Denver Wins! 10 Quick Thoughts...

I'll write a longer story when I have time, but I'm a little excited and wanted to write a few quick words.

1) Everyone wanted Orton's head, and I'll agree that he wasn't great.  But there where also a lot of dropped passes that weren't his fault.

2) Hate on McDaniels all you want, but the defense is massively improved (and without spending the top pick on a DT).  STs coverage is also much better.

3) As a DC, I always preached to "bat down the ball" instead of tipping or going for the INT, especialy near the end of a "won" game.  I'm proud of the Broncos, but the Cincy defense screwed up that last play.

4) Stokley's still got it.

5) Clearly a 5-2, not a 3-4.

6) We'll hear all kinds of excuses from the "fans" who are so down on Denver.  I'm sure many of them gave up on the team and turned of their TVs when Cincy scored neared the end.  It isn't over until it is over.  When I lost the feed (Cincy about to score), I raced to get it back.  I felt the game wasn't over, and somehow I was right.

7) Denver needs to clean up a few things, but they looked better than I expected.

8) Several new players looked great (Dawkins, Alphonso Smith, Haggen, etc).

9) Was glad to see the ZB is still being used, though the running game itself didn't look terribly hot.

10) Denver's conditioning (and smaller size) paid off over the course of the game against a bigger team on the other team's field.  The humidity and heat affected Cincy much more (I noted their guys breathing hard).

I got called into work for a couple of hours, and missed the first half.  I'm glad I caught the second.

Its a win!  Woo-hoo!

Sloppy play, but I'll take the results

I’d rather see Marshall being used as a decoy, allowing the RBs and other WRs to make plays. He needs to develop some chemistry with KO. The offense as a whole has a ways to go, but the defense and special teams were just awesome today. We owe them this W!

Otherwise, one hail mary only.

by robswenson on Sep 13, 2009 2:29 PM MDT reply actions

Yes as soon as I saw him with the refs, I looked at the clock…it was down from 0:42 to 0:20 and I knew that had to be way off. All that had occurred was 1 run play by Benson for the TD. How could that have taken 0:22 off the clock?

So to put it back finally to 0:38 was a huge heads up play by the young HC. I tip may hat to him.

by Horsepower on Sep 13, 2009 2:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Not to take away from McD, 'cause I support the guy...

…but the heads up likely goes to an assistant that was charged with watching the clock (or even a deep string player).

Just saying.

Yes, but...

if you put it all in proper perspective, he is only 33 and this was his debut as a rookie Head Coach in the NFL. He did his job.

by Horsepower on Sep 13, 2009 4:02 PM MDT up reply actions

My guess is that...

…the HC did his job, and assigned someone (before the game) to be the “timekeeper”. It is almost always a player on the bench or an assistant. Nothing for or against the coach. It is what every team does.

However how often have we seen horrible time management from coaches during games. Give the coaches credit for being on the ball, whoever they were.

Kyle Orton

I tip my hat to him. Although he made less than great decisions, he kept fighting. I think that over time, he will learn the system and manage the game well for us.

If I think about it, he had to deal with the following:
1. The heat
2. Playing in an away game
3. Still learning this very complicated offense and answering to McD every time he gets off the field
4. Ignoring the pain on the index finger of his throwing hand

What tremendous heart and desire. No, he is no Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, or John Elway, but I still like this guy. I wish him much success in meeting his potential.

Timing off

I noticed on a lot of the drops the receivers looked surprised that the ball was there. So the O really needs to work on its timing.

by Muse_Cubed on Sep 13, 2009 3:22 PM MDT up reply actions

Good point.

Now that you mention it, there were several throws (by both QBs) that hit the target right as the receivers were turning for the catch. Still, there were an awful lot of dropped passes all over the place. First game jitters?

KO

It’s very easy to be critical of him right at the moment. I believe he had the toughest job to do in the entire NFL on this week 1 game, for the reasons I listed above. He may be a veteran, but that offense is difficult to learn to say the least. Let’s give him ’till mid-season to show that he is improving.

Yes he looked bad on some plays, but the thing that will save him, is if he learns how to throw the ball away. I trust he won’t be making too many of those mistakes in the future, as it almost cost our team today. Not to mention how McD seemed to feel about it right after the play (=

Can you play at the NFL level?

Why don’t you go through mini-camps, training camp, pre-season, and finally suit up for a week 1 regular season game at the NFL level and go out there to play for the Denver Broncos.

