A Kyle Orton Rant

I'm getting real tired of the Kyle Orton is a dog comments.

And the "Let's start Simms or Brandstater" posts.

And the "He Couldn't beat out Rex Grossman"  drizzle...  It is getting really old.

I'm tired of the  "Orton has a noodle arm" talk

and the "He can't throw the deep ball"  talk

and the "He only won because of Chicago's Defense." talk

I'm tired of the "Let's trade for Quinn, or Anderson, or Leinart, or Thigpin, or any other freakin QB in the NFL except for Orton" talk.

With all due respect... Who taught you to say these things...

Do you take everything Jamie Dukes says as gospel?

Do you actually repeat everything you hear on ESPN?

Kyle Orton is a Quarterback in the National Football League.  Who in the world thinks that a QB... playing professional football... a starter with a 21-12 record...would suck and be unable to throw the ball.  Seriously Folks.

There must be a reason why this guy is a starter in the NFL, and it probably isn't because he could only throw the ball 10 yards deep.  The boy can play QB... and he has proven that he can lead his team to victory.  Who wouldn't trade his winning percentage for Jay Cutlers right now.

Why in the world do you think that having a "strong arm" and being able to throw the ball 70 yards, is the single ingredient to being a good NFL QB.  If that is all you are looking for in a QB, go root for the Raiders... Jamarcus the Hutt has got a cannon.

Those of you who refuse to cheer Kyle Orton on are acting more childish than Brandon Marshall at his last practice.  You have condemned the guy before he has even played a single regular season game in the Orange and Blue.  Seriously... it is getting old.

Is KO the next John Elway?  Nope.  and I hate to break it to you Bronco fans, but there isn't going to be another John Elway either.  You can stop waiting.  There was one #7... and only one.

Does KO have the arm strength that John Elway had?  Nope.  And neither does any NFL QB... and that includes you Mr. Cutler.

But don't get dupped into thinking that John Elway was a HOF QB just because he had a supernatural arm.  It takes more than that to be a winner, and we all know that because we watched #7 play.

I don't know how Kyle Orton is going to play this year.  He could be absolutely horrible.  He also could be absolutely amazing.  The deal is, you really don't know.  I think that an objective opinion is that he will play very well and run the offense efficiently and effectively.  Why?  Because that is exactly what he has done in the past.

So those of you blabbing on and on about how we should have kept our first rounder next year so we could have snagged Tim Tebow or some other "Franchise" QB... pppppaaaaaa - llleeeaazzzz - give it a rest.

and give your starting QB a chance.

I still think he is going to surprise people. I get so tired of the NFLN idiots. For guys that are supposed to know football they sure don’t talk like it. They report their opinion as gospel truth and don’t research anything.

BTW I agree with Blackhills you took the words right out of my mouth also

thanks for teh "rant"

But not Bradford or McCoy. Or probably 5 or 6 other qbs that will come out next year. Or, hopefully for us, maybe even Brandstater. McD will get massive kudos from me if Brandstater turns out to be a steal.

I'm rooting for Kyle Orton

and I really don’t care how many yards he throws for, or even touchdowns for that matter. He just needs to put our team in position to win football games.

He has my full support and I hope he proves all the haters (DPost/ ESPN commentors) wrong.

I highly doubt that guy goes far in the NFL. He doesn’t play pro style football—not yet anyways.

Orton is the Denver Broncos QB if he goes down i’m going down with him. I love the Broncos and I love our QB, Orton will do fine and a lot of people will have to eat their words. I’m taking names, so all you Orton haters think before you speak, and if you like Cuntler after what he did to us than root for the Bears cause you’re no bronco fan.

Or we see...

