The Dude Abides...Week 2 Spotlight on Ron Fields and Ryan Harris.
Last week, I took a play by play look at Brandon Marshall and Champ Bailey. This week, I had originally intended to look at Ryan Clady on offense. However, he was so completely dominant, I thought it would be more interesting to see how Clady does in later weeks against better competition.
So this week I looked at Ron Fields and Ryan Harris, play by play. As I stated last week, it's quite interesting to watch a game and not pay attention to the ball. It allows you to see things from a much different perspective. For example, as you will see from the drive log, Ron Fields does not generally play NT on passing downs. Marcus Thomas subs for him. Simply by watching this substitution, one can see pre-snap (without straining to see the secondary coverage) whether Coach Nolan is thinking the offense is going to run or pass. It also allows you to see when he guesses wrong, which means Fields is trying to generate a pass rush (not really his strength). It also allows you to see when Nolan guesses right, which is most of the time. Rarely does Nolan have Fields on the field when the offense passes the ball.
As always, I have below the play log for each player if you would like to read a play by play account of both Fields and Harris. But I've also included a brief bullet point summary of each as well with an overall grade (of out 10). As an aside, I would have given Champ Bailey and 9.5 last week and Brandon Marshall a 5.5.
Ron Fields
- B.J. who? What a great pickup Fields was. Although he generally subs with Marcus Thomas on passing downs, this guy gives the Center and Guard a lot of hell on 1st and 2nd down. He got a lot of push all day against the Browns.
- He is quicker than advertised and generally stays low on the double teams. I only saw him stood up twice during the game and it was more due to the fact that he got off the ball a bit late. He is also shifty and will sometimes twist out of the double teams as well.
- He likes to split the double team when possible instead of simply holding the point. This caused not just one, but several disruptions in the backfield and was a critical part of Denver's run defense. However, he can hold the point well. I only saw him pushed back on one running play all game.
- As an added bonus, it appears from his body language that he really enjoys the carnage on the inside. I like this about him. He's demented.
- Clearly his big weakness is lateral movement, and when the play flows away from him, he's probably not going to make the tackle. But this is not his job in Nolan's defense.
- Doesn't generate much of a pass rush (again, not really his job)
Overall Grade: 8.5 out of 10. I would say there were only 3 plays in which he could have done a better job of either getting push or taking on the double team. He's a great fit for 1st and 2nd downs for this scheme. He penetrates and stays very low and is disruptive. I would have graded him higher if the Browns hadn't had to pass so much in the 2nd half and he was in on more plays. If you want to see what Ron Fields is all about, simply look at Cleveland's first drive of the game in which he was a wreckin' crew.
Ryan Harris:
- An exceptional pass blocker from the tape that I saw. He was beat only twice during the game (once badly on an edge rush where he leaned), but Orton was not sacked on either play.
- He is decent as a run blocker against defensive tackles, but devastating against linebackers. When he gets to the 2nd level (some of Denver's run plays call for him to combo), he pastes linebackers and they want no part of him.
- He is very good at sealing off the backside, takes this seriously, and doesn't take a play off, even if the ball is run far away from him. This is also true of Clady, and both men seem to enjoy cut blocking the backside as well.
- After runs, it's fun to watch him because he is always down field celebrating like he is one of the skill players. I enjoyed this a lot.
- The Browns stunted on him several times and also sent and extra blitz defender at him on several occasion, with some limited success.
Overall Grade: 7.8 out of 10. I may be grading a little tough, but I think Harris can play better, although he certainly performed fine in this game. I have to ding him for the 2 plays in which he was beat on the edge and handful of play in which he could have shown a better push on the run or better decision making on the blitz. He's not going to show quite the domination that we see thus far from Ryan Clady, but he is certainly a very good tackle.
Again, if anyone wants a play by play of this, it is below, and if you want someone specifically spotlighted next week, let me know in the comment section. Against the Raiders, we could probably draw straws and find someone good.
Go Broncos!!
Rock the Neck Beard!!

