Broncos winning the "easy" games
After watching us absolutely own the faders this week I was watching the news when I caught a locker-room interview with Kyle Orton that struck a nerve. Read on after the jump and see if it strikes a nerve with you as well as I give my thoughts on this year's Broncos to date and some thoughts from our first 3 weeks.
Question (as well as I can remember it): So what do you guys think of the tough part of the schedule coming up now that you've been through some easy games?
Kyle Orton Answer: I don't know...I've never played an "easy" NFL game...and I've played in a lot of games in the NFL. None of them have been "easy".
I personnally love this answer. #1: it was totally off the cuff. Orton didn't think about it at all, he just responded. #2: It points out something most people who watch the NFL don't get and maybe never will...this is a professional football league. It doesn't matter which team you play -- EVERY team is a challenge EVERY week.
So many people are wrapped up in how difficult the middle of our scheudle is and how "easy" the first three games looked. I am even guilty of this to some extent...but we are winning games and that is what matters. Our team is executing our game plans (and we actually friggin have a game plan on defense!!! WOOO HOOOO!!!).
Now that we've had 3 weeks under our belts of seeing what our team is going to do, let me give you some thoughts about our Denver Broncos:
Offense:
- As I commented elsewhere, I think the only thing I would like to see will be how Orton responds when the game is all on him. I think Baltimore will be that test for us. If there is any team that can shut down our running game, it will be the Ravens. I want to see how Orton handles it when the game is on his arm...not to say he needs to sling the ball 40 yards+, but does he confidently lead us and make quick, smart reads to find the open guy.
- Knowshon and Buckhalter are looking better every week. These guys are moving us forward, picking up yards after being hit, breaking long runs through the big holes our line are creating, and being tough Broncos running backs. LOVE IT
- I'm a Hillis fan, but he isn't looking good when he gets a carry from the backfield so far this year. I would like to see him used more in the passing game, but I'm okay with him being our 3rd back the rest of the season and not getting even 30 carries this year.
- Marshall is going to be the key to opening up our passing game in the next three weeks. We saw a glimpse this week of what he can do in this offense. Teams are going to have to start doubling him now that he is getting the system down and making plays.
- Royal is going to be bigger, but probably not 1000 yards or 100 catches this year. Marshall getting attention will get Royal out of his funk (right now teams are doubling him in the passing game). With how many weapons we have and how smart Orton is, I don't see Royal getting tons of catches. I like Stokely to get a 100 catches before Marshall or Royal if he gets healthy actually.
- Our Offensive Line ROCKS! I know most people don't get this kind of thing, but these guys are going to make us a solid threat on offense for years to come...pass protection, opening lanes in the running game...these guys play solid every week.
Special Teams
- We don't have a superb return game...if anything dissapoints me about our team this year this is it. We never see good angles to get an idea of what is happening downfield, but we just don't seem to be able to protect our returner very well and give him much to work with.
- Conversely our coverage has been superb! This is a welcome change from last year. Even when we kicked to Cribbs against Cleveland (which is nuts) we were there and swarming him right away. Great improvements have been made here by the coaching staff and the new players we have participating in Special Teams.
Defense
- WOW...I knew with what moves McDaniels was making (hiring Nolan, free agents he brought in, etc) that we had the POTENTIAL for really cool stuff on D. But these guys have made a dramatic turn around for our team in a VERY short amount of time.
- Nolan should get Coordinater of the year award even if we go .500 the rest of the season just for being able to field this in the span of one off season.
- We may get beat a few times in the next month, but it is NOT going to be easy to score on this defense. These guys are making teams earn every yard. We haven't had big plays kill us like we had all the time last year. I'd love to see what this defense can do against New Orleans honestly...but I'll settle for the cowgirls.
- Doom is finally being used properly. He can play line, but he doesn't have what it takes to be a run-stopper in a 4 - 3. That just doesn't work. His size is PERFECT for an OLB in a 3 - 4 though and it is showing. He will overshadow Merriman within 3 years if he stays healthy for sure. It is very scary that he is getting better and has more to learn as a LB.
- Veteran DBs make QBs pay for bad mistakes. I love the upgrades in 3 of our 4 starting DBs. Champ is the man and now has a cast back there that compliments him perfectly.
- These guys aren't an afterthought anymore. They are one of the primary reasons we are winning games. I love it...run the ball on offense and clobber people on defense.
- We are going to have more turnovers after 6 games this year than we had all of last year.
What do you guys think? Discuss!!! Give me your thoughts and call me out on any BS you notice.

doom will surpass merriman’s sack total this season
by lolcopter on Sep 28, 2009 3:06 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
LOL
Yeah…if he keeps up this rate he will have 31 1/2 sacks or so by the end of the year??? What is very scary is that we might actually see that. I don’t know what team can stop Doom all game long…unless they start consistently assigning two blockers to him (which I would LOVE)….in which case the rest of our guys will start getting sacks from their one-on-one match ups.

