Brian Dawkins has broken hand

Mike Klis of the Denver Post is reporting that Broncos S Brian Dawkins has a broken hand.  The report does go on to say that the injury should not keep Dawkins from starting the season September 13th against the Cincinnati Bengals.

UPDATE - Vic Lombardi, via Twitter, confirmed the injury and stated that Dawkins has already undergone surgery for the injury.

While Dawkins is not officially out for the Pre-Season, is there any real need to put him out there?

Sure it could.

Would you rather he have a broken leg? He will be back.

It an opportunity..

… for Dawkins to use a club on opposing wide recievers. I wouldn’t want to be smacked with a cast every play, would you?

This sucks even though it is only two weeks

I don’t see a reason he needs to play too much during the preseason anyways and now with the injury, he can sit and wait for the opener.

He needs to play...

… to connect with his players. He’s supposed to fill a leadership role on a team with more fresh faces than not. I’ve never played football, but that seems like something harder to do from the sidelines.

Not saying he should go BACK out anytime soon, but that’s why it’s a worthwhile risk when he’s healthy. Wasn’t Dawkins the guy quoted all over the place a week ago about how important it is to put on the pads and hit each other in training camp?

It's not like he hasn't been doing it for 13 seasons or anything.

He’ll be fine. A little rest at the beginning of the year might just do him some good. Keep his body fresh for later in the season.

The last thing I’m worried about with Brian Dawkins is his mind and leadership. He’s still seen it all. He’ll still be in that practice huddle, talking and teach, pads or no pads. And I have a nagging suspicion he won’t be outta shape either….

Totally agree

He’ll be fine. Sure he needs to spend some more time with his teammates and picking up the defense, but he’s been doing this forever, is very smart, and will still be around to watch and learn. Better that than pushing it unnecessarily, esp since pre-season is already dangerously too long. If it’s just a fracture he’ll be back in at the end of pre-season, which is fine. At least the team has a bit more depth there this year than last, and it gives some of the younger guys a chance to play more for a bit.

All that said of course, it sucks to break anything!

I'm not worried about this at all.

He now gets to rest for the pre-season, and he’s ready for the first game. He’ll still be avialable to mentor during the pre-season. This is news, but not Earth shattering. All is well.
