Goodman is good for Denver.
Living in South Florida, I got to see the Dolphins play quite a bit. I really liked watching Goodman, he is a solid upgrade from a declining Bly. Miami had not intention of resigning Hill, but there were bummed to see Goodman go (we are seeing why). Sounds like he is fitting in well in Denver and hopefully forces teams to throw at Champ every now and again.

While I would have liked to see a little more action at NT, I’m pretty psyched that they focused on upgrading the secondary and ST with some of their picks this year. Crossing fingers. But I do like Goodman, a lot!

Quick question, how were the DB's aligned?
Has there been any physicality at the line and does this suit Goodman? I know that Champ prefers to play off his man at the line of scrimmage, and I know that was one of Bly’s criticisms last year, so I was just wondering if any coverage changes, like jamming or tight coverage (thanks to hoosierteacher for finally defining these in a thread a while ago!) have been evident so far.

If there is one thing I am not worried about seeing more of than Cutler it is interceptions.

My only concern is Prater and how he still seems to be having issues — shouldn’t be long before we see a free agent step into camp. Now I need to find an up to date list so I know who is available =)

I Don't Boo My Team
It is my team.
Yes I want a good kicker I hope they work on that issue.
As for the rest I think McD summed it up nicely. You never have a good day when it is Offense vs Defense because when someone makes a play it means someone else screwed up.

Booing Prater is A-OK
I’m not for booing the rest of the team at a practice, but there is NOTHING wrong with booing Prater. He has no competition (NONE) in practice so if he is ever going to grow a pair, maybe he will after hearing the home crowd hate on his weak performance.
He needs a good hard kick in the pants some way or another. This free ride onto the roster had to end somewhere.

Relax about the booing
It’s been overstated by those that weren’t there- I was. There were cheers, there were boos, there was laughter,- everybody was having a good time. It was a 3/4 speed scrimmage that was playing to the crowd. “We talkin’ ’bout PRACTICE.”
Relax, people- it really wasn’t that big of a deal.

Agree completely
I agree with Allbroncsallday. Prater was the only one who really got it bad, and honestly I believe McDaniel’s handled it well. The team started off the field after the first miss and was sent back out. This caused more booing, especially after the second try was no good. Prater was suddenly under a lot of pressure and it was a much better training opportunity that it would have been otherwise. Hats off to McDaniels who seems to use every opportunity to help bring someone along in their development. It was a lot of fun to watch.
by zman18b on Aug 7, 2009 7:24 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yep
And zman’s right- Prater really was the only one, and it only came after he’d missed the second one. Once he finally made one, the resulting cheer was louder than all of the prior booing put together.
The bsm is pushing this “Crowd boos Broncos” baloney, but as usual, the story they’re pushing is inaccurate.

Regardless of the level of booing I still think there is a problem...
,…bear with me while I explain.
While I acknoweldge from those that were there that the booing last night was more limited than the media have made out I’m still disapointed to hear it happened, but not surprised
From what I have seen on the telly it pretty much seems standard now that whenever Denver lose a real game, the crowd at Invesco Field voice their displeasure loudly, (those of course that are left after the fairweather fans have all gone home, having given up on their team by the 3rd Quarter, another unpleasant trend I hasten to add).
I’m pretty sure after the Jacksonville upset in 1996 i don’t recall mass booing from the Mile High faithful. Perhaps Mile High regulars can set me straight here. I only ever saw the Broncos win whenever I came over physically to Denver so of course I only saw happy Denver fans in the stands!
It’s no better this side of the Atlantic. 10 years ago if my football (“soccer”!!) team Fulham lost there would be no booing by the crowd. Now if we lose to anyone other than a giant team like Manchecter United, then a chorus of loud boos ring out, even if the team played hard.
Personally I find it embarrasing. I was bought up to cheer for your team through thick and thin, and I’m only 38! What’s changed? Has our society got so self-absorbed such that we think we have the right to demand success all the time from our athletes and that gives us the right to boo them, even if they have left it all on the field in an attempt to win (PS the right to boo the likes of Dale Carter is a different story!).
by British Bronco on Aug 7, 2009 8:12 AM MDT reply actions 1 recs
Maybe Elway spoiled us
with all those magical 4th quarter comebacks, culminating in a SuperBowl win. We’ve had plenty of other comebacks since then, but no SBs.
Like it or not, and though my expectations remain high, I am approaching this season as a rebuilding year and will be modifying my patience quotient… well, not a lot, but a little.
I think it’s okay to voice your frustration as loudly as you can, but the spirit of it should be such that the team feels like you’re sharing their frustration, not writing them off as losers.
That said, AB made an excellent excellent point. This time of year, it’s just practice. The team has a lot of training left to do.

