The Bungles just beat Pittsburgh

Anybody still think that week 1 Denver win was meaningless?

by TheMastermind on Sep 27, 2009 5:06 PM MDT reply actions

And was booming the kickoffs.

I believe there was only one kickoff return past the 20 (mostly because most of the kickoffs were into the endzone) and that was after the last field goal in the 4th quarter. The FG’s were fairly short distances, but still he looked good, was consistent and really helped the special teams play with those kickoffs. Good overall day for Prater.

We're making a habit

of stopping kickoff returns at about the 15-yard line. Our opponents are almost better off just taking a knee.

It keeps happening...

Each week our win is written off as unimpressive because of poor opponent quality… 2 impressive wins by Cincy now, and this Raiders team almost beat SD in week 1. Today’s domination really can’t be ignored anymore

Fluke play or not

the real point is we fought a good team to a standstill in their own stadium and then won with Stokley’s smart play and their mental error.

by spock on Sep 27, 2009 5:30 PM MDT up reply actions

Yep that offsets the Browns being so bad lol

Yeah, our opponents were weak… except the Cinci team who just beat the Packers and Steelers in consecutive weeks….

But I think what we’re all seeing here that’s REALLY making me believe, is the manner by which we’re winning. Sound & solid football. We’re a running team again!! That’s Broncos football. We’re running back strong! Buck & Moreno are looking like one of the best backfield duos in the league & Hillis in the wings. As advertised McD’s play calling has been excellent. A good system QB with a REALLY good O-line… and an amazingly improved #1 defense in the league!!

Sure we’re likely to struggle in our upcoming schedule, any team would. But the Broncos team I’ve been watching this year… we’re going to be ok. WOW!! I’m pretty freaking happy about this whole ‘maybe we won’t suck for the next three years!’ thing!!!!!

I’m getting that Koolaid feeling and I swear I haven’t touched a drop! Cloud nine!

BTW I remember many many years when beating the Raiders in the hole was the only good thing that would happen …but that would be enough!

BTW2 The fall of KC, the Raiders & maybe SD a little …the upcoming Broncos… Crazy. I might even begin to generate enough hope to be disappointed with a good year. Very exciting!

The 3 tight end set is awsome!

We just put 215 yards and 4.8 per carry on one of the best D lines in the League, and it was the 3 TE set that was the key. I’m really impressed with McDaniels’ flexibility as a game planner. This is a coach that uses 3 wides as a base, and now he’s using 3 TE 60-70% of the time.

And that, my friend

is why I have reasonable, intellectual, non-emotional, non-biased confidence going into the Dallas game. (TIC). I look to my right at the 3TE set, the improving pass game, the geared up running game, the low turnover rate, the high take-away rate, the consistently very-good-bordering-on-great special teams play, the excellent run defense, the overall defensive cohesion, and the secondary moving like the proverbial Swiss watch, with Dawk making great play after great play. Then I look to my left and see McD, Nolan and gang rubbing their hands together in anticipation, leaning forward, their their heads bobbing up and down in excited anticipation, as they conspire to make more mischief for the opposition and MSM pundits………Then I sit back and I am LAUGHING, man, just LAUGHING!!!.

That's an ignorant statement

But, then again, when it comes to the media, there’s a LOT of ignorance on this site.

Quit focusing on it. Seriously. You will NEVER be satisfied. I promise.

And Williamson did watch the game. I’ll guarantee you that. And, unlike you, I’m right. He probably had all games on the TV.

As for his angle, I’m guessing that, barring something miraculous, it was predetermined that the ‘rapid reactions’ would be written from the perspective of the home team in all intra-division matchups . Doesn’t that make sense? He’ll undoubtedly write about the Broncos later this week.

The obsession with the media is ridiculous. Just watch the games and shut up. It’s getting ridiculous. I hope the staff writers here stop encouraging it. It’s ruining the site for others and only encouraging more ignorance.

