The Bengals hurt themselves by not putting any safeties back, and we took advantage.

If they want to help us win, then why should we not try to take advantage?

See above.

I was away all weekend, and got home just in time to see the last five minutes – and was pretty sure we were going to lose after watching our D fall apart on the final Bengal drive.

And then, as if by divine intervention, an otherwise incomplete pass was tipped ever so slightly to the right – and the circle was completed.

Good coaching notes: Though it’s probably been mentioned in the game thread, I love the way Stokley knocked a couple more seconds off the clock before running it in for the win. That’s heads-up ball right there.

Again, awesome cap to a great weekend. GO BRONCOS!

Yep....and that is the only time the D played bad....apart from that....DOMINANT!!!

Stoked about the D…holding the Bengals O to 7 points.
The offense….OY VEY……and I wont pin it all on Orton, apart from taking that bonehead sack….Marshall drops, Sheffler drops, Stokley drops…..
The D deserved that win…..thats called karma.
We are 1-0 fellas and girls….YES!

I still can't believe that happened.

They don’t write movies with that kind of ending cause no one would believe it.

I mean seriously, a last second touchdown followed by an int by the TE? Really?

We should give Cinci some credit

They were #12 on defense last year and got better, and they got their star QB back. We just beat a good team on the road by hanging in there and finding a way to win. How novel.

Defens only a B+?

They came within 38 seconds of pitching a shut out in their first game against what is supposed to be a dominating offense.

They will do nothing but get even better.. This is the defnese that everyon says wont beable to play thsi system for a year or two. How about Phonze and Haggen and Fields and Bdawk all over the field? Fantastic effor t for a first ever game for th estaff and with a roster that is more than half new additions form last year.

The offense will come. Conventional wisdom at this time of the year has always been that defense will be ahead of the offense, all things being equal. Theh punting today by Kern was okay on the lat few but stunk early. Coverage was real decent and kickoffs and field goals were great.

Defense, expecially given how long they were on the field, was fantastic. A

by phondonkey on Sep 13, 2009 2:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Without those drops the offense looks a lot better

But lots of room for improvement.

On the plus side, Orton can throw the ball downfield.

The question is, can Marshall catch it.

Highlight reel for the ages!

1) Everyone wanted Orton’s head, and I’ll agree that he wasn’t great. But there where also a lot of dropped passes that weren’t his fault.

2) Hate on McDaniels all you want, but the defense is massively improved (and without spending the top pick on a DT). STs coverage is also much better.

3) As a DC, I always preached to “bat down the ball” instead of tipping or going for the INT, especialy near the end of a “won” game. I’m proud of the Broncos, but the Cincy defense screwed up that last play.

4) Stokley’s still got it.

5) Clearly a 5-2, not a 3-4.

6) We’ll hear all kinds of excuses from the “fans” who are so down on Denver. I’m sure many of them gave up on the team and turned of their TVs when Cincy scored neared the end. It isn’t over until it is over. When I lost the feed (Cincy about to score), I raced to get it back. I felt the game wasn’t over, and somehow I was right.

7) Denver needs to clean up a few things, but they looked better than I expected.

8) Several new players looked great (Dawkins, Alphonso Smith, Haggen, etc).

9) Was glad to see the ZB is still being used, though the running game itself didn’t look terribly hot.

10) Denver’s conditioning (and smaller size) paid off over the course of the game against a bigger team on the other team’s field. The humidity and heat affected Cincy much more (I noted their guys breathing hard).

I got called into work for a couple of hours, and missed the first half. I’m glad I caught the second.

Its a win! Woo-hoo!

Mixed Feelings

A win is a win!

Positives:

  • Great teamwork
  • Outstanding defense through 3 quarters
  • Alphonso Smith
  • Daniel Graham
  • Reid, Haggan, etc.
  • Who said Orton can’t throw the long ball?