Let other teams
double team Doom. I’m sure he’d be more that happy to share the sacks… :o)

Good point, bchiper
If you stope him, you leave the door open for the D line and Davis, DJ and Haggan. That helps you exactly how?

Heck yes
That’s what I am LOVING about this defense…they play team ball…want to stop one guy…sure thing. We have 10 other guys on the field who will make you pay. I love me some great team defense. I love how we have guys that are super talents making big plays and guys that no one knew before the season started making big plays too (example: Haggan had a great sack this game. Davis has had some monster games the first two weeks, etc)

What gets me
is you see teams do this all the time. They’ll focus on a Lewis or Harrison (or Doom) only to open the door for someone else. That’s what I like about this D so far, they play together

I can't remember who it was...
but I saw an interview today that I just loved, it was a defensive player that was complimenting his team mates by saying that it feels great to study film and see all 11 guys laying themselves out there so their teammates can make plays. Doom would gladly take a dbl team if it meant someone else could shine for a game, gotta love that team first mentality

I seriously don't think that McD will ever let the game come down to ONE player...
I see what you mean about the Ravens shutting down the run game or at least the hypothetical possibility but one thing that really stands out about this team is the game planning so that every player is involved… I have a feeling that Orton will NEVER really feel that the whole game is on his shoulders…When you look at all the comments from players and coaches one thing that really stands out is the overwhelming confidence in McD’s game planning!!! They have faith in his game plan and they execute it, as Orton said this week. IF the Ravens should shut down the run game their will be another weakness that he will have prepped his team to exploit. I mean I do agree that there are a few balls that Orton is throwing away a little too soon but there a few factors behind that:
1. He is still trying to adjust his mental clock from Chicago… In Chicago he had time to look at his first read then dump it off, and man is he good at dumping it off, look at his stats mostly… so few sacks, no int’s!!!
2. Timing with his receivers, which seems to be getting better each week, but it takes time to get to the point where things come automatic, instinctual, instead of thinking it out. Kind of like when your learning a new language, your really getting it when you begin to THINK in the new language. I have seen moments of that especially with Stoke and Gaffney.
3. Fear of loosing the game for his team…
The thing I really like about this team is you see progress each week and this schedule has proven to be perfect for bringing along a team that has been built from scratch. Something I read today really does catch the whole essence of why there is so much more confidence in this team and in it’s fans as opposed to last year, and that is this team is playing like a team !!!! They game plan and practice like a team and if they win it’s a team win and if they lose it will be a team loss but one thing for sure this team is fighting for 60 minutes and if they do go down they will go down fighting. What more can you ask as a fan.

Almost my thoughts exactly, Lovewatchin
If we game-plan well, and play hard, smart, team-oriented football, and continue to progress every week, I’ll take whatever record follows (and it won’t be bad, either). Only mild disagreement is with In regards to your points 1 and 3. I think that maybe KO has already fixed his mental clock, but I think it is McD that is really stressing the no-turnovers mindset. I also think McD will tell KO when to discard the be-safe-first thing in order to win in a particular situation. Then, next easily-controlled game, it’ll be back to the “throw-aways”…I love those things, I really do!!.

I love when he throws it away. Every time that happens, I think, “See Cutler! This is how you DON’T single-handedly lose us the game!!!”

I'm not sure that I'd say I love to see him throw it away...
but I do get your point, If Cutler had been willing to throw a few away who knows… but you have to admit one way or the other Cutler, IMHO, just wouldn’t have fit in with this group of guys, I mean there just isn’t any room for hero’s, or at least guys who expect to be the hero every week!!!

Agree
Cutler and the present team might have been oil and water. Too bad, though, for Cutler. I really wonder if he maybe blew his chance to have a REALLY elite career. After all, talent AND an exceptional system is better than talent and an average system.

