Horse Tracks 9/28/09 - Broncos dominate Raiders; Hamilton, Harris, A. Smith, Hillis injured
Denver rookie head coach Josh McDaniels doesn't have a grasp on how to build a team - John Clayton, April 23rd, 2009
Good MORNING, MHR Friends! Honestly, I don't care who's on the schedule. When you give up a mere 16 points over three games, you have a real defense. The 2009 Broncos defense has allowed the fewest points through three weeks, is now #1 in yards allowed, #7 in rushing yards allowed and #2 in passing yards allowed. The Broncos gave up a puny 137 yards of total offense yesterday. Last time these two met, the Broncos allowed the Raiders 318 yards. However you look at it, whether the Broncos go on to make the playoffs this year or not, there is a different feel to this team. The culture and attitude have changed, and the future is bright. Josh McDaniels, his staff and Brian Xanders know what they are doing.

there is a different feel to this team
My thoughts exactly. I think it’s seen more in the way they team plays the whole game and not just the 1st half or 3 quarters and then have to hang on.
We killed the Raiders and the Browns in every area. And yes we got lucky at the end against the Bungels — we dominated that game and deserved to win, and when you see the points they racked up against the vaunted Pittsburgh D it only makes the Orange look better.

I Don't Know About Dominated
but we played them close the entire game and gave our team a chance to win with a single score.
I think the Bengals owe us a favor, what better way to teach a team to play all 60 minutes of a game tough than to learn first hand from another team that knows this? You don’t think that helped them against the Steelers?

No Worries
Looks like everything got sorted out.
We DOMINATED the Raiders. Funny thing is that we still left a lot of points on the field. We are winning games and really haven’t put the offense into Top Gear yet. Imagine if we do!

Now the real test begins.
We did very well in the JV portion of the schedule. We crushed two horrible teams and got a key away win vs a decent Cincy team. Now we get a home game vs a Dallas team coming off a short week since the Cowboys play tonight.
It’s nice to see the Broncos brimming with confidence going into the real part of their schedule. The D looks great vs run and pass. Dawkins is the man. Champ was invisible yesterday (great thing when he is a DB) and Hill made a beautiful INT.
What really excites me is BM may have some serious competition for most gifted skill player on the Broncos. Not from Eddie Royal, but from Moreno. That dude has some set of skills for a rookie. I didn’t see this one coming. Hillis and Royal have been pretty much non factors in 2009, while Gaffney, Graham and Buckhalter are wreaking havoc on opposing Ds. That’s good because there is still a lot of offensive upside yet to be tapped.
The simple fact is: if you ranked the QB position of the 32 teams in the NFL, we just played two teams that rank in the 30s. We can’t expect giveaways like the one Goodman got vs real NFL QBs. We just played two of the most incompetent QBs I’ve ever witnessed. But we killed them both and when your team is winning by three TDs, there is a lot of margin for error before you lose a ballgame.
I loved seeing all the empty seats in Oakland, but I really loved hearing all 3,746 Raider fans boo their home team yesterday. I turned up the volume and booed with them. It just crushed the home team’s spirit and made my heart flutter. JaBust Russell is well on his way out the door in Oakland and the Raiders are headed to another Top 5 overall pick (which they’ll likely waste). Hey Bey Bey is worthless at WRs. Just worthless & I LOVE IT.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.

