Horse Tracks 9/12/09 - Shannon Sharpe gets involved in guiding Brandon Marshall
Mornin' MHR Friends! To all my fellow New Yorkers, please shoot me an email at nycbroncosfan@gmail.com if you're interested in meeting up for tomorrow's (and future) games. I know this is last minute, but I had been hoping to get NFL Sunday Ticket Online and it hasn't worked out. I watched most Broncos games last year at Sidebar on 15th and Irving; not sure if that will be the spot again this year. But please email me and hopefully we can put something together!
AP - Brandon Marshall Keeps Lips Sealed On Suspension
Shannon Sharpe got on a three-way call with Rod Smith and BMarsh and gave the young receiver a stern talking to. Big Play Shay says, "Moving forward, I don't think the Broncos are going to have any problems with Brandon Marshall." Personally, I'm thrilled these legends still care enough about the Broncos to help out, even in the absence of Mike Shanahan.

ESPN - Adam Schefter: Richard Seymour expected to arrive in Oakland on Saturday, sources say
Sure, feel bad for Seymour. But Belichick being disloyal? Come on. The guy knows what he's doing. If a player is about to go over the hill (or cost too much to retain), then by all means trade him for a valuable draft pick. That's exactly what Shanny DIDN'T do with Reggie Hayward, Bert Berry and Trevor Pryce. You can't afford to keep everyone, so trade them when you can get value; don't just let them walk during free agency. I HOPE McD is willing/able to make similar choices in future. Foresight is a much better quality than sentimentality when it comes to winning.

Good Morning NYC...Thanks again
Great news on BM…If he can’t pull it together after getting the mentorship from Rod and my boy Shannon, I doubt that he will ever get it together…Come on BM, listen to those that really care about you!

Thanks, NYC
Random question: Does anybody know if Denver is in the blue or in the road unis tomorrow? I seem to recall Cincy wearing white at home at times….
by PredominantlyOrange on Sep 12, 2009 7:56 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I've been wondering that also
Mostly in regards to the weather – if it’s going to be hot and sunny, the smart thing for the Bengals to do is elect to wear their white uni’s, forcing the Broncos into the darker and hotter blue uni’s. These decisions have to be made well in advance, so I guess we’ll find out tomorrow.
Forecast for Cincinnati tomorrow is a high in the upper 70’s, partly cloudy, and humidity around 50 %.

Totally agree on the legends still being around to help out...
Sounds like Sharpe’s words may have sunk in, hopefully long term.

Yeah
He’s not as down on them as others, but he clearly thinks that cutler leaving was a big mistake. He echoed the “if you’re in a shootout, Orton won’t win many of those” which is probably true.
But Shay, how many “shootouts” in the NFL per year are there, and how many of those do you find yourself in?

That is my thought
Every time I hear that same statement. It seems to be the MSM senitment lately and its replace the “Orton is a noodle arm” sentiment. I think the truth is that they have absolutely no idea of hwo good Orton will be or not in THIS offense with this talent around him.
You notice that not one of them really ever noticed or repeated Orton’s statement that this is the most talented group of players he has ever been around?
Orotn may very well be prepared to wins a shoot out if he needs to and that is exactly what Cultler couldnt do. 17 opportunites in the 2 minute situation last year and all he could produce for us was 1 lousy field goal. You don’t win shoot outs if you can’t score when the pressure is on.

Of course that game counts!!
There are bad calls in every game. There were bad calls against us in the first half of that game! We still had to make the plays! We still had to convert the two pointer and every play (but 1) before that! Predominantly? What are the other colors?

No it doesn't
with regards to how well we did in shootouts. There are bad calls and there are bad calls. Without that one the game is OVER due to an unforced error at a crucial moment. Hochuli’s inadvertent intervention can’t change the fact that Jay choked bigtime at the worst possible moment.

