The 11th Hour

The time has come.  Tomorrow (the 25th), the Hall of Fame Seniors Committee meets to determine the final 2 Seniors candidates that will be part of the final 17 candidates that the Hall of Fame writers vote on.  We desperately want and need Floyd "The Franchise" Little to get a chance at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  He means so much to the Broncos franchise today (which wouldn't be here without him) and we want Floyd to get into the Hall of Fame.

If you are new to the efforts of the MHR Denver Broncos Hall of Fame Committee, please go here for an introduction, go here for more about our efforts regarding Floyd, and go here, here, and here to see our previous cries for help.

So we have one more day to hit these writers via email and Twitter, and we want them to know how important Floyd Little is to us as Broncos fans!  So use the emails found below, read the links we provided, and get inspiration from our templates, and send out an email to all of the writers!

Here's a sample letter if you need some inspiration, good luck, and thanks for helping out with the cause!

Dear Mr. [Sportswriter],

I am writing you today to ask you to please put Floyd Little into the final 2 candidates chosen by the Hall of Fame Seniors committee.  Without Floyd Little, there would be no Denver Broncos franchise, his impact was that profound, and that's why he's nicknamed "The Franchise".  He carried horrible Denver teams and brought fans into the seats and finished his career ranked 6th all-time in rushing yards.  The Pro Football Hall of Fame consists of great players and players who had a great impact on the league and where it is today.  Floyd is both of those and I feel that he represents everything that is good and right with the Denver Broncos and the NFL and he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

Thanks!

A must. The Broncos will never be fairly represented unless we all participate in this as a fan nation.

The sample letter

Didn’t he actually finish 7th insted of 6th, ao of his retirement? But it might help to mention that the other six are all in the HOF. Wish I knew who they were.

He felt like the man who drew the first circle. Perfect, and complete.

The committee

discussed this. For reasons too numerous to go into here, we decided not to make this one of the foundations of our case for Floyd. We all agree this is a solid arguement. Thanks for bringing this up bradley.

Okay

I bow to the collective wisdom. I did do a little checking (no pun intended – really!) and only found three HOFers that retired before Floyd who had more rush yards – Jim Brown (12,312 ! ); Jim Taylor (8, 597); and Joe Perry (1948-61, Baltimore Colts – 9,723).
That’s all I know about Perry, but no argument with Jim Taylor and Jim Brown in the HOF. But would someone tell me what Paul Hornung is doing there? 3,711 rush yards and 130 receptions. WTF?

Leroy Kelly is another

Played for the Browns from 64-73, gained 7,274 yards rushing. Little gained 6,323 yards rushing.

You Are Right

Shouldn’t have put that in sample letter, my bad. I did it quickly last night and should have done a better job.

If anyone is looking for better examples of letters, definiltey check the previous links.

As I think about it

Maybe I was srong when I asserted (above) that all six of the rb’s that had more yards thatn Little (at the time of his retirement) are in the HOF.

The Fourth Quarter

One of my complaints about the Broncos over the last three to four years is that we seemed to have lost our fire at the end of games. There was a time, decades long, that Denver owned the fourth quarter, particularly in Denver. I don’t know if it is entirely Mile High vs. Invesco or the “modern” players or just plain conditioning, but we lost several games the last few years in the fourth quarter.

Gentlemen (and ladies), we are in the Fourth Quarter of our efforts to get Floyd Little into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. How many of you have sent emails to the committee? Even one email or twitter? How many of you have Peyton Hillis’ mentality? How many of you are willing to dig deep and get at least a couple of emails or twitters out? Are we going to be Cleveland Browns or Elway-led Broncos? Ladies (and Gentlemen), we are late in the Fourth Quarter and the score is very close. We know Little has support on the Sr. Committee, is it enough? We are in our huddle at our own two. Are we going to execute “The Drive” to get Little in the Hall? It’s up to you. This is not a MHR endeavour. It’s up to you. Who, in this huddle, is going to step forward and say “We’ve got’em where we want ’em now”?

Is it Okay to send more than one e mail?

I sent one to all the members listed above a few days ago (the one to Dave Goldberg came back as undeliverable) but I’ll do another if you think it’s OK

You damn Tuten! (pun intended) Strength and Conditioning, get it?

I have sent more than one to all of them. Goldberg does come back and so does .com. I think the best way to get to golberg is twitter. Thanks bradley. You’re in the huddle.

Ron Borges & Len Shapiro

Are two guys who had responded to me earlier and really helped us understand the whole process. I’ve responded back to them again as well, thanking them for their help, sympathizing with how hard it is to be a voter, and asking them to consider Floyd for how much he meant to the Denver franchise.

My letter to Ira Miller (in hope that it gives a few people a new idea about what to say)

Dear Mr. Miller: I write to urge you to vote Floyd Little into the Hall of Fame.

Floyd Little led the league in both rushing and combined yards from 1968 to 1973. He was the smallest back to lead the league in rushing since the 1930’s. As a Bronco fan since 1965, I can also tell you that he has a lot of other records and accomplishments, including being one heck of a fine human being. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame because of his accomplishments on the gridiron.

But the real reason you should vote for him tomorrow is this: in the late 1960’s, the Denver Broncos were in trouble. The owners, Gerald and Alan Phipps, were at the brink of selling the team, which would have meant that the Broncos would no longer be in Denver. Floyd Little arrived and energized the fan base beyond the (relatively) small group of Mile High regulars. Floyd Little brought such talent, energy, and humility to Denver that the Phipps brothers succeeded in getting approval for an expansion to Mile High that allowed the Broncos to be financially competitive in the emerging new NFL, and to remain in Denver.

Floyd Little was a heck of a running back, a heck of a human being (still is), and without him there would be no Denver Broncos. Just think about that. One of the original American Football League teams disappearing in a puff of unglory. That didn’t happen, though, largely because of Mr. Little.

I am positive that if you vote Floyd Little into the Hall of Fame you will feel good about doing so for the rest of your life.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

He felt like the man who drew the first circle. Perfect, and complete.

I’ve sent the same message to all the others too. Got my rabbit’s foot out!

I miss Ira...

…from his days on the Green Sheet at the SF Chronicle. He used to do a weekly Picks thing, and it was hard to keep up with him. Good guy.

Shannon Sharpe should get in the Hall by merit alone, not by stroking some sport writers ego!

I get sick and tired of these wanta be sports people who dictate who goes in the Hall. Just like the a$$ hole who said as long as he is “alive” he will never vote for Kenny Stabler. Now that’s being a bigot fronm the get go. I don’t have anything to say to those punks. Really, I would give any one of those people the sweat off of my brow!!!

You miss the point entirely

And as an advocate for Broncos of the 60’s and 70’s i have obviously failed miserably. The response to our call for action is pathetic. I’m out.
