What Does The Team Really Need?

I posted this in another Fanpost yesterday and a few members asked that it be posted as its own Fanpost.

What Does The Team Really Need?

And how can we leverage Marshall to achieve meeting that need?

To me that is the question.

  • Do we need Brandon Marshall? My answer is no. We have other receivers and they are doing good. Are we a better team with BM? I’m not really sure. I have not seen him play at all with the new system. If you look at last year, then yes we would be a better team.
  • What other team needs are there? Defense: our front 3 are doing extremely well. Weakside DB’s are doing extremely well. Strongside DB’s could use some help. Safeties and CB’s are doing well but need some adjustments (I don’t think we need personnel adjustments there). Special Teams = if we could get Devin Hester I’d be stoked. I don’t think Chicago will do that, A. Smith, P. Hillis and McKinley all look good, so I’m not convinced it is a real need. Offense: assuming all of our injured players return, we are fine. Could we use an upgrade at QB? NO and NO and NO.

I see our biggest NEED as a monster LOLB good in pass defense (cover the seam routes), the run game and rushing the passer.

Second biggest NEED is a big-body WR like BM. I think Scheffler could fill that role extremely well if given a chance.

So, who’s willing to “MAKE A DEAL?” AND what deal do we want?

I don’t want a QB this year. Orton backed by Simms and with Brandstater’s progress – we’re just fine thank you. Maybe next year.

I want a monster LOLB!

Vernon Gholston?

If BMarsh does get dealt to the Jets, who on earth would they get? Just draft picks? I agree with you that the team needs another LB or even a better nose tackle. The Jets invested a lot in Gholston as their 1st round pick but they picked up Bart Scott so he would be available.

Yesterday were saying straight up for Bart Scott. I don’t know enough about him.

GHOLSTON !

Looks lost still . a comment made dy a local NY jets football game comentator in the last preseason
game . I watched all the jets games so far > I have to agree . he looks out of position a lot and
misses a lot of tackles . NO NO NO dont want him sorry .

What about Scott?

Would he be an upgrade? And is that the position you would most like to upgrade?

by Endzone on Sep 2, 2009 11:54 AM MDT up reply actions

ps

Would you start a new thread stating what position you would like to upgrade using a trade for Marshall?

by Endzone on Sep 2, 2009 11:57 AM MDT up reply actions

Thanks

But I’m interested in who YOU would want. My opinion doesn’t count for much in the overall theme of this post. I just want a good debate on what fans think should be improved and how they can do it by trading Marshall. I’m just the moderator.

Ghoulston

Why would we even consider trading a high dollar contract player at any position for Marshall?

by Endzone on Sep 2, 2009 12:07 PM MDT up reply actions

The biggest need is at QB, but they aren’t going to land any upgrades this season. I don’t think Cleveland parts with Quinn in a Marshall deal.

I agree that a monster OLB would be nice. It appears that Jarvis Moss may officially become a bust soon, no? Thanks for that, Shanny. Why was he able to draft fairly well on O and not on D over the years?

Why QB?

Just asking. Orton has the 4th highest completion percentage in the preseason, has a winning record, is a leader, etc. On the other hand, he’s leading the preseason with 4 interceptions. Are you giving up on Orton, Simms & Brandstater? Are there any other QB’s out there you like? (I happen to like A.J. Feeley) I’d like to hear more why you think QB is where we could get the best value in a trade for Marshall.

by Endzone on Sep 2, 2009 11:41 AM MDT up reply actions

Mostly not at all sold on Orton. His career yards per attempt are pretty indicative of his ability, imo. And his career TD to INT ratio is near 1:1, meaning that even though he doesn’t typically throw the ball down the field very often, when he does, the results aren’t good.

I have a very good friend who is a long-time Bear fan and watches them much more than anyone here (or that would be my guess). He was elated by the trade and was the first one who I heard call Orton “noodle arm.” He said that when he does try to go down the field, typically his balls either sail or hang up.

Simms is injury prone and Brandstater is a project. I can’t remember a time when I was less enthusiastic about the Bronco QB situation, and I’ve been a fan for about 40 years.

