Broncoman's Thursday night recap

Notes and observations from Mile High Practice on 08/06/09 by Broncoman.

First, I must say being back in Denver is great and taking my daughter to Mile High for the first time to see the Broncos was a special treat.  I am writing this not knowing what the other MHR members saw and I apologize for the tardiness, but my access to the internet is limited right now.  I thought I would detail things as pro and con.

Pro – Driving up Santa Fe and having Uncle Nasty on the radio jamming some Ramstein was very cool, seeing Mile High coming onto I-25 and explaining the Bronco Statue to my daughter was very cool.

Con – Being stupid enough not to take the light rail and sit in traffic on Colfax for 25 minutes waiting to get to the stadium.  Also the jerks in the GMC and other vehiles that tried to cut ahead of people on the off ramp from Colfax.

Pro- Great seats starting out on the northern side of the west bleachers, I got to watch the defense warm up and run through some drills.  Things that I noted were that the defensive lineman definitely are not the most nimble, nor are the majority of the LB’s.  Spencer Larsen seemed small to me compared to the other guys, but more athletic than most of the other LB’s except DJ Williams and Woodyard.  I really think DJ would be better suited outside with Larsen and Woodyard in the middle, but they may be too small for that role on a full time basis.

Con – Getting up to take my daughter to the bathroom and having our seats swiped, people next to us were jerks.

Pro- Moving to the north end zone once they opened that section and getting better seats.

Con – I tried to focus on the front seven for most of the time, they had some decent plays, but as a whole, were not that inspiring.  I did note that Ayers looked very tentative, seemed to be trying to think more than react, which is probably to be expected at this point.   But he was easily handled most of the time he was in there.

Pro- DJ Williams has tremendous speed and quickness, he was always around the play or making the tackle, seems like he should have a good year. The 1st team CB’s also looked very good.

Con- QB play, Orton definitely does not have a strong arm, he hung up far too many passes deep and he has difficulty being accurate to his weakside.  And of course he threw three picks and probably had three more that should of been pciked.  He made some decent plays on some short throws, but I think that was more of a function of the defense not putting any pressure on him and him having guys like Stokely open up later in the play.  He definately seems locked into Stokes and Eddie, I hope that he will be able to get some chemeistry with BM.  I was also hoping to see some more use of the TE's, I think they had one play that they ran for Scheff, but otherwise, they seemed to be a non-factor.  Simms has a better arm, but he held onto the ball way too long and was not as accurate as you would like, he does not seem like that much of an upgrade from Patrick Ramsey when you look at them in similar situations.  I was seriously disappointed with the QB’s.

Pro- Offensive line played very well, look very quick and protected the QB well, handled most of the blitzes very well, again should be a strength of the team, which is always a good thing.  It was interesting how many sweeps they ran with Buckhalter in the game, I am guessing that will be a staple of the running game this year with Moreno.

Con- Prater, guy shanks two FG attempts and finally makes a third.  I am not for booing guys, especially in practice, so con to the crowd who booed him.  But he definitely needs to do better.

Pro – My daughter getting her first autograph from Darecl McBath, number 31.  He is now a new favorite of mine.  My daughter is kind of shy and he made sure to say hi and said it was cool she had an old broncos helmet (mine from when I was 6) to sign.  He signed a lot of autographs and seemed like a very nice man, I hope he has a great career.

Con- The jackass who was telling his 18-year old sister to get in front of my daughter and another little girl so he could get an autograph.  The dude had to be at least 30, I told him to chill out and shut up and then he called me a jerk and ran away.  Freaking coward.  I am sure that thing will go on ebay shortly.

Pro – Having a very fun night with my daughter, seeing the hope of a new season, being able to hang out in prime seats at Mile High, great weather.

Careful Broncoman! Apparently everyone that didn’t go to the practice is convinced the QBs did great and saying otherwise is blasphemy and anti-Broncos.

I hope my wife and I didn’t steal your seats…we got there a little late and were surprised to find two great seats in an otherwise full section. We asked the people sitting next them if they were open and they said they were.

Nice write up…I agree on most of your points. I actually thought Ayers looked pretty good (considering it’s his second day at practice or something like that). The light rail is definitely the key to an easy, hassle-free Mile High experience, ESPECIALLY during real games.

So are you going to play the martyr the rest of your life?

It’s not blasphemy to offer criticism of Orton or anyone else — though it’s wise to temper that criticism by noting the QBs were six days into installing the offense, the defense knows what they are going to run, and the wide receivers and QBs have to read the same things in this system for the offense to click.

What is unwise is to break out the hyperventilating ALL CAPS and start off a thread with “Orton SUCKED!!!” Backpedal from it all you want now, but it’s precisely the kind of reaction one expects from people who don’t really follow football closely, not from someone who reads this site regularly.

I said as much. Get over it and move on.

+1

On the football points.

