Nah. Just punt the ball out of bounds. No need to play with fire when our next opponent has one of the very worst offenses in the NFL.
If McDaniels and Phiefer are somewhat competent, Cribbs will have minimal impact on special teams. I would hope Denver learned their lesson (several times the hard way) about punting to a guy like Cribbs or Hester.

I’ve been saying this for years…you don’t punt to Hester. Cribbs is in that group as well…just kick it out of bounds. I’ll take the known smaller punt average over the unknown REAL possibility of them taking it to the house every day.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

but it still happened. I can’t believe that Shanahan wouldn’t have avoided kicking right to Hester if he couldn’t. The skills of the punter come into play.

Exactly, just don't kick to the guy
But…. can Kern do that? He seems pretty weak in the directional kicking area.

+1
I understand you get burned now and then, but I’d rather put it in the hands of 11 guys rather than one. A shanked directional punt could change the balance of field position and the game almost quickly as a big return.
I say punt however you normally would and trust your guys.
by PredominantlyOrange on Sep 18, 2009 11:24 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Therein lies the question
Do we trust our guys enough to peg them against an explosive, dangerous individual, who could devestate us on the run when you could just not give him that opportunity and let your D stop their O on even terms?

by DenBronx on Sep 18, 2009 11:29 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think there is a reason teams rarely kick away from guys.
I think this is true because the directional game is tricky and thus riskier and because although the big return is dramatic, its far more rare than people think.
I’m not a stats guy, but I’d bet the body of stats favors taking your chances with dangerous returners rather than trying to get cute with them. This is why more often than not— to the fan’s obvious chagrine— most teams opt to take their chances.
by PredominantlyOrange on Sep 18, 2009 11:49 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
This line of thinking is a mistake because Cribbs is better at special teams than our guys. But our D stacks up much better to Cleveland’s O than our special teams to Cribbs.
Denver should play to our strengths and not the strengths of Cleveland (Cribbs is a huge strength of theirs).
You need to read the Art of War.

Can Brett Kern win this fight? Maybe. Or does getting distracted by Josh Cribbs end up costing 100 yards of field position because of short or shanked kicks? Maybe.
I don’t think its as clear cut as some make it be.

Kicking Away
Something I want to know: how easy is it to actually “kick away” from someone? Assuming you want the punter to ge the ball 40-50 yards from the LOS with decent hang time, there’s only so much horizontal real estate on the field.
Kicking out of bounds can be effective, I guess…but I’d rather wait for that until there’s a very low chance of shanking a bit and putting Cleveland in Denver territory early.
Or maybe you make it a HUGE focus to get hang time on all kicks, sacrificing some of the distance in exchange for getting the coverage team in place.

It seems like you and DenBronx are saying the same thing: why let Cribbs get the chance to make a play, when the Denver D stacks up well against Cleveland’s O?
Unless this was more of a reply to PO, which would make sense considering his reply.

Anyone concerned about the run blocking scheme should check out McDaniels’s press conference — he talked a little about the situations where they prefer to go gap vs. zone. Also mentioned that they’re aiming to have about five skill position players on the field at the same time.
You know, I greatly enjoy McDaniels’s candor compared to Shanny’s little cat-and-mouse games with the press — he’s frank and forthcoming with most questions — but I do worry sometimes about how much information he’s imparting. Probably nothing the opponent’s OC/DC don’t already know, I guess.
Of course, I sometimes have the same reservation about the analysis on this site, but at least here I know it’s all just for-fun conjecture. ; )

The problem is
That by week 5 or 6 we are in the heart of our 8 games from he**. Even if he is very productive against Pit, Dallas, NE, and the chargers…..can he really put up huge numbers against those teams? I see our RBBC as an amazing thing, but I don’t see any single back getting huge fantasy points, I have buck, Hillis, and Moreno and in retrospect…not the strongest fantasy team.