A tentative QB, with happy feet that has not been allowed to throw the ball more than 10 yards. And the fact that he gets a pass on his four INTs? Ridiculous. This Schadenfreude at this board would reach epic proportions if Cutler threw that many with the bears because of the “ingrained” hatred of him.

by Bob in Boulder on Sep 3, 2009 9:07 AM MDT reply actions

Don't believe that...

sure… there are a lot of guys excited about Culter there, but there were a lot of KO fans there too. His entire team seemed to believe in him and love him as a player and leader. How can you dump on a guy with a 21-12 record…

by RevrendBronco on Sep 3, 2009 9:12 AM MDT up reply actions

WCG

I’ve spent a little time over at WCG and found that 99% of them support Orton. They feel that Cutler is an upgrade, but they still like Orton. They feel that Orton was inaccurate on the long ball but attributed a lot of that on their own Oline inability to protect Orton and give him more time to throw. No Bob. WCG folks like Orton a lot.

by Endzone on Sep 3, 2009 12:03 PM MDT up reply actions

The 21-12 record argument

is about as circular as they come. The Bears had a run-first offense, a good defense, and a great special teams threat to get that 21-12 record. And part of the rational behind trading Cutler for an obvious downgrade (2 1st and a 3rd versus a 5th downgrade) was that the QB isn’t that important, right? Yet to defend Orton, everyone sites HIS record, as if he’s primarily responsible for it? It’s more Chewbaca. It does not make any sense.

The last 12 SB Winning QBs

Roethlisberger, E. Manning, P. Manning, Roethlisberger, T. Brady, T. Brady, B. Johnson, T. Brady, K. Warner, T. Dilfer, J. Elway, J. Elway.

Two of those QBs, Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer I would consider to be “Orton-esque”. The other 10 (repeats of course)? Hall of Famers. Johnson had the benefit of his team knowing every play called by the Raiders, due to Gruden having coached there the previous year. The genius Bill Callahan decided not to change a thing. Trent Dilfer had one of the most dominant defenses in history when he played for Baltimore.

Don’t tell me you win super bowls with average QBs— only 2 of the most dominant defensive teams in the last twenty years have overcome shortcomings at the QB position. Yes, the Broncos defense has shown improvement, but it certainly doesn’t even have the nucleus to be historically great.

by legendarywalton on Sep 3, 2009 9:41 AM MDT reply actions

But Orton is 21-12 as a starter. And did you see that one throw of about 40 yards he made one time?

You Should Do More Research

A couple of years before Warner was bagging groceries for a living and nobody wanted to pick Brady up in the draft because he was too slow and with ‘no arm’. Brad Johnson has never been considered an ‘elite QB’.

The point is, with the right team a lot of QB can go all the way.

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. by SSMT on Sep 3, 2009 11:16 AM MDT up reply actions

Regardless of where they were in their careers

Those QBs have turned out to have a terrific pedigree. Orton has been in the league just as longer than Warner or Brady when they won their SBs and he has not shown the ability to take over a game like those two needed to in order to win.

The point is that with the right QB, a team can go a long way.

One more funny thought

Then I’m done for a while, I promise. Back in the days of Griese, when his welcome started to wear thin, someone on the Fan decided to tag defenders of Griese as DOGs. Man is this place ever full of ……

;)

Just having fun and expressing my opinion. I hope Kyle proves me wrong. He hasn’t yet, but it has only been preseason.

Did I say I was done?

I still am, sort of. I decided to do a little research on our new qb to see what WCG folks really do think of Kyle by adding a fanpost and a poll. I was pretty careful to make the poll and lead in to it as unbiased as possible. However, to see the results I did need to vote. Hopefully enough folks will vote to the point where my vote won’t mean DOO by the end of the day.

So far

Overwhelmingly an average NFL qb and a game manager. I wonder if I would have been better off leaving out the descriptions in the answers altogether? Maybe some people would see “game manager” as less than average … more of a put down? Don’t know. Live and learn, I guess. Nobody has put him in the top 10 (and I stretched it to 10 to give him a chance). Only 2 people (and I was not one of them) have said he isn’t a starter in the NFL. And a smattering of folks think he is either above average or below average.

So, essentially, we’ve gone from a top 5 qb (according to DJ Williams) to an average game manager. Color me excited.

