Darrell Reid- Biggest Steal of the offseason?

Before you ream me through the roof saying that Brian Dawkins was a steal hear me out. Brian Dawkins was a KNOWN commodity. You knew what he brought on and off the field. What I am asking is who did we steal? I have heard we stole Ronald Fields who has played like a stud. But Darrell Reid, sack, Fumble Recovery consistent pressure.... these dont sound like the guy who played in INDY, sounds more like his College life. Here is why he is the biggest steal of the offseason...

Star-divide

46218_broncos_minicamp_football_medium

via cdn1.sbnation.com

Darell Reid has been quiet in his NFL Career making his name as a special teams ACE in Indianapolis. However, he was listed as a DT for a long time because he switched over a bit, with sucess, in college. He came in with more potential as a DE but since he has started playing OLB for us he has rocked the casba. So did Indy just not use him to his potential? was he due for a breakout year? or was this talent coached into him this offseason? How about all three?

Darrell is now playing to potential, and being coached to a scheme that uses him effectively. So while Fields may "hold down the fort" up front, Reid swoops in and takes the foundation out!

Rock On DR rock on!

Great post JT....

I ahve said from day 1 that he is an Adallius Thomas type. Its no coincidence that Nolan was the one who saw Adallisu’ potential…and he sees the same thing in Darryl Reid!

Good friend is a Colts fan

And as upset as he was when the Broncos nabbed him I had a good idea the guy was an animal. Gotta give Fields a close second just for the lack of love nationally!

But then again it is the MSM

The QB position is set.

They did

Miami played NE in division play – McD commented that Hill and Goodman had created problems for his offense and brought them on.

if you've got nfl game rewind

watch the first miami/new england game from last year. when new england is on offense and miami is on d, it’d funny how many of the guys on the field then are on our team now.

as long as you're paying attention

I was going to suggest Buckhalter (right up there with Reid as a steal)

But then I saw this comment from broncobear:

I think that we should also consider giving this award to McDaniels.

And then I said, that’s it. He’s the one that brought in Reid, Buckhalter, Nolan, Fields et. al.

A man does what he has to do, and sometimes it’s not what I believe he should do. There’s no reason to use up energy hating him for it. Shoot him if you have to, but don’t hate him.

I agree w/ bear that McDaniels is the steal the year…It’s been exciting to watch him put the Team together and now, it’s exciting to watch them play together…

It's pretty special what this organization has seemed to pull-off.

I just keep going back to everyone that kept saying that we did nothing to improve our front seven. I was a little skeptical myself, but not enough to get real vocal about it without seeing the product on the field. Though we’ve only witnessed two games, it’s clear that the front seven is actually a strength of this ball club. Whether it’s a strength of a mediocre ball club or a very good ball club is yet to be seen, but these front seven guys can play.

The additions of Fields, Reid, and Davis appear to be more than sufficient to go along with the solid talent already there— DJ, Doom, Thomas, Haggen, Woodyard, and Peterson. Ayres is a work in progress, but I am willing to be patient with him and give him the benefit of the doubt throughout the entire year. I’m thrilled he’s getting regular reps on passing downs. Although he hasn’t shown much yet, the reps alone will help the future of the club. If he’s the player he’s billed out to be, he and Doom will be a force for years to come.

You take all these guys and add Nunnely, Martindale, Phifer, and Nolan to coach them up, and the one-year turnaround isn’t as surprising as it seems. Kudos’s to Josh McDanials, Brian Xandars, and Pat Bowlen for pulling this off.

Kind of puts KO and the offenses performance during the interteam practice into perspective, eh?

Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?

Great Pick Up

Thanks for brining this up. D Reid has had a knack for making plays the first two games. He’s also Mr. Versality as Nolan has lined him up both at OLB and 3-4 DE (When he sacked Palmer I believe it was a three man rush with Reid as a DE).

