Horse Tracks 9/20/09 - Honoring Big Play Shay

Shannon-sharpe-655x350_mediumvia static.nfl.com

DB - Recognizing a Legend - Zach Eisendrath
Shannon Sharpe will become the 22nd member of the Broncos Ring of Fame today at halftime. Several Broncos greats were in attendance Friday night to honor Shannon at the annual Alumni Reunion Dinner. Accompanying video features footage from the evening's festivities and reporting by Chris Hall.

DPP - Broncos to honor Sharpe's career - Jeff Legwold

LTC - Broncos to honor Sharpe - Brian Howell

DB - Matchup: Broncos vs. Browns - Broncos TV
Chris Hall previews today's home opener with plenty of sound clips.

DB - A Closer Look: Cleveland Browns - Gray Caldwell

DB - Seven Broncos on H.O.F Preliminary List - Kyle Sonneman
Six Broncos legends, plus one guy who couldn't be bothered to get off the field fast enough during the 1996 AFC Divisional Playoff game made the list; 25 semifinalists will be chosen from the 131 names and announced on November 27th. Personally, I'm hoping to see Shannon and Little inducted; if they are, I'll be there. Three Broncos at once is surely asking too much...

DPP - Quiet anchor has Louisiana spark: NT Ronald Fields - Lindsay Jones
Fields shares plenty of insight into his life; it's hard not to become a Ronnie Fields fan after reading this. His parents were displaced by Katrina and Fields couldn't get in touch with them to assure their safety for a WEEK. He says every play as a nose tackle feels like being in a car crash, and he watches Family Guy. Plus, he says his primer on living in CO came via South Park!

DPP - Stokley's sons sink roots deep into football lifestyle - Mike Klis
Klis offers up an extensive profile on The Slot Machine. Excellent read.

DP - Krieger: Belichick lineage sure winner today
There will be plenty of former Patriots coaches roaming the sidelines today.

DP - Drown them out with foot-stomping music - Mark Kiszla
Great idea. Folks, if you're heading to the game put on some cowboy or steel-toed boots today and make some NOISE!!!!!

NFL - Injury Reports
Spencer Larsen and Le Kevin Smith are Out, while Josh Barrett and Chris Kuper are Questionable. Boy, having Kuper start would be a huge boost for the Broncos.

Star-divide

DPP - Q&A: What's the scoop on QB drops? - Jeff Legwold
Kyle Orton is a sack machine. Wow.

CSG - Broncos defense improving in a hurry - Frank Schwab

CSG - Broncos 50th Anniversary: 10 best plays - Frank Schwab
Proud to say I witnessed both #4 and #5 in person. Which ones were you present for?

DP - Klis: Muscles may stiffen at 30, but so does resolve
Klis writes that Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens are "mellowing". He must be joking.

AP - Broncos looking for more magic - Arnie Stapleton

DPP - Analysis: Stokley could stoke Gus Johnson's career - Mike Klis

NFL News

NFL Opinion

NFP - Sunday at the Post - Mike Lombardi
Lombardi thinks a loss for the Browns today could blow up the front office and locker room. He echoes what everyone's been discussing on MHR this week; Denver needs to play "keep away" with Josh Cribbs.

DPP - Week 2 must-see: Patriots against Jets - Jeff Legwold

NFP - Weekend Notes: The Jets take on Brady - Matt Bowen

NFP - On the Road, Part 2 - Jack Bechta

FOX - Countdown: Previewing all of Week 2's games - John Czarnecki
Again, lots on the FOX games and very little on the others. This ticks me off and I think I may omit this from future Tracks. Any objections?

ESPN - 10 Spot: It's all about the quarterbacks - Adam Schefter

I don’t think anyone would complain about you decided to take something away from what you put on here, it is a gift for all of us that you do it to begin with.

A truth can only be expressed and enveloped in words if it is one-sided. Everything that is thought and expressed in words is one-sided, only half the truth; it all lacks totality, completeness, unity.

There should be an "all of the above" choice

I chose the 3rd down catch against the Steelers since it sealed our trip to our first SB championship. I also like all the other choice and have a foamhead myself. Shannon Sharpe was simply the best and most entertaining TE EVER and I am glad to see he will be in the ring of fame. After today the HOF is next.

Congratulations to Shannon

Just looking at the names on that ring makes you appreciate what a big deal it is. Fully deserved.

I voted the National Guard one… always a favourite.

Thanks NYC!

Jamal Williams out for the season? The window is rapidly closing on the Dolts. They have been regressing each year and it looks like that trend is going to continue. The AFC West crown is there for the taking! It’s time to bring the division championship back to it’s rightful home! Go Broncos!

People can use statistics to prove anything, 87% of all people know that.

You and Stu have a great time at the game today.

so

definitely if we compare Cutler with excellent o-line in Denver to Orton with terrible o-line in Chicago, we definitely have removed all variables, allowing us to compare sack totals, right?

by poorboywilly on Sep 20, 2009 9:41 AM MDT reply actions

if you want to do assinine things with statistics

Then do this: extrapolate Cutler’s two sacks taken in the first game to a 16 game schedule…32 sacks expected, then extrapolate passing attempts (36) as well, for 576 expected passing attempts this season. That means he is expected to be sacked once every 18 dropbacks. Curiously similar to Orton’s total from last year, however meaningless due to sample size.

by poorboywilly on Sep 20, 2009 9:46 AM MDT up reply actions

Well, the Broncos’ offensive scheme is also completely different from last year…

I think my favorite Sharp moment was when he talked the Broncos through a win against the Chiefs, culminating with so enraging a Chief’s defender (Derrick Thomas?) that he grabbed Sharpe by the visor and threw him to the ground. I would dearly love to see a clip of that again.

I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok.

That was a Monday Night game, and I’m pretty sure Sharpe drew as many as 3 personal fouls from Thomas. It was a bizarre moment, really…

by Douglas A. Lee on Sep 20, 2009 11:54 AM MDT up reply actions

Yes!

Sharpe got the guy over and over again, and I was laughing hystericaly. I couldn’t believe the Chiefs’ coach wouldn’t pull the guy out!

lol

I think it was Wayne Simmons, not Thomas...

…or the other Simmons brother. Dude got released the next day he made such a rear of himself.

“Sharpe and Thomas had several memorable battles in the 1990s as AFC West enemies with the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. As a tight end, Sharpe worked against Thomas, an outside linebacker, several times. In a famous “Monday Night Football” clash, Sharpe goaded Thomas into losing his cool, resulting in the superstar pass rusher being suspended for a game after three personal fouls. Sharpe was fined for his actions in the game."

Rec'd

That was my favorite moment, and the one that came right to mind.

My favorite moment wasn't listed.

But the Pats one was terribly funny!

My favorite was when the Broncos drove down the field because Sharpe kept taunting an opposing player and the guy would rush of the line of scrimmage after Sharpe before the snap. The refs kept calling penalties, and the opposing coach was too stupid to pull the player. I think it was against the Chiefs. Anyone else remember that one?