What a load of crap!
In every other instance you fall on the Denver side of the opinion… When it suits you you twist it. (A MHR stable tactic)
You’re saying a bad call in the first half that costs you a possession is worse than the same call in the second half?? It might be more dramatic but it is IDENTICAL!!
by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 12, 2009 10:36 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Come on, WB. The Hochuli call is as close as you can ever come (as a referee) to giving a game to one team over the other. Yes, Cutler and Royal had to make two huge plays afterward, but this was not an iffy/judgment call. It was a 100% no-brainer screw-up, as Hochuli has admitted time and again.

by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 12, 2009 12:51 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
but this was not an iffy/judgment call.
The hand is faster than the eye, and the ball came out of Cutler’s hand just a nano second before his hand started forward. Hochuli (any ref) has to watch a lot of things at one time. His eye saw what his mind told him – that Cutler’s hand was going forward when the ball came out. It was a mistake, but not a no brainer screwup. IMO, anyway.

Umm...
Being behind at the end of the first first half is worse than being behing at the end of the 2nd? It’s IDENTICAL!!
“The grass is always greener.” I agree this tends to happen, and I’m guilty of it too. But a bad call at the end of the game is worse than at the start. At the start you can get riled up and have a chance to compensate. At the end you can just be mad.

I questioned that call,
and felt embarrassed about winning that way, from the very beginning. That’s why, also from the very beginning, I didn’t join in the sneers at the San Diego fans who screamed that they had been robbed. Because I felt that, if the situation had been reversed, I would have felt EXACTLY the same way. So I take exception to your when-it-suits-you comment. I don’t think you can support it from anything I’ve said.
As for the effect being identical at the end of the first half, that’s bunk. If it had happened at the end of the first half San Diego might have been equally disheartened and given up the score, but they would then have had the entire second half to get mad and get even. But when the final gun sounds it’s too late. Then you have to wait for the next game, at which time 52-21 was arguably “the second half.”

I agree with Whidbey about the Hochuli game
The bad call doesn’t delegitimize the fact that the Broncos led most of that game, and went toe-to-toe with the supposedly almighty Chargers. Just as the Broncos lucked out with the call, the Chargers would have lucked out just as much to win with a ball that slipped out of Cutler’s hand. Add the fact that Cutler won it with a 4th down TD, and a 2-point conversion, and I call it legitimate.

Talent or luck
So this whole thread makes me ask? in a shootout does the most talented team win or the luckiest? Myself I’d say in a shootout Jay Cutler is at his worst. That is when he’ll force balls into triple coverage. He’ll miss the throw to the back of the endzone. Jay IMO does not handle stress well. But then again if he’ll get the calls, he will win!

Your point is a good one
Hochuli’s blown call doesn’t change the fact that Jay made a huge mistake at the worst possible time. If not counting means Jay didn’t buckle under pressure and make that mistake, then the obvious solution is to draft players who are “good” at benefitting from blown calls.

The worse possible time. We could have used a bad call then. Good thing we didn’t draft him!!!
nonsense for nonsense.
by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 12, 2009 3:13 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
The difference
in my opinion, is that Elway generally came through in late game situations. While with cutler, coming through in the clutch has been the exception not the rule.
Regardless of how you feel about the trade, you have to admit that culter’s name doesn’t even enter the discussion of great two-minute QBs right now. He may get much better at it, but so far he hasn’t demonstrated much ability to lift the team on his back and carry them the way other “franchise QBs” have.
I don’t think any rational fan debates whether our former QB is a better QB than our current starter. Although if ytou look simply at 2-minute play, Orton has actually outperformed cutler in the past. NOBODY knows how the two will perform in the future.
by SlowWhiteGuy on Sep 12, 2009 3:41 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
The difference
is the Chargers’ luck was due to a Bronco mistake, while the Broncos’ luck was due to an official’s mistake. To win by the other team’s mistakes is part of the game, and the reason coaches emphasize not making mistakes and value players who don’t make many. But no one wants officials’ mistakes to affect who wins and loses.

