Horse Tracks 8/26/09 - Dreaming of an Orange August in Canton

DB - Floyd a Hall Finalist - Gray Caldwell
Floyd Little took a giant step toward the Pro Football Hall of Fame yesterday, as he and Dick LeBeau were announced as senior nominees. Can you imagine The Franchise and Big Play Shay going in together next summer?!?!?! A Denver weekend in Canton?

A must read for all Broncos fans...
DB - Floyd Little - Jim Saccomano
Sacco shares some of what Floyd Little meant to the Broncos.
DB - Tuesday: McDaniels - Broncos TV
McDaniels praises Russ Hochstein's versatility (sound familiar?), as he can play every line position, plus TE and FB. Plus the team is looking forward to playing at home after two weeks on the road. McDaniels actually says the Seahawks forced the Broncos to pass more than planned. Lots of dancing around Brandon Marshall questions...
DB - Tuesday: Sounds from the Locker Room - Broncos TV
Quotes from several players after a rain-shortened practice...I am crushed to see that Mario Haggan walks around with a Yankees cap. What is he THINKing??
DB - On the Right Track - Zach Eisendrath
On progress, Hochstein and turnovers.
DP - Broncos' Little a lot closer to the hall - Mike Klis
DP - Hochstein latest Patriot to join roster - Mike Klis
Klis says Hochstein's arrival (for the same 7th-rounder New England had sent over in the Le Kevin Smith trade) may put Kory Lichtensteiger and Mitch Erickson on the bubble.
DP - Haggan would love to put a hit on Cutler - Mike Klis
Haggan says the fans would love to see a sack of JC. Chris Simms is thankfully off crutches already, although he is not expected to play again in the preseason. The Broncos may sign QB Ingle Martin as presumed preseason fodder.

I refuse to pay ESPN money — can someone post the relevant bits from the Schefter blog entry regarding Royal and that Bears fan? Sounds fishy to me.
Also, Peter King is a d-nozzle. He must’ve realized that he was about to write something positive about Denver, and just chickened out. Maybe he had already hit his limit of positive news.
MillsLane25 in Colorado Springs, Colo.: I feel like Josh McDaniels, given his, um, entertaining start to his tenure in Denver, is setting himself up to not be allowed to struggle. Say the Broncos are 4-12 this year (could happen, sadly) and improve to 8-8 next year. You bring in a new coach, a roster overhaul takes place, it happens again. Is there any reason to hire a guy anymore if you won’t commit to, really, about 4 years? (Especially when they could be drafting a quarterback next April.)
MillsLane25: The one thing we’ve seen in this league is that, outside of Bill Belichick, Mike Tomlin and Tom Coughlin, there’s no coach who is automatically safe from one year to the next. Saying that, I think McDaniels will survive this year, next year and well beyond. He’s getting a lot of heat now, but someone who knows coaches well predicted to me that McDaniels is going to be one of the greatest NFL coaches ever. Strong words, I know, and we’ll see. But I think he’s going to be a real good one.

and coughlin
hasn’t been safe that long, if i remember correctly they were talking about replacing him before they won the SB.
That may have just been the press. After all, when the media was talking about Coughlin’s job being in jeopardy, that is precisely when the Giants gave him a contract extension…

No way it happens in Denver
Reading the Post, hearing dispatches from Denver radio, occassionally reading “Broncos fan” comments at NFL.com, DPO, PFT, NFP, etc…MacDaniels, short of winning the next two Superbowls, will be tarred, feathered, and run out of this town before he gets a chance.
Its become almost like a Saturday Night Live skit making fund of SNL. It’s real life satire…like satire about satire. Its that bad.

"No, I'm from Iowa, I only work in outer space."
Nick in Gary, Ind.: Aren’t people overstating the Bears’ lack of WRs? Great QBs make great receivers — besides, [Jay] Cutler’s favorite target a lot of last year was Eddie Royal. He seems like he makes enough plays where he doesn’t need Calvin Johnson or T.O. to be successful.
Nick: First and foremost, you’re vastly underrating Royal. He is going to be one of the game’s top receivers — watch. Beyond that, Cutler will need some help from the position. I think Devin Hester and Earl Bennett can provide some, and let’s not forget the two tight ends, Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark. They’re not true wide receivers, but Olsen is capable of being the Bears’ leading receiver this season. They’re not deep at wide receiver, but if Matt Forte is running well, Cutler is not making mistakes and the defense is back, Chicago can win. With the receivers it has.