No. I am not him and have never met him. Frankly, I think his reporting is amateurish and riddled with cliches. But that’s an actual valid complaint, whereas blindly accusing him of not watching the team play is pretty much baseless.

by LawrenceDavis on Sep 27, 2009 6:45 PM MDT up reply actions

Oh man…lighten up. This is a Broncos fan site, what are you expecting? Objectivity? The Broncos were completely trashed and bashed by the MSM and now that we’re 3-0 don’t be surprised if some fans want to gloat about it a bit. I don’t know why you’d even bother to be distraught about it.

"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!

by PosterNutbag on Sep 27, 2009 6:51 PM MDT up reply actions

I understand
But, at the same time, it seems to be all anyone is focusing on, the fact that people didn't predict the team to be world-beaters. It's infused in nearly every post at this point. I want to read about the team. I want to have discourse about the team. Not the media.

I expect this type of behavior out of Purple Row. They’re new to success. But the Broncos have been one of the most successful and popular teams of the last 30 years. We should be better than this.

by LawrenceDavis on Sep 27, 2009 6:55 PM MDT up reply actions

I hear what you’re saying and I don’t typically participate in the MSM bashing too much. However, this was by far the most antagonistic that I’ve ever seen the media against the Broncos and it led to an “us against the world” feeling for those that refused to believe all of the negativity. It seems perfectly reasonable to me that some of the fans are hitting back after the beating we’ve taken.

"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!

by PosterNutbag on Sep 27, 2009 7:00 PM MDT up reply actions

I can assure you that I focus on more than the MSM

The above statement was simply a generalized response regarding the typical MSM rhetoric. As for whether or not Porkchop actually watched the game or not, clearly my statement was speculative (not baseless) and may or may not be accurate as is your statement guaranteeing that he did. FYI, for the statement to be baseless it would have to be without foundation, I based the statement on the fact that even after the first 2 W’s his reporting was essentially reporting the MSM party line on our Bronc’s. What do you base your statement that you can guarantee he was watching on ???

"as in football so in life"

by asinsoin on Sep 27, 2009 7:30 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes, this season’s preview coverage was doom and gloom. Do you know why? Because we had a very t umultuous offseason filled with highly-publicized problems.

Certainly this is not a good reason to base all the coverage off of, but the new regime does a tremendous job of limiting information and limiting access, so, at a certain point, you have to just look at it from the perspective of a team, which was not very good last season, lost some players and replaced half the roster. How often does that work out, honestly? What proof did we have that the folks in place currently were better at their jobs than most others in the league?

Logistically, many teams make sweeping changes as the Broncos did this season each season. And, historically, it very rarely works out. Combine that with the limited access and you have zero reason to think the team would improve like it has.

The only folks who seemed to be pretty high on the team were Bill Simmons and the fans here. Kudos to you folks. I was hoping for a .500 season and now I’m hoping for a WC/division title.

Now, can we PLEASE just focus on the team? I’m begging you.

Well LD, I'd like nothing more...

However when you make remarks like “that’s ignorant” and “Baseless” please be prepared to defend your remarks. I can’t believe you’re actually trying to make a defense for Porkchop by saying that essentailly that was the conventional wisdom and considering how many other teams make changes and fail who can blame him. My point was that even after the first 2 games he held to the party line which would indicate that he either wsan’t watching or was discounting the W’s due to the level of competition. Your attempt to defend his position is actually pretty pathetic. Next time maybe you’ll reconsider your baseless and ignorant statements before you call someone out for their justifiable perspective.

"as in football so in life"

So you say that you just want to focus on the team and in this thread alone there are many opportunities to do just that and comment about the team. And yet your only response was re:the MSM posts. "as in football so in life"

by asinsoin on Sep 27, 2009 9:55 PM MDT up reply actions

The problem, Mr Davis, is that the media painted this incredibly awful picture of Denver for two months. For any fan that would seem like a lifetime. You have former players calling our front seven “garbage” and sports pundits going out of their way to interject their points about how terrible Denver was going to be this year.