Well?
Are you?
by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 12, 2009 1:12 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I probably didn't criticize the regime last year.
I rarely do. That’s how I roll.
But…I can’t abide revisionist history. The fact is, we keep hearing about the loss of Cutler’s proficiency in shoot outs and the deep ball when, in fact, we never had them. They are myths designed to perpetuate the misplaced angst about Kyle Orton.
I think I was more of a fool a year ago than I am today. A year ago, I truly believed that Jay Cutler would finally rise to the opportunity for a shootout rather than fold. I thought he might finally translate a cannon into a deep ball weapon. I was foolish.
Only time will tell how foolish I am this year.
by PredominantlyOrange on Sep 12, 2009 1:30 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
lol I hear you
Don’t you hate looking back a year and wondering how you could be ‘that person’ who thought ‘that way’? Tho my opinions have changed very little of late, I try to keep them fluid.
I DID criticize the team last year but didn’t think our flaws warranted a firing. And I still totally disagree with you. Revisionist history? You’re admittedly practicing it. I still think Cutler was hinting at greatness after only THREE YEARS in the league while you suddenly are of the opinion that he’s less than Orton. (and they just threw in the TWO 1st rounders to be friendly)
Next year I hope my present opinions are completely wrong (though i wish Jay well… screw the Bears). My stance is I hate the firing, the trade and a couple of our draft picks… I feel Orton (if he keeps the starting job at all), is at best a band-aid for the gaping Cutler loss. While he may prove a serviceable QB, his accuracy, indecision, happy feet and lack of a deep ball threat, will affect how teams defend against us and inevitably hurt our team. I have NOT predicted a Broncos/McD failure. I fear it though. I really have no idea how many games we’ll win but I’d be very happy with 8-8 and hope for next year…
Here’s to looking back next year I wondering how I could be SO BITTER AND FOOLISH!! (my self esteem can take the hit)

I have never once said that Kyle Orton is better than Jay Cutler
I’ve said that I’m optimistic that Kyle Orton can be successful.
In fact, of late, I ignore the Cutler issue as much as possible. I just get tired of hearing about the QB he wasn’t. I get tired of hearing about this great offense that failed to rise to the occassion every bit as often as it clicked. Whether it was Cutler’s fault or not, this reinvented Denver offense of 2008 usually hummed early and faded, or failed to hum at all. What that tells me is that as long as the gameplan was solid, Jay Cutler was God. If the game plan was not solid, or if the other team adjusted, Jay Cutler was barely ordinary. Thus, while I will miss the convienience of his enormous promise, I’m pretty sure the sun can still rise over Bronconation whether its Kyle Orton or somebody else at the helm.
I admit I was a huge fan of the real Jay Cutler— at least until he chose the path he chose out of town. This new Jay Cutler? I’ve never seen him play.

Ten wins
Seven to nine wins, about what we had last year, would be a wash and thus inconclusive. Six or fewer wins, especially if the losses could be traced to QB inadequacies, would lead to some soul-searching on my part. How’s that?

sounds about right
I’d have to say 9 wins would define success. It’s about the low end of what I’d expect from this fresh team and a quality QB.
unless he has a Grossman type year… team success while looking like crap. If he looks like crap I’d say 11 wins is still a success… winning is winning.
by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 12, 2009 4:36 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Successful
Most of the time, a loss cannot be traced back to his decision making or inability to execute. I would consider that successful.
I think he has a good head on his shoulders and all the tools for the McD system as I understand it at this point. That’s the basis of my optimism.

Agreed PD, and I would add that for any QB, including KO, success includes this:
A loss cannot be traced back to his decision making or inability to execute, and
A win can be traced back to his decision making and ability to execute.