Negatives:

  • Coaching – (1) the last play of the 1st half – they should not have called a running play because if it did not result in a touchdown the clock would have run out, (2) the defense changing from an attacking 5-2 to a zone 4-3 in the 4th quarter.
  • OLine – did not perform well on man blocking schemes, 3 penalties on Hamilton, Clady was not dominating as last year – too many sacks of Orton.
  • Doom – He was not getting by Whitworth
  • Dropped balls – way too many of them when the balls were perfectly thrown.
  • Orton not throwing the ball away in the 4th quarter sack play

Grades:
Offense – C+
Defense – A-
Special Teams – B
Coaching – C

i think

offense: D—penalties & three-and-outs
Defense: B+—they played great but were inconsistent with pressure.
Special Teams: same
Coaching: B cause of Nolan

milehigh

Offense – I could see a D
Defense – I gotta give them an A- They kept Cincy shut out through almost the entire game. I don’t care about between the 20’s.
Special Teams – The shanked punts bothered me.
Coaching – Nolan = B-; McD = D+ (average C)

by Endzone on Sep 13, 2009 2:34 PM MDT up reply actions

Defense an A

Given how many plays they had to defend and how long they were on the field, they were supurb.

by phondonkey on Sep 13, 2009 2:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed

Except for the last part of the 4th quarter when Nolan switched to a zone 4-3. That made no sense to me. I’ll stick with A-.

by Endzone on Sep 13, 2009 2:46 PM MDT up reply actions

I think the sacks were due to Orton not getting rid of the ball

which may have been caused by good coverage by Cincy’s D.

Agreed tho I'd include Dawkins on the +s and Moreno on the -s

The first two runs on the last drive of the first half really pissed me off. …and the prevent at the end. Particularly against a team with so many WRs and Palmer… ??

I absolutely LOVED the defense but do remember how many dropped balls Cincy had that would have kept drives alive.

+1 for zero turnovers!!!!

I’ll give KO a pass on getting rid of that ball in FG range, it happened FAST. More than that, we were hurt by the penalties on that drive.

First game jitters on our Head Coach & OC?? I’ll give the youngster that one too I guess.

I tell you what. I enjoyed the ENTIRE GAME!! So Good To be watching the Broncos again!!!

Gotta love Stokes!!! Go Broncs!!

BTW I’m pretty worried about Moreno’s toughness. Love the Phonz tho!! Saw Ayers in the mix a few times too.

WHOLE WEEK JUST MADE BY ONE PLAY

Oh and just because I want to share. My favorite “stupid announcer quote” of the day: “The Broncos didn’t get any pressure because they stopped blitzing.” Blitz = more than 5 rushers so the Broncos ran 2 (yes 2 and I DO watch that) blitzes the whole game. Lots of Zone Blitzes (not a true blitz, just an odd player rushing). And the Broncs on the last drive went to a Prevent Wins Defense with a 3 man rush. BIG MISTAKE.

I cannot stand the crap that passes for commentating on NFL games now. Lots of tier 3 and 4 teams are better than the top teams. The team that did the Broncs was watching a game that was going on in their head instead of on the field.

2nd favorite, “The Cincinati offensive line is so much bigger than the Broncos Defensive line that they are just pushing them around” Next play DOOM throws the “Very large, very strong” excuse for a LT that Cincy ran out to the ground and hits the Cincy RB for a 4 yard loss…

Orton was horrible

The receivers were horrible.

It’s obvious we’re still fighting throught the learning curve of this new system.

Hopefully, we can continue to steal wins with our defense until we can get Orton healthy and get this sytem down.

by Broncos_FTW on Sep 13, 2009 2:36 PM MDT reply actions

I don't think Orton was horrible.

He made one bad play taking a sack. Other than that, we saw lots of drops (or, in one case, a deep ball go right through Marshall’s hands without his touching it).

by JeffG on Sep 13, 2009 3:15 PM MDT up reply actions

honestly, there wasn't much he could do on that sack.

If he throws it away, it’s intentional grounding.

Bringing Bronco love from 1,112 miles away

by Troy Hufford on Sep 13, 2009 3:19 PM MDT up reply actions

Not Really

He could have thrown it in the direction of a receiver and it would not have been intentional grounding. McD chewed Orton out on the sidelines after that play. I could clearly make out him saying that Orton should have thrown the ball away.

by Endzone on Sep 13, 2009 3:23 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes, it was a bad play

but those things are misleading, too. Let’s say all of a sudden he sees a bunch of Cinci players all around him, tries to throw the ball away and it gets popped up and intercepted. And then we all say, Idiot! He should have just held on to the ball and took the sack! Whatever his limitations, and no one is saying he doesn’t have any, Orton plays within them. Sometimes the best play you can make is the apparently stupid one that pisses everybody off. I don’t mean you, Endzone. I mean some of these other negative Nellies who think a glass that’s almost overflowing isn’t as full as it could have been.

