Horse Tracks 9/21/09 - Broncos defeat Browns 27-6

Horse_tracks_new_logo_medium

Well, the Broncos are 2/3 of the way to meeting John Clayton's predicted win total for the season, and it only took them two weeks to get there. The defense was again stifling; up next are the Raiders, who managed 166 yards of offense versus the Chefs but came away with a victory somehow. Elvis Dumervil racked up 4 sacks and forced a fumble. The last time the Broncos won by three touchdowns or more? The 2008 opener in Jokeland. Last time they forced 5 turnovers over two games? November of 2007, when they had 11 takeaways in three games. Shannon Sharpe parachuted his way into The Big IF, but I couldn't find video of the halftime ceremony inducting him to the Ring of Fame. If anyone finds it, please share the link!

NFL Results

NFL - Oakland Raiders 13 at Kansas City Chiefs 10
JaMarcus The Hutt was 7-for-24 with 109 yards passing in "leading" Jokeland's offense to 166 total yards. No Raiders rushed for more than 35 yards or caught more than 28 yards of passes. Jokeland allowed 2 sacks but no turnovers. Matt Cassel threw 2 INTs and took 2 sacks as the Chefs racked up 409 yards of fruitless offense.

NFL - Baltimore Ravens 31 at San Diego Chargers 26
The Ravens barely hung on to beat the hobbled Dolts, who were missing LDT and Jamal Williams. Baltimore forced the Dolts to kick four FGs of 29 yards and shorter. Philip Rivers racked up 436 yards passing and 2 TDs, with big receiving days for Vincent Jackson and Darren Sproles. Joe Flacco had 2 TD passes and Willis McGahee rushed for another 2.

Thanks, NYC

Lots of links to revel in today.

Lookin ahead, I have a bad feeling about the Jokeland game. I have no doubt the ‘06-’08 Broncos would have laid an egg in it — showing up unprepared for winnable games was just part of their M. O. If they play as hard next week as the last two, I’ll be convinced something has changed in Dove Valley.

by Chibronx on Sep 21, 2009 7:45 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Did you see J-Bust Russell yesterday? And Robert Gallery broke his leg and is out for eight weeks. I hope Denver puts nine in the box, double coverage for Miller and leaves Bailey and Goodman on islands to shut down Hey Bey Bey and L Murphy.

I’m just pissed we have to play on that dirt infield and worry about the possible injuries from running around on a high school caliber baseball field.

Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.

by McGeorge on Sep 21, 2009 8:10 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

LIke I've been saying about Oakland....

….between worrying about getting cold-cocked by the coach and eaten by the quarterback, I expect the players to play hard.

In all seriousness, I know Gallery’s out and that Russell is Russel. They can run, though, and I’m generally impressed by the D-line and secondary. I’m just saying they’re not quite the pushovers I’d expected.

by Chibronx on Sep 21, 2009 8:18 AM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

When you draft in the Top 10 (and high in all the other rounds) for what seems like a decade, you’re bound to get a few picks somewhat right.

Huff looks like a real NFL player all of a sudden. Gallery is a solid OG and McFadden is an above average RB. But they had no business winning their game yesterday. I don’t see Denver outgaining them 400-170 in yards and still managing to lose. Thank god Matt Cassel is not our QB. I’ve said from day one that I wouldn’t trade Orton for Cassel straight up. If KC called today and offered that trade, I’d hope McDaniels would have the sense to hang up.

Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.

Oakland got a gift win

Frankly, I just don’t understand the KC coaching. The Chiefs should have won that game by 20 points.

I agree with you, McGeorge, about committing to stop the run. But I don’t think we’ll need 9 in the box to do it. We have to protect the edges first and foremost against McFadden, but if Davis and the line continue to play like they’ve been playing, I think the front 7 can handle the Oakland o-line and stop Bush much like they did Benson and Lewis. A number of well-timed blitzes could easily lead to a couple interceptions.

I don’t see Bailey or Goodman being beaten by receivers who aren’t great route runners, so the safeties should take away the TE.

