Blackout in the Black Hole
So here is my question to everyone here. Is the NFL's blackout policy good for the game or bad for the game. I believe the goal was to assist teams in increasing their ticket sells, but, with the price as high as they are for most teams there are a lot of folks who just can't afford them. Blackouts just aren't an issue for Denver as it is very difficult to get a ticket for a home game, which is a good thing. Oakland really suffers selling out games and then throw in a economy that makes the common man tighten his wallet and well sales just don't get done.
IMHO opinion the NFL only hurts itself with the blackout rule. I'm sorry I'm just not going to spend $100 and drive 100 miles in horrid traffic to go watch the game. I understand it's business and they are trying to generate revenue, but you don't do that by alienating the general fan.
This is a Fan-Created Comment on MileHighReport.com. The opinion here is not necessarily shared by the editorial staff of MHR

The Raiders not selling out is a poor example to use…They have rarely sold out for years, and the trend will likely continue…Not so sure that the cost and econemy has/had much to do with the Raiders ability to sell out as they have been advertising a ticket/food gift certificate special this week…Tickets for 2 and a $100.00 food GC for $112.00 and they still were not able to get it done…
Bottom line, it is just not (for more than a few reasons) a very good (OK, poor)environment to go to for an NFL game…Been there, done that, not fun at all!
Oakland needs to add “Free Bodyguard” to their promotions. They might actually sell out that craphole of a stadium.

More truth than at first apparent!
My partner couldn’t get tickets to see a Bronco game at home, so he took his wife and 10 year old to the Black Hole to take in the game. Despite being VERY quiet about his affiliations, his experience was terrifying for the boy and unsettling for the adults. They certainly are NOT getting tickets sold to opposing team supporters, and that will translate into fewer sellouts (unless you are Denver, of course).

Granted the Raiders
aren’t a great example. However, I still stand by thoughts about the blackouts in general. I agree with your last about being a poor environment……..Didn’t know about the promotions here in the Sacramento area………poor marketing as well maybe?
Hope you didn't think I was dissing you...Wasn't my intent!

Jax isn't going to sell out a single game here
Poor team + bad economy = 8 blackouts. It’s not like the Jags have a weak fan base, everyone here loves them, but no one wants to go to the games – I don’t know why (but good for me if I ever want to go to one).
Owning the Patriots since September 9, 1960
wow, that doesn't sound like Jax at all.....
based on the economy I guess this isn’t surprising, but I wouldn’t have expected that in Jax
If the NFL teams that don’t sell out would adjust their ticket prices according to the times, they could probably sell more seats.
A seat unsold is much worse than a seat sold for a little less profit.
They need to price it correctly to create demand & then gradually increase prices as long as the demand is there.
Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory... lasts forever.
I agree here, and I would add:
That a team price their tickets based on the reality of their team providing a good showing. If your team is atrocious like the raiders, you probably need to cheapen things up. Cheap fans come to watch a cheap team. Dedicated fans will find a way to come see a good team regardless of the price; as it is a matter of entertainment priority. If your team is awesome, you’ll forego seeing a few movies throughout the year and going out to eat in order to go to at least 1 game.
"For since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities (His eternal power and divine nature) have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse." Romans 1:20
Interesting points both of you,
I guess maybe my biggest grip, is I can understand the Bay Area being blacked out., but so is Sacramento a 100 miles away……I’d say there are more Niner fans around here than Raiders, for that matter there may be more Bronco fans here than Raider fans….:o)
The team providing a good showing
I remember this being an issue with the Denver Nuggets in the 80’s. I got tickets for one game for 20 bucks a seat. And if you bought 2, you got a large pizza and a 2 litre of pop. So like desibroncofan said, cheap seats filled are better than not.
So if the raiders want to sell tickets, they need to start giving away free handcuffs, so the fans can pretend that they are part of the team as well.
There is no charge for awesomeness, or attractiveness!!

I agree desibroncofan and USMCWall
The economy and the winning percentage should be held accountable as a variable in ticket prices. The NFL is ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.