Thanks, NYC!
Uh, why does Royal not get any respect? Does this guy think Devin Hester is in the same league?

Chadiha
He was by far the best writer out there when he was with SI.COM. Now that he’s at the big brother espn, his material is boilerplate and uninteresting. Really too bad. I hope Schefter doesn’t get poisened by the ESPN curse….outside of their actual football broadcasts that consortium is aweful.
Per Legwold at the DP “Though team officials around the NFL are restricted in how much they can say about wanting to add a player who is under contract with another team, several general managers and personnel executives contacted this week privately said an unhappy player has to be jettisoned only when the team feels he is impacting the coaching staff’s ability to reach other players. That, or, when teammates, either from being weary of answering questions about the unhappy player or dealing with him in the locker room, decide he isn’t doing enough on the field to be an asset.”
I know Warmick and some others here think BM will/should get cut, but the statement above details how NFL business is done in the real world. And it will be done in private, much to the chagrin of the media drama queens.
Expect the Broncos to deal with this matter by making business decisions the benefit the organization’s best interests. I’ll tell you what the Bronco’s won’t do, they won’t quickly resolve the BM issue so as to satisfy the emotional pleas of a some of their beleaguered fans.
I recommended this DP story.
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.

I’m with you, McG. No matter how much of a deal everyone wants to make of the BMarsh situation, it doesn’t HAVE to be resolved today or tomorrow. He’s got to actually try, at some point. If not, he’ll end up suspended for conduct detrimental – and I’d think he’s not willing to go that far. If he doesn’t play his heart out, then he’ll just squander on the bench…
by Douglas A. Lee on Aug 26, 2009 8:11 AM MDT up reply actions
He won't be suspended...
I think a team is only allowed to suspend a player for 4 games without jumping through the NFLPA legal hoops. Plus, “conduct detrimental” has a pretty high standard to meet…. It’s more than just not trying hard. I think Marshall will do enough not to be “insubordinate”. The most you can do is keep him on the roster and deactivated for all the games.
I think Chad 88 is the scenario to look at. He sulked and had a mediocre year. If Marshall plays, we will likely see the same result.
So, yes, you can punish him by keeping him on the team… but at the cost of a spot on the 53-player roster. That may or may not be an exorbitant cost.. depends on what the trade options are.

Eddie Royal
ROFLMFAO…acopter……
That was a hilarious read. Thanks NYC. Cutler’s great because one of his fave targets was merely Eddie ROYAL!!! HAH. Eddie “HOF Bound” (maybe not but I can dream) Royal. Thats right, Cutler’s recieving corps in Chi-Town is clearly AS GOOD OR BETTER than the Broncos recieving corps right? ROFL ROFL OMG I’m about to cry I’m laughing so hard. Ok back to work.

- Congrats to Floyd Little. He is more than deserving for the HOF!
- I’m looking forward to seeing what Hochstein will bring to the team.
- As suspected, any “distraction” from BMarsh is in the eyes of the media, not in the locker room.
- Glad to hear that Haggan’s lookin to put a whuppin on Cutler.
- Interesting that the Bucs were QB poor prior to the draft (weren’t they involved in the Cutler trade talks?) and now are looking to trade because they have too many QB/s. Why are we looking at Ingle Martin when the Bucs have so many QB’s?
re: Martin. We’re not going to be carrying 4 QBs. If Simms’ injury isn’t serious, then we’re only looking for a QB to take some scout-team reps until he’s back. So there’s no reason to trade for another QB. Thanks for the kind words, EZ.
by Douglas A. Lee on Aug 26, 2009 8:09 AM MDT up reply actions
If they are looking at Martin
Its because he is a cheap bit of camp fodder for the last week to save some wear on the others. There would be no sense trading anything for someone you are going to cut in a week.

