Horse Tracks 8/28/09 - Brandon Marshall continues to soil his image

As I mentioned a couple days back in the comments, I could see this heading toward a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. There's a limit to where the NFLPA can defends its players' actions, and BMarsh (IMO) is getting awfully close to that point...

Hey BM, thanks for the means by which Denver can rightly suspend you. Punting the ball? REALLY! What a child.
I honestly don’t think he’ll be a big distraction because I don’t know how his teammates could take him seriously.
There are not many Bronco fans on his side, but I think he is pretty much alone now.
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
I agree with you there George.
Any leverage he thought he had went kaput last night. This guy’s on a train headed to nowhere fast.

I think you’ve been right on this one all along. The best way to maximize value on this one is to wait patiently while he drags out his tantrum, get what they can out of him on the field, then let somebody tender him.
Alternately, they could place calls to Dan Snyder, Woody Johnson and Jerry Jones. The mind reels at what could happen playing those three off against one another….
I liked
the Legwold piece and the Bowen piece. To bad we can’t get Brandon to read the Bowen article. It might help his overly large inflated ego see what he has done to his marketability.
I agree with you McGeorge on some of the other post you made concerning Brandon signing a new contract next year. It will be an NFL minimum with lots of incentives throughout.
That said IMO the only way we unload this piece of “BM” is if some other team is really desparate for a WR. kinda like we were last year at RB.
we were desperate at RB
but even Shanahan in a desperate attempt wouldn’t touch Maurice Clarett again. He’s got skill, but all the problems outweigh that by a mile—-sounds oddly familiar!

I understand
though I don’t think Brandon has quite reached the Maurice Clarett stage just yet. there is still hope for him, not much but still a glimmer.
I’m afraid you would puke your guts out if BM were released and you saw how much a team like Tampa, NYJ or Baltimore threw his way.
He’ll have a ton of bad boy carveouts in his next deal, but the guy is a Hall of Fame talent, 25 years old and ready to turn it back on the moment he gets what he wants. There would be a lot of owners willing to roll the dice on BM.
There are too many D-bags playing in the NFL for me to think the league would suddenly stand up to BM. I’m just shooting straight. There would be a feeding frenzy if this guy were free to sign anywhere.
Fortunately, I fully believe Denver will resolve this problem with the organization’s best interests in mind, not BMs.
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
No matter what we all think of BMarsh’s off-field actions (and they’re not good), there are quite a few players around the league who have done far worse, which sadly speaks to exactly what you’re saying, McG. If murderers can get big contracts, then obviously BMarsh can, too.

Yep. Greed is not good. But it’s awfully powerful and impossible to control.

Very well said
"Don't feed the trolls. Remember to be polite. And please show self-restraint in comment length!" -Me, to myself, because I need constant reminding.
I still like him
It is my belief, that Brandon Marshall is just a very emotional guy, who acts in accordance with the strong emotions that he feels in the moment. One day he might feel very strongly about wanting out of Denver, and the next he feels very strongly about staying and helping his team mates – and both days he acts accordingly. (And if his girl friend pushes the wrong buttons, he feels strongly about “asserting” himself – and acts accordingly).
Now put that person under the spot light of the national media – it is not easy for him, and he is bound to come of as immature.
WE need to stop obsessing about him. The day will come, when he will again feel good about being a Bronco, and this off season will be a non issue. Very emotional people don’t hold grudges – if the feel good, they are happy and productive.
I am nox excusing his behaviour – I am explaining it. BM is at heart a good guy.
I agree Jeeeeeeens (I'm calling you Jeens from now on lol)
I think Marshall is a good person. He’s the kind of guy that I usually find myself being friends with. His quick thought reactions to things are hard to swallow. I think McD knows he’s a good person too— the trouble is getting him to harness that and let go of the little things in the mean time.

With all due respect...
…your first paragraph could also be directly applied to my 2 1/2 year old. Brandon is in his mid-20’s. Its unnacceptable no matter how you spin it. The difference between BM and my daughter, though, is that she already understands that there isn’t an infinite bag of sorries to pull from whenever she loses her head. She has consequences and accepts them far more readily than this wealthy, priveledged, physically mature adult.
Good people don’t continually take advantage of those around them, and BM has a long history of it. Ask his girlfriends, the Broncos, Rod Smith and all the fans that have stood behind him.

After a couple of rewrites
I weeded out the word “Childish”. The paragraph does discribe most 2 year olds – but it also discribes some adults – mainly women of course :-)
I think these kind of men burn a lot of bridges.
Mainly women? Gee Thanks.