Shootouts account for three or four games a year
When your defense is a Horrible as ours has been, every game resembles a shootout!! The facts of of Points allowed vs points scored really tell the tale! Give us the average points allowed league-wide last year & refigure our wins and losses!!
BTW I know, the haters will point out next that our offense (or Cutler all by himself) made our defense worse…. Laughable.
by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 12, 2009 10:33 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wasn't talking about the D
But what Sharpe said was that Orton “wouldn’t win many shootouts”. My contention is that there simply aren’t that many “shootouts” to win in the first place.
by AllBroncsallday on Sep 12, 2009 10:40 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
All anyone is asking for is examples of the shoot outs...
The only one I can remember winning is against new Orleans in the last 2 seasons.
I am incorrect there?
A call is a call…..so I count the San Diego game as one we win as well.
But we lost our share too!
I think the over riding point is that people bag on Orton as some one you dont want in a shoot out, but I can only think of 4 shoot outs in the past 2 seasons, which is not many, and it can be argued that by better coaching on both sides of the ball (time management, play calling, scheming) we will not find our selves in shoot outs.
I agree with WB to a point: we were forced into shoot outs the last 2 seasons, but we also threw some games way by our WHOLE offense making some bone head decisions. There is no doubting that. Which makes me wonder why those decisions WERE made when our D sucked. Would we not have been better having larger time of possession to keep our D off the field, the opposition D on the field….got to wonder why we threw so much???

blowouts
WB if Jay was as good in shootouts as people want us to think then those blowouts Denver had should have been shootouts but many times Jay would not make the play that would have kept his team in the game. I think Jay can be a good QB but if I had a lead in the 4th quarter even in a high scoring game I’d rather have Orton as my QB based on how they played last year.

I checked and the Bears with Orton won a 48-41 shootout so I dont know what they are basing the claims off of .
I always wonder why they would mention something so small as that but not that The Bears were the second highest scoring first quarter offense in the league and that Orton had one of the highest 1st quarter QBR as well.
That tells me that Orton is well prepared and watches his film .You add that with a highly detailed game planner and offensive mind in McDaniel and I think we will do very well.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking
Maybe, what, 10 or 12? And how many of those, do you find yourself in?
Out of over 200 games per season, it doesn’t seem like winning shootouts is very high on the list of requirements.

Good Morning NYC,
To me this represents a franchise quaterback more so than throwing the ball hard into tight coverage while maintaining a loosing record. But that’s just me.
His strengths have been managing the game, leading the huddle, overcoming adversity, and winning games. He has a career 21-12 record as a starter.

Was intrigued by Stokley's comment
“some quarterbacks get down and take the whole offense with him.” The specific point of his comment is that Orton isn’t like that. I doubt that Peyton Manning is, either. Hmmmm. Wonder who he might have had in mind?

Your consistency and dedication are impressive, and your posts reall add to my morning Bronco ritual. I love the quote from McDaniels about the coaches knowing best what quality of team the Broncos will field this year. I think it is a nice retort to the MSM talking heads who really have no clue what kind of team the Broncos will be. Go Josh and go Broncos!

+1 Thanks NYC (I'd love to drop in and watch a game with you!!)
Josh certainly must think he knows best. Otherwise he will surely fail. I see things here and there that give me hope (even tho I’m not a McD fan), this is one of them. He has a clear idea of how he wants to (re)build the team and let’s no one sway him from that. Gotta appreciate the balls!
Also I’ve been loving his play calls in pre-season. I look forward to his real game calls & especially the half time adjustment that Shanny used to be known for (not so much the last few years) and NE still is.
I my mind this game could really have a huge impact on our success this year.
Huge.

Thank you NYC, I tend to take Horse Tracks for granted, and this is the first time I’ve posted on one… I’m sure it takes you a fair amount of time to get the links together and organized to make it easy for us to get to everything “Broncos” in the morning, so again, we appreciate it!
Regarding Sharpe and Smith talking to BM:
Is there any other franchise where former players have such dedication to their old team? I can’t think of another instance where retired legends reach out to help the new guys… does this just point to the quality of guys we had during our 2 SB runs? Or is it the culture of the organization that Bowlen has in place coupled with the love we have for the team? Or am I wrong and this happens a lot? Anyways, I just think it’s awesome that those 2 step in and still care about what’s going on with the organization…

I don’t know about his injury status but he’s only 29. I’d have liked to have Seymour and if we’re still the same Broncos, he’d be resigning with us during the season… Of course he’d be aging maybe by the time we start winning….and he’d be expensive.

