According to Chris Mortensen, Shanny would have cut Brandon Marshall
On Sunday NFL Countdown, Chris Mortensen just reported that Mike Shanahan would have cut Brandon Marshall following the 2008 season, had he not himself been fired. I'm not sure I believe that myself, but it certainly is an interesting peek into the state of the Broncos' locker room last season. Mortensen said that Shanny believed Marshall cost the team more games than he helped them win in 2008. Well, no matter what Marshall does today in Cincinnati, this figures to be a story that will not go away...

Yeah, heard this.
Ironically, right before Florio said that hiring McDaniels had set the Broncos back “fifteen years.”
Question: what would cutting Brandon Marshall, and receiving no return compensation, have done to the Broncos.
Oh, that’s right. We still would have had Cutler, and would have been just one player away …

Exactly
Forget Patriots West, how about North Dallas?

If Schefter told me I was Russian...
I’d believe it. Morty? Ehhhh. He’s good but I want to know his sources. That’s a pretty good asessment of Marshall but did Shanny really say that? You don’t cut a guy like Bmarsh before you try to coach him up. He’s a PITA but he’s got too much talent not to try. Just one man’s opinion.

I voted yes but...
I believe that Shanny did say this to Mort. What I don’t believe is that he would’ve actually gone through with it.

Shanahan is just trying to add fuel to the story….no way he would have done it.

Think trade...
Straight after the season BM had great value!
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????

No way...
Shanahan made a lot poor personel moves, but it makes no sense to cut a guy for who you could actually get something for in a trade. I know the injury and off the field stuff would have made it hard to get full value, but something is better than nothing. I just don’t buy it.

According to Chris Mortensen,
Shanahan is the head coach of the Chiefs.

EXACTLY!
Does ESPN really pay Mortensen? Do they give this clown paychecks?
I think he’s grasping at straws and jealous of Shefter.

He probably said it
but he wouldn’t have actually done it. More likely he would have looked for a Portis-for-Bailey-type trade.

That is just silly . . .
Mortensen would have been better off not saying a word, IMO. I don’t know why his credibility wouldn’t be shot to hell after that . . .

Although...
…I think that Chris Mortensen’s info is usually reliable, I also think that this report doesn’t sound quite right. However, let’s assume that the report is true, then shouldn’t it also be at least wondered if Mike Shanahan is now using Brandon Marshall’s unpopularity in Denver to be the scapegoat for the Broncos monumental melt-down last year?
Did you see Mike say that he would have fired himself for not being able to get his team to win just one friggin’ game, especially the last game? It was that last game, was it not, where the Broncos had to absolutely beat the Chargers to take the division and advance to the playoffs, when we all saw precisely how poorly the Broncos were really coached, by getting their butts handed to them with a 52 to 21 loss, did we not?
Firing Brandon Marshall for last season’s debacle, when there were 52 other players on the team, makes about as much sense as firing John Elway for personally losing those three Super Bowls. So something about Mortensen’s report just doesn’t look right. I would like to think that Mike Shanahan is the type of head coach who takes full-responsibility for “his” losses, also.
