Quick Reactions on the Raider Game

Well just some quick thoughts regarding this win.

1)      I credit coach McDaniels for pounding the rock relentlessly against the Raiders, establishing an attitude for the offense, and not forcing Orton to challenge the Raiders CB’s.  He also realized the weakness in their pass defense is in the safeties and through the middle, not the edges.

2)      Any victory is a great victory over the despised Fader nation, doing them in their house again with only giving up 3 points was awesome, now don’t forget to take care of them in Denver, no repeats of last season as we all know how that turned out.

3)      Brian Dawkins is playing with a definite chip on his shoulder and I think he wants to show the Eagles that they were foolish to let him go, I hope his body can hold up through the season given the physical style of play he brings.

4)      While I am excited about a 3-0 start, I hope that this team stays grounded and does not start looking past anyone.  Credit to the coaching staff for getting this team to have that attitude through the first three games.

5)      While I credit the offense for a run heavy approach this week, I am curious of why Eddie Royal hasn’t been featured more, I also would hope that we can find a full time punt and KO returner other than Royal.

6)      I am amazed that someone with J. Russel physical skills cannot be coached or motivated to play up to his abilities.  It is obvious he has the arm, size, and even speed to be an elite QB in this league (watching him run with Doom hanging off him like a cap was pretty funny), but to have absolutely no dedication is what is amazing, I wonder if it is him or if it is the Raiders organization.  The fact that the Raiders haven’t developed any decent QB since Marc Wilson (which is a stretch) leads me to believe that it wouldn’t matter who they drafted, they are likely doomed to fail in Oakland.

7)      I was concerned with the front seven’s lack of ability to get to J. Russel early in the game, he had way too much time.  Granted it was the Raiders and it generally didn’t hurt us, but we will need more consistent pressure like the Cincinnati game.  This may be more to teams having some tape on what Nolan likes to do and adjusting to it.  But credit to Mike Nolan for being able to adjust the blitzes later in the game and get pressure.

8)      Maybe it is me, but I think DJ Williams looked great for that game, I think he is finding his game, I do wonder if we may be better served to switch Williams and Haggen some, to utilize Williams speed on the edge.

9)      Moreno definitely seems to be adjusting better to the zone blocking scheme, I do hope that coach Turner gets on him about doing spins in the hole, that may work in college and on occasion in the NFL, but usually trying a spin in the hole results in getting blasted and the ball getting ripped out.

10)   Ryan “Iron™”  Clady better get an all pro honor this year, seeing Seymour’s frustration at the end of the game is the telling stat for how good he is.

11)   I am guessing Mike Shanahan is kicking himself in the ass for hiring Slowvik as a DC and not firing him after last season.  Granted it is only three games and two are against some medicore offenses in Oakland and Cleveland, but this defense is showing so much more energy, focus, and attitude, I have to ask myself why couldn't Shanahan see what everyone else saw last year.

12)   With Nolan’s success (and hopefully continued success this year), I am guessing he may be getting another HC opportunity in the league, I hope it isn’t for a couple of years at least.

IMO

The lack of pressure on JR was the Broncos strategy. By taking away their running game, they didn’t need to pressure him. Guru said it best, put 9 in the box and make JR beat us. It won’t happen. JR can’t beat anyone when they know the pass is coming! Thank goodness for great coaching. GO BRONCOS!

Broncos Defense and balanced offense result in big win

The two interceptions cost the Raiders big time. Then another fumble that Dawkins
recovered.

I watched pregame video at fsg that said the Broncos would win if the Raiders were held below 120 yards rushing, and the Raiders were held to just 95 yards.

Total Broncos rushing was 215 yard. Buckhalter and Moreno are really racking up yardage. Marshall finally caught a TD pass, and looked very sharp this week.

The next two games are really going to be tough with Dallas, and NE. I think Dallas is
beatable, but I am not sure the Broncos can handle New England.

I think so...

