Urlacher Out: The 2010 Draft Just Got Sweeter
Just in from the Sun-Times: Brian Urlacher is out for the year. Others who watch the Bears may disagree, but this will be worth something to the Broncos in the draft next year. Urlacher covers so much ground for that D; everything about their attacking style rests on his ability to move fluidly in four directions. He also helps the Bears defense to cover many of its weaknesses.
The Bears were a team in defensive decline before this happened. I'm increasingly happy to hold their first-round pick.

Not that I don't wish him well.
The guy’s a heck of a player, and I will never wish for an injury. But the facts are the facts, and Bears really aren’t that far away from a disaster season.
With the upfront money that these 1st round draft picks get....
….do you guys really think the Broncos front office really wants that high 1st round draft pick from the Bears? A top 10 pick? I don’t. But I’d like to hear everyone else’s opinions.

I agree with you
I think somewhere in the teens is as high as they want, but its a new era, so maybe they do.

If it is high enough to land a franchise qb?
Hell yes. And there are a few in next year’s draft more highly thought of than anyone to come out in several years.

BRANDSTARTER!
they will probably [hopefully] use the top picks next year to shore up the defensive front seven, the interior of the o-line, and maybe snag another playmaker at WR
clever
I like BrandstaRter. Pretty high on that dude, aren’t you? So, do you feel as dirty as I do today after the ugly wins by both our Rams and our Broncos? And after seeing Toledo destroy the Buffs on Friday, I guess maybe our Rams aren’t all that good?

Hate to break it to you....
but this management team is just not going to use a first-round draft pick on a quarterback. No way. You’ll have a much more pleasant offseason if you reconcile yourself to that fact early on.
I’m with the ’copter on this one. They will clearly follow the best-player available approach. In addition to the D-line, I would be thrilled if they used an early draft pick (a 2nd) on an interior OL. The quality of play has been declining their for a long time.
+1
Yup, my thoughts exactly. Once everyone gets over the idea of a 1st round quarterback selection the better.

1st Round QB
I am not completely opposed to a 1st round QB. John Elway was a 1st rounder. I’m thinking USC’s Matt Barkley in a few years, assuming Bates doesn’t ruin him.
Me neither,
I just don’t see it happening. I’d love for them to draft a 1st round immediate impact (relatively) franchise QB prospect but I highly doubt it will happen.
McDaniels is obviously borrowing a lot of the framework for how he would like this team run from his old team. It’s more about the system than the individual – see Kyle Orton – which I understand but don’t neccesarily agree with 100%. I still want a stud quarterback but I think if I expect one of these hot shit QB’s like Bradford, McCoy, Barkley, Snead, etc. to be him, then I think I’ll be sorely dissapointed.

true, I think Tebow is going to be something special
but I also like our own Tom B – who won’t cost us nearly as much as TT will, if we even draft high enough, which I doubt. Losing Urlacher is a blow to Chicago and Cutler will lose as many games for them as he’ll win, but I doubt they’ll be a top-ten pick next year.
Their schedule is as so:
Steelers
Seahawks
Lions
Falcons
Bengals
Browns
Cards
Niners
Eagles
Vikings
Rams
Packers
Ravens
Vikings
Lions
They’ve got some tough battles, particularly in-division with the Vikings, and already a loss to the Packers. And the Steelers are formidable as ever. But you can’t tell me, with the Lions, Rams, ect they will be a top-ten pick in 2010.

Ggah!
Enough with the desire for a “franchise QB.”
We watched one throw 4 picks last night, and beat another one yesterday afternoon.
Sorry for this...
But I gotta bring up Ryan Leaf again! But hey, Sanchez didn’t do too bad for the Jets.
So in 3 or 4 years, do you think they might be looking back on Quitler about the same as they do Leaf? The dude could snap any minute.
no one will ever match Ryan Leaf.
Just from googling “NFL draft Busts” and taking a quick look at the results, He’s the unanimous pick for the worst all time. Cutler may be immature, but he’s atleast accomplished some on the field.

Sadly
I think Ryan Leaf’s one and only great game was against the Broncos in Denver one year. Pissed me off to no end.

The fact that NE traded Seymour for a '11 #1 draft pick is a good sign.
I might be reading a bit too much into this, but we all know NE’s viewpoint towards top-10 draft picks (with which I agree wholeheartedly) So why did they trade Seymour to Oakland for what is likely to be a to 10 pick? My guess is that Bob Kraft expects a Rookie wage scale to be in place by then. in realitly, Not even Kraft knows if that will be the case, but he probably has a good idea how hard the owners will push for it, so I’d bet there’s a decent chance that a wage scale will be in effect within a couple years.
As to our remaining #1 next year, that won’t be affected. my guess is that if Chicago’s pick ends up being in the top-ten, they’ll try to trade down into the middle third of the first round. IMO, if that were the case I’d throw the draft charts out the window (they were created well before top ten contracts began to get out of hand) and do anything nessecary to get out of the to 10. For example, i’d go so far as to trade a #5 for a #15, even steven.
Another possiblity would be holding on to the pick and not using until a few other teams have gone, then only offering a player a contract commensurate with the resulting draft slot. This would be a sure-fire way to cause a holdout, as the player and agent would be under HUGE pressure from fellow agents, players and the NFLPA to go after a contract
conmensurate with the original draft slot. But the message it would send would be enourmous – the resulting controversy would lay bare the truth that the top of the NFL draft truly has no clothes. not even the agents could credibly ignore it then (although they’ll surely try). i wouldn’t put it past Bowlen to send just such a message – remember that he was the first owner to start cuttting veterans when the labor deal looked like it was collapsing a couple of years ago.

Urlacher
Get well man, you are fun to watch.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

agree with this
The league is better with Urlacher in it. Period.

Thanks Bob
Very nice gesture for a tough first week.

If they work out a rookie wage cap, top 5 would be great… Or, we could get that pick and trade down and turn it into a late 1st and a second or something along those lines, that would be nice.
However, Da Bears played a good team at home last night, so we can’t count them out yet. Overall, 11-18 is the range I’d want to be at…
I am hoping the Bears have a mediocre season.
I hope the Packers take the division. Farve can be an impact on that division as well.
yeah, as long as he hands it off to AP and stays out of the way :-P

I don't recall
when one game decided draft position. The defenses’ decline is supremely exaggerated since they have plenty of youthful depth, and also starting. Since when is holding one of the best offenses to 226 total yards without Timo, Urlacher, and a healthy Tillman in decline? Derrick Brooks is on the phone with Jerry Angelo as we speak.

Probably just for depth
In case Roach, Hillenmeyer, or Williams goes down.

I don't know if I would say they were on the decline
Up until the last drive last night, they looked pretty good. But, I agree that losing Urlacher will hurt them and should hopefully net us a better pick next year.

The Bears pick at 12
I propose the Bears will go 8-8, (sound familiar, Jay?) and garner for us the twelfth pick. A huge, lightning fast, deep threat, Moss-like receiver or a monster, Urlacherest, ILB will be the pick. Our pick in the high twenties (or low thirties) will be used for a Clady-Clone OL.
Branstater will be The Broncos’ Franchise QB in three years so no need to use any picks on non-impact players.

The middle third of the first round, (in my decidedly non-scientific and completely arbitrary opinion) is a sweet spot where you can pick up premiere talent at tolerable prices (I’m looking at you , Ryan Clady!)

Fun stat
of the starting quarterbacks in week 1 of this season, 18 were drafted in the first round.
18/32 = 56%
So I’m going with the crowd that’s against drafting QB’s in the first.