Orton

threw behind receivers, ignored wide open receivers, underthrew receivers (one of which led to the game winning tip) and led receivers into vicious hits, and he still has way too happy feet.

If he continues not to throw ints then we will stay in games regardless, with the defense we had today.

by Broncos_FTW on Sep 13, 2009 3:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Not so sure about the happy feet

But my feed was bad, the NFL Game pass as usual completely screwed up and then became unavailable. For the money you pay for this stuff – and to have the first game of the season just – poof – gone, makes me sick, then pissed off.

I am not so sure he could have done anything but take the sack from what I saw – there was someone coming right up the middle, as well as pressure to the sides. But I thought I saw some locking on to targets instead of looking off, and some balls thrown behind receivers or thrown to receivers so that they would get creamed after the catch. Some of his passes looked great, though. Lot of good and bad.

He is tough and respected.
Anyone ever had a knuckle dislocation? I have….they make your hand basically dead and slwo to react.
Anyone had a fracture break thru the skin? From what I am led to believe, hurt like crap.
Orton played with BOTH.
Marshall dropped a 16 yard pass, a 18 yard pass, STokley drops a 11 yard pass, Sheffler drops a 20 yard pass…..he gets a pass called back for a hold……..65 yards…probably more…by easy drops and penalty by our O line.
The sack was a bonehead play, but Orton was SAFE with the ball and we had no turnovers….and he will only get better.

I'm not closing the book on Orton.

Just thinking it’s not a bad idea to play any of our three great options to allow for some healing time, contrast-and-compare, friendly competition, etc. Obviously, you can’t be trading them in and out willy-nilly during the game, and Orton’s gotta be classified as the starter unless something goes horribly wrong, but that’s my take.

(In fairness, I was only able to watch the last five awesome minutes of this game. But the comments on here regarding KO have not sounded overwhelmingly positive, so I can only judge by that.)

by Duncan1800 on Sep 13, 2009 2:57 PM MDT up reply actions

And let's not forget...

It was a succession of bonehead penalties at the end of a pretty solid drive that put Orton in that position.

I'm just saying that Orton is not our future--and never will be

We may have had some dropped passes

but what I saw is a QB that is not able, for whatever reason, to look over the field in ‘real time’

and when time runs out….unable to move in the right direction…not to mention easily tripped up.

We either go with Simms, or throw Tom B. out there and let him learn under fire.

Orton is definitely not an answer.

Actually, Cinci outplayed us much of the game

particularly in the first half, yet Denver led 3-0. This time it was the other team that moved the ball between the 20s. This time it was Denver that kept finding ways to score when they weren’t (mostly) moving. Finally, both teams made mistakes, but Cinci made the last one. None of this has been characteristic of the Broncos the last several years. I’m hoping we finally have a team that keeps finding ways to win unimpressively.

download some kind of screen capturing software (screenflow for mac works well) and record your screen as you watch the games, then burn the videos you record to DVD so you can have them when you don’t have internet.

I’m gonna make a bunch of videos this year.

by broncosfaninphilly on Sep 13, 2009 2:48 PM MDT reply actions

Orton's play

Orton did ok. He did throw a few bad ones, and took that sack to take us out of field goal position. The receivers have to catch the ball and the offensive line has to stop holding and committing false starts at the worst possible time. We had incredible momentum going in the fourth quarter until the penalties and sack took us out of field goal range.

the Media

will surely say it was all luck and we shouldn’t be happy about this…but be happy! BEFORE the game, the media was talking about how we would be beaten (4 point underdogs) because Cincinnati has healthy Palmer back looking good with three great receivers plus depth, and they’ve all been extolling their running game (although I will admit I don’t think Benson is good at all, there is no question their line is hard and pyhiscal). Our D held up all game, the only time they really let us down was when (IMO) the play-calling got crappy and we played back instead of aggressive.

No such thing as luck in the NFL…they played solid football today. Orton looked far better than people will give him credit for… the WR’s dropped numerous passes, and the O-line shit the bed today, and he still came up with a 100.7 passer rating..