That Don Banks article about teams that passed up Peterson is bizarre with picks 1 thru 6 in the 2007 NFL draft.
Detroit drafted the best young WR in the NFL in Calvin Johnson, Cleveland got a great LT in Joe Thomas. Washington had Portis in his prime so they took Landry (the best player in their secondary). Arizona was paying Edge James a ton of money so they took an LT that is a better than average starter. Gaines Adams is the best player on Tampa’s D-line and he had a great game vs Denver last year.
Is he trying to shame these foolish teams?

But come on. Their predicted scores are crazy! How do they expect to score 24-30 some odd points when our D just held the Bengals to 7? I wouldn’t be totally shocked to see a high scoring game though. But let’s put it this way, Denver’s D is better than Cleveland’s. Both teams have offenses that could potentially score points, and there’s the Cribbs factor. But a lopsided win for Cleveland would surprise me, I’ll just say that. Top oof the day nyc and thanks for the links.
The Legwold article on Moreno’s break-out is interesting and what we have been talking about lately. The hybrid scheme of blocking will take time to gel and once they get the hang of it we should see more production from our backs. I am sure the Browns have worked on the weaknesses they had against GreenBay concerning the running game. We will have to spread the ball around with better receptions if we want to win this game.

Corpse
I’m feeling irritated at a common literary fault I see occurring over and over. I saw it again in Bret Greenburg’s article.
It is “corps” when referring to a group of people, such as the wide receiver corps, the running back corps, the linebacking corps, the Marine Corps. “Core” means the central or innermost part.
It is NOT the “corpse” nor the “core”
My other little irritation is “loose” used as in to not win. “Loose” means to not fastened, restrained or contained. “Lose” is the right term when you don’t win. Unless of course you want to use the exclamatory “looooooser”.
Sorry for the rant folks.

Well, arguably anyway. Maybe a little rewording makes it clearer, i.e. ‘He also finds himself on a team where the core of the defense is mostly healthy and can cover up some of the mistakes he will undoubtedly make this season.’ I believe he is contrasting it with the Bears defense, where the core of the defense (Brian Urlacher) is not healthy.
Then again, he might be pulling the two words together into a slightly muddled mixture of both of them.

Endzone I am a of age
and I remember my nieces doing their homework (Phonics) where spelling was simplified to spell it out to the sound. Of course the school they went to wasn’t the same as mine and I had never been exposed to such garbage. Teachers twisting the American dictionary around to make it simpler to understand. I didn’t like it but that’s the way they had to do it.

loose is spelled the same way as lose? They are pronounced differently.
Nonetheless, I agree that the english language has changed. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can be annoying. I usually overlook such things. Today, for some reason, it just rubbed me the wrong way.

the Hochstein article
is fairly ridiculous, because he was obviously the weak link in the line. I haven’t had time to peruse the video yet, but while I was cutting out the commercials I did notice that Hochstein was definitely at fault for giving up the sack that took us out of field goal range. He couldn’t maintain the block on his man initially, and then blocked him into Weigs, which took Weigs off his man (the blitzling linebacker) AND allowed Hochstein’s DT to get to Orton for the sack. It wasn’t a huge blitz (one backer only), and Orton called out the linebacker before the play, so with Kuper in that play I think Orton has enough time to get a completion or at least chuck the ball away. But with six in coverage it wasn’t guaranteed that there would be anyone wide open for a quick dump job when things go south.
The Legwold Q&A about the hybrid run scheme also bugs me. He acts like an O-Line returning all five starters (the Kuper injury notwithstanding) who dominated in a zone-block run game last year can’t remember how to do it. They’ve gone too far to go back! Right. I’ve also been less than impressed with our run game so far, in preseason and against the Bengals. It seems to either not get started, or like against the Bengals essentially abandoned despite early success. Buckhalter especially seemed to be running real well, at the beginning of the first and third quarters but there was no sustained effort at running the ball. I’m simply not satisfied with “this is my scheme, even if it isn’t effective running the ball” talk when we obviously have the skill to do otherwise.
