"I think he's getting better," said Elway. "Obviously I think his finger is bothering him and I think offensively it doesn't look like everything is clicking for him yet."

"You know that they have the talent offensively to be a good team. I just think that is hasn't really clicked with everybody yet."

"You can spend all the time in the world you want in the off-season going over a new offense, trying to get it down mentally, but until you get into the games and get under the fire it's tough to react to it and really feel comfortable with that offense. Kyle's been in there before. He'll be perfect in this offense as time goes on and he gets more comfortable with it."

Those are pretty powerful words

I was going to say the same thing..

..Perfect is a very strong word to use.. I’m pretty sure we all consider him someone in the know when it comes to what it takes to be a successful NFL QB!

by HorseStance on Sep 15, 2009 3:49 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Those were definitely bold words...

especially coming from Elway!!! I do think that he is right though. It does take time for an offense to learn a new system and the only way to actually learn it is by running it in a game. It’s good to hear Mr. Elway say that Orton is going to be good in this system. Maybe that will shut the MSM up…it probably won’t though.

I wouldn’t look much into this guys. Not that he’s seeing anything more than we are in the first place.

God, I'd vote him into office right now.

What a terrific ambassador for the team. You never heard anything about his opinion on the franchise’s tumultuous offseason, just 100% support. God bless this man.

by legendarywalton on Sep 15, 2009 4:13 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Thank goodness that this organization has John Elway.

He has been all support all the time. I’ll take his opinion over any experts’ no matter what.

#7 offfering his expert opinion.

Too bad ESPN doesn’t pay him for it. Probably too much common sense and realism for them.

Quick question; Does anyone remember if John came out and offered such an endorsement for “you know who”? Off the top of my head I can’t, however, I could very well be wrong.

Gotta be a confidence booster for Orton to hear John say good things about him.

I don't think he said anything good about Cutler...

because Cutler was too busy telling the media how much stronger his arm is than Elway’s.

Haha, yeah.

But that was in year 3, so I’d be kinda surprised he never said much about Cutler before then.

Maybe John Elway’s silence should have told us more than our own beliefs.

This is what he said on Cutler

On Jay Cutler

“Obviously he’s in a new system with a new offense. He doesn’t have the same set of receivers in Chicago that he had here in Denver.”

“The athletic ability like he has and the arm strength that he has gets you in trouble a little bit. I think that (Sunday) night he was trying to do a little too much a lot of times and I had that same problem at times.”

Glad to hear something about Orton who knows what they're talking about.

I definitely feel that once this O finds it’s rhythm, it will be dominant

Yes dominant, really!

This is the same exact attitude that many McDissers had about our Defense as well. But after pre season progress was backed up with a great week 1 performance against a team with several talented offensive weapons I hear nothing about how horrible a job McD did with our Defense.

Now these same naysayers are trying to tear down our Offense with snide remarks such as these. What are you going to complain about when our Offense clicks and actually does start dominating?

Ohhhh, that feels good!

Seriously, I find that VERY reassuring. Even a believer like myself (believer in the need to change the system and liking the direction being taken) sometimes needs a few words from a respected source. In my gut, I am as impatient as anyone……. I want to win NOW……but I have to deliberately temper that need with the understanding that we need to walk the road to get to the destination. Nice to have a signpost or two to let me know I (we) haven’t gone astray.

by idahobronc on Sep 15, 2009 4:37 PM MDT reply actions   1 recs

Perfect huh? Me likey!

That is amazing though… I don’t think I ever heard Elway say a good thing about Cutler. I wonder if he knew what type of a guy the Cry-Baby was as soon as he met him… I’d go with a resounding “yes!” on that one.

I couldn’t be happier with the way things are going with this team, I feel the goodness.

Nope

They wouldn’t dare take on the Elway.

They just continue to nibble around the edges at Orton.

Edges?

There’s a buffet-line to feast on with this guy. I don’t think any judgement should be cast at this point, but if you don’t consider his week-1 performance to be underwhelming, well you must be a frequent poster of MHR.

He should have been 16-26, 156, no tds, a pick, 6pts and at fault for the mistake of the game (taking that sack).

by rururuland784 on Sep 16, 2009 12:14 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Underwhelming

I thought so too, but I get the feeling you want gaudy numbers or he’s a hack. If playing with him as QB results in W’s then I’ll take it.

by NDbronco on Sep 16, 2009 7:20 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, not guady numbers

But a QB must first be evaluated by his production, before you take into consideration the specific decisions he made at certain times that are perceived to have greater impact on the final result. (as in certain plays have more importance than others, which some accept and some do not)

These so called crucial time decisions, which perhaps if we view KO as the game manager type, would be key.

But I’ve never been a big believer in W/L record for QB’s when the full scope of context and circumstance isn’t flushed out. IMO, taking the W/L record at face value can be a more deceiving stat than many of the raw QB efficiency metrics.

by rururuland784 on Sep 16, 2009 10:50 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Remember the first games of CASSEL last year

after he took for Brady. Underwhelming. And that despite having learned the system for 2(?) years from the bench. Then things clicked. You did say it may be too early to judge…. that I concur with. I just am really not expecting too much until the second half of the season, so until then, I believe. I think that is what Elway was trying to say also…. give him time to have the system click. Go Broncos!.

by idahobronc on Sep 16, 2009 9:00 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Plus, this is only his 3rd year as a starter

That is not that much experience. Yet the Orton-haters act like they know his potential-ceiling which happens to be not much better than what he has shown already in the league. It is nonsensical to believe that Orton will not continue to grow and mature as a QB and even more so to think any of us knows how good of a QB he will turn out to be over his career.

People can use statistics to prove anything, 87% of all people know that.

You've got to see it first

Not a big blind faith guy. He’s got 4 games in the system of pretty consistent performances. We shall see.

Elway - Phoo

Who is Elway? A retired old man that the game left behind. If he’s going to be a mouthpiece for the Broncos, let him be a real mouthpiece. Pay the man and then we can all drink the Elway Kool-Aid. That being said (and having a very difficult time getting my tongue out of my cheek), I wonder if Elway would ever consent to becoming a QB coach? Then again, He has way too many irons in the fire to mess with something like that.

I feel a poll coming on.

Who thinks Elway would make a good Head Coach? A GM? An Owner?

by ArtfulDodger on Sep 16, 2009 2:12 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Elway - Part Deux

I agree with what Elway said about the Broncos in general. However, before I commit to naming Orton the next great Bronco QB, I’ll have to see how the entire season pans out and whether or not Denver takes a QB in the draft. That will tell the story. I’m NOT a nay sayer. Just a guarded optimist.

We should be careful what we wish for.

I like a business man who is a football FAN being the owner. I’m afraid that Elway knows too much about the game, and he would be a little too controlling, even though we love him.
