaux DL
8) Seth Olsen G. On the team.
So, 4 more spots for the PS.
He felt like the man who drew the first circle. Perfect, and complete.
Tony Carter is going to make the practice squad. He is a pretty good prospect.
After watching Brandstater (he looked like a deer in headlights), I think we can cut him and re-sign him to the practice squad. If he gets signed by someone else, no big deal.
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
I think Brandstater looks that way because he doesn’t get that many reps and had to deal with a very porous 5th string Oline =)

Tony Carter
I’ve seen him make some good plays, and hope he at least makes the PS.
...because sometimes your inner cowboy needs to yodel.
Disagree McGeorge...
Watched him close-up and personal while he was playing at Fresno State…Kid’s got all the physical tools, prototype size, strong arm, and he’s very inteligent…He is worth the grooming effort and I thik that McDaniels would like a couple of years with him to see if he can put it all together…
Of course, just my opinion…

McG you crack me up!!!
Tony Carter hasn’t got a player in hell that he makes the team. He’ll be wait for a call while he’s selling cell phones in the mall.
I like Carter but
I’m not sure if he’s better than Bell nor if there’s enough justification to carry him as the fifth CB, as opposed to carrying an added player elsewhere on the team.
I’m fairly certain they’ll carry 9 DBs but it’s not necessary to carry 5 CBs if they’re able to man the Nickel, Dime, etc., with a Safety. I agree with others, such as HT, etc., that a 5 CB/ 4 S lineup is ideal, but that 5th CB should be special enough to warrant keeping besides just adding one more CB.
A theme I’ve written on before is the S/CB, who adds size to the 4+ DB packages and provides coverage for ‘bigger’ receivers. I had hoped that Domonique “D. J.” Johnson would show enough to allow us to keep him. There are some others who could fill this niche, such as Barrett and even Woodyard (a LB/S) so it’s not necessary to ‘lock onto’ a single candidate if another player can perform the function. The crux of my point is that Carter doesn’t necessarily add attributes that aren’t already present with Jack Williams and Alphonso Smith.
