The Kyle Orton experiment, as promised.
Alright, so here we go, this is something I put together real fast last night so you all could (maybe) get a first hand view of how much the glove and splint have affected Kyle Orton's play the past few weeks. Watch the video, forgive the crap quality, and forgive me for jumbling and mumbling. Watch the video and we'll see how people trash KO then. Check-ch-check ch-check, ch-check it out!
Disclaimer, I did practice throwing with a glove for about 20 minutes last night beforehand, to get used to the glove and it wasn't pretty. The final throws for the video were still not pretty at all, but in any event, view:
Alright, so what do you think? Is Kyle Orton still just a big noodle armed baby? Or is it possible that he really has been better than anyone thought, given his circumstances?

Very good post, Joe
I have been saying for weeks now that a dislocated knuckle and having to wear a glove absolutely has to affect all phases of throwing a football. It’s a testament to KO’s toughness and ability to adapt! Great job and thanks for the time you spent on this experiment.
Rec’d.
" Life is what happens while you're making other plans "
And I am sure McDaniels scutinized every little factor in Orton's ability to throw the ball
just good enough to get by. Wait until he heals…sha-shaw!
smoke and mirrors man smoke and mirrors....
Just kiddin’ I think it does go without saying that his accuracy and confidence will be much better when he is back in his comfort zone, that said his numbers don’t look so bad with the glove and splint. Can only get better from here on out, good idea on the demonstration btw , I thnk we all kinda knew what you were saying before the video but the demonstration really brought home the point.

I wonder if anybody saw the pass that Stokley missed in the RedZone?
Stokley had made a simular catch for a first down twice before in the game, but the pass he missed was a bullit and I believe it caught Brandon by surprise. Maybe Orton had become more warmed up by then I don’t know, but we all know Stokley has pretty good hands and makes those catches. Zippa dee do da day.
scary
That’s an axe murderers basement if I have every seen one. Just kidding. thanks for the demo.

That was great Joe...Rec'd
I would challenge anyone to tape up their finger like that and just try to get through your normal day, let alone try to throw NO INT’s and win 2 NFL football games…
Thanks for your efforts
Nice job Joe
but I believe your footwork might have been a little off. HaHa! KO has been doing fine with the glove, but I haven’t seen any touch passes or 30 yard sideline loft routes. It will be interesting to see how the playcalling changes when the glove comes off.
Actually
for a follow up, I plan on getting out into my yard and heaving a few passes. I’m not a quarterback, but I do know how to get the ball where it needs to go.
So, I’m going to get out and set up a few targets and try the experiment from closer-to-life distances. I plan on trying from 10, 20, and 30 yards in all sorts of directions.

Not so sure that just because the glove is off...
That he’ll be 100% to full capability right away…He may still be somewhat limited and tentative for a couple of games until he has confidence that he can make all his throws…
And...
watching the offensive plans develop in general, and being a bit of a conspiracy theory junkie, I think the plan may be to add something in each week……maybe the long ball isn’t going to be used until opposing game-plans believes we aren’t going to do it.
I thought he threw well in the second game not so well in the first
But were 2 and 0 so why rehash game one. I think he can be very good going forward. I would take his game 2 performance the rest of the year gladly. We’re going to win this division and we’ll still get no love until next year.
Since you obviously have a Noodle arm
this was an accurate experiment. Just Kidding. Great work all around. I wouldn’t know the first thing about trying to put together something like this, so I would Rec it just for talent. You put a lot of work into this site. I don’t know how you do it and attend college at the same time. Thanks Bro.

A little rough around the edges :)
but graphic and convincing. I think I had underestimated how much of a handicap Orton was dealing with. It’s amazing that he’s been as effective as he has with that glove and finger wrap. It’s also a testament to how well he knows the offense and how much McDaniels trusts him. He beat out Simms in the first place because he picked up the offense faster.

great demo & instruction
I try to teach my students to throw a football. I see now how little I knew about it. Thanks for helpful tips.

KO is the man, period.
I’ve said this before, and great work cjf, but I’ve believed this all along. Kyle Orton will be a great quarterback for this team and system. I don’t know where all this noodle arm stuff started, or why with some it still persists, but the guy can throw a rope, left or right (side, not arm…we all saw his lefty), dink or deep, has touch and accuracy. I’m on record to say he’ll lead us to the playoffs, have a top 10 qb season, quiet the whiners and haters, and IS our qb for years to come. Give it a little time. It’s a new system, new teammates, new coaches, new environment. Sheesh. He can think, make great decisions, bad throws when necessary, great throws when needed, and he is a leader of men by demeanor and example. We won’t trade him next year, we’ll resign him to a long contract, and keep TB in reserve and let Simms go. And we’ll all be happy about it. Can’t believe these people ripping him before he even got started. He still puts up w’s. Win is why they play the game.

Rex Grossman fans
are the source of the “noodle arm” bs. They just hated the fact that KO beat out “sexy rexy” in 2008.
Weird??? nickname
It’s not a nickname Doc. Rocky…Rocko.
See what happens
when it’s past my bedtime and consumption of a couple of adult beverages. “sexy rexy” came from the female fanbase during 2006 SB run.
Joe, Good Work, You're more accurate with the glove than the Hutt is without
Throw #2 would have taken off Stokley’s head. Watch out.
You proved your points well regarding the speed and accuracy.
This should give anyone some appreciation for what Orton is going through.
Smokey, my friend, you are entering a world of pain.
Nice
work Joe. Hopefully Orton will be better when the glove and bandage come off. I appreciate the job Orton has done while dealing his injury, bandage, and glove but he is what he is glove or no glove an average quarterback. The question is whether Orton can become effective in McDaniels’s quarterback friendly offense this season since he will be a free agent next year or if McDaniel’s will be looking for a new starting quarterback next season. I was impressed by the sideline throw to Gaffney last Sunday-if Orton can make those type of throws consistently he might be our qb for several seasons but right now I don’t think he is our long term answer at qb but he has 14 more games to show what he can do.
You've been traded
Nicely done Joe. Chicago just called and offered a #1 and a #3 for your services. Turn in your playbook to the coach.