Re-post: Great WIN!

Few points:

1) Tony Dungy once said there’s no such thing as a lucky win in the NFL, you win by playing the game 60 minutes and giving the guys around you an opportunity to win it.
2) Denver D played an INCREDIBLE game against an extremely potent offense, and a phenomenal QB.
3) Kyle Orton played a TREMENDOUS game. Not perfect, but he was under pressure ALL DAY (Cin’s D looked strong – much stronger than MSM gives credit for). The play where Orton scrambled out of the pocket and found D. Graham is why he is a winner.
4) The O-Line that everyone thought was the most solid part of the team looked like a group of rookies, especially when it counted the most in the 4Q.
5) I want Knowshon to be great, but this was his ‘Welcome to the NFL’ game – he was irrelevant today.

by SteveAssassin on Sep 13, 2009 2:52 PM MDT reply actions

Orton

threw behind receivers, ignored wide open receivers, underthrew receivers (one of which led to the game winning tip) and led receivers into vicious hits, and he still has way too happy feet.

If he continues not to throw ints then we will stay in games regardless, with the defense we had today.

by Broncos_FTW on Sep 13, 2009 2:56 PM MDT up reply actions

lol please who are you the receivers mamma

Football is a physical game and going over the middle takes balls hes not setting them up for vicious hits but youve got to exp[ect those hits when you are running into holes in the zones. You are gonna be running away from one defender into another one .

Is anyone giving him credit for playing with 15 stitches on his right index finger and going 17 of 28? I hope so. He had some bad moments and needs to improve, but let’s give the guy his due. One thing I won't knock Orton on....

is attitude. He’s said the right things since he got here (and before, from what I’ve seen) and that’s a change from what we had in Jay. I’m worried, sure, given where the offense seems to be, but I’m good with Cutler being gone even if it hurts in the W column – I can’t believe Cutler will lead a championship squad anytime soon with his petulant, spoiled BMOC attitude.

The Cutler comparisons

are killing me. You can’t say what Cutler would have done. You don’t know. All you can do is pull up that idealized memory of Cutler in your brain and extrapolate from there that he would have done this or that. Tell me, which Cutler would have shown up?

Orton would have been about 21/28 without the dropped passes. He threw downfield. There weren’t many throws into tight coverage (a few).

Remember that Ayers and Moreno haven’t really shown up yet. The question is not what Cutler would have done, but is the team better than it was with him. I say yes.

Wherever you go, there you are.

never completed a pass that long. The one-who-will-not-be-named exceeded that only once, when he hit Royal with a 93-yarder last year.

Griese hit Byron Chaimberlain with an 88 yarder in 1999.
Craig Morton threw a 95 yarder to Steve Watson in 1981.

At 87 yards, that’s a tie for the 8th longest reception in Broncos history.

And I thought my Rams were lucky yesterday? Wow. Defense looks good. Offense looks putrid. Too bad we can’t play Cincy every week.

The Bengals were 12th in defense last year

…and they added Rey Rey.

Why would you want to play them every week — particularly when they have a franchise QB and great receivers?

Oh. And for the record, Franchise QB 7, weak-armed loser slug, 12.

by JeffG on Sep 13, 2009 3:30 PM MDT up reply actions

Where to start

I’d like to play the Bengals every week because, like losers do, they found a way to lose. And weak armed loser slug accounted for two long field goals and a loser assisted miracle. Take away said miracle, weak armed loser slug played like weak armed loser slug, no?

I was happy with the miracle. But am still extremely disappointed in everything I’ve seen from our offense under McD so far.

Some of you would be disappointed if we went 16-0

if we didn’t blow everybody out.

Mostly agree with bob, Bengals found a way to lose.

Defense did play well but Orton seemed out of synch with his receivers. Some passes had bad placement but other should have been caught. I think Orton shouldn’t have thrown toward Marshall as often as he did.

Joe Sakic. Captain forever.

"Bengals found a way to lose"

And we let them. Last year we would have “won” the give-away battle. Good teams don’t beat themselves. They win by making fewer mistakes or the next-to-last mistake. They let the other team beat itself.

Winning isn't important.

