Orton Injury Update

Last night during the 2nd quarter of the Broncos vs. Bears game at Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium Kyle Orton left the game with an apparant injury to his index finger.  The injury was sustained when Orton, following through on a pass smacked his hand into the on coming rusher. Orton quickly raised his hand to show the sidelines and immediately came out of the game. Kyle Orton had an open dislocation of the distal interphalangeal joint of the right index finger. The bone broke the skin. Additionally, he may have a fracture with it as well. Several teammates on the sidelines heard Orton screaming in pain while "Greek" put the finger back in place. Orton did not return to the game and his post game comments about being ready "mentally" lead me to believe that he could be out for a while and that the Broncos will begin a search for another QB.

I hear Jeff George wants to make a comeback?????

A dislocation was implied in the Post:

Orton had a delayed reaction to his injury … It then appears his finger was yanked into place. Teammates could hear Orton scream in pain before he was escorted to the locker room.

I believe that the detailed diagnosis was made by the original poster, as I have not been able to find another web reference. However, it is plausible since this type of injury is real (e.g. this link), and an open (bleeding) dislocation is more common when the distal (last) joint has been injured.

The news is now in

Orton did not have a dislocation nor a fracture. The report is inaccurate.

Wow

I thought it was just a cut from a fingernail. Sorry to hear that guys. I liked that kid that came off the bench for you though from Fresno State. He looked good!

Look at the video

Thanks to HDTV, you can clearly see something was sticking out of the finger when he comes off the field. It wouldn’t surprise me if McD already had a conversation along the lines of, “Hey, if you’ve got an injury, don’t come off the field showing it to the whole world.” (JK)

Click here follow the instructions and get the video. You’ll see it.

I thought the same thing when I read “mentally ready.”

On a side note, though he is clearly not ready for prime time, I really liked what I saw from Brandstater. Playing with and against the starters, he made some rookie mistakes but didn’t seem at all overwhelmed. If he continues to progress, he gives some hope for the future at QB.

This is what we wanted...
Hey, look what we got!

I tend to agree....

No, Im not a doctor. The blow that caused the problem wasnt a cutting or slicing blow to the finger, it was a hand to finger blast. This is NOT good, but I hope Im wrong. Nothing else could of sliced that finger externally, so it must have been sliced internally, and most likely from a bone that was snapped from a blunt impact, so you can all draw your own conclusions…

Hello Eric, this is Josh calling again…Hey buddy, how’s our boy Derek Anderson looking these days? We might just be in the market? lol

I Hate To Say This

But in the long run I think this will help your team.

by Gesiakob on Aug 31, 2009 9:41 AM MDT up reply actions

I thought the same thing once we scored after Brandstater started settling down

We drove using mostly running plays but with a few really nice passes from Brandstater. The RBs seemed to run harder, the Defense played tougher and with Orton out, Sims out, Martin for emergencies, doesn’t it make sense to play Brandstater for the whole game on Thursday, speeding up his play, expanding the play book. The kid has got a big arm, maybe as big as the Cutler guy :). If McD can get this Team to 4-0 with Branstater running the offense, Moreno running the ball and BDawk clobbering WRs, the hush in the MSM will be defening.

daaayyyyuuummmm. that sounds awful

brandstater may get the trial by fire. i’m excited to see how he does!

Very dramatic...

Are you sure about this? Just from watching the video?

Smokey, my friend, you are entering a world of pain.

by TJ Johnson on Aug 31, 2009 9:40 AM MDT reply actions

Hope you're wrong for two reasons,

but I’m afraid you’re right. It sounds like open dislocations are pretty common with this joint. First, it would be a major blow to have Orton gone for any length of time. Second, why would any trainer do a reduction on the playing field of an open dislocation? During a pre-season game? I’m no doctor, but from what I can gather on the internet there can be major complications from this type of dislocation, and it’s possible to fracture the bone in attempting to reduce the dislocation.

I seriously do not understand why McDaniels kept the current training staff.

by Snaggins on Aug 31, 2009 9:55 AM MDT reply actions

Kevin O'Connell?

Will Denver pursue Kevin O’Connell?

He makes sense to me over Brandstater for a couple of reasons. First, he has worked in the New England system and knows the basics. And he was drafted in the 3rd round, so McDaniels must think fairly highly of him and think he has some ability. I heard NE was looking to cut him or already has.