It’s easy to judge sitting on the couch eating your tortilla chips, dipped in salsa and act like you know how to play in this New England offense. It’s an entirely different matter to study film, the play “library,” and go out on the field and execute…execute in an away game at the NFL level.

Do you honestly believe that you could play better? I think not.

Interesting unintentional point
He pretty proved himself to be the same Kyle Orton I’ve always seen.

You know, that’s really true. All of his career, Orton has infuriated fans as well as exciting them (yes, he does) but in the end, he always seems to bring home victories. There’s something about that – winners win, as JohnB likes to say. I don’t know why that’s true, but it has been since high school for Orton.

I'll Give credit to Orton for his gutty performance.

Still, he’s got a ways to go. All too often, he locked on to the primary receiver. Over time, he should improve, especially with quality coaching.

The D played great, but I’m not too hot on that prevent D that allowed the last drive. Also, though it was only 3 or 4 plays, the DE and/or OLB got pinched inside on sweep/off tackle plays (one of my pet peeves). Clean that up, and there’s a helluva defense, there.

I hopr Cincy’s D is that good, and not that Denver’s O is that bad.

A lot of luck in the end, but there was a lot to build from.

…prevent D as much as a screw up by playing too much zone. We have quality CBs and SAFs, so we should have been in man (in my opinion). I think we got a little nervous, and switched to zone when we should have stuck with the pressure and man coverages. Still, it is easy for me to second guess in hindsight.

Orton was awful. His WRs dropped a few balls, but he also threw several passes behind the WRs, in the dirt or into double or triple coverage.

His arm is not great, but that was not my problem with him today. It was his lack of accuracy and horrible pocket presence. McDaniels nearly ripped his head off after the last sack. The first two sacks were also on Orton. He is not looking defenders off and he got his WRs crushed a time or four. Orton had a poor first game saved by a miracle. We can’t hope for this every week. Orton is not playing smart and that really hurts. This guy doesn’t look like a player to me. Not even close to one.

D looks freaking awesome (big props to A Smith, he was a 1st round pick on game day), Prater was money and the special teams were better than Cincys.. But the O has really regressed. I still miss Jay. We got much worse at QB this offseason.

on the other hand

his receivers dropped several balls. most of those weren’t orton’s fault, but they count against his stats. You can’t have it one way without having it the other. That’s why tipped-and-caught balls are counted in passer’s quarterback ratings – qbs get both lucky and unlucky. 100.7 is the real rating for the game.

by tunesmith on Sep 14, 2009 3:25 AM MDT up reply actions

A ball lands in the receiver's hands

He bobbles it or it bounces out and into the hands of a DB. The QB gets “credited” with an interception. We see examples of that virtually week in and week out, so why be churlish when a guy gets a break?

And as you mentioned further up. It was the same old Orton. Ugly, scruffy, untidy but you failed to mention ……

a winner.

C'mon now.

If the guy has bad stats, folks will dog him. If he has good stats, apparently he still gets dogged. We can “take” away a play if we want, but then the stat becomes invalid. The stats are what they are.

Did I like Orton’s play? Not really. But considering the stiched finger, the first game with a new team and system, and the lack of INTs, I’m satisfied.

"Greater is an army of sheep led by a lion, than an army of lions led by a sheep" Defoe

by Steve Nichols on Sep 14, 2009 2:39 PM MDT up reply actions

I didn't see awful

I saw receivers dropping passes that hit them in the hands. Hillis, Stokely, Gaffney and especially Marshall let catchable balls go through their hands. I also saw a Cincinnati defense that has a very good secondary — there was not a lot of room to throw a lot of times. The fact there were no interceptions was actually a bit of a surprise to me.

Also, the Cincinnati secondary is really good at reacting and moving to the ball. Sometimes too good: watch the Stokely TD again and you’ll see safety rotate over to the outside, leaving Stokely all alone for the tip drill. The safety begins to move as the ball is being thrown, not before. Perhaps he recognized that was where Orton was looking, but it is still a very fast reaction.

Don’t get me wrong — I think Orton needs to up the level of play. I do agree he is not looking off as well as he should, and I don’t think he’s seeing the entire field as there were a few times he had better choices further down field (in my humble opinion as a guy in the bleachers rather than on the field). And he probably should have done soemthing to avoid losing so much yardage on the last sack that took them out of the lock-it-up FG range (but note there were also two non-Orton miscues that moved them back to begin with).

However, I will note that at 48:00, before the Bengals began their last drive, Kyle Orton and Carson Palmer had nearly identical stats, with the exception of Palmer’s INT.