We were underdogs against both Cincy and Oakland
…and we’ve had to hear about Oakland’s dominating defense for several weeks now.
Klis, Paige, Mike Evans, and Sandy Clough all picked the Raiders yesterday. The Vegas money was on Oakland.
So I get a bit tired of hearing how we’ve beaten JV teams. Oakland should have beaten San Diego (and should have lost to KC). Which goes to show that every NFL team can be tough on any given Sunday.
Having said all that, I agree with you that we need to put in a good performance against the Cowboys.
Listening to Les Shapiro this morning, one would come away thinking the Broncos don’t belong on the same field as the Cowboys. According to Shapiro, the Cowboys are far superior — a pronouncement he claims is based on his having “looked up and down the rosters.”
Really? Does Dallas have a better offensive line? Better tight ends? A better running game? A better secondary?
It may be that Dallas proves to be the better team this coming week — given that this Denver Broncos team has only really played together for 3 regular season games. But I certainly don’t believe that simply from “looking up and down the rosters.”
I look for a tough game, where the Broncos work to keep the Dallas offense off the field. And when they are on the field, I look for Denver to take away the run and scheme for pressure on Romo.
The fourth quarter could be pivotal against a Dallas team on a short week in altitude.
Time to take back that home field advantage.

Not on the Kool-Aid yet... maybe the Pedialyte
I’ve LOVED what I have seen. McDaniels thus far has made me eat every word I’ve spewed during the offseason. I’m frustrated with the Red Zone production right now, but the attitude and swagger are completely different.
That said, aren’t you at least a little intrigued to see how we adjust against a different type of opponent? Obviously the Bengals have turned out to be a talented team, but I don’t have high expectations for the Browns or Raiders. I’m interested to see if our coaching advantage continues against the rest of the league. Hands down, McDaniels is better than Wade Phillips. I’m predicting a Broncos win this week, but I’m still cautiously optimistic with all the points we’ve left on the field.
by legendarywalton on Sep 28, 2009 9:21 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
that's the only thing that bothers me
The points left on the field. I know it takes longer for a new offense to gell (and with the size of that playbook, no wonder!). We seem to be improving with every game, which is very nice to see – espeically as we get into the meat of the schedule.
I was thinking about the game yesterday, and how the 23-3 score wasn’t even as close as that…and the points left on the field. Part of me wonders if its not partly intentional. By that I mean since we have such a strong D and a lead, don’t take risks even if it means leaving points on the field. Maybe McD doesn’t care by what margin we win. Better to keep the lead safe than to risk expanding it when there is no need.

All good points, I agree.
But I’ll just encourage you to stop listening to Shapiro & Armstrong in the mornings, just for your health. I use to also listen to them but a couple weeks ago I finally stopped and it’s almost like having a new lease on my radio listening life! :) I listen to Vic and Gary now on 1600 am during the same time slot. Check ’em out.
I’m fine with criticism of the Broncos but Armstrong and Shapiro’s shtick finally wore thin. Their critiques didn’t match up with reality, with how the end results of the games turned out. They’d fit in fine at ESPN. I wonder if they truly believe their crap.
And people might call Vic and Gary homers with their ties with CBS4 and the Broncos and such, but they are FAR more objective with their overall opinions. Plus, they seem more down to earth. Les and Jim, on the other hand, are pretty pretentious IMO.
Just my 2 cents brother….

The Browns and Raiders are as JV as it gets. Those two will be picking very high in the 2010 draft. Both teams are a complete mess right now with no hopeful signs on the immediate horizon.
The Bengals are pretty good. That was a great away win for Denver, lucky or not.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.

What is Nice
Is that we are winning against those teams that are down in the NFL all across the board and honestly we really aren’t playing to the full potential of the team yet. We are playing tough so these things combined are really more impressive to me than the wins themselves.

My favorite play yesterday.
One play that I freaking loved yesterday was Buckhalter’s 34-yard run off LT. Ryan Harris pulled all the way from RT and stunned the LB with a massive block that opened the whole. Ryan Harris is a talented player.
At the same time, Eddie Royal ran a 60 yards straight down the field at full speed pretending to be the target of an imaginary bomb. The DB locked in on Eddie without even looking back to see Buckhalter just 10 yards behind him running full speed down the sideline. Very cerebral play by Eddie Royal! Why block the DB when you can simply run him away from the action.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.

Good play
My three favorite offensive plays: Orton’s two bullets to Marshall — the second against Asomugha; and Moreno’s run where he refused to go down until the defense eventually ganged up and lifted him off the ground to stop he from driving forward.
Moreno falls forward for two extra yards every run.

