The Breakdown: An Open Letter to Brandon Marshall
What the hell is Brandon Marshall thinking? Alienating a fan base isn't the path toward success when your job is entertainment. Alienating a team isn't bright when when you rely on them to aid your performance.
And alienating the people who sign your checks isn't the way to a big pay day in the NFL. I know someone in Denver will read this and maybe they can give him a copy. It sure wouldn't hurt.
Dear Mr Marshall,
Let me paint a picture for you, Mr. Marshall. I am twenty-three years old. I have been working, mostly without pause, since I was seventeen. And for the most part I have been successful.
When things were good I didn't go out and buy an expensive car or rent an expensive place. I kept things within a meager means that I could afford on a single pay check. I had a modest car payment, a modest amount for rent, and modest bills. I planned things out intelligently (or so I thought) and I kept things within reach.
Then the economy tanked. I lost my job of three years (I was management) when the company went under. I was without work for three months and cleaned out my savings, but kept up with my various expenses. In a last ditch effort to get off unemployment I took a job selling cars. It was the only thing I could do that could offer me enough hours.
Long story short I wasn't good at it initially and my paychecks were even less than what I was making on unemployment. I was working sixty hour weeks and still didn't make ends meet and I lost my car and nearly my place.
I have since pulled my way out of debt, but by eating $.10 ramen noodles and working more than nearly everyone else I know. I do this in an effort to save enough money to finish school and make something of my life. I walk to work daily and make the best of a situation that is less than ideal.
And then I see your video. You're slated to make $2.2 Million this season. You lose more money in one day of being a primadonna then I will make in five months of busting my ass. And you expect anyone in this country to have any sort of sympathy for you? I'm not saying that the people who play football do not deserve their salaries. They bust their ass, too, and worked hard and sacrificed to get where they are. But to lose sight of the blessings you've received is a slap in the face for every hard working person in this country. Not everyone is blessed with your physical attributes, but they make the best of it and go out and work hard to support themselves and their families.
Remember, Mr. Marshall, you are barely older than I am and you are making way more than anyone I know. And in any profession you have to pay your dues. And making a pro bowl goes a long way, but you alone are the cause of the hesitations that prevent you from your big pay day.
You can blame it on a lack of trust for those that are above you. You can blame it on an unfair wage vs. your production. You can blame it on a plethora of issues that are neither her nor there. When it comes down to it you could have been a 1st or 2nd round pick, but you weren't because of your off field antics. Your contract could have been much more fruitful going into your career, but you put yourself into situations that created doubts in the minds of those who would pay you. And now Denver can barely get an offer for a fourth round pick for you because you're a liability.
There are too many questions surrounding you for anyone to invest too much because they can't count on you to be there for every game because you find trouble. Its the same reason you can't get any endorsements. Nobody wants a problem child-diva to be the face of their product.
Your agent has failed you. Your yes men have failed you. If you want a shot of success you need to change the people around you who build you up when you're being a waste of a roster slot and show you how things really are. The world is an unforgiving place.
Grow up.
Sincerely,
Christian L

Wow! You stopped me dead! I gotta tell you something...
I am from the KC site. I admit, I was going to pop in here and sling shit at you guys because your team is imploding. Then I picked your post ramdomnly to start my teasing comments.
But I can’t now. I mean seriously, I feel so so so so much exactly like you about a lot of players who act like him over money. Or treat their fans like shit. It’s the family that saves up money on a minimum wage two income family, they save all year so they can take their kids to see their football heroes.
So some 2 tooth missing 7 year old kid can cheer them on. All year they saved so they could contribute to the mansion/limo fund of some unappreciative asshole who could care less about anything like that.
Anyway, you took the wind out of my sails and now I feel like a dick. I forget how much you guys must love your team too. If it’s anything like I love my Chiefs, then you dont need me being a smart ass and rubbing it in.
So, I’de just like to say thanks for making me think. I feel better. And I’m sorry too. I uhhh…well…uhh.. allright I’ll say it..Good luck this season..God that hurt to say I hate the Broncos!

Great to see some civility from opposing fans!
Good luck to your boys too (other than KC-Den matchups)
Classy comment, Kray
Thanks.
You know what inspires me? The fact that so many fans, even bitter rivals, are drawn together by this issue. Fans are loaded to the teeth with pride — more even than players, quite often. When we’re burned by self-centeredness from a star athlete whose salary we pay with our hard earned money, we’re all suddenly on the same team. Football as a whole, the integrity of the game, suffers.
American football is, by nature, a humbling pursuit for players and fans alike. Most of the elite players, like most passionate fans, understand that you have to keep the faith with those around you. We lift each other up even as we bemoan a shanked field goal or despair the loss of a beloved veteran like Tony G, B Dawk, or D Will. As fans we’re all in this together.
One thing, though (ChristianL’s excellent letter notwithstanding). The Broncos will be fine this year, so feel free to talk some smack if ya like. But I’m glad you understand and have opted not to on this post. You KC guys are all right sometimes.