All that matter is the respect of Jamie Dukes.

And fantasy stats.

Of course, Orton’s look good for today — which says something about how important fantasy stats are.

lol, the respect of jamie dukes

I just about choked on my water because of that comment. Thanks for the laugh…………and almost dying.

take away a drive against the prevent

and the franchise QB and his big 3 receivers get shut out, and the weak-armed slug loser gets the win.

Wow. I guess we can play this all day, huh?

Huh?

He was all over the field.

Did he get beat deep and I missed it?

by JeffG on Sep 13, 2009 3:31 PM MDT up reply actions

no

I think he was looking at 85’s stats. champ only allowed him to catch it twice on him & ocho was getting frustrated.

Chad was lining up on the left

a lot, on the side away from Champ. Can’t imagine why.

Champ was excellent

still cheating in on the run too…

by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 13, 2009 3:34 PM MDT up reply actions

I am really interested in this

Is champ unsung because he’s doing quiet things to shut down his side of the field? Or is he not doing anything? Has he lost a step, or is he just doing what he does, so he keeps the big plays away from him?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Champ played an awesome pro-bowl level game today. I don’t know what you were looking at. Champ was great! Much better than in preseason.

Return of the Orange Crush?

The D performed exceptionally well today. Is this the return of the Orange Crush?

For me, the Orange Crush was all about the linebackers. This D looks like the DLine is dominating. They stopped the run when it counted, pressured the QB, and in general did everything I would want them to do (until they switched to a 4-3).

they still need to improve on the 3rd and long situations..

they kept going into that stupid zone coverage on 3rd an longs a gave up more conversions …..

Between the 20's

I don’t care as much what they do between the 20’s if they deny them a touchdown. But you are right. They gave up far too many 3rd & longs.I think that will improve as the secondary gets more comfortable handing off assignments. I saw Champ and BDawk miss a few communications.

by Endzone on Sep 13, 2009 4:12 PM MDT up reply actions

When i said that champ lost a step. I meant he lost a step when he was arguable the greatest shutdown corner in NFL History.

B/C didnt he allow like 1 CATCH in the whole season about 3 years ago i think. SO he is still a top 5 corner, but it is no doubtably clear he HAS lost a step from his shutdown all day all game evry minute days.

by Calibroncoboy on Sep 13, 2009 3:54 PM MDT reply actions

Win is win

gotta say d looked great. Offense looked out of sync. Orton needs to get better by week three cause otherwise they need to start brandstater at least he can throw the ball.

Go Broncos!!! From Australia

I set my alarm clock for 3 AM and struggled to sleep. As I sat there watching my live stream get pulled I frantically searched for another. I watched the sunrise thinking that after a long oddseason we will pull out win, even if it had no TD’s…I didn’t care! Then it happened, the Bengals marched down the field and scored. By this stage I could only watch the updates on NFL.com, as the disgust began to turn to hatred I sat there waiting for an update knowing full well the next screen update would say FINAL Ben 7 Broncos 6. So I called up MHR to read what McG, Endzone. Zappa, Californiajoe and all the boys had too say. I thought I would take another look at NFL.com and there it was 12 – 6. PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS THE POTATOES!!!!!!
It’s gunna be a GREAT day in the Land of OZ…….GO BIG D!!!!

Prater, stoke and the whole D were the MVP's

but we are only going to win 2 more games the rest of the year so that sucks for us(according to Clayton)=)

I'll take it :)

A win is a win. We should of had this one. When the schedule came out it seemed easy, as the preseason went on it started to look not as sure. But yeah a win is a win :) we got it!

by Theo Zissou on Sep 13, 2009 4:44 PM MDT reply actions

The only thing worse than an ugly win is...

a pretty loss. ALL NFL teams are hard to beat, especially at home so we should be appreciative of the things that went well today.

BTW, sure hope to see TB v.2 getting some snaps soon.

I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

When was the last time we could say the defense won a game ???

Right on Downunder

It’s gonna be a meat and potatoes season, and the MSM for dessert. For some reason I can never get the Broncos on TV here (maybe it’s I live out in the desert mountains), but this was on CBS and YAHOOOO! So usually I just have to rely on updates too. But man o man, what a sweet ending I got to see. Hope you can see more our team way over under down there.