Long term loss. Because I don’t think we are a team one player away from winning it all i wouldn’t make the move. I also think it was a bad move by Oakland in that regard.

Shannon and Rod as good cop, bad cop
I can just hear that conversation! Sharpe starts, laying into Marshall and telling him he better start manning up and acting like a professional football player. Then Rod quietly encourages that Brandon has too much talent to waste on a bad attitude. Then Sharpe digs in again, telling him his behavior has been flat-out unacceptable and should just let his play speak for him. Then Rod gently suggests that when his suspension is over, the best thing to do is to work hard and earn the roster spot he has, and the rest will fall into place.
I heart our Rod and Shay!
Thanks NYC! GO BRONCOS!

Brand New Season!
Long time reader, Life-Long Fan, 1st Post Ever!
I predict a solid 2nd Place in the Division and a
9-7 Record, but no Playoffs. Tomorrow we will
beat Cincinnati 20-14. As much as I can’t stand
Phillip Rivers and his 8th Grade maturity level, I
believe the Chargers will (barring injury) go to
and win the Super Bowl. As for the Bears (and
no sour grapes here either), they will finish 3rd
in their Division and miss the Playoffs also. And
THAT is how the 2009 Season will end. No Kool-
Aid. Just Reality.

I agree about our division. I think we do better than the experts project, but still end up 2nd in our division (certainly NOT behind oakland and kc that’s for sure). I just think the Chargers know their window is closing and are hungry for it. They look pretty good IMO.

Routine excellence is easy to take for granted
Every morning, rather than going to sites like DP and DB.com, and then scouring the ether for additional scraps, I just go to Horse Tracks. Then, if I happen to have a lot of time on my hands, I might go looking for additional news, but why waste time looking for that one-tenth of one percent of halfway interesting news that you might have overlooked or that might simply not have made the cut? And there are the little, easily overlooked extras, like your value-added comments or the fact that each link opens in a new tab that I can then close without having to wait for the MHR page to reload. So much convenience for ourselves, and I can’t imagine how much time you must spend to make it happen. For all the excellent content that makes the MHR such a compelling resource, it’s this feature, like the morning newspaper on the porch, that makes MHR such an automatic part of my morning routine

Kyle brings up some good points...
But here is where I VERY definitely disagree with him:
1/ You cant look at Shanahan without looking at his staff. They were HOPELESS, bar Dennison and Turner. Has Shanny more runs on the board than McD/ Defintely. But when you look at the staff’s overall, this years staff is SO much better, and I honestly think in about 2-3 years, we will see McDaniels as one of the best in the game.
2/ I think Cutler is no dummy. I also think that he has an over inflated opinion of himself, and that leads to him not wanting to be coached, as is obvious by his lack of progression in the last 2 seasons. He is MAD talented, but is devoid of football smarts. When you look at last years games, Cutler RARELy checks down and always goes for the glory throw. It is so damn irritating. My wish was that Cutler wanted coaching, and he would have learnt so much from McDaniels and McCoy. In the area of smarts and leadership, I will take Kyle Orton every time.
3/ Shanahan was not moving in the right way. Not even clsoe. His wish to keep Slowik as his DC tells me all I need to know about Kike’s decisions in the past 5 seasons.
4/ I am not seeing the down grade on offense. With the addition of KM, Gaffney, Lloyd and the continuing development of Royal and Hillis I am not seeing what Kyle is seeing. The offense was not all Jay Cutler last year, and I will argue that Royal, Stokely. Marshall and Sheffler made Jay look a lot better than what he really was. Orton is a down grade physically, but thats not everything in a QB.
Thanks fro the link Whidbey. Broncotalk is a cool site.
Peace.