Very classy Krayfish
Thanks for the good words. I friggin hate your chiefs too, but we’re all like-minded when it comes to this kind of behavior from any NFL player. Keep it real man. Good luck to you guys too.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.
I've always respected the Chiefs
I’ve never had the viritol towards them I did the Raiders and, to a lesser extent, the Chargers.
Good luck to you, and may the best team (other than the Raiders) win the division!
This is the last time as a staffer of MHR....
…that I rec a comment with some of the language I read here. But you know…

Thanks for the letter
I enjoyed it. Nice story, and it would be great if Brandon read and listened.
Also, good job krayfish, I appreciate your lack of trollmanship :)
Well said, Rec'd!
I wish Brandon could understand your point, but it seems that he’s just one of those truly ugly personalities who will always think they’re right and make everything about them. In his mind, I truly think he believes he’s being picked on by the media, the fans, and by management.
I’m glad he’s suspended. I’m happy with the way Coach has handled this entire issue and the professionalism he’s shown. I’m disappointed IF nobody in the locker room has started fighting with Brandon over his poor sportsmanship. I really hope Dawk starts laying into him on the field and off. We need some locker room leadership forcing accountability where management can’t always do.
Truly great reading, btw.
I agree, but I think the people that did step up were ignored.
Its hard to get through to someone who believes they are entirely in the right. And when the people around fan the flames and encourage the behavior its almost impossible the change that persons perceptions.
Agents in this sport are ridiculous. First off, for the most part, they’re terrible salesmen. First rule of sales is to make the sale. These season long hold outs and rookie hold outs are pointless. Crabtree is going to lose a ton of money listening to his idiot agent and Marshall now believes he can get away with anything if it means a trade and a new contract. I’m sure his agent was pretty pissed about the video, but can blame himself for the behavior.
I’m still one of the ones that truly believes that Cutler never wanted to leave Denver, but was led to believe his actions would lead to a ground breaking contract by Bus Cook.
As a salesperson there is something to be said about earning control and using it to your advantage. But when you put the person whom you’re selling into a position where they’re worse for wear you’re doing yourself a disservice. You can buy a really nice bed, but it won’t always help you sleep at night.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
Well, the truth is..
Shannahan owned that team. He was the Godfather to the players. McDaniels had no choice but to step in establish his turf. Those who won’t respect him need to be gone. It’s divisive otherwise. So, for the crap McD gets for being the reason for all this, the important thing is how he handles all this and rally’s his troops.
He gets a year to get it together, to be fair anyway.

Great post and letter.
You can’t really say much after that because you cover it. I will say this though, I have never ever wanted a Bronco to be suspended for anything. However I am really glad his is. I know he doesn’t like his situation, yet neither did Boldin and isn’t he showing up and putting forth the effort because I have heard anything about him for some time. If Marshall doen’t want to put forth the effort then Bowlen shouldn’t put the effort in paying him at the moment. If I acted like this at work I would be suspended to, if not fired.

I guess I appreciated and rec’d your post more than anything because you are a true, hard-working American. It’s refreshing to have a real “average joe” post such a wonderful letter.

Great read, man. I think Brandon Marshall is a piece of shit, and I hope the Broncos lose when they play us, but you are completely correct in everything you say, and I hope everything works out for you OK. Good luck!
Thanks.
And I hope English isn’t a bust for you.

Wow, quite a reaction you got from KC, Christian
You clearly hit a nerve that every football fan is familiar with. Great job!

dude ur my hero
I’m 21 a senior in college I feel ya bro, working hard 40 hours a week and going to college is tough, u may have had a tougher road but we real folks understand that these athletes who whine about their salaries are just acting the furthest things from men.

Excellent, Christian
I don’t know what you are studying in school, but if you bring this kind of passion and clarity to your career, you will be just fine, my friend.
And thanks for the civility from the KC fans here. I hope this would be a trend that takes hold in this family of sites. There are dozens of sites I can go to and pick a smack fight at, but there are precious few where I can go and just enjoy different points of view with fans that don’t see the world in shades of blue and orange. It would be nice if the SBNation was that kind of place.

Did you only send this to MHR?
I seriously think you should consider mailing this to the Denver Post, or local news/radio stations there. Try somehow to get him/his friends/momma to read it. Great letter Christian. As someone who has been jobless for about two months and no light at the end of the tunnel that I can see, I totally get it. Totally.