Yea I’m thinking Dallas is beatable since their secondary defense is suspect…it’s exactly what we’d need to bolster the offense from a statistical standpoint. Maybe by then, Orton, Marshall, and Royal will be clicking on all cylinders…

Why in the hell would Nolan take a head coaching job?

He’s a defensive coordinator…he is not a head coach. Period, he has learned his lesson and now he wants to win the Super Bowl.

Question of desire

I think Nolan will have many opportunities in the coming season(s), but the real question is what does he want. If Josh and he co-exist and win, then that may be enough for him. If he really want to call the shots, then he will get another opportunity.

Lastly, if he does want it, will he get the job over the long list of candidates that will be available next year (Shanny, Cower, Chucky, etc.). For the Broncos sake, I hope not.

QB Coaching

I found it interesting that Rich Gannon commented that the Raiders had one of the best QB coaches in the league. Gannon could not understand why Russell has not improved given the quality of the QB coach. Maybe he should know since he was with the Raiders with the same coach.

Was that the same coach,

Gruden was the HC, I thought it was the idiot that went to coach Nebraska that was the QB coach back then, I could be wrong.

I was listening to JT the Brick on the way home from work tonight

And from what I heard him saying, the Raiders brought in Paul Hackett to mentor and tutor The Hutt. I guess the guy is pretty well respected as a QB coach, though after this gig he is going to be watching his stock plummet.

Gannon echoed those sentiments in the booth during the game

He was wondering why J Russell could be so horrible with such an excellent QB coach. I was thinking exactly what broncobear just said. You can lead a horse to water…

Easy

It’s because Russell is lazy. I read somewhere that Russell lacks motivation and the eagerness to want to improve. After he held out and got all that money, he could care less about doing anything beyond that.

Some of these players are good in college because no money is involved…then once they get paid, they get distracted and want to do other things outside of football. What’s the point of pushing yourself to the limits when you’re getting millions?

Russell's reaction

I read this today and was incredulous, but the stories are all over the news.

They booed Russell off the field when he was intercepted on the Raiders’ second drive of the game, a play where Darrius Heyward-Bey slipped and fell on his route. They booed again on the Raiders’ next drive, when Russell overthrew Heyward-Bey for another interception.

They booed every time after that when Russell took the field or threw an incomplete pass. It got so bad, left tackle Mario Henderson at one point clapped for Russell and patted his helmet while the crowd chanted, “JaMarcus sucks.”

What did Russell say of it all? That both interceptions should have been ruled defensive pass interference, and that other than that, “I think I did all right. … I try to play with no regrets.”

He completed two passes to a wide receiver, both on the same second-quarter drive to Louis Murphy. Eight passes were check down screens to the running backs, and two went to tight end Zach Miller.

I think I did all right? I think he did some acid….no wonder they started just running out the clock for us. It was the firs thing the two teams agreed on all day.

Number 11

Shanahan is an idiot. Plain and simple the guy is way out of his league now and duped Bowlen into giving him money when Bowlen should have offed his butt 3 years ago. Remember Plummer? Enough said.

You are probably right

however things happen for a reason and I am glad it worked out this way. I am glad we got McDaniels. Shanny wasn’t willing to focus at all on the defensive side and it has showed. I know it is only 3 games, yet what a turnaround..

Glimpses of Greatness

Moreno is going to be a beast, IMO. He is still making far too many rookie mistakes. Maybe he is still wanting to “win the game”, “be the man”, etc. As soon as he settles down, has more patience (he often followed his blocker too closely and jitterbugged before he made his cut), makes only ONE cut (those spin moves in the hole bother me), he is going to be one of the great ones. I can already see glimpses of that greatness. In a way it reminds me of Cutler’s impatience and wanting to win the game but then making stupid mistakes. Sometimes being overly competitive can work against you. But wow! Buckhalter is looking great so far. Even Lamont Jordan had some decent runs today. Hillis seems a little out of it the last two games.

agree on buckhalter and moreno but refuse to give jordan any props

i would say he’s mcd’s kryptonite, but that would be a bad analogy since superman doesn’t have man-love for kryptonite. jordan is mcd’s crack (as in cocaine, not butt). 4th and goal, setting the tone for the game, you have slippery/patient buckhalter or ferocious moreno (i think at that point hillis was already out?), and you go with jordan??? ugh, please. save jordan for mop-up time.