I just don’t always like the way you express your opinions — as I’m sure you don’t like the way I express mine.
I don’t need constant optimism. I just want constructive criticism.
I love the info here — and I love the articles. What I can do without is some of the sanctimony: if you go out of your way to SHOW how open you are to all opinions, rather than just being open to all opinions, you create a strained atmosphere where people spend an inordinate amount of time gushing.
I understand the need to keep things civil, having run a very successful website myself — and having had to go to court and get a restraining order on at least one troll. But there’s a difference between that kind of behavior and saying something salty from time to time.

It’s funny. I love fantasy baseball, but that’s because baseball itself is so simple that the fantasy version becomes a kind of abstract math competition. Football is awesome precisely because there are way, way too many variables involved to make statistical prediction a worthwhile exercise.
It’s why I can’t really watch baseball any more (too much luck involved; the best team only wins 60% of the time), and why the hundreds of ways to gain advantage in a football game are just so compelling.

And yeah, there were some boos. You’re mistaken to think otherwise.

From DB.com
On both touchdown plays, Orton rolled out of the pocket to avoid pressure before finding the veteran receiver, who seemed to always find an open space in the defense.
Is this a good sign for the D line, considering we are going against our awesome O line? Are we getting a rush? Or is it more of the almost-there-but-not-soon-enough stuff? Anyone who was there last night care to comment?

In my opinion, the defense is looking good.
It appears that we got some interior push on a couple of occasions. Otherwise, the QBs were just stepping up in the pocket as the outside rushers were ushered around. I was impressed by the defense overall, and especially the cornerbacks. The OLBs appear to be progressing pretty well, with Tim Crowder really showing some streaks of talent. I thought Doom looked tentative though. Ayers had a couple good rushes, but overall looks like he is working on pure talent rather than technique at this point. He definitely shows real potential though. Moss has to learn how to use his height and speed to his advantage, as he is still letting blockers get under his body. Overall, I am hopeful and I think there is a lot of talent across the board. I am soooo happy to see the team working on fundamentals as I could not have withstood another season of missed tackles and flying helmets.

Not sure I agree
One of the things I’ve learned in my nearly 2 decades as a bronco fan is that Denver is one of the BEST cities for football nationally. Really Colorado is just great for their sports teams in general cough not rockies cough lol. but honestly, the fact that we boo our team is not so drastic of a thing. I love the fact that our fans are
A. Passionate to show up to a practice in such numbers
B. Passionate enough to sell out the arena for how many straight years now?
C. Passionate enough to show their displeasure at unsatisfactory results, and cheers at good results.
I’m tired of the nation where from elementary school on people are being trained there are no losers, my freaking highschool had 2 homecoming queens because they didn’t want one of the 2 top finalists to get all butt hurt. pardon my french
I love Denver because we (no I don’t live there anymore but grew up and have strong family ties) are not afraid to show our true feelings. No coddeling. No cupping of the sack, just pure, unadulterated passion.
So please stop whining about people booing. It really is a posotive in the long run. At least IMHO

I hate the "everybody's a winner" mindset, as well.
But that’s not what this is about. This is about showing support for a team that is one week into practice, with new coaches, a new system, and a new QB.
And I doubt very much the booing had anything to do with any dissatisfaction with the play of the Broncos. It was about acting toward McDaniels and Orton as they’ve been taught over the past few months to act by the mainstream press and the football “experts,” all of whom preach team, but all of whom simultaneously pan that concept when it’s actually put into practice, and when somebody like Cutler (who more and more people are now willing to share stories about, none of which show him in a positive light off the field) is shown the door for refusing to buy into it.
by JeffG on Aug 7, 2009 12:03 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can understand that,
Maybe I am just an idiot, but I raised loving, and loving to hate the broncos. I mean my aunt was the loudest person at any football party whether we were winning or losing. And it was never just unconditional posotivity, it was cheers AND jeers. And frankly I wouldn’t have it any other way.
It CAN"T just be the media conditioning people about mcdaniels and orton because look at who they boo’d the most PRATER. This is just our fans showing their love and support on both ends of the HAPPY and NOT HAPPY spectrum. And I would be SHOCKED!! if the boo’s were in actuality out of honest to god anger and distain, rather than good natured love/hate fandom.