Breaking jaws or the NFL in Oakland who cares? Fall on your pirate’s sword - Ponderosa
I paid for Sunday Ticket on DirecTV.
I get to see every game, every play (as many times as I want), can pause to go to the bathroom or frig for a beer, tailgate on the frontporch, don’t have to worry about getting shot, stabbed or mugged. Hmmm. $255.00, 16 games, peace of mind, priceless.
Happy you have extra $$
I have issues with DirecTV in a couple of areas and just won’t deal with them anymore. Otherwise I might have gone that route.
its actually a little know law/requirement
In 1973 congress passed a law that requires the NFL to blackout games that are not sold out with 72hrs, there can be exceptions to the rule and reduces it toa 48 hr period. prior to 1973 all home games were blacked out.
Seeing since I live here in Sd i root for blackouts so I can see denver play. Sd has been lucky the past 2 weeks and has avoided blackouts. Their next home game will be sold out, because its on MNF against Denver. I dont have a problem with it, because growing up I never had a Broncos game sold out. I get tired of the whining about it. Me personally I would rather watch it on TV. But living here I can get good seats at the Q.
BTW the NFL has ticket prices locked in and ny NFL mandate they will not lower the face value, unless a 3rd party buys them and then can re-sell them at a lower price
somethings wrong, Trying to conquer these fears i thought were gone. And it's been so long, I'm dying to live in a world i don't belong

Years of Losing
First of all….I live in Oakland, but remain a Bronco fan through and through….and the blackouts in Oakland are the result of many things, but first and foremost…despite the fanatic reputation of tRaider nation, this team has been simply awful for the last few years, and their QB, typically the face of any franchise, is looking more and more like a bust. All NFL games (not just in Oakland) are an expenive proposition, and with a bad economy, who wants to sit and watch a team either lose badly (many of their games over the past few years are over in the 3rd quarter) or lose in heart breaking fashion (the other popular way for the tRaiders to lose is at the very end when they simpy could not close out an opponent).
The ownership is a bit odd (an understatement!) as well, and the drafting strategy has not exactly excited the fan base either. The stadium is old, and right now features a baseball infield in the middle of it, and there is simply not enough reason to get off the couch and attend the games….and now that the Niners are playing better, with an intriguing coach, they are pulling even more of the football attention away from Oakland.
Finally, at most venues, the opponents fan base can attend games without fearing for their personal safety…I have attended Bronco games at Candlestick Park (Niners homefield) and I am struck by the relative politeness (in fact, during the Niners heyday, there were bemused fans that were sort of surprised that anyone would root for ANYONE but the Niners…but it was more like curisoity than hatred)…I also attended the last game of the season 3 years ago at Invesco when the Niners ruined the Broncos playoff hopes…and saw many Niner fans, and there was little or no animosity. But here I am in Oakland, with tickets available to watch the Broncos play, and it would not occur to me to drop $200 and attend the game…I’ll likely look up a friend in Sacramento instead….I have been to several Bronco v tRaider games over the years…and I have seen a 7 year old boy wearing an Elway jersey pelted with debris and cursed at….bad form, to say the least….

was just over to the raiders
SBnation site. All the post are 1 day or older. I get on MHR everyday and find at least 9 or 10 that are more recent than 10 hours old. I thin that there site is a reflection of the attitude of the fan base. Guru put up his usual “lets have an intelligent football converstion about the upcoming game” and it only generated 80 comments. with about half if not more from MHR posters.
From the comments here and others on a few other post it seems like the only ones that are going to raiders games are the hard core raider fans of old or those who think that is how they should act. Sorry to say it but it really is sad to see. you can have a fierce rivalry but still maintain some discipline about how you treat each other. I don’t like raider fans but would never treat them like that. Especially a child.
Just hard for me to understand.
Probably has a lot to do with the product
I grew up with the Cubs, so I understand being a fan through all futility, but after a half decade of watching what’s happening in OAK, I’d be pretty discouraged too. Even last season they were more excited than they are now.