Is Orton the once and future QB? Nope, never. But he’s better than you give him credit for, McGeorge. Let him get the stitches out and play more than 4 quarters before you chuck him under the bus.

Cutler...1st half and 3 picks...

1 in the red zone. That sure brings back memories…still miss him??

I will say that Orton should have his arse chewed for taking that sack when we were in FG territory. That was just a very bad decision on his part….throw the darn ball away. We were lucky to get this win…had we lost, it would have been because of that sack.

I do hope we are done with the bashing on trading the pick for Alphonso Smith.

Unfortunately, he did the same things that he did as a Bronco – locking on his primary, letting mistakes get to his head, forcing the ball. I’m sure he’ll have much better days, but let’s be fair here – Jay looked awful, Orton wasn’t good but looked better than Cutler (no INTs) and somehow, Orton gets the win again.

Too good not to reprint:
At the rate he was going in the first half, it was a wonder Bears coach Lovie Smith didn’t throw his red flag and challenge the trade that brought the quarterback to town.

The scouting report on Cutler always has been that the rewards outweigh the risks on the field. He’ll brashly, rashly throw into coverage and break a coach’s heart once in a while, but he’ll make more plays than not.

On Sunday night, Cutler’s worst attributes crept into the light. Time and again, he tried to make plays only he saw. He threw across his body. He threw off the wrong foot. He screamed at a world that would do him so wrong.

Orton did look bad

I can’t fault him quite as much as you do, McG. The first two sacks were due to breakdowns in protection – the third was entirely on him. He’s throwing with 15 stitches on his right index finger and it’s going to affect his accuracy. It did. He also managed a Qb rating of over 100, so he surely wasn’t quite as bad as all that.

Let’s dun him for the bad he does, and there was plenty. But let’s be fair: he also did some good things and the receivers played dropsy. The O line was a huge disappointment to me in pass pro and with the run game. I understand that you’d like him gone, but it’s not going to happen unless he doesn’t progress.

Yes it's easy to be Captain Obvious

We will see more games where KO will be off in terms of his timing, or will simply hold onto the ball too long, but these are all a part of the growing pains in this new offensive system.

Once it plays itself out, they’ll look much better.

Yeah, but...

What happens to ANY stat when you take away or add anything? The stat is a reflection of what actually happened.

Also, the knock (by some) on Orton was the INTs this pre-season. Orton is known for being good at protecting the ball, and he did so today. Was he great today? No way. Was he awful? No.

I think we should give him a few games.

The one cut and run isn't being taught, it seems

One play in the first quarter stands out in my mind. The play was going to the right and a nice hole open up. Moreno started into the hole and saw a LB coming fast to fill, so he tried to correct and bounce further outside. Result was a run for no gain, when I think he could have made 3-4 going into the hole and taking the hit from the LB. Again, my view was from the endzone, and the hole looked like the ones the OL has been opening since the days of TD. I suspect Moreno just needs to learn that the lateral pursuit is a lot faster in the NFL than in college.

by DCJ on Sep 13, 2009 6:51 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed

I saw Moreno especially but all the running backs making the same mistake. None of them have ever run in a ZB offense before so it will take some time to get used to. It’s one cut and go. It is not one cut, another cut, juke to the side, hesitate, and then go! They also did not seem to wait for the holes to open up and instead made their cut and hit the line before the hole had fully developed. Fortunately that kind of error can be coached out of them. Patiience is a virtue in the ZB running game.

by Endzone on Sep 13, 2009 10:28 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed

The offensive coaches will be hammering away at this with the RBs this week. Ahhhhh the growing pains of learning a new system!

by Horsepower on Sep 13, 2009 11:00 PM MDT up reply actions

Me too, agreed

I saw that play and immediately thought the same thing – one cut and go, no second guessing

by dwinjapan on Sep 14, 2009 5:01 AM MDT up reply actions

I think that they miss Kuper in a big way

You just don’t have the timing, confidence and automatic assumptions with a fill-in players (no matter how good) than you do with a guy like Kuper who has been in the system and the others know. It will get better. All in good time, as long as we pull out insane victories in the meantime.

It was his lack of accuracy and horrible pocket presence. McDaniels nearly ripped his head off after the last sack. The first two sacks were also on Orton. He is not looking defenders off and he got his WRs crushed a time or four.

In my mind these are issues of him being uncomfortable in the pocket, and in the new system. I don’t think you can put any QB in a completely new system, with a new coach, and players he’s never played with and expect them to excel immediately. If he looks like this by week 5 I’ll worry. At this point in the season I think our focus is gelling as a team, while not falling too far behind san diego.