There was no objective reporting, despite the claims you made, to justify the lashing we took on a daily basis. Nobody spoke of how improved our secondary would be – even though I pretty much wrote articles for them through e-mails. My points, while amateurish, we’re not unfounded and as a reporter its your job to examine both sides.

So my question to you is this – how come a 23 year old car salesman saw something in this team and professional journalists did not? I guarantee I don’t have the experience anyone on ESPN, NFLN, or the DP have in that area, and yet I figured it out.

I’ll tell you why – because the MSM had already taken a stance on Denver and couldn’t go back on it. The same reason why Denver is on everyone’s “most shocking 3-0” team list. If they lose to the Cowboys I will bet the clothes on my back that they will be crucified and everything accomplished thus far will be attributed to the weakness of the teams we faced. Even though we’re giving up an average of just over 5 points a game.

And all we’d like is to see some extended highlight reels on Sportscenter or some validation from sticking to our guns and drinking the “kool-aid” all preseason long.

And none of it is there.

So pardon us as we gloat about believing in a team that has to lose 13 games in a row to meet the expectations of what most analysts.

What’s with the hair pulling? Is that all Seymour can do? Hopefully we get Eddie involved a bit more next week but I guess what’s it matter if we’re winning. The only problem for some of these guys is that we are deep in the skill position area on offense.

Two things

One, this win was more dominating that our win over them last year. They were never really in it. Even our “failures” were an indication of the style by which this team succeeds. The failed 4th down conversion left the Raiders in a deep hole they were unable to get out of. McDaniels went for it in the first place because he trusted his defense to preserve the advantage. As I wrote earlier, his style appears to be, “Accumulate small advantages. Give none back.” The TD was in essence a continuation of that drive, thanks to the defense. Note that McDaniels deferred on winning the coin toss, thus opening on defense. When’s the last time we did that?

Two, I had to grin when the announcers allowed that McDaniels had “the Midas touch,” because all of the new players have fit in so well. Pretty lucky, huh?

Agreed Fans have power. I have been a Raider fan for 30 years. Today I am so frustrated it hurts. Al Davis needs to admit his mistake and get Russell out. We are a good QB from being a playoff team. I don’t think I can remember a QB play this bad in all my years of watching the Raiders. There is time left to save this season. Make the switch Al. Russell will never be a winning QB in the NFL. He is a bust. Maybe if the fans quit going to games, and the play in an empty stadium, Al will be forced to put a winning team out there. It is getting very painful to watch. Right now, this offence is an embarassment and will be the butt of jokes until Russell is out of Oakland.

Raiders announcer Greg Papa on the Broncos

Hey guys, I can’t transcribe the whole thing because I was listening in the car on the way home, but I heard the Raiders radio post-game show and was pleasantly surprised to hear some of these things from their announcer Greg Papa.

He basically said, “I think we, or at least I, was wrong about the Broncos” and analyzed how his opinion turned around slowly. Said he originally felt like the Raiders were the 2nd best team in the AFC West after the Chargers and the first week didn’t do anything to change his mind (fair enough), but slowly the Broncos have been changing his mind. But the best part to hear was that he said, “With all the talk about the new coach and the Jay Cutler craziness we didn’t really talk about how many good players the Broncos brought in this off season.” He mentioned Renaldo Hill (ex Raider, of course, and criticized Dolphins for letting him go and taking Gibril W instead), Brian Dawkins, Andre Goodman, Andra Davis, especially. Said their defense looks for real. And they have a lot of weapons on offense.

Then Tom Flores said he really liked Kyle Orton, he always wins, played for a Bears team that didn’t have a lot of weapons.

But the gist of the whole discussion was that Papa basically said that he thought the way a lot of MSM people talked about the Broncos and unlike some of those guys he’s admitting he’s changed his mind after watching the Broncos today (and last week).