Ahh the road not taken...
not only that but when you factor in the O-line where would you rather play? I mean he should had a lot of grass stains on his jersey for the first three games of the season compared to Orton. All it takes is that “one” concussion or brutal hit and your career is on the line!!!

well 1 and 2 were kinda just quotes that came from Orton in his interviews...
He said something somewhere in the recent past that it is taking some time getting accustomed to the extra time in the pocket and I’ve noticed he still has happy feet once in a while, also he said something like his receivers were getting more on the same page with him this last game, at any rate I just think that it might be a little premature for us to expect there to be a perfect melding this early into the season, heck some QB / Receiver combos take years to really come together… still I see solid improvement every game… I think he even was giving Marshall kudos for a great week of practice and a good game… good to see them gelling as a team!!!!
"even a stopped clock is right twice a day" Yosemite Sam
by lovewatchinthegame on Sep 28, 2009 5:00 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I thnk I saw that interview also
It seemed to me that in Oakland he seemed much more at ease, and the throw-aways were just a bit later, and maybe even with a little more authority (if there is such a thing as an authoritative throw away). But, maybe the delay was just that the O line did such a great job on a supposedly rugged D line.. he certainly wasn’t under the duress we saw in Cincy.
by idahobronc on Sep 28, 2009 5:07 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I saw the same thing...
he just looks more comfortable in the pocket then in Cincy, you could even call it poise… part of that I am sure is just the snaps he has taken in games and practice, but I think a lot of it has to be seeing how the game planning has paid off and the confidence that comes from success, I still say you couldn’t have asked for a better schedule to build this new teams confidence, while the competition from here on out looks from challenging to brutal I have a good feeling about every game on the schedule!!!

Good post
I totally agree, and I think people are putting too much emphasis on “easy” vs. “hard” on the schedule, without even knowing exactly what that means, or if the teams that seemed “easy” are actually hard (i.e. Cincinnati being one example) and some of the hard teams may be more beatable than it appeared. So what? Orton’s response is dead on, all NFL games are “lose-able” basically, if you don’t execute your game plan, if you make stupid mistakes, if you don’t out play them.
I think your summary of the team so far seems pretty accurate too, and I’d agree, one of the only weak spots so far is the return game is pretty non-existent. They haven’t really found that guy yet. Royal’s kind of stepping in there but they don’t want to have him keep doing that. Hillis kind of blew it with his fumble but maybe deserves another chance. A Smith might get another shot when he’s 100%. That would make a big difference. But they’re getting great field position via the defense via turnovers, something they weren’t getting at all last year. If the Broncos go 3-2 over the next 5 I’ll be pretty darned happy, but also not surprised.

I don't like having Royal in the return game at all
I think he isn’t single-handedly doing anything spectacular for us there, so why take the risk? Now if he was breaking of 20 – 30 yard returns once in awhile, I’d think differently, but yeah…you are spot on my friend.

Done
and I agree.
Wasn’t A Smith supposed to get more of a shot there? I know he didn’t show much there but was great in college and since he’s a backup in secondary (though a key one already) might be worth a try. They need to keep looking for a good fit.

Pre season killed A Smith
He had a game in the preseason with like 2 or 3 drops. It was very poor and probably did it in for him.

A few weeks ago I would have agreed
But since Royal so far has been a minor player in the passing game it is nice to give him some touches in the return game. A Smith was supposed to be the man but I think he fumbled that chance away for now. Similar HIllis appears to have fumbled that chance leaving Royal as the man by default. He will break one sooner or later if he remains back there, and if not, at least the ball will be safe and sound.

I did hit it, sadaraine
And it deserved it, too!
A coup;le of quick points: Merriman is where I thought that he’d be. Every year some players have that kind of surgery and every year the pundits exult that they are already back, as good as ever, etc, etc. Nope. Not physically possible really – the surgical adhesions haven’t broken down yet and the range of motion (ROM) in the knee isn’t there yet. Maybe next year, maybe not – we’ll see. This year, Doom is better. With those arms and his leverage, he might always be.
I agree with your point on Hillis and his receiving skills. At the same time, we still haven’t fully opened the playbook – scary, isn’t that? We have a long way to go and will just keep getting better. While I never really mentioned the O-line in the offseason (cough, cough, gasp, choke) I’m happy to see them playing so well with Polumbus and Hochstein in there. Depth is a beautiful thing.

The funny thing is....
while Shanny was given a lot of credit for being able to plug in just about any running back into his system and not loose a step, it could be argued that McD is doing the same with virtually every position. Depth is a beautiful thing!!!!

