Re-Kindling the Mile High Magic

As a boy growing up in Idaho I became a Denver Broncos fan.  Since that time we have had a great owner, coaches, quarterbacks, and teams.  We now have an amazing stadium, and have won two Superbowls.  And as a longtime fan, winning those two Superbowls was so much fun.  And Yet...and yet, I would trade those Superbowls back for something that was even so much more fun.

You see even as a kid I could feel the Mile High Magic and it really was magic.  In those years when the team would go on the road they could hardly win, but when they played at Mile High they could hardly lose.  Yes Virginia, there really was magic in Mile High.  And I don't think I've seen anything in sports quite like the Mile High Magic before or since.  When the team was down and the players were discouraged, the fans would rise up and put the team on their back and carry them to a win.  Just nothing else like it.

I think most of the Magic was that the fans weren't worried about how strong an arm the QB had, they weren't worried if the team would make it to the Superbowl, they didn't care about how many all pros were on the team, they were in the moment cheering for their underdog team and willing them to win just that game on that day.  They loved the team and the team loved the Denver fans back by doing everything they could to win that game on that day. And more often than not it worked.

And so I know now more than I knew as a kid why I became a Broncos fan.  It wasn't because of the owner, the coaches, or even the players.  I became a fan of the Broncos because of the Broncos fans and the Mile High Magic they made.

And I want it back.  I want it all back.  Not just for myself, but for boys growing up on farms in Idaho and in cities like Denver.  And it's beginning here at the Mile High Report.  Here we care not for a journalist world turned upside down where political journalists do nothing but gossip and where sports journalist think they are reporting watergate daily!  Football is fun and journalists ought to report it that way, but since they don't the fans here do!

Here at MHR the Migh High Magic is being rekindled.  Let the word spread from MHR that Mile High Magic Fans don't boo their own team.  Booing is for cynics, cowards, journalists, and losers.  Let the word spread from MHR that we don't boo former players or coaches.  We cheer in apprecation because we're honored that they once played for us.

But when our team comes on the field...then the Magic begins!  When our team comes on the field everyone else may think our team is the underdog but we know that we the fans can will them to be better than the other team.  We know that because they've practiced hard and prepared their best we can will them to be even better than they thought they were!

Here at MHR it's back the Mile High Magic is back!!!

Spread the word!!!

13-3 baby and Superbowl bound or bust!!!

Our record at home hasn't been stellar has it?

In the last several years since the move to the new Mile High we have lost the leagues biggest home field advantage. Of course that’s also because we haven’t been very good. Give us just a little hope and the fans will rock Mile High like the old days!

Great Post Bronco Brother!

That’s something (especially the last few seasons) I have noticed a lack of…. Even when I was at the Bills game at home last year, I felt almost like an outcast screaming at the Bills’ offense when they were on the field – and I was in the south stands!?!

I think if we start the season with a couple wins – by the home game vs. Dallas, we will be able to relate the ‘New Mile High Magic’ with that of the Old. I’m hopin’ our fans don’t end up being fickle and actually give Our, almost entirely new team, an honest and fair chance to prove that the Denver Broncos are not to be underestimated!

First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and we oughtta let someone else have a fair shot : )

The boo-birds will be out in force we know that.

I hope I don’t see anybody holding a “Fire McDaniels” sign. WE as fans should get behind our team and support them, that what makes the Broncos great.

On the road last season, in front of hostile crowds, Cutler had an 89.1 passer rating. He had an 83.2 rating at home, in front of a pro-Bronco partisan crowd.

I agree with your sentiments

I too have many fond memories from the old Mile High. It’s going to take a lot to get that back because the crowd demographic has changed since the 60’s and 70’s. The current population in Denver (and it’s probably true in other cities as well) now views tickets as a commodity to be bartered on the open market – we never used to see the number of opposing team fans in the stadium that we see today. Until the team really starts to win and overcomes that cynicism mountain, the ghosts of the old Mile High will remain in the parking lot.

You spoke to my heart man.

The void that Elway left wasn’t so much his QB play, it was the magic that left with him. It returned briefly in 2005, but is all but gone. Look at our home record since Cutler took over. :(

OK You got me

I don’t comment much on here, one of those (shudder) lurkers. While I really get a lot from this sight towards insight, updates and general info, (why I at least lurk) I find a lot that is just as you describe. A lot of good information and analysis, and this sight comes closest to anything out there to the MileHi heart and magic you so eloquently describe. I guess I too was spoiled since I became a fan as a kid of the ’60’s. There just seems to be a little something more that I am looking for. I believe you have defined it pretty accurately. Thank you for the flashback to those treasured memories and a little push to understanding what I have been missing in the games for several years, and even in the hours I spend pouring over Bronco’s news and blogs. I too keep longing for that fan magic that lifts the team to what seems impossible to everybody else.

I consider myself a 'newer' fan.....

I at times don’t feel I have any ‘right’ whatsoever being the newbie fan of 12 years. My football loyalties run deep lol But, I CAN say now…I do KNOW and FEEL the “MILE HIGH MAGIC” you speak of! Especially since being here at MHR!

Thanks for reminding me!!

I too have felt the loss, and never could have stated it as succinctly. I WANT IT BACK… I WANT IT ALL BACK!! I think you just provided me with my own personal battle cry!