Man, I love me some Eddie Royal. Now, I do have to wonder what he really thinks about his production in the system so far. Obviously he’ll give stock answers about wins and the team, but he doesn’t get paid if he doesn’t make any catches. I personally believe that he’s not anything like that… essentially the anti-pro wide receiver, but it has to be a bit frustrating. Maybe we can get an article on why he hasn’t produced? Is he being shadowed more closely, is he getting the routes that work as a decoy, etc.
To see someone with 90 catches last year, to have literally no production in the passing game— it’s just kind of odd, I guess. No, I don’t have him in fantasy either…
by legendarywalton on Sep 28, 2009 9:29 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
From the limited amount I've seen
Royal is getting serious coverage most of the time. My guess is that teams don’t think Marshall is a threat given his attitude in training camp and suspension. Royal typically sees double-coverage. That will be changing as Marshall is getting it and Stokely will be back soon. I actually would LOVE to see teams continue to take away Royal…cause then we’ll see Stokes and Marsh open all day long.

I had a revelation during the game yesterday...
I think that every single receiver has an option route. That’s why we haven’t “clicked” on offense, because it requires the QB and the receiver to make the exact same read. After the read then, there also needs to be perfect timing. Eddie’s been thrown at a lot, but it’s just been out of reach (high, low, to the side… basically everywhere but in his hands). After I saw Marshall’s TD yesterday, I finally got it— and so did BMarsh.
I think this offense will continue to improve well into next season. I take it all back about this offense… it’s literally revolutionary. I don’t know of any team that has given such a cerebral responsibility to all of its wide outs. It’s kind of a hybrid Texas Tech/New England Pats system, taken to the extreme.
Eddie will be fine, but it might just take a while.

Completely agree about the O. Did you notice that a “staple” of this offense, the bubble screen, was completely non-existent yesterday? That’s some flexibility right there when you can have one element of your game completely missing because you’ve got other plans.
This is what we wanted...
Hey, look what we got!
by pubkeeper on Sep 28, 2009 11:02 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed.
Bubble screen was deemed worthless because of the raiders over-emphasis on speed. I’ve never seen an organization handicap itself so badly. By emphasizing 40 times, Al is literally saying, “Please, run right over us, because we’re really fast but not that big”. That’s why the Seymour trade was big for them, it added a dimension of size that will help them going forward.
I did like the “Large Man” Screen package we ran multiple times to Daniel Graham. One of them was blown up by pressure and Orton had to throw it high, but it would have gone for as much yardage as the one we ran at the end of the game. That’s a situation where we tailored our strength (quick linemen) with their weakness (a large ball carrier that can run over fast DBs). Again, just fantastic game planning.
by legendarywalton on Sep 28, 2009 11:27 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
We ran the ball so many times yesterday that Eddie didn’t see a lot of passes. I wouldn’t even read into it. We’ll have to pass more in the future because we won’t be playing teams as terrible as Cleveland and Oakland every week. I enjoy watching Denver play with a 3 TD lead, but I don’t expect it will be this easy vs the San Diego’s and Baltimore’s coming up.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.

I loved the pass to B Marsh to end the game…clutch play against one of THE best CBs in the league. Orton and B Marsh were on the wavelength for that play…we are starting to see them get in tune and it will spell big things for our passing game in the future.

Moreno’s TD Run. Not because of the play itself but that after Seymour’s antics we decided to run it straight at his side and scored. Now that is a team mentality!

Asked by a Bay-area reporter if he made a mistake with his hair-pulling tactic, Seymour replied: “It was not a mistake, brother. Next question.”

It's like deja vu...
That sort of thing happens in my house all the time. The only difference here is that the players are 22 months and almost 3.
The play was reminescent of Vince Wolforks three-suspendable infractions rampage against Cutler last year. Seymour should have got two personal fouls on the play, as he had both hands under Clady’s facemask. He was probably going for the eyes, as thats what you are taught to do when attacked by a bear.
He got punked all day, and Ioved it.