Oakland’s D looks pretty good, but if they try to play man like they did most of the game against San Diego, they’ll be eaten alive, in my opinion.

by JeffG on Sep 21, 2009 8:51 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oakland’s man defense looks pretty good, but they make mistakes when the attempt zone coverage

i’m looking for the broncos to spread it out next week with a lot of 4 and 5 WR sets

Yikes.

I like how Peter King managed to throw a bronco comment in the end finally, saying that dumervil is unorthodox but did good in the game

I was very encouraged by yesterday’s game. Cleveland is no doubt a crappy team, but we kicked the crap out of them.

Our freaking D is…. I don’t even have the words. I just clap and yell at my TV all game because I’m so excited about everything I’m seeing. It’s not one or two things, it’s everything that looks better. A LOT better. Mike Nolan = coach of the week (again).

Orton is improving. 9 for 24 in the first half scary, but he does protected the ball and didn’t take dumb sacks. I’m sure he can’t wait for that stupid glove to come off.

The running game got going and B Marshall made a few nice plays.

I’m still worried about Prater. Huge leg, but weak stomach. The guy misses too many important kicks and his misses come in bunches. If Denver is behind 21-23 to Dallas and Prater is lining up for the game winning 42 yard FG with three seconds left, I don’t have much confidence that he makes it. If he has already missed a kick earlier in that game, I have no confidence in him.

Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.

I say take a few delay of games and back him up to about 52 yards.

Not to make excuses

But those two kicks were literally blown outside the uprights.

Wind was gusting up to 40 MPH.

Re: our defense. I’m still a little worried about inconsistent pressure and a soft middle of the field in the passing game, but there’s no doubt that we are far better on D than most people thought we’d be. We are committed to taking away the up front running game. Which means we’ll take our chances with our secondary — which is very good. This strategy gets Woodyard, A. Smith (and perhaps Barrett, soon) onto the field more.

I like it.

Offensively, we’ve managed to win 2 games with an inconsistent running game, with a nearly absent Marshall, and with a QB with a bad digit.

Once Orton and his receivers get on the same page — and Moreno gets going more consistently — this is going to be a dangerous offense, not least for their ability to take time off the clock and keep our defense fresh.

So far, the plan is working.

Royal has been more absent than BM and Eddie had another drop yesterday. It’s somewhat vexing because Eddie looked great in preseason.

Eddie’s only been targeted 13 times so far through 2 games. He’s only caught 5 of those. While poor, he doesn’t have any official drops…

Eddie was not well yesterday

Not on the sidelines because he was getting fluids during the 3rd quarter. He’s been fine on outs and screens. I don’t feel worried.

by dr.mort on Sep 21, 2009 12:07 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

he's worrying me

not just the fact that he’s not getting open (i “blame” that on BM not taking the focus of the defense’s attention), but the fact that royal doesn’t seem to be “getting it done” in all aspects of his game. in the sense that hillis last year seemed to somehow always be clutch, royal is on the opposite path. he slips at inopportune times, he lets a short punt roll inside the 10, he tries to pull a BM and reverses field and almost gets caught going backwards on another punt return, he seems more fragile, he doesn’t quite pull in the diving catch, etc.

hope it’s not a sophomore slump.

If you'll go back and listen to Teds post

He states (and I noticed this to be factual), that the Browns have very good coverage, even when they Zone blitz. Also, in the post I wrote from the Coach’s show, Josh made that statement himself.

I feel like the receivers have had a harder job adjusting to the new offense than Orton. Wright is good, but they were blanketed too thoroughly yesterday. I think it’s telling that Gaffney has generally looked like the best threat in this offense — he has the system experience to make up for his more modest skills.

by Chibronx on Sep 21, 2009 9:09 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

trust and smarts are clearly important in this offense

esp given orton’s arm. the gaffney pass was thrown well before he made his cut back to the QB. it’s going to take a while to get the receivers and orton on the same page consistently. makes me despair that BM will ever have an impact, since he’s not willing to put in the time to make the right reads and decisions and earn his place with orton. what a shame.

by ssc on Sep 21, 2009 11:26 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

Prater has been solid this year. So he shanked a couple in a cross wind. Let’s see how he does next week before we pile on. Just IMHO.