Some of that
I think that there was some of that, but really, the loudest, clearest boos came down after Prater missed the second. That was a clear indication of dissatisfaction with the play of one particular would-be Bronco. But sure, some of it was some of that, I’m sure- bound to be some ticked off fans in the crowd that are just angry. I didn’t get the sense that it was an overall attitude from the crowd, but you know the angry ones are mixed in there.
There were some barely heard indications of dissatisfaction shown towards Orton from some, after he’d already thrown two picks, hanging a longish throw up toward the end. Not much, and not loud.
I’ve heard St. John The Elway shown those same indications of dissatisfaction with his play at Mile High, so I’m not sure that it means anything.
Some think it means something, but I’m just not concerned about it.

I guess that would be a better assesment of my true point. really all I was trying to point out is what you said…..we shouldn’t be concerned with the boo’s (if I did in fact understand your point)
All I want people to realize is, it takes as much passion to JEER your own team as it does to CHEER for them (not counting fairweather Fans, which we have very few of in my observation.)
What most people don’t realize is this…..What is the opposite of LOVE?
The answer?: Complete and utter lack of care. Hate is in fact the CLOSEST emotion to love there is, and therefore having a Love/Hate relationship really only means you care the utmost for your team no matter what.
wow maybe I should stop posting such long comments……..lol

And let’s not forget that even so, Denver is not Philly- that is, all booing is not equal.
The “boos” were not the “BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! YOU GUYS SUCK!!” kind of thing. Well, maybe a smidge of that after Prater missed his second, but not much.
Really, the boos were more like “Boo, that sucked, c’mon now!!” encouragement.

I think some of the most vehement comments I ever uttered
were directed at The Duke. And that’s exactly right — it was much more of a “C’mon, John! Get it together and kick their a$$!”

this isn't a no one loses thing
it’s the fact that you are going to a free practice to watch your team, you should support them.

+1
Especially when it was free to attend. I understand the right to boo when you ponied up the bucks to buy a ticket, but booing a free practice one week into Training Camp is definately weak sauce IMO.
People can use statistics to prove anything, 87% of all people know that.

What do you mean....
Why would you ‘pony up bucks’ to boo?
I just simply don’t follow the logic….
First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and we oughtta let someone else have a fair shot : )

I personally don't boo
But I understand why some do. Fans are the paying customers and if the product is not good, they have a right to express their displeasure. I can follow that logic even if I don’t conduct myself in that manner. I have been bummed out at several games but I don’t boo.
My comment was anti-booing. I don’t want Broncos fans to boo our team ever but I think it’s especially dumb to go to a free practice and boo. Kind of like going to the soup kitchen and then complaining about the quality of the meal. To me it seems much more logical to complain about a meal if you are paying for it, then if it’s free.

Where is the Moreno signs update? Come on kid. Sign your contract and get you butt in Camp.
I’ve been waiting for the Moreno signs update for a week. It’s past time I see it.

Some good nuggets from Broncotalk.
“Ryan Clady had some really nice plays, a few that fascinated me in particular. Successful teams in recent years past, like the Steelers with Alan Faneca or the Seahawks with Steve Hutchinson, will pull a guard to the other side during a run play. The Broncos did that last night too, but with their left tackle, at least twice. Clady’s quick enough where he stepped in front of Ben Hamilton and blocked Ronald Fields one-on-one, while Hamilton picked up the weakside backer. Both times, Fields didn’t stand a chance. That’s McDaniels recognizing that you don’t have to be a skill-position player to be a weapon.”
“Because you’re not there in the playbook and in the huddle, it’s hard to tell who’s to blame when the defense breaks down. But twice last night, it was clear Alphonso Smith made mental mistakes that cost the team touchdowns. You can tell by the nonverbal communication – when a teammate points at Smith after a score and shouts what the play was, and Smith nods in understanding and shakes his head in self-disappointment, it’s clear he knows he goofed. Smith did make plays though, including a pass break-up of Stokley and a big blocked pass on a blitz.”

That was a great play
That pass break-up showed super recognition of where he was and where the QB was in his throwing motion. He recognized that “Hey, I’m not gonna get there in time…”, slowed his rush just a touch, and timed his jump superbly. Rook made a great play there.

Schefter just noted
@Adam_Schefter: Broncos and Knowshon Moreno real close to ending his Knowshow. I think deal tonight.
