Anyone missing Jeremy Bates?
Hi Guys,
Just a quick post to illicit some discussion.
As well as bleeding orange and blue, on Saturdays, I bleed the red and gold of USC.
So, you can imagine my dismay when Denver got rid of Jeremy Bates as OC (Thank God!) only to find out he has gone to USC as QB Coach/ OC.
Now, along with Shanny, I apportion a lot of the blame for the lack of progression and accountability of Jay Cutler to him. His play calling last year was embarrassing bad, but the thing that was even worse, was his lack of ability to be able to adjust. After week 3, the whole NFL was onto what the Broncos were doing, yet there was no change in the overall philosophy of the team, and lack of half time adjustments to help the team win (see Oakland game at home).
With Bates move to USC, I was hoping he would turn over a new leaf, bring something different to the table. Boy, was I wrong!
Watching the Trojans last night was like watching a watered down version of the 2008 Broncos. Ineffective running game, toss plays, bubble screens, telegraphed play calling and the QB throwing into double coverage.
I found myself screaming at the TV.....wow, groundhog day!!!
So my question is: Do you think that Jay Cutler's development and ownership of his own performance been hampered by ineffectual coaching of Shanny, and in particular, Jeremy Bates?
After watching last night, I saw precisely the same tendencies in the USC team as I saw in the Bronco's team last year.
The only saving grace: USC got the 2 point conversion on a bubble screen! LMAO.
Thoughts?

who won the game last night?
I didn’t watch the USC-Ohio St game
Verbose in style, dispersion of thought, procrastination in life.
USC...18-15..
Freshman QB led a 90 yard drive. Joe McKnight stpped up…..USC D kept them in game. Terrelle Pryor was ordinary…….and the USC offense is the worst it has been in 10 years….horrendous!

All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????

Here's the thing about the game last night....
USC did a very mediocre job all night. Aside from the pick that almost turned into a pick 6, they really didn’t do a whole lot. Yes, Matt Barkley had composure when he needed to and helped get the Trojans down the field when the game was on the line, however, Joe McKnight carried the Trojans on that drive, not Barkley.
I like Barkley, and I hope he does well at my favorite school, but Pete Carroll needs to know that Jeremy Bates breeds careless gunslingers. if Matt Barkley wants to up his game to the next level, Bates isn’t the guy that’s gonna get him there.
That’s how I feel. Also, USC’s offense was successful primarily for their vet O line and good receivers. Their run game was virtually zero last night, I hope that changes.

Boydy,
Remember the first three games last year when the MSM mentioned Bates in the same breath as Josh McDaniels and Jason Garrett—young hot-shot Offensive coordinators who would take the league by storm? Crazy to see how it turned out. I liked Bates at first, but as the season wore on I grew very tired of his inability to adjust the game plan or do anything new throughout the 60 minutes. I quickly realized he was running a video game offense, and what’s more, Cutler hadn’t learned a thing under his tutelage. I wish any former Bronco the best, but I am glad Bates isn’t calling the Offense anymore.
Yeah Bowma....the similarities last night were downright scary....looks like I will be yelling at my TV on Saturdays instead of Sundays now!!!

Lol - I made the comment that USC's offense looked like the Broncos
without realizing Bates was there. Their obsession with screen plays and “backward” passes are what prompted my comment. I kept saying “why the hell don’t their plays go north-south instead of east-west ? They should be killing us.”
As a Buckeyes fan, I was loving it as it kept our substandard offense in the game. At least we didn’t need a pregnancy test after the game, unlike last year. Props to USC’s D – they won that game. And the QB is another Carroll find – if Chow was still there, he would have put up 2-3 touchdowns.

I saw EXACTLY the same thing.
My best friend is a huge Trojan fan, and I watched the game with him last night. I kept telling him that Bates would fail to adjust, and that the running game would be taken away. I hate that I was right. I would not mind having Barkley on the Broncos in a few years, but, as I was reminded earlier by an MHR poster, Bates will likely ruin him. Sad.

Good post, Boydy.
I can’t imagine how Pete Carroll is allowing Bates to do the same thing with his team that he did with the Broncos. Didn’t he watch any film of the last 3 games of 2008?
Cutler should have made great strides in his development as a QB last year – his 3rd year. He was pretty familiar with the league and aware of how his skillset worked at the NFL level. Bates should have honed that raw talent into one of the best QBs in the game. Sorry, guys. You know all of this. I just needed to vent a little.
In the summer of 1984, Shanahan pulled on his sneakers and ran patterns for Elway. He helped him move into a great level of comfort – and we saw the improvement in ’84.
Boydy, this suggestion might not be very palatable, but it might keep your blood pressure lower: Tape the game. Find the final score. Then watch it. You might enjoy it more. I used to do that to prevent my hyperventilating.
Thanks for sharing.