Take out Orton's rookie season

His TD/INT ratio improves to about 3:2, vs. near 1:1. I know it’s part of his past, but he was thrown to the wolves that year in a not-so-good offense. Last year (with the nagging high ankle sprain), he was at exactly 3:2. My point is that stat lines can be interpreted to back almost any argument. I’ll withhold my (admittedly not valuable) judgment of Kyle until the season is really rolling.

by BroncosBassist on Sep 2, 2009 12:28 PM MDT up reply actions

TD/INT

Since the Bears were a running team, that number is distorted by scheme. As alsoBB says, this ration is nearly 3.2 since becoming the starter. That’s pretty good.

I’m bemused by this tendency to form hard opinions based on short periods of preseason play. Most folks see what they want to, I suppose

Sorry, but I just don’t agree with anything in the above short para. In fact, I find it completely baseless and insulting.

My opinion of Orton is based on his entire body of NFL work, work that includes being supplanted as a starter by none other than Rex fricken Grossman, around a 5.8 career yards per attempt passing average, and being traded, along with 2 number ones and a 3rd, for a real NFL qb and a 5th. I’m not the only one out there who thinks lowly of Kyle Orton. Evidently the Bears did as well. Based on their experience. In real games.

Now on to the “see what we want to see” comment. Oh really? I’ve been a Bronco fan for 40 years. So I want to see our new QB look like hell? Underwhelm? Look unable to accurately get the ball down the field more than 8 yards or so? Of course I don’t “want to see” that! I’ll spin cartwheels if Orton puts on a cape and becomes superman during the regular season. Or even if he looks like a legitimate starting NFL qb. My guess is that it won’t happen. But I’d “love to see” that happen. Wake me when it does. Please.

Fair enough

I’m sorry it insults you – wasn’t intended to. I’ve noticed that folks who have been against McDaniels from the start tend to believe that his decisions are worse than those who haven’t. That’s what I’ve seen. If you see something else, that’s fine too.

Look at your rant in the last paragraph, Bob. Unable to accurately get the ball down the field for more than 8 yards, right? I saw him throw nicely to the end zone, over 40 yards. That’s been mentioned by a few posters, so others did too. And that’s what I mean. You’re obviously angry.. That’s fine – that’s your business. I ‘m sorry you are, but I don’t think I’m the cause. Of course you’re not the only one who doesn’t like Orton. I never said that you were.

You know, I stand by what I’ve said. Most of the folks who dislike Orton so much didn’t like McD from the start. They wish we had Cutler back, and I’m over that whole thing. It’s not about Cutler, Bob. Orton has done well as a QB. He’s improved a great deal each year, and he hasn’t been in a good situation in Chicago – their offense didn’t fit his skillset. I watched him his whole career. I like him more than you and I think that he can help us. That’s not a problem, really. You’re entitled to your opinion, so am I, and we can disagree. Ok?

Hillis/Moreno in '09

by Doc Bear on Sep 2, 2009 4:41 PM MDT up reply actions

We certainly disagree on Orton. I think I agree with most Bear fans I know, and they should know, correct?

I wasn’t against McD from the beginning. I was against losing Cutler, because I do firmly believe that QBs with that kind of talent are hard to come by and a big plus to have. McD certainly hasn’t grown on me, but I’m still willing to give him time. I’m really hoping there will be much more to his offense than what we’ve seen in 3 preseason games, and it is reasonable to expect there will be. But can Orton make it much more?

As to citing one decent long or medium range pass here and there, I guess I should throw in “consistently” when I question his arm strength and accuracy. If he’s at this level, I sure as hell hope he can hurl one out there once in a while. But from most accounts, he hasn’t been able to do it very well overall in his career so far as a pro.

Fair? Yes, we disagree. Sorry if I took too much offense to the tone of your post above. The whole “see what they want to see” argument just grates on me. Everyone has a right to form their opinion based on what they see, no?

Sure they do

And, me too.

I don’t put a lot of stock in the Bears fans that come on here, or those who post anywhere if what they say disagrees with what I’ve seen. It’s like that argument that you stack the box to stop the short pass – you don’t. It opens you up against the short pass. It’s to stop the run, which is exactly what the Bears used. It’s a bad argument. I’ve watched Kyles professional games. I think that he’s a good QB. That’s as far as I’ll go.

