...in the face of adversity. (The Broncos unwritten)
As it stands, we stand, slate clean. After an off-season so dirty you might have bleached your skin, all that anger, all the confusion, all the gloom has to be snow capped. Even with the looming feeling of the Marshall situation, fixed or broken it will wash come September. Whether this team wins or loses, regardless of who's here and who's gone, this is our team and the 2009 Denver Broncos will stand tall or fall together.
What follows the jump will be my thoughts on the team as they stand and what I feel could make a difference...
Quarterbacks - We have a system that is QB friendly but what does it matter if we don't have a great QB? While it goes without saying we could do better at QB than Kyle Orton or Chris Simms I think each offers enough talent to run our offense successfully. Orton will get every opportunity to keep the job but I'd love to see Simms get a chance on first team until then it is unclear as to who is better. Despite a rough showing Tom Brandstater intrigues me, I want to see him get a dozen or two attempts over the next two weeks, but even if the raw talent is there he is still going to need at least a season maybe two by the looks of him.
Running Backs - Knowshon Moreno could be huge for us. We expect it, we should since he was our top pick and the first RB drafted in 2009 but even if he struggles with injuries we should feel lucky to have the talented Peyton Hillis as well as Buckhalter ready to move the rock.
Wide Receivers - Amazing talent at WR is what will make our perhaps average at best QB situation look good. Brandon Marshall is still perhaps our best receiver but Eddie Royal could/may have already eclipsed him. Marshall has a great mix of god given abilities and incredible skill but Royal is all heart and hard work. Jabar Gaffney is an impressive addition and with Brandon Stokely completing the four receiver set we are unparalleled. Tony Scheffler would be my pick to send out in five receiver formations.
Tight Ends - Daniel Graham and Tony Scheffler are staples but Richard Quinn could be interesting at goal line.
The Offensive Line - Our boys upfront should do great, barring injury that is.
Defensive Backs - Champ Bailey may be getting old but he can still get it done, I'm certain the same holds true for new addition Brian Dawkins. Andre Goodman looks solid but I want more Alphonso Smith, this kid looks special. With Renaldo Hill and our younger depth we should be very good.
Linebackers - Talk about your clusters of talent D.J. Williams, Elvis Dumervil, Andra Davis, Robert Ayers, Spencer Larsen, Wesley Woodyard, etc. It's hard for me to think of the guys that will be on the pine let alone the cuts.
The Defensive Line - The nameless, the faceless, but my oh my the improved, at least so it seems. The linebackers talent and the system run should make these misfits... well fit in.
I won't really go into special teams, the defensive depth should improve coverage there though. All in all as much as I hated McDaniels decisions early on I like his attitude and methods so far. Time will tell. Stand or fall, these Broncos' story is ready to be written, together.

I would hope so.
But seeing guys like Larsen and Woodyard on the bench is painful to me. I feel there is a strong need for good rotation. As for cuts seeing Jarvis Moss go would/will be tough considering his 1st round expectations.

Good Comments
McDaniels has a plan for Brandstater…Kinda like that project you might have out in the shop, maybe can’t work on it every weekend, but in a year or 2 you get it done, put the last coat of paint on it, and bring it out for all to see.

I can't quite explain it but...
I got the feeling that Brandstater has something special about him, he obviously needs some polishing and time, but he just had a different presence under center than the vets.

Didn't Scheffler have one fumble last year? Maybe this was his one this year.
Brandstater has a lot of work to do.

I like the thoughts.
As far as Alphonso goes though (and I was LOVING him at the combine, words can describe my reaction when we actually drafted him) I think starting him at nickel will be in his best interest. An NFL Defensive Back’s success goes hand in hand with his confidence, and even if he is ready to stand opposite Champ, I wouldn’t want him to.
I want him to get confident in his coverage and grab a few interceptions before we start lining him up opposite I Am Legend. If we start him there now, he’ll get picked on; HARD. So let’s be patient.
Good article though, look forward to hearing more.
It's Orange Crush time. And no I am NOT talking about the soft-drink.
Which I beg the question: "Can liquid really be... soft?"
The past is settled, its only the future now. A new one, for Denver, and for BMarsh. Light'em up Beast!