Found this one lion around too
After I said “bite me” to Marshall last night

The commenter formerly known as "Dashiell".
I never said
I didn’t like him. What I don’t like is the way he is acting. If he truely is an emotional guy then I think he would be more inclined to be a part of the team. Everything I have seen from him indicates that he doesn’t want to be part of the team. Emotional of not that is where he has to start. His first day at camp “I’m here aren’t I” or “I don’t know the playbook” these are things that tells me it’s not really being emotional it’s being inmature
You have got to be kidding, Jens
“BM is at heart a good guy”? If someone drags you into an alley, pop you with a crow bar and takes off with your money, his mom and his kids may still think of him as “at heart a good guy,” but I would bet you aren’t going give a hoot about how nice he may actually be beneath the rough first impression you have of him.
Man, I love Champ Bailey, DJ Williams, Graham at the rest of them, but there is ZERO leadership in our core group of players. There may be plenty of mentors and good teammates, but no leaders. Not One. Cutler called out BM last offseason and that is the last I’ve heard a Bronco stand up to this clown.
Where is a wiser teammate grabbing this guys face mask and yelling something like “You’re killing yourself with this behavior. You’ll never see one cent of endorsement money acting like this” As BM is all about money, you’d think someone would try to reach him through his wallet.
Sadly, I still promise all of you that he’ll get rich if Denver is dumb enough to cut ties with him. Only takes two teams to create a bidding war and there would be 10+ teams after BM. BM is all about making more money and once he gets paid, he’ll turn it back on. His legal issues and potential for a lengthy suspension will prevent him from scoring a Larry Fitzgerald type deal, but he would still secure a huge deal that would shock most of you. It would be for a hell of a lot more than one year at the league minimum. I’m just being honest with you guys, I don’t like that fact anymore than you do.
Another thing, for those of you that are parents, would you give in to this kind of behavior? Of course not. I’m sure McDaniels will handle this situation in a manner that benefits the organization, not BM.
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
Who knows whats going on behind closed doors?
I doubt the players are allowed to discuss this publically, so a Cutler moment isn’t possible under this regime.
No doubt BM gets another chance somewhere else— I think you’re preaching to chior for the most part there. I think Denver has to sit on him as a matter of principle. If that includes a suspension, then so be it. Whatever— the dude remains the property of the Denver Broncos until the very last second expires on his current contract.
The only hope for a fair-market resolution is that some GM is about to spool off on a legendary Ketamine and model glue bender that ends with phone call from some backstreet Budapest slum…or Koko the Gorilla takes over GM duties in Oakland. Otherwise, the Broncos are stuck.

Thank you Mcgeorge
I agree 100%.
The only way we get any decent compensation for this guy is if a team really needs a WR during the course of the season.
Maybe he has played this smart. to the Broncos you want to do this to me then i’ll see to it you don’t get anything for me. I know I can get what I want when all the smoke clears.
Yes McG you are correct in this one.
Its simple
Suspend him! See how not having any money changes his attitude.
"My team's on the floor"
Gene Hackman - Hoosiers
Who is counseling this guy?
Isn’t there anyone that can reach out to him an knock some sense into him? There is no “win” to the scenario he is pushing. Who in thier right mind (I’m looking at you Al Davis) would give this guy a new contract right now?
I didn’t know who his agent was so I looked it up and found the following pretty funny. From his agents mission statement:
“McGuire never compromises his ethical beliefs in pursuit of a client. McGuire makes loyalty, integrity and honesty his top priority in building and maintaining relationships with his clients and in conducting negotiations and he believes in targeting only responsible clients who maintain respect for themselves, their families, the public and their sport.”
What galls me
…is how some in both the local and national media are using this and the Cutler saga to suggest that McDaniels has no control over the team, and that he’s lost his players.
The fact is, the two players with whom he’s had problems are the two players who didn’t attend OTAs and who have been estranged from the team since the announcement of the McD hire.
As Lou Holtz once said (paraphrasing), “It’s easy to motivate players. Just get rid of the ones who won’t be motivated.”
That’s what the Broncos are doing: they are leaving it up to Marshall. If he wants to play and be part of the team, he’s welcome. If he doesn’t, he’s gonna have to wait until his contract ends and the team can get proper compensation.
To me, that’s the way you handle this. And now that Marshall’s behavior has been made public, the onus is on him to get his act together and perform.
The thing is, as a QB, would you throw to this guy at crunch time? What’s to keep him from making a few strategic drops to punish the Broncos?
I just heard that too on ESPN
by Ed Werder. He just didn’t say the lenth and it was obviously for insubordination.

awesome...
It’s like having to give a child a time-out. It’s pathetic that it needed to be done but it is good to get this guy away from the players that want to be there.
Just heard the story again
and ESPN says it is at least for the rest of the preseason. Indefinatly at the moment.
GO BRONCOS IN 2009 AND BEYOND!!
2009 NBA Champions L.A Lakers
2009 NBA Finals MVP Kobe Bryant
Are you suggeting to cut him... and get nothing for him?
Who do you think is offering ANYTHING for this guy right now?
You really think thats in the best interest of the team?
Suspension is the way to go for now and to let it play out…
I agree Theo, get rid of him.
But that is precisely what Brandon wants. If McX cuts him loose, he can sign with any team. Like McGeorge has stated, there are plenty of teams that would give him his big payday. If they wait, they may be able to salvage a draft pick out of someone at least. Then Brandon has no say in where he goes. The biggest problem I see, is that there is no preseason game film to show any interested team, that Marshall has a healthy hip and Hamstring and is capable to play at his previous level. The only thing other teams can see is his unhealthy attitude, and thy will not want to give fair value in trade. If we all pray hard enough, maybe the Cards will trade Boldin straight up. If not, I’m hoping for a real good LB. Most likely, it will be a couple of late round picks at this point.
Thanks NYC. I’m in California this week, and I have to deal with a roaming wireless Modem. So I may have to catch up slowly with everyone.

Big Payday
I disagree about Marshall’s big payday. If that were true we would have already traded him.
McXanders is in control of this one
He gave them the fodder to justify a suspension. They suspended him. It’s perfect.
I agree
Its the only real solution. No play, no money. Give him a month or two to digest that one. Excellent choice by the Broncos and I don’t see anyone saying he didn’t deserve it.

Good Plan
No money, we look at their salaries and think they are all financially viable but it is all cash flow really. If he is set up in a lavish lifestyle missing a few paychecks could bring big hurt.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.
Thanks, NYC.
