ZOMG!! Josh McDaniels secret identity revealed!!!!
I have discovered Josh McDaniel's secret identity.
It really came to light during the comments discussion on mbudde33's recent FanPost "Orton vs Broncos Fans." Broncobear and I were discussing how our team is different this year, and the things that used to scare us, that used to be almost a given in the "L" column (San Diego -especially late in the season, KC at Arrowhead in December, etc) aren't necessarily so anymore. There is confidence that we have a top-flight set of coaches now that actually game-plan to each individual opponent on all sides of the ball, looking to exploit their weaknesses and create mismatches at every chance while doing our best to minimize our own weaknesses; adjustments to scheme at half-time as needed to go with the actual play on the field...and we are improving on our mistakes on every game so far.
Spock commented:
I’m beginning to develop a sense of and respect for the way he coaches on game day. It’s a conservative ratchet effect. Keep accumulating small advantages. Give none back. It leads to a pedestrian completion percentage while the kinks are being ironed out, and an initially low YPC for the backs, but the positive turnover differential speaks for itself and the efficiencies will come.
It struck me that "Keep accumulating small advantages. Give none back" is the perfect succinct description of the Broncos new modus operandi. And it also seemed very familiar. Where on earth had I heard that before?!
Then it hit me. It was straight out of a line from one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies: "Take what you can. Give nothing back."
And there it was...starring at me. It's all so obvious now. Coach, you cannot hide who you are underneath that hoodie any longer. You are found out!
Coach Josh McDaniels is a Pirate!
(Massive kudos to my awesome friend Liz for shopping this pic for me!)

McD Stays On Top of Things
Did you ever notice that some coaches (i.e. Mangini) have a deer in the headlight look on Sundays? McD does not. I am very impressed with McD’s attention to detail and awareness of situations on game day.
I remember in the Bengals game when McD was arguing with the officials that there should be more time on the clock after the Bengals TD. They ended up increasing the time from :20 to :38. Without this adjustment, there would have been no miracle play.
Now, we just have to stop burning out TOs in the middle of the game.
by ocbroncomaniac on Sep 23, 2009 11:15 AM MDT reply actions
Were the TOs used mostly in the first half?
I didn’t keep track but I think that first half TOs are just one more tool McD is using to keep the game in hand, keeping Orton and the offense on track, avoiding delay of games, letting Orton assess the defensive alignment with respect to the play called, avoiding a lost of yardage or down. Saving second half TOs for challenges and the end of the game are vitally important for a close game.
broncorat
Yes
I have noticed it mostly in the 1st half. He has also used them in the redzone prior to Sheffler’s TD.
by ocbroncomaniac on Sep 23, 2009 1:39 PM MDT up reply actions
That seems to support McD's "wholistic" approach to game management
He has 60 minutes, a vertical and horizontal playing surface, and six TOs. He has three squads and 53 people some more capable than others but all equally and adequately prepared. The McD mantra seems to be that you don’t need to win every battle, just make sure at the end that you won more of the little battles than the other team and then you’ll probably have more points. It’s working so far and things are really looking up!
broncorat
and the whole thing includes the great special teams control of Cribbs!
Nice to see 60 minutes of football on offense, defense, special teams, from players conditioned to play full-out for 60 minutes, and coaches coaching an entire game, even coaching at halftime to make adjustments. Things are looking WAY up……..I expect improvement on those things that are still not perfect, because I think McD expects eventual perfection.
PS. Great post, Kitten! and Rec’d for originality and the great picture!
I won’t lie and say I wasn’t a little concerned with how fast we burned through them in the first quarter, but I trust that wont become a habit as our offense becomes more and more comfortable with the new schemes.

I didn’t scroll down to the picture when I started reading this, the quote from Spock got me so jazzed that I went back to the original post he had responded to to find his comment to rec it. Then after a half hour of reading about whether or not Belloring Bertha needs to sit down and shut up or go on a diet I come back here to find that funny picture.
I like the ratchet effect very much after two games.
"It's the first time that I've probably ever seen a 260 pound back run into a free safety and go flat on his back, I mean it was exciting." ~John Elway
indeed, I hope the ratchet effect continues. Its a slow and steady way to take over a game, and make the opponent pay for every mistake.

Buried in the good humor of this post
is a great insight. Kudos to Spock and to Kitten for emphasizing it—as I missed it first time around. McD seems to be building things, one ratchet click at a time, on game day and in approaching the season and team as a whole, he’s always angling for steady methodical improvement. The fact that we’ve managed to win the first two games implies that the foundation he and his staff have built is sound, but clearly their focus is on building a sound team and sound program for the future…

I know it’s still so early only 2 games in, but I’ll take it. I like the direction as well. And I agree…sound team and a sound program for the future.

I had no idea
I was referring to a pirate when I was discussing McDaniels’ coaching style, but you’ve made me realize that I obviously was. Your friend Kate is hugely talented if she created that totally seamless pic, and you are very sharp for homing in on the key phrase — Accumulate small advantages. Give none back. — in my evaluation of McDaniels. That’s the essence of what I thought I saw in his game-management style. I can see the relationship to Belichick, but it’s a further development, not simply an imitation, of Belichick’s style (just as Shanahan’s further development of Walsh became the characteristic “Denver running game”).

It was the only logical conclusion, after all. :-)
IMO, you nailed the Broncos M.O. (at least what we’ve seen so far) with your comment, and I just had to highlight it again for everyone since it came at the end of the discussion on a post that was already gone from the front page.
I do hope that your instinct is correct on McDaniels taking some basics from Belichick and then further developing into his own “idiom” based on the players he has. If this is so, then Bowlen really found a gem in Josh and we are fortunate he jumped at the chance!

Awesome post
It’s no secret that I’ve been on board the McDaniels bandwagon from the day he was hired. With all of the focus on Cutler, everything else that he did in the offseason, which seemed to be clearly defined and with a very specific purpose, including hiring a vastly superior coaching staff, just screamed that this guy will achieve greatness as a head coach. Obviously, 2 games isn’t enough to draw any conclusions from, but it’s definitely something good to draw off of. He’s methodical, he’s precise, he’s detail-oriented, he’s a great motivator, and, contrary to popular belief, he’s very humble. Obviously, every guy in that position has an ego, but McDaniels seems to respect the game, the situation that he’s in, the fans, the players, and his owner, and he wants to do right by all of those factions. Here’s hoping it continues paying off.