Can anyone answer a question for me?

Why is it not luck or a fluke play that Favre made and it’s a fluke play that Stokes made especially when they practice tip drills?

As far as the media goes it will always be the Bengals lost on a fluke play never mind they were dominated by the Broncs for the whole game minus 1.5 minutes

by papasteven on Sep 27, 2009 6:35 PM MDT reply actions

Because

one was a 40-yard throw into the end zone that Favre has made 10 other times in his career and one was a 20-yard throw that was tipped into the hands of a player.

You remember the quotes after the Immaculate Deflection? It was universally accepted that nobody had ever really seen that type of play before.

I’ve seen throws like Favre’s and I’ve seen catches like Lewis’.

That’s why.

by LawrenceDavis on Sep 27, 2009 6:37 PM MDT up reply actions

True, but

Stokely is on record as saying he did break off his route and head over to the intended reciever in case BM needed a block or there was a tipped ball. That action is good football and puts you in a position to win. It is those little things that makes the difference between winning and losing. There is a little luck in every single game (not as much as baseball, but some). If you do the little things, then when it comes time to capitalize on luck, you are there.

Wherever you go, there you are.

by YosemiteSam on Sep 27, 2009 6:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Still

It was a fluke. You can admit it and still enjoy the play. I did and have watched it about 100 times since that fateful day.

Someone will have a play identical to Favre’s this season. I liken Favre’s play to the Hail Mary to Rod Smith against the Skins years ago. Nothing tremendous about the playcall or the routes, just a really fun time if you’re a fan of that team.

I should point out, though, that I hate Favre. A lot.

It was good luck

and Stokley was heady enough to be in position to take advantage of it. We shouldn’t try to make it more than that. Hanging with a good team at their place and being within striking distance when that pass was launched is impressive enough. Good teams take advantage of breaks. Good teams stay close enough that they can take advantage of breaks. Denver is a good team.

by spock on Sep 27, 2009 6:51 PM MDT up reply actions

Favre even admitted

he had no idea who he was throwing to on that play. He said that as he moved around, he saw someone flash across and just threw it.

I give Lewis more credit for keeping his feet in the endzone and holding on to the ball than for Favre just throwing it in the general direction of some running across the field.

I think Favre's play...

Was a great pass and catch. Not a fluke.

The ID – in my opinion – was a lot of luck but Denver has worked on ball security, tip drill and the like pretty hard this year. It is no accident Stokely was in position for that, as Yosemite said.

Great athletes make great plays.

by TheMastermind on Sep 27, 2009 7:23 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes, but

it could’ve been tipped anywhere else – and would’ve been an incompletion. With all the talk of tip drills, it was our good luck.

I still maintain it was preparation meets opportunity

A great play by Stokely off of a lousy play by their DBs. That’s not a fluke. It’s playing better than the other team and winning the game because of it.

I’m usually the optimist, but it seems like like the opp team’s are leaving a lot of passing yards on the field. We will really shut people up when we take out a passing offense running hot. I don’t think we are getting all that much pressure with the front guys without blitzing. Funny, I found myself saying “Just throw it away Kyle” and he did!

Well...

Orton is never going to get a bust in Canton, let alone a league MVP but he’s a smart and efficient QB.

And you can say what you want about Cincy, they beat the Champs today and wrecked the Pack last week. Denver held them to six points. A win is a win.

Cleveland is the worst team in America right now, but you are supposed to beat bad teams by big margins. I’d actually have been worried had the Broncos only won by six.

And Oakland isn’t good but they have a great run game, a good OL and a stout defense. All of those things were taken away from them today. There are going to be some losses in the next few weeks but like it or not this team can play, and the MSM were plain wrong about them.

