Sounds like JC listened to his coaches about how to handle the media calls for this week’s game. Good for him.

Easterbrook
I’m not exactly impartial because I think he’s a terrible journalist who often gets his facts wrong and falls for trendy thinking. Also, the book about how Charlemagne never had a cell phone, so we should stop worrying about poverty…. that was classy. Anyway, that last TMQ is a prime example of the general disease of beltway journalists: cast a pox upon everything in sight, then clap yourself on the back for being The Last Honest Man in America.
For the last two years, he’s been beating up on Shanahan and Cutler. Shouldn’t have pulled the plug on Plummer he says. He has in fact been harsher on Shanny than anyone. Now that they’re gone, they’re sainted, and it’s time for the Smartest Guy in the Room to cut the new guys down to size. His history of anti-Semitism and and disregard for “facts” in journalism is just the cherry on the sundae.
Anyway, ’morning, and thanks as always NYC.

I doubt even Easterbrook would classify himself as a journalist...
But it was rather amusing that he could be such a devoted Shanny-hater during Mike’s tenure here, and suddenly jump on the Bronco-hater bandwagon for replacing him – even as he nods toward the epic three-game collapse of last year.

He's still a staff writer at the New Republic, regularly contributes to the Atlantic....
His specialty is taking academic studies out of context and making too big a deal out of them. Complaints from the specialists whose work he cites are always numerous. And he wrote a really lame, reactionary book.

global warming
I’m aware of Easterbrook’s previous skepticism on global warming. He “converted” in 2006.
“As an environmental commentator, I have a long record of opposing alarmism. But based on the data I’m now switching sides regarding global warming, from skeptic to convert.”
Better late than never.
I’ve always refrained from political discussion here at MHR but GW is a scientific question — IMO.

I suppose I meant specifically TMQ not being "journalistic"
…which I don’t believe is his intention with that column. I don’t follow his other writings.

Not a fan
I get frustrated how an article can take an hour to read and offer little substantive analysis. Though it’s interesting he takes the “Broncos will miss Bates” angle. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone, MSM or otherwise, suggest that letting Bates’s Pass-Pass-Pass-Kick (Variations include: Pass-Pass-Pass-INT, Pass-Pass-Pass-Pass-No-More-Downs, or Pass-Pass-Pass-Pout, though the last one might have been the QB improvising a bit) go elsewhere was a bad move. His writing reeks of being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian.
by bowma101 on Aug 27, 2009 11:26 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
contrarian for its own sake
sometimes I get that feeling as well from TMQ. I suppose that’s why I was a bit surprised he had jumped on the same hater bandwagon that most of the MSM have hitched their stars to regarding the Broncos. Especially considering his Shanny-bashing over the years.

That's a good way to put it
And then beyond the contrarianism, there’s the inevitable “lifestyle” elements of the column, like the part where he complains about continuity problems in Buffy and Battlestar Galactica. Or complains about federal agencies. Or ogles cheerleaders. If you look at pictures of them side by side, I’d actually give Peter King a better chance with the ladies. Which, yikes!

Oh, burn.
Listen to his reasoning for picking Kyle:

I love this quote from Orton that he gave in an interview with AP today.
Someone asked who (between Orton and Cutler) will throw more touchdowns, and he fired back, "I don’t really care."
Why not?
"I don’t think touchdown passes necessarily equals wins."

A prediction of this season if I may...
Now I am no Kool Aid drinker, nor am I a pessimistic fan.
Worst case Scenario: This team turns into Detroit of last year and goes 0-16
Best case Scenario: This team turns into the Pats of a couple years ago and goes 16-0.
I believe we are capable, even with our tough schedule of going 10-6 winning our division. I believe we are also capable of going 7-9 because of our schedule. But I do believe that we will have a better win loss record than last year. I look to see the Broncos go 10-6 with a plus or minus 1 game.
I think some of these top notch teams we actually have a chance at beating, while a couple others I don’t see we’ll get the job done.
I say lets let the chips fall where they may – we will be better this year than we were last!

That IS a great question, Kirk. I’ve thought about it a bit lately, and I’m not sure how I will handle things. Mondays will obviously be results/facts heavy; actual news will always take precedent; I don’t know if I’ll have to pare down how many columns I include. Honestly, it’ll be a work in progress which I’ll play by ear, to cliche you to death…I suppose I’ll do as much as I can do without driving myself nutty. I’ll admit that I’m glad training camp is over – that was a bit much…

John Clayton
I’m constantly amazed at how these jock sniffers from the MSM manage to always make mountains out of mole hills. I don’t know who’s worse Clayton, Dukes, or Glazer. Is Clayton so worried that Shefter make take over his job, which is probably not a bad idea, that he inflates stuff to create drama?

Floyd Little article
It’s great to hear from Floyd Little regarding his nomination for the Hall. My favorite line in that article is:
“It’s the 44th Super Bowl,” he said. “An African-American just became our 44th president. I wore No. 44. I just feel it’s my time.”
It is well past your time Floyd, but the single greatest injustice of the Hall of Fame is about to be rectified. #44 to the Hall!
People can use statistics to prove anything, 87% of all people know that.

I don't think it is that significant
I mean unless McNabb plays horrible Vick won’t start this season. Favre has never retired so seeing him on MNF isn’t surprising, however I probably won’t watch the game. The Cowboys scoreboard is a monstrosity and looks really insane. You sit in the upper deck seats, the scoreboard is all you will be looking at. Culter coming back to Denver is because it is Bronco fans’ chance to give him crap.