Great article my Macki on Floyd Little
Here are just three of Mackie’s 44 reasons why Little should be in the HOF
11 – Little ranks 16th in Rushing among all 41 HOF running backs
12 – Little ranks 17th in Yards from Scrimmage among all 41 HOF RBs
13 – Little ranks 11th in receiving yards among all 41 HOF RBs
Incredible that he wasn’t voted in years ago.
...because sometimes your inner cowboy needs to yodel.
Peter King On Little
I believe it was Peter King I was listening to on Morning Drive on the NFL Network on Sirius, who spent about 10 minutes on why Dick LeBeau should be an automatic for the HOF, then, fortunately as a minute aside, he mentioned that Little had been nominated as well, and that while his statistics weren’t that great, maybe he should be give some consideration due to what he meant to the Bronco franchise.
Clearly, the man needs some education on Little’s stats, but also clearly who he thinks is the stronger of the two Veteran’s Committee candidates.
Let the campaign of information begin now. A call or two to set King straight might also be helpful.

I’ve been a Little fan as long as I can remember, met him when he was in his heyday with the Broncos. I think I was 8 or 9 at the time.
I think Banks needs to go watch some film. Seems to me Orton threw the long plenty when he was in Chicago, but the short game was more effective as it usually is regardless of team or QB. Wasn’t there an post on this back when the trade occurred?
Floyd Little
Here’s a big shout out to Floyd Little, the first true “hero” the Broncos ever had. I know there’s a lot of young folks on this site, but I hope you’ll somehow come to appreciate what Floyd Little meant to this franchise – #44 brought a legitimacy both in name and accomplishment that helped this franchise and the city believe that great things could happen at Mile High. He was a class act both on and off the field and any recognition he receives probably won’t be enough. Go Broncs!
It's "just" football
Here's hoping that Haggan gets his wish
that he and his mates get put JC on his back multiple times. Or better yet, on his face so he can taste the turf of Mile High!

I admit, I will enjoy that when/if it happens
But it’s not just sacks, JC better pray he doesn’t throw an INT. He is going to get absolutely destroyed with a “block” if he finds himself on “defense” immediately after throwing a pick.
People can use statistics to prove anything, 87% of all people know that.
I doubt there'll be any head-hunting.
And I’ll be embarrassed as a fan if there is.
by PredominantlyOrange on Aug 26, 2009 2:38 PM MDT up reply actions
Nothing dirty
I’m not saying we will be playing dirty or taking cheap shots at Cutler, as the term head-hunting implies, more just the fact that all defenders are taught to hit the QB after he throws a pick. In that instance, the QB is a defender and needs to be blocked. I wasn’t hoping that they go head hunting per se, I just hope to see Cutler get crushed a time or two (in a purely legal manner).
People can use statistics to prove anything, 87% of all people know that.
Simms is out for the rest of the preseason… Bummer… No one wants to see Orton play with our O-line back-ups so I guess we’ll get more Tom B the next few weeks.
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
Yah, here's Schefter's update if anyone missed it just now
(on Twitter)
Adam_Schefter Chris Simms high ankle sprain. Looks like 2-4 weeks. Denver has some QB decisions to make regarding final two preseason games and beyond.
Tom B will eventually be decent but doesn’t seem all that ready to me (though to be fair the 3rd string OL was terrible the other night which isn’t his fault). Ingle Martin doesn’t inspire much excitement. But since Simms isn’t out for a long time I guess there’s no point in getting another long term backup.
Stay healthy, Kyle! is all I can say.
That is sad
Brandstater isn’t ready at all. Maybe a little fire will be good for him, but it will make watching the team play less interesting for sure. He looks pretty lost back there to me.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.
First professional football game action
behind porous 3rd string OL, though, so it’s not surprising he looked lost. I’m thinking we should be patient with him.
About fricken time!
Congrats to Floyd, he better damn well get in now. And Gradishar better be next. Is the old school media finally realizing their injustice over these many years? Or have enough of them died after years of being brain dead to allow more intelligent voters to come in?

Haggan should be wearing a ROCKIES hat!!!!!! I HOPE AND PRAY WE BLITZ EVERYONE ON THE BEARS FIRST POSSISION

No no no
That should be the one time I’d be in favor of seeing a “Show Blitz” play. Run every one up like we are going to, then drop back into coverage and make Jay through into double or triple coverage. He absolutely will and then we’ll be taking it the other way.

From Lindsay Jones' DB twitter:
denverbroncos 1 hour away from a Denver media conference call with Jay Cutler. What should we ask him?
Floyd Little
It’s about danged time. This should have been a no-brainer a LONG time ago.
There may be hope for Randy Gradishar yet. Another clear oversight in the HOF voting circus.
It seems