CLE kicked off, P. Hillis returned kickoff for 24 yards. P. Hillis fumbled. B. Costanzo recovered fumble
B. Quinn incomplete pass down the middle
*Wow. Fields bursts past the center on the left side, forcing the running back to help and double him. Not a bad first play from scrimmage.
J. Lewis rushed up the middle for 1 yard gain
*Fields slants hard left, but has the athletic ability to spin 360 degrees back into the play away from the blocker and gets part of the tackle of Lewis at the line of scrimmage.
B. Quinn passed to B. Edwards down the middle for 14 yard gain
*Clear passing down. Fields not in the formation.
J. Lewis rushed to the left for 1 yard gain
*Again great burst and takes on the double team hard. Nice pushback. Not involved in play, but good strength on the double team.
J. Lewis rushed to the right for 2 yard gain
*On this play, he is surprised by the quick snap and comes out of his stance too high and is pushed back. This play is in clear contrast to the previous play. Could have done much better.
B. Quinn incomplete pass to the left
*Obvious passing down. Fields not in the formation.
P. Dawson kicked a 22-yard field goal

*Harris doesn't get a good push. His man sheds him and makes the tackle.
2nd-8, DEN43 10:28 K. Orton incomplete pass to the right
*Tackle stunts to the inside. Harris follows him for a moment until he realizes the linebacker is now coming through the hole he vacated. It's too late. Harris can only whiff at him. Linebacker comes through pretty clean, but luckily, Orton has thrown the ball.
3rd-8, DEN43 10:23 K. Orton incomplete pass to the right
A screen pass, but it's diagnosed by Cleveland well. Harris ends up blocking no one.
4th-8, DEN43 10:07 B. Kern punt. J. Cribbs returned punt for 7 yards
*Not involved in play.
Cleveland - 10:07

*Non eventful. It's a pass. There are two blockers, hard for Fields to mount much of anything.
2nd-10, CLE12 10:02 J. Harrison rushed up the middle for 1 yard gain
*Fields is very quick off the ball, splits the defenders and then has the quickness to lunch from behind to help take down the runner. A disruptive force on this play.
3rd-9, CLE13 9:14 B. Quinn rushed up the middle for no gain. B. Quinn fumbled. D.
Reid recovered fumble
*It's another for sure passing down, so Fields is not in the formation.

*Nice seal off from Harris on his man on the backside. Just Excellent.

DEN kicked off, touchback
Cleveland - 8:03

* Fields is pushed back slightly by the double team but fights hard and is in on the tackle.

* The ball is run to the outside, so Fields simply pursues.

* Fields is a non-factor in the pass rush as Quinn scrambles out of the pocket.
2nd-5, CLE40 6:30 J. Lewis rushed up the middle for 3 yard gain
* Fields pushes his man into the backfield but doesn't get the tackle.
3rd-2, CLE43 5:48 B. Quinn passed to M. Furrey to the left for 2 yard gain

*Fields not in formation.
2nd-9, CLE46 4:31 B. Quinn passed to B. Edwards down the middle for 20 yard gain
*Fields not in formation.
1st-10, DEN34 3:55 J. Lewis rushed up the middle for 2 yard gain
* Fields is inside this double team somewhere! He stands up to the pressure is one of the reasons this play doesn't go more than 2 yards.
2nd-8, DEN32 3:15 B. Quinn passed to J. Harrison to the left for 2 yard gain
*Fields not in the formation. As an aside, Adra Davis is one hell of a linebacker even in coverage on this play.