If I’m in the whiner category, I disagree. I think any and all criticism is fair and reasonable on this forum. I took exception to the booing and merely pointed out that its a little early to get concerned about any aspect of the offense. I respect those opinions that Orton isn’t doing well, but I don’t have to agree. In the case of Orton, I haven’t a clue. I can only go by what I’ve read.

I see a tendency for everybody always having to clarify their comments at MHR. Its getting a little PC, IMO. Disagreeing with a point of view isn’t automatically a rejection of the other view; nor is it an attack on any aspect of the other person’s competence.

Jeffs just angry

He’s just mad at a few of us that got the best of him today. Jeff G melt downs are not all that frequent, but they are halarious when they happen.

Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.

I can’t wait to watch this team play and make some judgments based on what I see. That San Fran game can’t get here soon enough. Or the Cincy one for that matter.

Thanks for all the write-ups folks. Good to see Moreno sign and good to see Cincy hasn’t signed their 1st rounder.

No need to be PC.

There is criticism (which fans have when they see something not wroking correctly), and there is negativism (which is what trolls do – attacking the players and coaches, often before a single game has even been played).

PNB and Jeff are not trolls. Because of a certain troll commenting under PNB’s story, I think that some folks may have confused PNB’s comments (valid criticism of Orton) with the troll (who just baits people and seems to know nothing about football).

Drop it Jeff.

Orton did suck. It wasn’t a jab at Orton, it was an observation. You went after the guy for making an observation, and in the meantime there were REAL trolls all over the comments section. PNB has been in Orton’s corner all preseason, and he makes one critical remark about Orton and you went ballistic.

Both of you guys are good guys, and you both need to move past this.

Nice one Zappa

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

You Should Check Out Queens Driving

I’ve lived in Fort Collins, Boulder, Denver, and Brooklyn, but Queens is the worst driving experience you can possibly have.

Half the people started driving at age 30 and/or learned how to drive in places like Cairo, Bangalore, and Shanghai.

There’s only one rule to driving in the borough: there are no rules.

by NYCBronx on Aug 7, 2009 8:30 PM MDT up reply actions

Precisely why I stayed out of Queens when I visited last week.

I went to Manhattan (really not much better) and Brooklyn. I heard horror stories about the drivers in Queens though.

Multas Gracias!

Concern is creeping in a bit, can’t lie there…but it’s still early. But more importantly: great to hear your daughter had a great time and got an autograph! That, to me, is REALLY what this is all about…memories and common experience. :o)

Thanks for the post Broncoman

I just can’t imagine booing my own team. Ever…

It’s like boo-ing your wife or something…. It just isn’t logical, captain….

Anyway ya, that’s what I got from your post, like Stu, and it’s awesome that your daughter had a good time…. That would be the small-world happenstance if PNb ‘n’ his wife took your seats incidentallyofco-ness…. And there’s plenty to look FORWARD to!!! We’re toootally gettin there! Thanks again Broncoman!!!

First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and we oughtta let someone else have a fair shot : )

Cool Post Brocoman!

along with the other takes we can get an accurate description of the events and be able to each make up our minds on where our beloved team is at, to this point. I’m glad you had a good experience with your daughter. Those are the memories you can cherish for a long time. Rec’d.

thanks

this is great feedback and the manner in which you wrote it shows a lot of maturity. Great perspective. I am actually a kool-aid drinker, but this is exactly the reality check I am looking for. Orton’s limitations and some of the D’s limitations becoming clear. I don’t think it really means much at this point, but if we are still seeing it in three weeks??

Thanks again and I look forward to reading more of your stuff!

Great stuff, and rec'd!

I love hearing the observations, but (being the father of a daughter myself) was especially touched about the points dealing with your girl. I’m glad she had a good time, and I hope to get my daughter to Mile High someday.

Prater, guy shanks two FG attempts and finally makes a third…But he definitely needs to do better.

I really hope he does. I feel like I’m always going to be pissed they didn’t hold on to Hartley instead. Maybe it’s because I don’t pretend to know everything about football talent evaluation (and there are many, many more who know more than me on the subject), yet I had this “feeling” when Denver picked him up off the undrafted line that he’d be a bit better than Prater…and he did pretty well with the Saints last season.

But hey, it’s only the kicker…right? haha We shall see what happens.

Great post. Like teach above me, I enjoyed the personal touch you incorporated with the points concerning your daughter. I don’t know if I will ever get why some people enjoy being jerks…I found it funny that he “ran away” as soon as you confronted him…figures.

Glad you had a good time.

If there's one position that we've been downright spoiled with...

it’s our kicker. Jason Elam was solid as a rock and he could ALWAYS be counted on to be clutch. I really hope Prater’s got it in him to do that as well…There could be a lot of instances this season where it comes down to one or two points, and he’s gotta be solid on it. Jason Elam is (in my opinion) a forever Bronco and call it what you may, but he deserves a spot in the Ring of Fame as well when he retires.