I didn't expect you to agree ... I do though on 99% of his points.
Slowik. Yikes.
I think maybe Shanny was guilty of hamstringing his assistants the last few years though…
1. We’ll see. I hope to eat crow too. McD certainly has potential. If so, I hope he gets the time he needs… if we don’t get some early wins this year, I fear he won’t. (I also hope that if he does fail, it happens QUICKLY. no drawn out, painful, wasted years!)
2. You know how I feel about JC
3. Totally disagree, except for the coordinators bit (granted, very important) I really doubt our pick-ups this year and next equal the talent Shanny most recently brought us. Again, I hope to be wrong.
4. I really have no faith in Orton except that McD may be able to use him well. A SERIOUS SERIOUS downgrade here. Of course our excellent WR’s and TE’s made Cut better. He made them better too. Trust me, none of them will have stats the equal of last year’s. On the flip-side, trust me also when I predict that the Bears WR/TE’s will experience noticeably better stats! Especially when you consider that Cut will both benefit from the Bears running game and improve it simultaneously.
Can’t wait for the game!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 12, 2009 11:52 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
And i think that is the biggest thing we disagree with WB....
I do have faith in Orton. Is he as physically talented as Cutler? No.
But is he as physically talented as Matt Cassell? i would say yes. There is maybe 1 or 2 QB’s equal with JC’s talent, but talent will only get you so far.
I think Orton has enough gifts to be a VERY good QB…especially in this scheme. I think Marshall will get about 80 catches this year, Royal over a 100 and receptions as a whole will not be much less than last year, except with less attempts as we will have a markedly better running game.
I consider QB’s like any other product. They are not just good and bad….some are great, some are good, some are average, some are poor.
I think that Orton can be very good. Cutler could have been GREAT in this system, but lets make no illusions here, Cutler wanted out of Denver, and his was his and his alones doing…which is a damn shame, but which also changed many opinions of his personality here and throught out the NFL.
Cant wait for the game either my friend.
Have a great one!!!

I think the big difference
will not necessarily be a lot fewer throws but a different distribution, with passes to the running backs cutting into the stats of all the wide receibvers.

by spock on Sep 12, 2009 3:27 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Besides from the obvious passing yardage and physical abilities
How is Orton a serious ,serious downgrade .
Jay threw 25 td passes and Orton threw 18
We averaged 24 ppg so I dont know where this downgrade is going to come from as the offense will be deeper and and more balanced.
So what if Brandon and Eddie dont have better numbers if our offense is more efficient and puts up the same or more points than last year Ill take it .
Is he going to make that Bears O-line better ? Cutler gets way too much credit and thats why Im glad the games are starting because it will be interesting to see where the blame gets placed .
by Hoopforia on Sep 12, 2009 12:42 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
seriously?
You throw out QB stats where it suits you and then use team stats to support the individual comparison. I would suggest the run game of Orton’s vs that of Cuts should come into play here as well as the play calling that had defenses KNOWING we were throwing.
I don’t care if our WR’s have worse stats, I HOPE we run MUCH more… I was making a point.
And YES, I certainly do think JC makes the Bears line better! He moves in the pocket very well, releases the ball considerably quicker and forces defenses to respect the deep pass, thereby causing (at times) them to hold possible blitzers back in coverage.
Orton may prove a serviceable QB in McD’s system but in my opinion he’s still a serious, serious downgrade. (Thus the two 1st rounders included in the trade)

Not Bad At All
I thought Kyle’s dissertation reasonable even if I disagree with some of his conclusions. He also did not need to include such terms as “McKid” and “Hatoradors”. He supported his opinions with facts but in the end the piece is primarily opinion.
He starts with his assertion that (1) firing Shanahan, and (2) trading Cutler was the worst things that ever happened to the Broncos. All of his conclusions are built on those premises. He dismisses Bowlen’s response as overreacting to a couple of missed phone calls. OK. I get it. If you have a disgrunted employee who slams you in the media, won’t return your phone calls, demands a trade, won’t show up for training camps, etc., then the only logical response is to hold his feet to the fire and force him to stay on the team because he has skills.
I share Kyle’s concern about using more power blocking offensive schemes instead of the ZB. We saw troubles in the preseason executing these schemes. Time will tell.
