DP - Denver on lookout to give Royal some special-teams relief on kick returns - Jeff Legwold
Eddie Royal will likely handle punt returns in the regular season, while the Broncos are hoping either Alphonso Smith or Kenny McKinley steps up as a kickoff returner. Brandon Marshall is expected at practice tomorrow, but who knows what role he'll be assuming. In addition to Simms, Smith, Royal, Tony Carter and Marcus Thomas all suffered injuries Saturday night.
SI - Jerry Jones's new stadium, Brett Favre have inauspicious debuts - Peter King
PK shares an exchange he had with Brandon Marshall last week. King explained to BMarsh that the Broncos aren't going to cave. Interestingly, Brandon makes it pretty clear his unhappiness has nothing to do with the departure of Shanny and JC.

Good Morning, NYC, and Thanks
How many more times are we going to have to read about the Broncos potentially losing their two best offensive players when, as far as I can tell, #78 is happy and health?

+1
I get so aggravated when people talk about Cutler and Marshall as our two best players. This might be blasphemy, but I’m not 100% sure that Marshall is even our best receiver anymore. I think that, given the choice of just one, I’d take Eddie. I saw it posted elsewhere that we should have had Marshall in on that Gaffney drop in the end zone. Don’t know which team that guy was following last year — Marshall would’ve dropped it, too.
BTW, #22 looks healthy, too. Add him to Clady. :) (I’m in an unfortunate position of being both a Broncos and a Hogs homer all in one bundle)

"I think that, given the choice of just one, I’d take Eddie. "
I’d take Eddie over Brandon in a heartbeat. No brainer.
He felt like the man who drew the first circle. Perfect, and complete.

Question about reporters
After reading Freeman, I cannot help but wonder how journalists gather materials for their stories and determine what spin they will put on them. Do folks like John Clayton provide cover for sports journalists who do not want to think much for themselves but who have a deadline and must write something? As long as others have written it, then you can defend it if criticized by pointing to other stories? I have no training as a journalist, so I am curious whether others have insight on how different journalists can just keep repeating the same drumbeat and get paid for it. It is not just a sports phenomenon, but it does appear to be worse among sports journalists.

Well
True journalism, the type where the guy is out in the world gathering stories, is dead in the fast paced commercial industry.
If you want to find it you have to seek out the little know guys who are out there doing it and trying to publish through obscure sights. It is out there but you have to dig for it now.
I guess the biggest insult is just that the MSM purports to be the torch bearers of the old school and won’t admit that they long ago tossed it aside.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

I posted this the other day
Chris Brown at Smart Football had a great article on this topic.

Great Article
My favorite quote:
I bring all this out to show the parallels between sort of post-modern (for lack of a better term) sports writing on the internet, twitter, blogs, and the like, and the greatest sports writing ever, which has very little to do with the alternatively obsequious or bellicose 800 word columns and maddening boilerplate recaps we have become accustomed to.

Like I’ve been saying for awhile, if reporters don’t get punished for failing to understand the math of how the progressive income tax works, or for “forgetting” to adjust historical deficit comparisons for inflation, why would we be expect them to understand anything technical about football.

Thanks Nyc
you are absolutely right phondonkey
It is not just a sports phenomenon, but it does appear to be worse among sports journalists.. Just turn on the news, or Oprah, or The View. Unfortunately, the only news the MSM seems to think is worthy for them to report is Bad news, and they sensationalize it to the hilt.

Cole's Article on Freeman
had one line äbout the Bucs that I thought could have applied to the Broncos:
“No matter how much Gruden tried to stare down the truth, the Bucs were stuck being a mediocre team with no real long-term plan to break out of that.
It’s for that reason that I don’t mind the change in coaches – especially as it applied to the front office. I fully expect the Broncos to not have a great year, but believe this leadership can draft and plan for the future with a plan. Bowlen will give McD 3-5 years to significant movement in the right direction so we better get used to the fact that McD and his approach/style/plan will be around for awhile. Some people can’t wait until the regular season to make judgments. I’ll give him 3 years.

The Reality is
we have no choice. Bowlen doesn’t go through coaches like Al Davis so it’s more a matter of accepting reality than being virtuous (another topic altogether).

Lombardi from NFP today...
Jay Cutler made the Bears move and made the Broncos drop. But for me, I think the Broncos are going to be much better this year than many expect.
The topic of the column was the change in vegas odds over the offseason.
Here it is. He’s usually a solid, thoughtful read.

Chiefs trade
Anyone notice the Chiefs made a trade for two OL today? I bring this up because I was wondering about the Chiefs’ line this year, seemed kinda weak and lacking depth, so this reflects on that. Adam Schefter tweeted about it: “Dolphins today traded OL Andy Alleman and Ikechuku Ndukwe to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for an undisclosed 2010 draft choice.”

So far, SD is also suffering problems with the O line
It’s early, but it speaks well to the Broncos chances if either KC or SD can’t stabilize the O line.
