Potent Quotables - After Practice 9/2 - Josh McDaniels
On if the Broncos are ready for Thursday’s game against Arizona
"We crammed everything we could cram into two days. You kind of see what your guys are capable of learning real fast because there are some new little things that we have to do based on what they do. Our guys adapted well to it in the last two days."
On trimming the roster to 53 players
"(General Manager) Brian (Xanders) and I will obviously talk with the staff. We have been talking all of training camp. I don’t think it is good business to wait until the very end and then try to make a whole bunch of huge decisions at the end. We have been trying to evaluate that process ongoing. It is never easy to go through that from our end. I have let players go throughout the year this year, and that is never a fun experience because they come out here and they work hard. You kind of get attached to them. It is not going to be something that I look forward to. I can tell you that much. I am sure there is no coach that looks forward to telling players that they have to be released. It is part of this game. We have to do it, and we are going to try to assemble the best 53 guys we can."
On how players’ performances in Thursday’s game against Arizona will factor into personnel decisions
"In some circumstances, it certainly will play a role. Everything that they are doing on the field tomorrow, we have a purpose for it for them to be out there, and they are going to play like they have a purpose. We are not taking anything for granted. We are going to look at every player. There certainly are a lot of things that could come into place (with personnel decisions) based on injuries and all kinds of other things that you need to make sure that you evaluate everybody properly. That is what we are going to do tomorrow, and they are going to play like that."
On missing several players due to injury
"I am not glad we have injuries. Nobody is. I am hopeful that we will field the healthiest team that we can field next week when we go to Cincinnati, and I am hopeful that a lot of the guys that have missed periods of time during the course of training camp and then lately will be also ready to go. That is kind of where I stand on that. I can’t guarantee one thing or another, and I certainly don’t want to put expectations on players in terms of injury rehabilitation that aren’t attainable. We hope we can take the healthiest 53-man roster to Cincinnati, and the guys that haven’t been here, we look forward to having them back soon."
On trade rumors regarding WR Brandon Marshall
"There are no discussions whatsoever taking place between the Denver Broncos and any team in the National Football League regarding Brandon Marshall. We are looking forward to having Brandon back on the sixth of September and starting our preparation for Cincinnati with him."
On RB Knowshon Moreno’s status
"Knowshon is doing better every day. I am not sure if we are going to play him tomorrow. He would be capable of playing, but I am not exactly sure if that is the smartest decision. We are going to talk about that here in a few minutes. (We are) taking all of the information into account and making sure we do the smart thing for the player and make sure that we are ready to go next week."
On if the starters will play in Thursday’s game against Arizona
"Our guys are going to play. (The starters) are not going to play into the second half or anything like that, but there are some things that we want to do better than what we have done. There are some little things that we want to make sure we go out there and try to accomplish. Everybody that plays tomorrow is going to understand the purpose for them being out on the field, and we have a purpose to try to accomplish some things that we want to get done and see tomorrow. We are looking forward to it. We are excited. It is kind of neat that you don’t have to wait too long to play another game. You play one Sunday night and turn around and three days later, you are getting ready to have the night-before-the-game meeting tonight. They will play. They will play tomorrow."
On his goals for Thursday’s game against Arizona
"We want to improve on some of the things that we did poorly last week. Offensively, we would love to come out of the game with no penalties and no turnovers. Defensively, we did some good things last week in the running game (but) gave up a big two-minute drive, so it would be nice to get into a two-minute situation and play the situation better than we have played it the last two games because Seattle and Chicago both scored on us before the half. There are a lot of little things like that that we are looking forward to trying to improve upon and get better at. We will see which ones come up tomorrow night."
On how much QB Tom Brandstater will play in Thursday’s game against Arizona
"He will play a long time."

Potent Potables for 500 Alex...
I’m glad Knowshon is practicing again. I think we will be a much better team with him on the field.
It will be interesting to get a good long look at Tommy B during this preseason game. Hopefully he continues to perform.
I don’t think BMarsh is going anywhere this season unless someone offers 1st and a 3rd… and that is not going to happen.
I hope we don't play Moreno.
No need to risk him.

Him not playing is a given.
We need him more in Cincinnati

Oh absolutely, I wasn't suggesting playing Knowshon this week
I was simply refering to the start of the season. There is absolutely no reason to play him this week.

Is it just me?
I’m actually starting to like McDaniels. His answers seem pretty straightforward to me.

I get the same feeling firstfan.
He really is a no nosense guys, except maybe on how he handles info concerning injuries and I think he does that to give thopposition as little info as possible. I wonder how the gamblers in Vegas feel about that.
If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

And you've got to think that as he grows in confidence and experience
he’s going to become more likable rather than less. He’s certainly gotten the quick baptism by fire. If he manages to build a team by the end of the year that is playing competitive football against the best teams in the league, after all he’s been through, he’ll have a bright future.

I have a feeling he does it as a joke...
Yes it is designed to give as little info as possible but I wouldn’t doubt if he and the other coaches sat down and said what’s the most ridiculous thing we can say when describing an injury…“Upper Extremity!” I bet they’re getting a good chuckle out of that one.