Excellent post sadaraine.....you asked for thoughts so here are a couple of my mine...
Concerning the run you said:
Knowshon and Buckhalter are looking better every week. These guys are moving us forward, picking up yards after being hit, breaking long runs through the big holes our line are creating, and being tough Broncos running backs. LOVE IT
I agree, in fact I feel its an understatement. I’d never heard of Buckhalter until he became a Bronco. Somewhere I picked up that he’s had multiple knee injuries (not even sure if its real) but if he has, he is blessed with a healing gene you don’t see very often. Buck’s ability to wait for a lane and then blast through it has been a wonderful thing to watch. I’ve been a little disappointed in Moreno, but against the Raiders you could see something special. It doesn’t matter if a ‘juke’ or a ‘shoulder down plow’ is needed….he’s not affraid of either.
Concering Hillis you said:
I’m a Hillis fan
So am I, kinda wondering how much Larsen, as a FB, meant to Hillis in short runs. Might say something about Larsen.
Concerning Marshall and Royal you said:
Marshall is going to be the key to opening up our passing game in the next three weeks. We saw a glimpse this week of what he can do in this offense. Teams are going to have to start doubling him now that he is getting the system down and making plays.Royal is going to be bigger, but probably not 1000 yards or 100 catches this year. With how many weapons we have and how smart Orton is, I don’t see Royal getting tons of catches. I like Stokely to get a 100 catches before Marshall or Royal if he gets healthy actually.
There is something funny happening here…..and I like it. There has to be a reason why Brady had 50 TD’s, and many of them to Moss who seemed to have lost all coverage. A lot of that was the way they used Wes Welcker and as we are a team just melding, what is McDaniels doing? Marshall is without a doubt our most freakish pile of tallent. I was shocked in the Raider game that his most efficient production came from the slot. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Brandon become an A+ slot receiver the next few games to force double coverage in the middle and open up receivers on the outs. Just a thought.
You Said:
Our Offensive Line ROCKS!
I say: Yes it does!! You have know idea having lived in Boise as long as I did how much I love Clady…….and the rest of the line rocks also!!!
You said:
Nolan should get Coordinater of the year award even if we go .500 the rest of the season just for being able to field this in the span of one off season.
I say Red Miller loved Joe Collier…and we ended up in the Super Bowl.
I need to shorten this so I’ll make just one more comment.
You said:
We don’t have a superb return game…if anything dissapoints me about our team this year this is it. We never see good angles to get an idea of what is happening downfield, but we just don’t seem to be able to protect our returner very well and give him much to work with.

Great points sadaraine
It is exciting above all to see that these guys look like they are improving every week! Stay healthy above all, but beyond that I —
(a) am happy with the gains (literally) in the running game;
(b) love the coverage on kickoffs and punts, instead of cringing as I’ve been doing the past few years – and Prater & Kern have improved too;
(c.) was very happy to see the OL stay solid with some subs Sunday (in the pre-season, I saw a big drop-off there),
(d) am thrilled to see Marshall make some noise. I hope he’s getting up to speed on the playbook now ;), but really hope he’s buying in with his head…
(e) that and Orton’s development will really turn the offensive production ON! I hope and expect some of what we’ve seen with KO is the injury, so as he improves personally, and all the WRs show up, and the playbook expands….very cool things.
(f) am impressed with the D’s performance. Cheers all around for these guys, from Fields & co on the line, to the LBs – and they are improving as a unit – to the DBs. I bought in early to the idea that hoosierteacher put forth about strengthening the secondary as a way to bolster the whole D. The solid ‘backstops’ there free up the LBs to play, and you know Champ’s got to be loving it now that he’s really part of a team!
(g) love to see Doom get a running start;
(h) finally got to applaud the TURNOVERS! It’s so refreshing!
Heh. I think that’s mostly what you said sadaraine, and it’s great fun to watch these guys grow.

Hillis fan's consolation:
Peyton has been quite a piece in our special teams game. His fumble last week was extremely lucky, the guys was just extending his elbows out to cushion his impeding faceplant. I can’t blame him there, i’d have done the same thing. Other than that one blemish he has been a beast on ST. Taking the ball on returns and also laying some hits on the coverage units, plus he has been in the backfield a LOT for lead blocking.
Hillis may not be getting the biggest spotlight right now, but I honestly don’t think he cares. He sat behind Felix Jones and McFadden in Arkansas and didn’t complain. He’s got heart and is willing to do WHATEVER he can do to help this team win. I think he’d still be happy even if he was the waterboy.

That's one of the things I love about him
He doesn’t care in what capacity he is used, as long as it best helps the team, then he is happy. :-)

next 5 games
will be critical to success. Must go at least 2-3, and of course could go 5-0! ;-)
Not all change is good, just as not all movement is forward.