Thanks NYC,

I’m still disappointed in the Bronco fans who were at the game booing Orton when we were in the lead. He may not be a flashy wizbang, but he sure can get the job done and win games when it counts.

Denver has not had a real home field advantage in several years. If some of the fans are booing an offense/kicker that was pretty lethargic in the first half, it’s more noise than I hear when the opposing QB is trying to change a play. At least someone cares enough to make a sound. I bet it’s those same folks that are making the most noise when Cleveland had the ball.

Our home field advantage is the altitude and the fact that other teams are sleeping in a hotel instead of them own beds. Other than that, we don’t’ really have a home field advantage and I think that is pretty apparent when you look at our home record of the past several seasons.

Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.

Aside from 2005, the Broncos haven’t been fearsome at home since the SB years, which is a crying shame.

The last time I was there, I stomped my feet so hard I was worried I’d earned a stress fracture. Yelled until I was horse. And it just wasn’t very loud. The built environment matters. I think there’s twice as much volume in the new place as in Mile High. It’s tough to fight physics.

Class is an issue, too. Seats at the new place are awfully expensive. The more investment bankers you pack into the stadium, the more polite and restrained the crowd is. For better and for worse, my family’s nosebleeds at Mile High were surrounded by loud and angry fans. Even when I was 10, I could tell they’d had too many.

by Chibronx on Sep 21, 2009 9:00 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm horse and sore!

And the noise was pretty good up in my nose-bleed seats. But Chibronx, you hit it: almost the same number of people, minus half the stadium volume and the all-steel construction of Mile High results in less field noise. I do believe the fans have had an impact, but not nearly as much as the physics of Invesco.

The average fan

doesn’t have as much knowledge of the game as most of the people who come here and also don’t have the advantage of replay to see why (for instance) KO throws away 3 straight balls when there’s open receivers. They just see 3 incompletions, don’t take into account that Orton had no time to see an open receiver, much less throw to him – and don’t realize that it’s a good play to safely get the ball away from everyone. That’s what I try and explain to the people sitting around me when they boo early.

And while it doesn’t help Prater’s confidence to hear boos after shaking field goals, it is very frustrating to the fan, so you’re going to get groans the first time and boos the second time.

And the south standers and us nosebleeders do our best to make noise all the time – the IF just isn’t Mile High though. It is, however, still one of a very few stadiums that can cause the TV cameras to shake when the crowd gets going.

lack of knowledge but also just the broader trend

of feeling entitled, being disrespectful, etc, etc. sorry, i’ll not get on the well-worn soapbox.

as a former resident (as a kid in the 80s) but current out-of-towner who pays for sunday ticket just for broncos games: i do wish that TV broadcasts would zoom out on pass plays. it kills me not being able to see what’s happening downfield. i almost think the dated camera angle is purposeful to cause more suspense in the viewing audience (since you can’t see where the ball is headed, or what’s happening downfield, there’s more suspense at the outcome). frankly, both football and basketball broadcasts would be better with cameras positioned the length of the field/court (ie behind the QB, like a video game).

That KC piece by Whitlock on Todd Haley is one of the harshest things I’ve read in awhile. From what I saw Haley kind of deserves it but it still seemed a bit over the top. Either way, I’m glad that’s their problem.

And thanks nyc!

A little trivia for everyone...

Kyle Orton has now played two games for the Broncos, with zero turnovers. Anyone want to guess how many times Jay Cutler went two consecutive games within a single season without turning it over?

How many QBs in the NFL have more pass completions of 20+ yards than Kyle Orton? (Remember, he “can’t make the big plays”) Bonus question is how many QBs have more completions for 40+ yards than Orton?

What’s the answer. And this is going to sound dumb but listening to Dave Logan call the game over the internet he kept talking about “trips” left or right, etc. I’m assuming he was talking about 3 WR lining up on one side or the other?

yep, that’s right. or two WRs and Scheff

Thanks!

sometimes it’s a little hard to follow when you can’t see the game.