He is vague with his injury reports
but I honestly think he doesn’t disclose that information because of a perceived competitive dis-advantage to releasing and describing injuries. Whether or not that is true or not can be debated, but in the off chance it is, I would rather be play it on the safe side.
Xanders
For the doubters, I love this:
“(General Manager) Brian (Xanders) and I will obviously talk with the staff. We have been talking all of training camp. I don’t think it is good business to wait until the very end and then try to make a whole bunch of huge decisions at the end. We have been trying to evaluate that process ongoing.”
I never heard Shanahan say that he and the Goodman’s were working together.
Shannahan
was the Denver Czar. take that as a negative or a positive, but thats why you never heard him say that lol. I still wish he had relinquished some power a few years ago in the personell selection….then he might still be with us today……ah the days of sharing a malt, and going to a movie, and spending the evening with our beloved coach……………..uh……..um………
GO BRONCS!!!! 13-3 until we aren’t!

1st String
I’m a little surprised the 1st stringers will play. But also glad to hear that they will be working on the little things.
Not to harp too much, but how about getting a win
I understand that it is preseason, but I still want a win, we haven’t had a winless preseason for 50 years.

I could care less
I don’t care if we win or lose as long as the team learns, the coaches can evaluate and determine which players need improvement, which players to keep and cut, and that everyone comes out of the game healthy.

With you on that one
I couldn’t care less. Despite the two steps forwards and one back at the moment I am still optimistic. This teams need to grow and be molded. It is just going to take time.

I know what you mean
but remember that the Lions went undefeated in preseason a couple of years ago I believe and their season didn’t turn out to well. And there have been other teams who have gone winless in preseason and ended up having solid years. Not saying it lways means nothing, and psychologically it would be nice for them to get a win, but otherwise, you hit reboot when the real season starts and those are the games that matter.
A lot of teams also hide many of their bells and whistles on offense, keep things close to the vest for the regular season so it’s really hard to know.

Job interviews
are so hard. I can’t imagine the pressure a lot of these men are feeling as this final pre-season game nears. I would like to see Darius Walker win a job for the offense, and I would love to see the defense play [quote Herm Edwards] to win the game. The pre-season may not mean anything in terms of wins and losses, but is is at the center of everything for lots of the men on the Broncos squad right now and it’s time our team started playing as if they care about the outcome.
The last quote made laugh hard!
Come on Brandstater! The boss liked what he saw last week and wants to see if it was a fluke! Broncos 34, Cardinals 13 baby!

Wow...
There are no discussions whatsoever taking place between the Denver Broncos and any team in the National Football League regarding Brandon Marshall.
That’s amazingly unequivocal and specific for McD.
I’m really surprised that he didn’t stonewall that question.
I wonder if this means that he’s received some communication from Marshall that he’s planning to return and shape up, or if it’s just more posturing…

mm hmm
Same thought I had. Hope he means it this time.

Glad to hear
There isn’t much point in talking to anyone right now as Marshall’s value is lower than ever before. Much better to wait and see if he gets it through his head that he must shape up and play football if he hopes to be paid this year, and if he wants to make more than league minimum next year. Plus, as we are not going to get anything close to full value at this point I think we hand him a shovel and let him keep digging a hole to bury his career, if he wants to continue on the path he has chosen so far.

How many of you are as excited as I am...
to see Tom at QB for a full game? I am stoked for that!
Sure he’s a rookie, and all that but he has had the same amount of time to learn a brand new system as everyone else has and Coach thinks he’s doing a good job of it.
I thought that he looked good Suday night, for as little time as he has had during a real game, and the throw down the side lines for a TD sure put a smile on my face.
Is it just me, or does any one else here think that Tom has the strongest arm on the team right now?
It is better to keep silent, and appear to be wise, then to ramble on and remove all doubt! The Wisest Man, Solomon.
I still back Josh..
Remember Jay said ‘if you get rid of Jeremy, then just trade me". And Josh’s answer was “we are not trading Jay” and that was while he posed with the 6 throwback jersey. Nah Zappa, I still think Josh has it right.
A first rounder will not help Josh win, Brandon Marshall will. Will he this year, I do not know, but am hopeful.
Rumor
I’ve heard the rumor that Jay wanted a trade when Bates was fired. I’ve not seen any credible reports to support it though. I think that is just another urban rumor. But I do believe that coupled with Shanahan’s firing were the roots for his eventual trade demand.
Remember Roethlisberger ..
He was third string until Maddox and Batch got hurt. Big Ben never gave up the starter label after that. Hum do you believe in miracles or just have Orange and Blue glasses?
WOW
I’m SO trying to soak in the positive vibes from you koolaid drunks (affectionately) here! Some body pass me a cup. More power running scheme & no QB, now? Saying we won’t trade BM sounds good but familiar…
(
Let’s say the staff we currently employ goes back in time and picks up Moss from the Raiders…. Would he be the WR the Pats currently have? …or would he be the guy the Raiders couldn’t make use of? Would he be Brandon Marshall?
)
Interesting choice of words
“There are no discussions whatsoever taking place between the Denver Broncos and any team in the National Football League regarding Brandon Marshall.”
I wonder if McD is thinking about trading him to the UFL?
People can use statistics to prove anything, 87% of all people know that.