I’m loving our linebackers right now. I don’t know if you all have seen the two previous post game reports at denverbroncos.com, but the LB pre games are intense. Before the Cinci game, Reid was screaming at his teammates “The LBs set the tone.” Before the Cleveland game, Andra was going crazy knocking helmets and screaming at the other linebackers. It seems they’re creating a culture of accountability and playing as a unit, which is simply awesome.

the steal of the year – Wayne Nunnely!!!!!

How SD let him get away is beyond me, but it’s our gain.

thats why i limited it to players. Nunnley leaves and the D-line in SD can do Nunnley!

About McDaniels and the staff

In past seasons I was always nervous about playing teams that we should beat. How many times have we played down to the competition in the last few years. I know this team is still all new, but I am not nervous about going into this game against the Raiders. We should beat the Raiders and we will. I feel like McDaniels will not allow the Broncos to loss to those teams we should not lose to. The Broncos will be prepared for every team. When McDaniels losses his first game, it will not be because the team was not prepared to play their best. Is it too early to feel that way?

something mcd has said from day one was that he wants these guys to be prepared to compete every single game. as a fan, that is all i can ask. i dont expect my team to win alway- infact, i am glad i am not sure they will- that is why i love pro sports, the intrigue. i may not know if they will win, but i do know they will come to play.

If I had to pick one player

I think Reid was a steal, but so was fields, Hill, Goodman, Davis – on defense.

But in my mind the real steal was Gaffney. While everyone seems to have picked up the defense quickly, the offense has been a work in progress. And the key to that progress has been Gaffney (well Orton too but that’s another story). From all reports he has been been a player-coach to the other receivers, a steadying influence in camp, and has been a go to guy in games. He is the one receiver Orton knows will be where he should be when Orton needs someone.

By mid-season, when the other receivers are up to speed, his contribution may no longer seem as significant. But right now, I’d say he is the glue holding our passing game together until the other receivers get on the same page with Orton. Will he get the stats? Probably not, but he makes the rest of the offense better by his presence.

by SlowWhiteGuy on Sep 23, 2009 11:57 PM MDT up reply actions   2 recs

+1 SWG

That is who came to my mind. (Gaffney) I live in New England and he always seemed to be overshadowed by Welker and Moss. He made many quality catches with the pats but never seemed to gbet credit or noticed. I think he will do real well here and get the credit and recognition that he deserves.

You're right

They brought in Don Johnson, formerly of the Bears who coached with Rivera there. He’s always been a 4-3 guy and Rivera may have them looking in that direction. Even before the injuries, the Chargers D line wasn’t playing like last year and I had to wonder if they aren’t missing Nunnely.

Great thread and some great comments

including SlowWhiteGuy on Nunnely (one of your typically shrewd insights) and especially the Bear on McDaniels, since it all starts at the top. The MSM was ready to credit McDaniels for ruining the Broncos, so it seems reasonable to blame him for the startlingly rapid and effective transformation. But if it starts at the top maybe we should go one better and nominate Bowlen, who had the guts to fire the face of the franchise and resist the temptation to bring in a defensive guru, and the acumen to realize that McDaniels was the man who could best turn the Broncos around in all three phases of the game.

That pretty much encompasses the steals of the year. We got lots of them.

Reid is a good pick, but lebowski already spoke my mind.

It’s a bit too early to tell. I do think he is in the same category as Doom, in that he was meant for a 3-4 style defense, and not a 4-3. Our defensive give these kind of guys the best of both worlds. They are aren’t a DE like in the 4-3, and they aren’t a LB like in the 3-4. They are something in between, and that’s exactely the kind of players these guys are.

I bet there are a ton of jems out there that fit this role, guys who had too much athleticism and talent to be forced into a DE role, but were too big to lock up as a LB. Plus college players don’t get much choice with these positions, and even DE’s get rotated out as 1-move situational guys. In the NFL guys like Reid, Moss, and Doom will thrive if they are in the right place, and a 5-2 End is the position they were born for.