And I am proud to say that with the exception of some angry posts during the initial stages of Cutlergate, I have been on board. LOL

this is the most impressive

thing about the win today. the broncos didn’t win by scheming or really even by exploiting the raiders’ weaknesses. They won by stuffing the raiders running game and having our O-line/running backs demolish the front 7 of Oakland, one of their strong points as a team.

Sorry but...

I had a great laugh when I realized that even the Faider fans did not want to come and watch the Killer Bronco D destroy their team! That just made the start of this game real 4 me!

A report from the sports bar

.
Normally there’s a good crowd of Raider fans at our sports bar. Lots of Charger fans. Only a few Bronco fans though the team is generally cheered by fans from other teams.

I was expecting a rowdy Raider bunch viewing the game today.

Basically though, none of the Raider fans showed up, or else they were being pretty danged quiet. They certainly weren’t wearing their colors. If they were there, it was in disguise.

The game was not broadcast locally. , so I would think they watched the game via a friend’s NFL Sunday Ticket.

Not a leap of imagination, though, to wonder if they just wanted to suffer in private.

From an Orange and Blue fan from day one (my folks were part of the original South Standers): Thank you Denver Broncos. You made us all proud to be fans.

Dumvervil attacks again.

Two more sacks for DOOM. I can’t say it enough, I am sooooooo glad he is on our team. Two things happened besides the win and that was Marshall’s TD and Moreno getting his first career TD. Congrats Moreno.

I love this D. That is two straight games and we only allowed 3 FGs. The critics can say all they want about who we played, that is quite an accomplishment….period.

I have these visions...

.
of Mike Nolan just after he has assumed command of the Defense… he looks at tape of DOOM from last season, and a thing that hits him is: Elvis Dumervil was playing the wrong position. Hmm, thinks Nolan, #92 should be weak side outside linebacker in a 3-4. (Maybe more so in a 5-2?)

Like I said, a “vision”. Sheesh, gotta lay off these diet cokes for a while.

Bud weiser here but Doom is looking like the stud Shanahan never knew he had.

Shanahan, Fisher and the rest of these dweebs better get on board or the youngsters are going to take them to school.

I was wondering the same thing...

Did they say “we are going to run the 34” and then look at the personnel and see what they needed, or did they look at the personnel and decide what would work? I’m going with the latter. I noted during the games that Nolan played 52, 34, and 43 at times, depending on situation. I think that he looked at the various skill sets and decided that a 52 would be the most advantageous base. Whoda thunk?

If I recall correctly

In a recent interview, McDaniels talked about the defensive plan. Basically, they wanted to go 3-4 from the beginning. They looked at the personnel, realized the roster wasn’t even equipped for a 4-3, so they decided to dump a gradual transition in favor of an immediate and full change.

"Don't feed the trolls. Remember to be polite. And please show self-restraint in comment length!" -Me, to myself, because I need constant reminding.

I say...

If they manage 4-0 (albeit a bit of a stretch) let him wear his suits again.

Hope we work on our red zone game a little

Sorta like last week, this week we left about 19 points on the field.

Conversation nonstarters: hoping McDaniels fails, comparing Bears to Broncos, Cutler to Orton, apples to oranges, and casual drinkers to Raiders fans.

McD this week

McD is bound to be emphasizing redzone offense this week. The team HAS to do better there. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seemed we were using power blocking rather than zone blocking when we were within the 10. Maybe that’s the problem? Maybe our OLine is just not physical enough to manhandle in the redzone? Maybe more emphasis on passing since the OLine still has great pass protection? hmmmm.

On several plays

it looked to me like, with the defensive formation, a naked QB bootleg would have been a freebie. It looks like no one is assigned to cover Orton running, ever. He won’t ever be mistaken for Jesse Owens, but I bet he could run the bootleg once in a while.

Wherever you go, there you are.

Interesting observation

When he’s running North-South Orton’s so slow he looks like he’s running backward. But he moves well in the pocket and DOES execute the bootleg well. I am thinking you’re right, they might look at that a little.