Defense playing great and the special teams is making plays! You can see the improvement of the team week after week. Offense starting to gel, we just need consistency in the red-zone, for the next games we have to be better than 2-6 in the red-zone in order to win a few of those. Go Broncos!

A lot of other people could see what was going on with this team and that there really was something different – and they’re not letting us down.
Feeling good, will not apologize for the games Denver has won. Cincy is for real. There’s no such thing as luck. There is only hard work and preparation and winners are the people who use these things to take advantage of opportunity. Cleveland and Oakland are bad teams but you aren’t supposed to beat bad teams you are supposed to dominate them, and Denver did that.
I happen to agree that Dallas is overrated but they have a lot of talent and will crush you if you go to sleep on them. I can’t wait to see how McDaniels puts this one together. Should be an exciting game, however it comes out. One thing for sure, Denver will be prepared, win or lose.
This team looks better every week on both sides of the ball and you can clearly see it every week. I like Orton’s progression. He is slowly shedding his bad habits and I was very pleased to see that his pocket presence has improved even since last week, and he threw away a few balls rather than sit back and take the sack.
You can literally see him becoming a better player before your very eyes. Sure, the only way he’s ever going to Canton is on a tour bus but for now he’s our guy and he’s playing very well. And so are his team mates.
I am stoked. Even Stokeley’d. LOL

Totally agree
What worries me to an extent is how much guys like Clayton (and some of the people discussed earlier here) are setting the Broncos up here. Let’s put it this way, yes the first three games of the season were “easier” than the next 5 or so, but 1) You still have to take care of business; 2) they weren’t favored in two of those games 3) the Bengals have proven themselves to be legit.
And 4) If they go 2 and 2 in these next 4 games they’d be 5-2 and that’d be pretty good. But people like Clayton will just say “see? They went 2 and 2 in the tougher part of their schedule. I’m still not impressed.” Basically they’ll keep upping the bar to look “right.”
Well, what is “right”? What would be a win for the Broncos? The Broncos were predicted by some people to finish last in the division. Is it not clear by now that they are at least the 2nd best team in the division, and very possibly close or even with the Chargers, especially given the latter’s injuries? No matter WHAT happens in this next, tougher stretch of games, I’d advise ignoring the stubborn pricks in the media and using your own judgment to see the team’s progression. Because to anyone who is actually looking at them with open eyes, they have a better team then people expected and they have a plan.

He just won't admit he might be wrong
he isn’t ready to throw in the towel with Washington who is 1-2 against the Giants, St Louis, and Detroit. Remember, the NFC East is the best division ever to be imagined, so Washington has to be great! And I said they would be good, so they can’t be bad, right?
It is indeed infuriating that unless we go 3-0 in the next three games, they will all say “see, they’ve lost a game! they are truly terrible.”

Any updates on the injuries?
Couldn’t find anything in the links.
I’ll stand up and proudly say I was wrong about this team. Sure, I looked at their schedule and thought that 3-0 would be possible out of the gate, but the defense is SO MUCH better than I thought it would be. We really don’t need a great qb …. so far.
Where will you be on October 1st, 2009 at 6:45 PM Mountain Time?

I like LaMont's attitude.
“…if you want to cheer for Jay Cutler, go to Chicago,” Broncos running back LaMont Jordan said. “If you don’t like our head coach, find another team.”
Like NYC said…these guys know what they’re doing.

Off topic but news from another rookie head coach
Bucs Raheem Morris just named Josh Johnson starting QB with Josh Freeman as his backup. Byron Leftwich is now No. 3 QB.
Now if he could only replace his entire defense, poor guy.

Statistics
I just don’t understand this:
#1 in yards allowed, #7 in rushing yards allowed and #2 in passing yards allowed.
I guess that means other defenses are far more imbalanced? Well, it is early in the season. But I can’t help but smile!