I think once Moreno gets used to being in the NFL, he will be one of the best.
Number 10 Right now Clady is the best in the league, if he keeps this up, it would be an insult if he didn’t start in the Pro Bowl
Number 12 I hope he won’t be leaving us anytime soon

Number 13

Marshall is getting in synch with Orton. Two plays I noticed in the 4th Quarter. The first, Marshall takes off on a streak, but the CB releases him to the SAF. The old Marshall would try to go deep, but this time he breaks off to a curl in the crease and Orton hits him where no defender can get to the ball. Great read – great play.

Then, at the end of the game, on 4th and 2, Orton hits Marshall on a shallow even with Asamouga in coverage.

Orton already seems to have good chemistry with Gaffney and Stokely. As he develops it with Marshall and Royal this could be a very tough offense to game plan against.

by SlowWhiteGuy on Sep 27, 2009 10:48 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Good call.

I think it has to do with BM learning the playbook as well. Both players have to make the same read (in many cases) which determines the route. I think Orton has this down pretty well now as do Stokes and Gaff. BM is catching on, and I’m guessing if everything about McDolan coming out of Dove Valley regarding how good they are as coaches, and if they make the playoffs, BM might reconsider whether Denver is a good fit for him.

I think there is more yet in the playbook. All it takes on any route behind the LBs is one missed tackle (or another receiver ‘getting in the way’ of the FS) to spring a TD. We saw some of that this week in other games. I wonder if that can be schemed?

But I have no idea what is up with Royal. Or Hillis for that matter.

Wherever you go, there you are.

by YosemiteSam on Sep 27, 2009 11:17 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

More Playbook

Absolutely there is more to come. Defenses historically mature sooner than offenses because they have to be by nature more flexible and instinctive. Offenses mature later because they rely more on planning. The offensive players have to learn the plays by heart. They know, or should know, exactly what they are supposed to do on every play.

We are only now seeing some flashes of what the offense can be. Two examples: Orton looks much more comfortable in the pocket, and (2) the OLine opened up very good running lanes against a very good jokeland Dline. The redzone problems, imo, were largely McD trying to run a power blocking scheme instead of a zone blocking scheme. Our guys could not out-muscle the jokeland Dline beasts. Yet our pass protection was still outstanding. The other issue was simply the WR’s not running good routes and/or being unable to break coverages.

I think Royal is OK. He did not get lot of throws because he was largely covered by Asomugha. Hillis, on the other hand, is of some concern. He looks mentally and physically out of it the last two games.

Don’t worry about the pressure. The Raiders went Max Protection. You have to go kitchen sink to get through that.

I’m going to do a full post on Royal and look at every play he has run this year. I want to get to the bottom of this.

And lastly, Ryan Clady is right now as good as Gary Zimmerman in is prime…I hasten to say better, but…if the shoe freakin’ fits, home boy.

Alright everyone

Things have gone right so far but (without being a complete downer) I would like to bring some peoples feet just a little closer to the ground if I may. First of all I would like to say I am very excited to see this team progress and I do believe this team is headed in the right direction. I am especially impressed with this new look defense, but as I stated in an earlier post the Broncos had to win these first 3 games to have any hopes in posting a better than average record this season. Make no mistake we are to murderers row on the schedule. Starting with next Sunday we will truly find out how far this team will go this season. Personally if we are able to win 1 out of the next 3 I will be happy and willing to say this team is becoming a legit contender in a hurry. But please everyone remember Dallas does not have the offensive line of the Browns or the QB play of the Raiders. This next game will be a huge test of our defensive line as the Cowboys have a very good running game and I believe that Orton will tested all day by the defensive line of the Cowboys. Don’t get me wrong I DO believe the Broncos can win this game but it will take a very clean game with very few mistakes. I live in Texas and have been watching all the Dallas games to kind of scout them out. There will be 2 keys for our defense. 1.) Stop the run 2.) Get pressure on Romo.
Make no mistake I am thrilled with our team so far especially after seeing what Cincinnati has done after we held their offense in check but the real test is coming over the next 7 weeks. The schedule now turns brutal and question is will our team respond to adversity or will they hit the wall and fold. One things for sure I am really excited to see what happens!!!!!!!