You'll get there.
I spent about five months out of work, after quitting a job I couldn’t stand any more. (This was back when the economy hadn’t been flushed completely down the toilet yet, and even then it probably wasn’t the smartest move.) I’m working again now, not necessarily in a job I ever thought I’d have when I started searching, but I love it.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel – keep feeling your way through it, it’ll show up.
Good job! Like sadaraine said: “It really helps to see what each route is about and why they are or are not effective.”, thats exactly how I feel. It’s almost an extension to MHR-University for me, learning more about those systems than I already know. Great work!

oh no, my computer is being a ****, and now I am posting the wrong comment for the wrong article. Sorry for that.
I wanted to say I enjoyed reading your letter, and it shows exactly how I feel. It comes straight from the heart, and I wish more people/ Broncos fans could read this.

Thanks Christian
Loved your letter…BM needs to read this as well…Not so sure that he would “get” the message but he need to read it none the less…Thanks
Well maybe Mr. McBath or Mr. Royal will pass it along. I hear they read MHR on occasion. But then again, like I said previously, I’m sure much more influential people have said the same to deaf ears.
Time will tell. I still have hope for B-Marsh. He’s still young.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
Very Solid!
When I was in the Army, I use to tell my troops (and now I tell my children) this: If you are man (or woman) enough to make a desicion, you better be man (or woman) enough to live with those consequences, for better or worse.
That letter hits the heart, and is a reflection of every working man (or woman) in the U.S.
ChristianL, you are a true credit to the Bronco maniacs world wide, thank you for putting your heart out there for us. That showed great strength.
Strength and honor
One problem....
Does BM even know how to read?
Christian
I like what you wrote. Keep your head up, keep working hard, stay in school, and try not to worry too much about the Ramen noodle diet. You’ll get there, and you’ll be a better man for having worked your butt off. I wish I owned my own business so I could fly you out and put you to work for me.
This song’s for you!

I HATE Ramen, Mac and Cheese, and Hamburger Helper…. haven’t really had any since the last major economic downturn. I also hate sleeping in a car (because I had to, not just because it was convenient, lol) trying to pick out a “safe” parking spot, and showering at the Y. Lot of things you would think Marshal might relate to, with all the stories of athletes who made it coming from less than privileged backgrounds, but I guess not. I am grateful for a lot in my personal life now, as well as in my “Bronco” fandom. I will appreciate this suspension as well, both for the sake of the Broncos as well as the object lesson it will provide for my 14 year old step-son, who was initially horrified when he saw the news on ESPN. Life with McDaniels has been a rough ride for him so far…. I wish Marshal would try to understand and accept it a fraction as well as my stepson has.
I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok.

If there is any Broncos players reading MHR right now....
pass this one on to Marshall when he gets back.

I hope YOU and MHR don't mind
I put this letter on a football mom’s site where I’m hoping it will clog the blogs….giving you and MHR full credit. It has received some response. It has given some of MY football mamas an initiative to write a similar letter to Crabtree amoung others. lol I appreciate your sentiments…my family and I have been deeply affected by the economy also. My hubby lost his job of over 21 yrs. as a glass welder back in March. I became a sahm about 5 or 6 yrs. ago…I couldn’t find a decent job as a CPA..sending out dozens of resumes. Altho, I must admit…I was on total meltdown when I decided to be at home for my family. I still don’t know if I want to deal with numbers (anyone’s) today. Thus, the reason I really can’t find a CPA job. Sshhhh Don’t want to get into specifics at this time. I just wanted to say thank you and… I sincerely wish you all my families best with your future endeavors! Oh, and GO BRONCOS! WOOT!

100% agree-I'm recruiting!
I would love for some of the die hard football ladies I know to find their way here…I encourage them. I love this site! I have learned so much about the x’s and o’s of football in the short time I’ve been here. I look forward to more! My hubby is actually intimidated…lol! HA I actually know what a nickel D is now…he didn’t! hahahaha Hats off to all the contributors.
I found this letter to ‘hit home’ mostly due to the fact we are just the average joe shmo die-hard Bronco fan family….living paycheck to paycheck these days. Just 6 short months ago…we were looking towards being debt free except for our mortgage. I see that being far out of reach at this time. WE have to start over. My point with my responses in a nutshell…it has humbled me. I wake up thankful for what I do have. I wish BM and others like him would wake up, grow up and be thankful for the gifts/talents bestowed upon them and use them to best of their ability. (in a perfect world) Off my soap box now. Thanks for reading KK!