*Fields not in the formation.
4th-5, DEN29 1:49 P. Dawson kicked a 47-yard field goal

*What can you say about Harris and his pass blocking? Perfect once again.
1st- 10, CLE16 13:05 C. Buckhalter rushed up the middle for 2 yard gain
* Harris does an average job of sealing backside.
2nd-8, CLE14 12:21 K. Orton incomplete pass down the middle
* Not sure what happens on this play, but it appears as if the guard blows his assignment and the middle linebacker is left free for a blitz. Harris stays with is block even as Orton scrambles out of the pocket.
3rd-8, CLE14 12:15 K. Orton passed to B. Stokley to the right for 9 yard gain
*Harris does a good job here, but his man eventually breaks through to flush Orton from the pocket. But he did give Orton time. I wouldn't consider this a breakdown for Harris.
1st-5, CLE5 11:58 K. Orton incomplete pass to the right
*Quick fade play. Harris does fine.
2nd-5, CLE5 11:54 K. Orton incomplete pass to the left
*Good pass blocking once again.
3rd-5, CLE5 11:49 K. Orton incomplete pass to the right
*Well every good think must come to an end. Harris is beat on the outside by a nice and shifty juke move and the defensive end goes right by him. This is the breakdown on the play that causes Orton to essentially throw the ball into the ground. Harris gets used on this play.

*Good job, no penetration.

*Play run away from Harris. Unsuccessfully tries to cut his man backside.
3rd-1, DEN15 2:42 K. Moreno rushed to the right for 1 yard gain

1st-10, DEN16 2:05 C. Buckhalter rushed to the right for 4 yard gain
*Good initial push, could have finished better.
2nd-6, DEN20 1:59 K. Orton incomplete pass to the right
*Quick pass, so Harris did a good job.

*Good pass blocking once again by Harris.
2nd-10, DEN31 1:42 K. Orton incomplete pass to the right

3rd-10, DEN31 1:37 K. Orton passed to B. Stokley to the left for 18 yard gain
*Again, good pass blocking by Harris.
1st-10, DEN49 1:32 K. Orton passed to E. Royal to the left for 2 yard gain
* Strange play. Play is away from Harris and he does a good job, then Royal cuts back across the field. Harris finds another man and hits him when the plays reverses.
2nd-8, CLE49 0:59 CLE committed 18 yard penalty
*Harris does an average job of pass blocking. Harris's man almost gets to Orton.
1st-10, CLE31 0:53 K. Orton incomplete pass down the middle

2nd-10, CLE31 0:47 K. Orton passed to B. Stokley down the middle for 10 yard gain
*Harris essentially takes out two blockers on this play. Excellent work.

2nd-12, CLE21 14:24 J. Lewis rushed up the middle for 3 yard gain
*Fields gets pushed back on the double team. Tough tough double team on this play.
3rd-9, CLE24 13:34 B. Quinn passed to J. Cribbs to the right for 7 yard gain. J. Cribbs fumbled. B. Dawkins recovered fumble
*Fields on the formation on passing down. As a side note, these kinds of plays just did not seem to happen from previous Denver defenses. I'm just saying.
Denver - 13:34
1st-10, CLE38 13:34 DEN committed 5 yard penalty
*Whistle before snap.
1st-15, CLE43 13:31 K. Orton passed to B. Marshall to the right for 6 yard gain

*Another good seal by Harris.
1st-10, CLE39 3:26 L. Jordan rushed to the right for 2 yard gain

*Just running out the clock, but Harris is still getting off the ball well. This wasn't designed as a cutback, but because Harris does a good job sealing, it happens.

*Jordan could have read the block to the inside here, but so what. It's the end of the game.

*Harris seals once again.

Dude that was a lot of work. Thanks and rec'd
Harris is not as good as Clady but he is as good as most tackles in the league. If Clady continues to do his job there Pro Bowl. I am glad that they kept Baker and let him groom under Fields and Thomas. Fields is way better than most people thought…way to go Nolan.
Agreed, bfree
I think Harris will play even better down the line, and he played pretty darn good against the Browns.
Smokey, my friend, you are entering a world of pain.