I'm positive but...

Felix Jones scares me quite a lot. He was carving it up last year before getting hurt. Sounds like he’s back this year.

He’s averaging over 9 a carry though not on many carries. If Barber can play too, then this should be a bigger test (vs the run) than oakland because of the respect you have to give to the pass.

Dallas is a game I’m a little worried about. The way they’re playing though, Denver should still win.

Dallas

Dallas is a lot like last year’s Broncos. High scoring offense, terrible defense. My thinking is that we win this game pretty easy. Our D shuts down their offense and our O can run and pass on their D (ranked #32 in the league). The game that really scares me is the Ravens game in their stadium.

by Endzone on Sep 28, 2009 10:57 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yup that's what I see

The offense is potent, prone to mistakes at key times. The defense has given up a ton of points, TB ran on them and the Gmen passed on them. Hard to know what we’ll see from them.

A few thoughts

I dont think that BDawk is trying to show philly that they made a mistake. He loves being here in Denver. This is his team now, and he is going to give it everything he has, thats just the way that he is. And I dont think that he is over doing himself or setting himself up for an injury. He, in every aspect of the word, is a pro. He prepares for games like one and he keeps himself in shape like one. He will last and be fine all year long.

I was very happy to see BMarsh get some catches. And the way that he was acting on the field and sidelines. I think its taken some time, but I think he is buying into everything. He seemes like he was playing hard, and I saw him talking to McD and players on the sidelines. He looked like he was listening, adjusting, learning and having a good time. I even saw a smile on his face!

I know the cowboys are a better team than the last 2 we have faced, but McD came up with a good plan to keep the ball away from the raiders strong points on D, and I would not expect anything different against the boys. We will have a solid plan, if we exicute it well the next game should be a good one.

What an awesome start to this year!! I cant wait for more!

but there were a lot of people, some foolish Philadelphia fans, who thought he was washed up and a liability in coverage. He is definitely playing to those guys.

Cowbys on the Road After a Monday Night Game

I suppose that will be the excuse when we are 4-0. Mostly, we have just played college teams so far, like that road win in CIN (who just does not seem to be able to beat anyone) and the domination of the Raiders (who should have been 0-2 with their terrible performance on the road in SD and pure luck on the road in KC).

The more of this I read in the MSM the better. I am happy to have the MSM consider us the worst 3-0 team in the league. The longer the Broncos are underappreciated, the more likely the Broncos will win, which is the only bottom line in this business. Great start Coach McDaniels.

I don’t think Shanahan is kicking himself. This defense is entirely different on every level and I just don’t think Shanahan would have made those changes or put in that effort. He is just a different coach.

This defense has more energy because it is in no way last years defense.

  1. I think Nolan will be here a year or two then move on. By then the defense will hopefully be established and our younger guys will have played in it awhile. At that point we just try to keep the culture going. Happens around the league all the time. However, I say we offer Martindale and Nunnely lifetime contracts!

djw showing up was the best part of this game for me. bmarsh showing up was up there, but i figure’d that was just a matter of effort/preparation and gameplanning.

djw was awesome yesterday, and let’s keep in mind that there were not a ton of opportunities given the lack of raiders’ offensive plays. i hope he reaches his potential. he just needs to wake up grumpy and come into the game wanting to tear off heads …

also, props to prater and the ST. i love watching the coverage team THUMPING people inside the 20yd line. and i imagine they’ll only get better when larsen comes back (and on the other side when mcd finally replaces royal as returner).

DJ had a great game! led the team in tackles, and had a forced fumble