Some of the comments were also interesting (good often accompanying bad):

The good:

- he is very good at the short passing game ….. (snipped bad) ….. but he usually makes good decisions
- He is an intellegent QB
- he can win with a good defense and running game
- but he can chuck it pretty far
- but he wins over his teammates, he plays hard and he is capable of making plays to win games
- Orton may not lose you too many games,
- he is smart and makes good decisions

The bad:

- He has some trouble with Deep Ball accuracy
- if you get involved in a shoot out Kyle is not your man
- his physical skills limit his overall performance
- If you quickly find youreself down by 10-14 points, you might want to see if your wife has any projects around the house
- he is the master of the Dump off screen on third and forever
- but he’s not real accurate after 25 yards
- I don’t think Denver is a place that he’ll do particularly well unless the defense really steps it up
- Orton’s best passing performances have always come against the Lions. He’s not talented enough to regularly extend the play or make things happen when things break down. And the inaccuracy of his deep throws will drive you nuts.

You're trying too hard
give it a rest. and give your starting QB a chance.

Um, no. Why? Because I’ve seen him play. I watched him in Chicago, and now I have watched him in his limited time in Denver and have been so underwhelmed as to wonder how he got drafted. Not once have I seen him put a team on his back and carry them. Not once have I seen him take a busted play and make something out of nothing. He is 100% dependent on those around him making him look good, rather than the other way around.

And yes, his record is due to the defense in Chicago. See the reasons above.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted and then used against you.

by improv88 on Sep 3, 2009 1:17 PM MDT reply actions

Different system, different team, different league, different city.

I don’t really believe Ron Turner is the greatest offensive coach to ever stride the side lines, so I would give Kyle a break until he shows different and 3 preseason games in a new scheme isn’t enough time to really rate anything there Bears fan.

by bfree2bronc on Sep 3, 2009 1:27 PM MDT up reply actions

And yet...

With the same offensive coordinator, offensive weapons and same O-line (Pace was a waste of space), Cutler came in and had a level of success in a single half that Orton never achieved. (Yes, I know it was preseason)

I agree that Turner is not the shiniest model on the showroom floor – I’m not sure he can spell “creativity” – but great players can flourish in almost any situation.

And I am not now, nor have I ever been a Bears fan – I seriously resent that remark.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted and then used against you.

by improv88 on Sep 3, 2009 1:33 PM MDT up reply actions

improv88 I have to quibble with one of your statements:
With the same offensive coordinator, offensive weapons and same O-line (Pace was a waste of space), Cutler came in and had a level of success in a single half that Orton never achieved. (Yes, I know it was preseason)

This statement would appear to be not completely accurate. I’m restricting my quibble to preseason games, since that is the example that you have used.

I’m assuming you’re basing your evaluation of Cutler on his 15 out of 21 for 144 yards with 1 TD and 0 INTs. This gives Cutler a rating of 106.0 for that performance.

In 2008, in the preseason, Orton played the 1st half of the third preseason game against San Francisco. In that game, Orton went 10 out of 15 for 147 yards with 2 TDs and 0 INTs. This gives Orton a rating of 138.0 for that performance.

In 2007, in the preseason, Orton played the 2nd half of the game against Houston. Orton went 16 of 25 for 151 yards with 1 TD and 0 INTs.

In 2005, in the preseason, Orton played only the 4th quarter against Miami. He went 7 of 11 for 175 yards with 1 TD and 0 INTs. (And yes I know that Orton played in the 3rd quarter of this game. He played one series and threw 2 incomplete passes).

So, I fail to be able to agree that Cutler “had a level of success in a single half that Orton never achieved.”

Did Cutler outplay Orton in Denver last week? Without a doubt. But it is the sweeping generalizations about Orton’s ineptitude which I would debate. When we compare Cutler’s 2009 half, to Orton’s 2008, the claim that Orton has never done so well is, put simply, false.