As for 20+ yard plays, Eli Manning and Philip Rivers are tied for first at 11, and Kyle is alone in third place with 9. For 40+ yard plays, Kyle is tied with 5 other QBs for second in the NFL with 2 such plays, behind Tony Romo, who has 4.

Of course, it’s a tiny sample size; but it’s still interesting to note with how Orton is characterized as not being capable of making the big play…

I thought he looked great yesterday. Both Gaffney and Stokley broke off a lot of YAC, but still, the throws were right on the money and he gave them a chance to take advantage of the defense.

Orton looked MUCH improved, in only one week. The happy feet are practically gone, and I didn’t see him throwing behind any receivers this week. Get the glove off, and get some more experience under the belt, and Orton will be doing just fine. I’m 100% in his corner after these first two games.

I was talking about this yesterday...

With a fellow fan who’s an Orton hater. I am tired of hearing how Orton can’t throw the deep ball. Not only is it a myth, it isn’t necessarily relevant. How Ken Stabler 80 yard bombs do we really see McDaniels calling up each week? Seems to me Orton can toss that meatball every bit as far as is necessary and his stats back that up. I am not going to sit here and say Orton is the future of the Broncos but he’s tough, smart, disciplined and despite his flaws is willing to work hard to correct them.

We could be a lot worse off. Its not like we have a Grossman or Orlovsky taking snaps. Orton looks better every week and IMO seems poised to have a solid year.

Looks like there's a video on Sharpe's speach on DB

Can’t watch it at work it’s blocked

it was pretty weak that they didn't broadcast it on TV

i thought it very awkward that they invited sharpe in the booth after halftime, but didn’t televise even a portion of his speech.

Anyone surprised that John Clayton's

Last Call: Wrapping up Week 2 has nary a mention of the Broncos? (Unless you count the little sidebar links which aren’t him, I suspect.) I wonder when he’ll realize they exist… perhaps when they surpass his predicted win total.

he's not surpised

didn’t he say explicitly that the broncs could start 3-0, and he’d still expect them to end up 3-8? so no biggie for johnny.

If the Broncos start 3-0

they would have to lose their last 13 games in a row for Clayton to be right. I will go to Clayton’s house and sing Italian Opera to him if that happens. If it doesn’t. I look forward to his admitting he was a fool.

i don't know if he said 3-13

i only read the bit about losing the next 8. i don’t read clayton carefully, since i share the opinion of most MHR readers that he’s an armchair analyst who doesn’t deserve his position. the exact opposite of mike mayock.

Here are his predictions

John Clayton 2009 predictions, including Denver’s 3 and 13. I know I’m a homer and all but I knew enough from watching Denver overhaul their team, their D as well as some positive additions on offense (and having a great OL), separate from the Cutler issue, it was hard to imagine them having a record too much worse than last year. And with a better D possibly even a bit better. But Clayton ONLY saw Cutler being gone.

Anyway, I’m with you, not worth caring much about. Just think he deserves to have it shoved back at him later. (Several gambling type pubs that I read derided Clayton’s predictions, fwiw.)

Thank you.

Clayton is a tool and can bite me. I’d be (pleasantly) surprised if the Broncos make the playoffs but I say they sure as hell will be better than Clayton says.

Thanks Nyc

Late to the party. I got to play golf for the 1st time in 3+ years (because of Lupus) this morning. Wouldn’t you know it, 40 mph winds, rain, sleet, and haiI. When the lightning showed up we decided to call it a day, after 5 holes. I didn’t do too bad for someone who’s been away from the game and sporting a backpack with an oxygen bottle.

Bettis should be driving the short bus

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jerome_bettis/09/21/week2/1.html

He dogs our broncos and then contradicts himself about the titans.

My assessment of the West so far.

San Diego has played poorly and are plagued with injuries, could easily be 0-2.

Oakland has actually played pretty well despite poor QB play.

Kansas has not faired well so far and doesn’t look to be changing too much.

Denver is 2-0 and has turned their Defense around and is showing signs of improvement on offense.