Week 1- Mission accomplished!

Agreed.

And let’s not forget he was playing injured too.

I just watched the replay several times

Orton held too long on one but got ankle tacked from behind. On the second, Orton had no where to go and the protection broke down – not his fault.

There was a lot to like about the win. Namely the Win, but also the D and several individual players on D.

Orton… Not much to like at all. He still has a LONG WAY TO GO.

Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.

by BroncoSense72 on Sep 13, 2009 4:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Orton was hand picked for this system, therefore he needs to be productive.

I am very curious to learn what the benchmarks and timetables for him. There is nothing wrong with having a game manager as a veteran number 2 QB but the starter needs to put a bit of fear into the opposing defenses and fans. I sure hope that TB v.2 starts getting some snaps.

I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

by Arctic Bronco on Sep 13, 2009 6:43 PM MDT up reply actions

One last time

Orton was not “hand-picked” for this system. Instead, he was the best QB available from the various other teams who made offers, and was probably the final consideration that sealed the deal, but he was not the main object of the trade. So it is appropriate to say the Broncos chose Orton over Jason Campbell, but it not appropriate to say that Orton was specifically chosen by the Broncos.

(and that is the last time until someone else parrots the MSM party line).

by DCJ on Sep 13, 2009 7:07 PM MDT up reply actions   2 recs

+1

rec’d for stating the obvious. Saying McD “handpicked” Orton snidely and insidiously implies and supports the erroneous story that McD “tried to trade” Cutler. Orton was, and is, a serviceable NFL calibre QB. There was no way we could trade Cutler and NOT get a veteran starting quality NFL QB. To say that McD chose the best option available is probably closer to the truth.

by Endzone on Sep 13, 2009 10:35 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, he does

The offense isn’t there.

But I’ll give them a few games before I start to pass full judgment. The defense and ST were much improved, and that made me happy. If the O can pull things around over the next 2-3 games, Denver is in the mix. Guess we’ll see.

The scramble and completion by Orton was prety good considering Weigman held.

That 1st down could have silled the Bengals fate and game over. The OLine needs a lot of work. The defense was spectacular.

by bfree2bronc on Sep 13, 2009 5:36 PM MDT reply actions

As far as the D

I thought we may have to wait ’till the end of October before we see the D playing well. They are much improved over last season.

The center of the field is an area they are leaving open, which is scary. But compared to the last 2 years, our new D has arrived!

by Horsepower on Sep 13, 2009 5:51 PM MDT up reply actions

My observations

I was expecting the offense not to click on all 8 cylinders, so actually the offense was as good as I expected and I also expect them to get better as the season goes on. The one on offense that I was impressed with was Buckhalter.

Defensively, They were better than what I had expected. True dropped passes helped and I wouldn’t count the last interception but they did well until the last drive. They still need to work on getting off the field on third downs. I was impressed with Cincy’s Oline and I think Cincy like Denver is a better team than the credit they are given.

Smith made plays that got Cincy off the field and should get some credit for the win. So right away he makes that pick a lesser one that Seattle will get.
Bdawk improves the D in himself greatly from last years D

by Endzone on Sep 13, 2009 10:38 PM MDT up reply actions

I know it won't be the last time I hear it

But Alphonso Smith appears to be a steal. He played very big today. I know the haters will still hate and dispute the trade logic but having next years number out there this year looks real smart to me.

Bring on the Browns!

13-3 (12 more wins to go!)

Loving this move at the moment

Smith appears to be worth the first rounder, and not only do we have him a year early, but we have him at a second round price tag. I really don’t understand the thought process behind wanting that top 5 pick back. A top 5 pick gets paid like a star player, if you miss on that pick you’re set back years concerning the salary cap. I’ll take a 12-18 pick anyday over a top 5. Still have stud talents available, at or less than half the cost

by Kgrone on Sep 13, 2009 8:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Never mind the top 5 rap

Today I saw a young man who played like a top 5 player. All the discussion and the bitterness don’t mean a thing – he did a great job and is clearly the best rookie on the field. That’s not a small thing. Smith was exactly what we wanted him to be.

I love the fact

that Andra Davis recorded the Broncos first sack of the year.

That special teams almost-castoffs Reid and Haggan got the next two.

That Scheffler had an interception. So our tight ends have more interceptions that our secondary.

That we could win when our offense played so poorly

That we play Dallas at home. I really think we have a good shot at winning that one.