"For since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities (His eternal power and divine nature) have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse." Romans 1:20

by USMCWall on Sep 23, 2009 11:40 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

Versatility seems to be the order of the day. Doom and Reid are different types who play similar positions. Reid can play 34DE or LB, Doom playing left or right side (Had to chuckle when Pork Chop said his sacks came against Joe Thomas when 3 of them were on St. Clair). Nolan seems to favor mixing it up as much as he can, not pigeonholing players into one single role/position.

This is what we wanted...

It Makes Things Interesting

if the Defense can keep it together. As we look forward to drafting and bringing players in having a defense that looks for players differently can pay dividends by providing us with guys with a low demand but big payoff.

It's a toss up because there were so many,

like Buckhalter and Dawkins from Philly, Reid from Indy, Fields from San Fran, Goodman and Hill from Miami, Thomas from Pittsburg? They all have contributed so far so it is hard to really say this one or that one was a steal. Heck they are all pretty darn good and a lot better than who we had.

by bfree2bronc on Sep 23, 2009 11:41 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I would go with

Gaffney. He reminds me a lot of Rod Smith. He is a competent, reliable veteran. He gets open when you need him the most and he makes the catch in the tough situations. I am not really sure that he qualifies as a steal, because he was a known commodity to McD.

I think that Jarvis Moss will be contributing before too long as well.

I gotta go with Bear. The player personnel evaluations and moves both within the organization and out that McD has made is incredible. And staff as well. He knows football, and he knows talent. One day he’ll also be a superstar GM. But I hope not at the same time as a coach. That, to me, never pans out well.

Ok hear me out

but what about Orton?

I know, hes not the best quarterback. And I wish I could investigate the percentage differneces between him and mr cutler at this time in the year, along with interceptions and stuff, but I’m at work at can’t get on this sight at home for some reason. Can someone look into that possibly?

I just think about this, we have no interceptions, really hasnt been a chance for any, and he manages the ball and the field really well. And he learns pretty fast. Doesnt seem to make the same mistake twice.

I will say this, I can agree with everyone that has been listed and I think they are very worthy. I’m not saying Orton is better, just wanted to throw my 2 cents in here and throw out another name.

I like the Orton suggestion.

It’s funny that it took 40+ replies to bring him up. We might call him the biggest steal at the end of the year, but I think (and hope) that in three years we are saying Tom Brandstater as a 6th round pick was a Brady-like steal—perhaps the biggest steal of all time. Although TD in the 6th and Meck in the 12th should be mentioned as well.

"Stealing a March"

There is too much change on our team to really be specific with compliments. We have an entirely new Defense and Scheme, and it gets dizzying trying to keep up with who just had a superlative performance. I can’t come up with a negative about our new staff members, and the players are either out-performing their pasts, or showing unexpected return on investment.
There is an old military term “Stealing a march”. It refers to making a move, typically while your enemy is asleep or unaware, that they can’t respond to, that they didn’t expect. It has to to with waking up in the morning and not being able to pinpoint the enemy’s position, or waking to find them over-running your position. This off-season appears to have been a march stolen on our opponents… in the Media and elsewhere. They will awaken startled and confused. Hell, I awaken startled and confused! I think McDaniels will deal in confusion, and that we as fans or students of the game will have to deal with that confusion as a sign that things are right with the Broncos.

Henry Miller:

"Confusion is a word we have invented for an order which is not yet understood"

So in other words, or in shorter words, I choose the Off-Season, or our “Stolen March” as the biggest steal. Thank you, Mr Bowlen!

I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok.

Bronctillidie got who I would say

Out of players only – Gotta say Orton, because his value is huge, and keeping in mind what else we got for trading ONE player – that’s how I spell s_t_e_a_l …. Granted we are still in week 2, so Dude’s got a point as well – a little too early to say who’s the ‘biggest’

- but thus far, if the considering point is actually how much we’re paying the aforementioned steal for the value we get on the field – gotta be Kyle, man…