This is not consistent with what Orton said after the game:
On if he is worried about being able to play in the season opener at Cincinnati

“No, I will be ready to go. I am going to work as hard as I can. I don’t know how long I will be out, but mentally I will be ready to go and I think physically I will be, too.”

If all of this had happened, he’d be out for the season.

Kyle Orton had an open dislocation of the distal interphalangeal joint of the right index finger. The bone broke the skin. Additionally, he may have a fracture with it as well.

A man does what he has to do, and sometimes it’s not what I believe he should do. There’s no reason to use up energy hating him for it. Shoot him if you have to, but don’t hate him.

Connell has to clear waivers and I doubt he gets by K.C, especially with their QB problem right now

Maybe they can replace it with a stronger finger?

I apologize in advance

I was thinking to myself, why does my blood boil every time I see Bob in Boulder making a post? Then I realized it’s your avatar! Something about Mr. Bettman, really, really p*sses me off. Just look at the way he cocks his head in that photo. Ugh. It just irritates me.

So what happens is that even before I read your comment, I’m already mad. I’ll try to keep it under control. So if I ever reply to one of your comments in what seems to be anger, keep this “aplogy” in mind. :)

Is really a slam on Bettman. From The Onion. He is posed in front of a combo NHL/Food Network background proudly announcing the NHL’s new TV contract with the Food Network. A slam on their deal with OLN (now Versus), and on what he has done “to” (not for) the popularity of the NHL over the past many years.

Not That Serious

I am inclined to think the injury was not too serious or Orton would not have been making post-game comments to that effect.

Keep Moving Forward.

I just found this and watched it twice

I used to see the type of injury that you’re describing from time to time. If you watch the highlights video from NFL films, Orton’s face isn’t distorted by the kind of pain that injury would cost him. He holds the finger up to the sideline – his shoulders are up, his face is fairly relaxed and he’s moving the hand without any major pain. These factors aren’t consistent with your diagnosis. I appreciate your input, but as a former physician – I’ll wait for more information. Thanks for posting, though – I know you’re trying to help, and thanks for that.

Agreed

It just looked like a deep cut, ESPN said he required stitches. I could see him being out for a week or 2, which just sucks because that means he won’t be able to throw the ball during this period

The thing I worry about...

…is the look of alarm he gets when he looks at it. I ripped open my arm playing baseball in high school (the school district intentionally installed the fence upside down to discourage climbing), it felt like a charley horse, I walked all the way back to first base without even checking, but when I looked at it I almost swooned. I had a major anatomy lesson staring back at me. He looked like I felt.

I worry that its more than minor, at least.

by PredominantlyOrange on Aug 31, 2009 1:19 PM MDT up reply actions

yeah, good point. he didn’t even seem fazed, until he actually looked down and saw his finger. he was watching the pass sail out of bounds before he even reacted to the injury

by lolcopter on Aug 31, 2009 1:26 PM MDT up reply actions

What the Heck?

How did it happen in the first place? I did not see Orton hit the defender’s helmet. All I saw was the defender’s right gloved hand brush Orton’s right hand. Did he have a box-cutter in there? It was just too weird without more explanation.

as a Bears fan im devasted to hear that Orton got hurt i liked him when he played for us

but honestly I like Cutler way more

by BEARSFAN19 on Aug 31, 2009 12:11 PM MDT reply actions

Seriously? Wheres the source,

and don’t tell me that it is just your speculation. Which teammates heard him?

Since you just joined today, I have a hard time simply buying what you say without a source.

by jibbons on Aug 31, 2009 12:44 PM MDT reply actions

I'd like to know the source as well.

But honestly it wouldn’t surprise me, Orton had a very dramatic face coming off the field and looking at his finger, like he was suprised and hesitant at the same time; it could be more serious than he and the coach admitted to. (might have to do with the strict reporting policy)

Also I am not worried. Orton was looking good, but Brandstater has shown some flashes, and most people have summed us up to be in a rebuilding year anyways. So why not let the Rook develop under center. I think it will be amazing for us in the future, although the immediate hope of a winning season will become even more speculative.

We can’t control injury, or let it ruin our moods. It happened last year and we had nothing positive to focus on. This year we’ve got a TON of young talent and as many other MHR-goers have said. I would be happy with a 5-11 season as long as the team shows powerful effort, and constant growth as a unit, and individually.

Any thoughts there?

But I looked through some of the comments and shuddered. I pray that most of those alleged “fans” never stumble on to this site. I have absolutely Zero interest in the Denver Post any longer.