A couple of random notes:

I wish folks would give Orton more of a chance. Let’s wait til after week 4 to assess where he is at.

I wish I had cable so I could watch the games….

Well said

Some fans are short-sighted, while others are intelligent, and know that a dynasty take time to establish.

We may not have the personnel for that this year, but this team is headed that way for the next decade, for sure.

by Kgrone on Sep 13, 2009 10:15 PM MDT reply actions

Agree on most things...

1) Orton can be cut some slack for a game #1 vs. a solid Bungles defense. However, only getting inside the 35 yard line twice (not counting the prayer at the end) is not even close to acceptable. Orton and offenses grade = D-

2) Defense was better, but way early to get too excited. Cincinnati had very little to game plan against and much of what Denver was doing had to be a surprise. Let’s give it a couple more games when teams can game plan against the scheme effectively before getting too excited. Also, when it mattered the most, they gave up the TD. Grade B

2b) ST’s looked much better. Still worries me seeing starters on the field for those plays.

3) Incredible that Stokley could get behind their defense. This’ll be a classic prevent training film for years.

7) I thought both teams looked pretty average and plain. It was nice to see the Broncos defense being aggressive.

8) Is a much better tackling defense than last year. Thought Davis looked solid and his lack of speed didn’t seem to come into play. Dawkins looked good but seemed slower than I remembered him in Philly. Alphonso Smith & Goodman looked solid in the secondary.

9) I’m very worried about the running game. The Patriots have only really had one as an option to keep opponents honest, can see it going that way with the Broncos. It could have been the Bengal D, but things really didn’t work in the running game. Would have liked to have seen more commitment to it.

by MTBroncoFan on Sep 13, 2009 10:39 PM MDT reply actions

Yup, the conditioning is MUCH better

We didn’t fade in the 4th quarter. Considering how much time the defense was on the field, that was an incredible performance. GO Broncos!! (Hey, is Nestle’s still making Orange Crush? If not, maybe we can bring back the old nickname without them throwing another hissy-fit.)

by idahobronc on Sep 13, 2009 11:31 PM MDT reply actions

Conditioning

Excellent ponit. I saw the Cincy players sweating and winded with their hands on their hips. I never saw a Bronco look winded, sweating or with their hands on their hips.

League Comparisons

I’m scared. I don’t think we could take on the Steelers right now. I’m extremely grateful that we have a few more weeks before hitting the tougher opponents like Dallas and NE. I’m not overly concerned about Cleveland or Oakland but still hope we don’t let our guard down.

by Endzone on Sep 13, 2009 11:38 PM MDT reply actions

I am happy cause

with a good defense you are in every game. If the offense “gets it” it will be fun seeing them hold the ball and time come off the clock too as well as some points!

Champ looked like the real Champ we have come to enjoy and Dawkins led the team in tackles!

I would hope you would support who we are. Not, who we are not. Coach Norman Dale "Hoosiers"

by dmitchell624 on Sep 14, 2009 5:45 AM MDT up reply actions

It was fun

to see a safety who would actually stop a play instead of watching it go by him. Ya their offense made some gains but they were generally crushed wherever they caught the ball. No easy gimme scores.

Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

by Kfustud on Sep 14, 2009 7:43 AM MDT up reply actions

I'm Hoping

that we can get a couple things figured out by the Dallas game. I only get to go to a game once every couple of years, or maybe once a year if I’m lucky. And this year I am going to the Dallas game with my sister in law, which happens to be a Cowboys fan. If they lose I can deal with it, but I would much rather rub it in her face that we, “the lowly cant beat anybody with our QB or defense and HC” Broncos beat the “were Americas team” Cowboys.

I think with a couple more games of the offense getting together, we will be just fine. And Orton will find his groove, I have no doubt.

There is no charge for awesomeness, or attractiveness!!

THANK YOU COACHES - McDaniels Included

The Bengals Score with 38 seconds left on the clock. Cut to commercial break…and Viola. the clock says 20 seconds left. WTF!!! McDaniels and the coaches in the booth were all over it. Unfortunately, it took the “Zebras” five minutes to figure it out…but they finally did.

Without the time clock correction. Stokely never gets the ball…………………..Denver would have been forced to try other plays.

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also DREAM; not only plan, but also BELIEVE.

by Broncobh on Sep 14, 2009 9:26 AM MDT reply actions

not sure

how you rationalize that last statement……..the time change does not affect it Stokely gets the ball or not……if I remember correctly…….

Without the time change Sheffler doesn’t get a pick….but Stokely still runs it in.