As far as Orton’s arm – he throws several long routes very well. Ted even broke them down on one of his ST&NO articles. The fact that people are getting so angry over some preseason work indicates to me that for whatever reason, they’ve already made up their minds and looking for something to be irritated about. It’s not personal, and please don’t take it that way. I had a guy from San Diego email me this week who commented that a number of our posters seem to be ready to eat their young. There was a kernel of truth to it, and it does seem out of balance, but that’s just my opinion and it isn’t aimed at you directly. Please don’t take it that way.

Sure, if Kyle is very successful, folks will change their minds, but they do seem to be looking for reasons to be angry or concerned. I’m in a wait and see – I don’t expect to install one of the most complex offensive systems in the game and have it be ready to go in the first week of the season, much less in preseason. A number of our players made far worse errors than Orton – it’s a complicated system and we’re just learning it. If we still are having problems at the bye week – sure, pull him. I’d just give him a chance first.

Agree on the OLB

I’d love to see a strong side OLB. I think that Haggan is a stop-gap (I’d love to be proven wrong, though), and we could use at least one guy who is proven in coverage. I honestly can’t think of anything other than a big possession-type receiver, but there won’t be one of those worth trading for that someone would swap for Marshall.

Well, I guess upgrades at SILB and on the DL wouldn’t hurt, but those would be blockbuster-type trades, and I don’t see that happening.

HT's Article

Great article by HT today on the 5-2. Using his terminology, I’m looking for a monster LDE.

by Endzone on Sep 2, 2009 12:32 PM MDT reply actions

The only trade I see happeing at the moment

involving BMarshall is with the local lumber yard to get more pine for him to sit on. That’s just how I feel about that at the moment.

But, on a more serious note I’d like to see us pick up a LDE with some wheels and strength to push to Oline to the side. Just not sure anyone would be willing to give up a player like that. I do think Ayers progresses into that, but probably not until late in the season or even into next year.

by bchiper on Sep 2, 2009 12:52 PM MDT reply actions

Ayers

I’ve only noticed Ayers at RDE backing up Doom. Is he playing LDE now in place of Reid?

by Endzone on Sep 2, 2009 12:57 PM MDT up reply actions

Absolutely

A lot of guys who won’t make the team will be playing Thursday. I’m not saying Moss and Crowder don’t, but they are currently not running with the 1st stringers. Thursday’s game is not about winning…it’s about evaluating.

by Endzone on Sep 2, 2009 1:03 PM MDT up reply actions

No you are correct

he’s spent the pre season behind Doom. I just think as he develops you could be moved over in front of Reid.

by bchiper on Sep 2, 2009 1:06 PM MDT up reply actions

Reid

Reid is an NFL player and I’m glad we got him. He just seems weak in the passing game. Ayers could very well be the guy to step in at that position. Or move Doom over there if Ayers can step in to Doom’s spot.

by Endzone on Sep 2, 2009 1:08 PM MDT up reply actions

After reading about the 5-2...

If we are going to stay with the 5-2 defense, I would like another athletic linebacker to play next to DJ. A LDE would also be a solid addition to the defense.

by Ramblin'man on Sep 2, 2009 1:00 PM MDT reply actions

For Marshall

Are you saying that you would trade Marshall for an athletic linebacker (assuming DJ is fine at WLB that you’re looking for a SLB?) or LDE? Not another WR?

by Endzone on Sep 2, 2009 1:06 PM MDT up reply actions

Not a linebacker.

I cannot think of a SLB that would be worth Marshall, but a LDE could possibly be worth it. None come to mind. (As a note, I missed the entirety of last season, so I am a little out of the loop on young up and coming players in the NFL.) I think our defense is going to be alright for the season and if there were to be a trade for Marshall, a receiver would definitely need to be included at this point.

by Ramblin'man on Sep 2, 2009 1:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Did you watch some of the games last year?

Most of the time Brandon was either double teamed or triple teamed, and that openned up all the room in the world for Royal & Stokes.

Imagine if Royal was double or triple teamed? No other receivers to throw it to. All the other receivers are a joke. No chance they will be any good. Maybe 20-25 catches.

We need Brandon back, if not him then another big time number one receiver.