Your eye for detail and dedication for bringing us the ‘Abiding Dude’ are both amazing. The time you spend on these posts are much appreciated.
You asked for players to watch…
On defense, and I know they’re not starters, I would like to see a progress report on Alphonso Smith and Woodyard….if they get in the game that is.
On offense, an update on Marshall is always fun.
May “The Dude Abides” keep going and going and going
Thanks again

Mike, Since you are the guy with the Kool-Aid
I will make a special effort to look at both Woodyard and Smith next week.
On offense, who knows. We will probably run the ball a lot and I think we’ll see Clady up against Seymour one on one a lot this game. I think this could be the week for Clady. I can’t wait to see Clady go up against him actually. I can’t believe I am saying that I am more excited to watch this matchup than I am to see the damn ball in the air, ha!
Smokey, my friend, you are entering a world of pain.
Being a Boise State fan I've followed Clady for some time....
Sounds great! Let me know the details of Clady vs Seymour.
Keep an eye on Marshall, if you have the time, I’m expecting a ‘Randy Moss’ kinda showing for some reason.

How bout those Boise St. Broncos?
Off to a great start again this season the bowled over Bowling 49-14. With Cal and PennSt losing it should get interesting for a BCS Bowl game if they continue to dominate.

Much as I like
Woodyard and Smith, I think it would be much more interesting to see how DJ and Clady did against the faiders

What does BAMF mean? LOL...
Only kidding, Smith looks like the real deal for sure and look for him to start picking people off real soon.

This is an incredible amount of work Dude
Thanks for the effort.

Thanks and definitely rec’d!

As long as I know as least 1 other person is reading them, I will continue. When something is interesting, it’s not work!

Much appreciated!
You’re the man… As Mike said, I would love to see Woodyard and the Phonz broken down. I would also like to see Kenny Peterson, as he is a player I didn’t think was better than the rest of the hooligans that made up the D-Line last year, but who is clearly playing good football at the moment. Jabar Gaffney would also be interesting, as he seems to be significantly better than I thought as well.

If we end up passing a lot this game, I will take you up on Gaffney for sure.

This is great LB
Thanks for the time you take…
Sounds like WW and Phonz are booked up for next week but we don’t hear too much commentary about how DJ is going in his new position. Any chance you get, I’d love your take. Must be honest, I’ve seen three games this year and I tend to be a ball watcher so maybe this week, I’ll try focusing on DJ, just for my own interest.
Good stuff.

thanks Dude
i’d never intentionally disagree with mike clark, but i gotta second orange&blue_aussie’s call for the spotlight on DJ.
as long as you're paying attention
Well, I will slack off from work this week and try both, how about that?
Smokey, my friend, you are entering a world of pain.
Thanks again Dude...
I’m really curious about DJ too, but no matter whom you choose to focus on, these are great reads…

Lovin em! I like the idea of Smith, Woodyard, Peterson, Reid, or Hill on D…. DJ, I always keep an eye on him, and he was in the last Gameday as the ‘Jack’ of all trades (Game program from the Cardinals stomping), so I’ve got a pretty good feeling where he’s at, but a breakdown definitely wouldn’t hurt.
Offensively I’d like to hear a little more about how our tight ends are holding up in the blocking aspects – I’ve noticed some good things, but certainly don’t pay attention to the blocking schemes in every play…
Dude, whoever you decide will be more than worthy and greatly appreciated (as always) for the efforts. Kick a$$ stuff, man! Thanks again.
And just because I don’t know if you feel appreciated enough….. (gets down on hands and knees and starts Wayne’s World’n it up)

No problem. It's interesting to break it down, so it's not work. I will give it a roll.
Nice WW reference too, man!
Smokey, my friend, you are entering a world of pain.
Always appreciate your in depth work Dude...Rec'd
Regarding suggestions…I think it would be interesting to get your break-down of our Pro-Bowl center Casey the Wieg-mann and how he contributes to the calls at the line of scrimage…And, maybe in the coming weeks you could watch DJ to see how he is responding to his new (again) role…
Again, thanks for the effort and hard work!
BS
Good call (pun intended). He was on the radar, but I thought I would give him a few weeks to adjust. On the few plays he had against SR from Cleveland that I looked at, he held his own better than the media said.
Smokey, my friend, you are entering a world of pain.
Fields
I’m glad you keyed in on Fields. I was much higher on the acquisition of Fields in the off-season than most seemed to be. I’m glad to get a report card showing his contributions thus far. Thank you for all that you do for us. We are all very lucky to have you here at MHR. Highly rec’d!
