Discussing the MSM: Some ground rules

There has been a lot said over the past few months regarding the mainstream media and their opinions about our favorite team.  Some people are sick of talking about the MSM, while others continue to be interested in various opinions and critique said opinions based on our own intimate knowledge of the team.  I am not here to discourage discussion of the MSM.  I actually find it quite interesting to compare opinions and realize what Chris Berman often says "We think we know, but we don't know"

However, to better serve the Mile High Report which I dearly love, I decided there should be some ground rules to any critique of the MSM.  Some of them are personal pet peeves, so please, bare with me.  I think of us as a very classy community and I want to stay that way.

1. Let's shy away from personal attacks- Most notably, lets not refer to Bill Williamson as "Pork Chop" Some of us MHR's are a little rotund

2. Utilize the intelligent observation this blog has become known for Instead of saying that Jamie Dukes is an idiot.  Let's delve deeper.  Let's examine exactly where he is analyzing this team wrong.  Let's point out what so many have missed.

3. Give Praise where it is warranted Like praise recently for Bill Simmons, Adam Schefter and TJ (PS, I think TJ is by far the best ESPN analyst.  He has a positive way at looking at things but also can give honest reflective opinion.)

4. Have Fun If the Broncos keep winning we get to have the last laugh.  So lets enjoy getting to prove the MSM wrong, just do it without the personal attacks.

I know for some this post will be offensive because many people have stated before that they don't want to be told how to post on a blog.  However, I just feel that we have a standard at MHR and we should keep it that way.

Take Care!

I sort of have a tough time with some of this

simply because ESPN’s coverage of the AFC west, and the AFC west blog in particular is imho the worst coverage of the NFL of any of the Professional Sports sites. Seriously, these people are getting paid for this !

As a consumer I simply want better.

I honestly cannot remember the last time I read anything written by the esteemed Mr. Williams that I felt smarter or came away learning more about any of the AFC west teams after reading his ‘coverage’

Compound this with his frequent spelling errors, dangling participles, ridiculous overstatements of the obvious (duh!) and just an overwhelmingly lack of professionalism as a journalist, again in my opinion, and you can’t help but wonder if the guy didn’t come by his nickname quite honestly.

Anyways, rec’d your post.

As long as we win who cares. Having a lot of the negativity nancies having to tone down their nonsense solves a tonne of problems. Not many trolls here today, thank god.

But I think it only fair to point out that Schefter called our front seven garbage and Clayton knows less than I do about football and I’m a girl. nyaaah.

Whatever we are Broncos fans. That makes us the cream of the crop anyways.

by Jenna Talia on Sep 28, 2009 3:34 PM MDT reply actions   4 recs

It wasn't Schefter that called the front seven garbage.

It was Stink (aka Mark Schlereth) who should know better, being a former football player.

I love the nickname Pork Chop, I don’t know if I can stop using it. :)

This is our team, let's have fun with it! - dmitchell624

one way to vent is to write to ESPN

i’ve written them repeatedly to get rid of williamson, who is lazy. when the RMN went down and legwold was unemployed, i wrote ESPN to have legwold cover the AFC west. it didn’t help, but i think if more people took the time to write, they might listen. eventually.

In defense of Jamie Dukes is an idiot...

that is deeper than any thought Jamie Dukes has ever had, so I wouldn’t knock that comment too hard. I am also quite fond of Colin Cowterd and I will fight to the death to keep it! :P

I understand the mentality of trying to keep everything “classy”, but I am of the opinion that as long as the R-rated material isn’t used then its not that big of a deal. If you don’t like the slanders like Cowterd or Porkchop, then don’t read that persons stuff.

I’m not going to stop using my inflammatory rhetoric until those morons in the media do. Every week, Cowterd gives another excuse as to why the Broncos suck just four days after telling us why they will lose. He is a moron and I am not going to take the high ground…I leave that for other people. lol

Also keep in mind, hundreds of us are out of state Bronco fans. I live in California so my only Bronco connection is espn radio, raider radio, or national media, or MHR. I love MHR, but I can’t help listen or watch the other stuff because I am also a fan of the NFL as well as the Broncos….MHR is a good place to vent too for us out of towners.

I guess I find "Pork Chop" to be more offensive than "Cowterd"

Mainly just because of the weight issue. It’s a sensitive issue for some people. One thing is for sure, We love our Broncos and curse those who speak ill of the orange and blue.

I never called Pork Chop, Pork Chop...I too found the weight thing a bit dispassionate.

But as long as its not R-Rated, I don’t really have a problem with calling media pukes anything under the sun. lol I am rather fond of mine…

Politeness

In some respects, MHR folks have developed a team concept. It is our team against the MSM. When the MSM is flat out wrong, we point that out. When the MSM is proven to be wrong, we gloat. It may not be polite, but it is what it is. We refer to the faiders, the pissburgh stoolers, the dolts, the bangles, etc. Why not diss the reporters? Now, if anyone disses on a Bronco, then we rightfully take umbrage and these writers shall not escape unscathed when we “strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers.” (thank you Pulp Fiction )

so please, bare with me.

Respectfully, I’ll bear with you but my hot tub is out of order.

Thanks for the post and effort RMT...Rec'd for the fun!

1. “Let’s shy away from personal attacks” – Pork Chop is not in reference to his huge weight problem, it is just noting that his brain works about as well and a cold, thick, lifeless slab of, well, Pork Chop.

2. “Utilize the intelgent observation this blog has become known for” – OK, Jamie Dukes is "1) an utterly stupid or foolish person. 2) Aperson of the lowest order in a formerclassification of mental retardation, having a mental age of less that three years old…(Idiot for short)

3. “Give praise where it is warrented” – I agree with all of the ones you mention and there are more as well…I think that MHR does a pretty good job of praising these people.

4. “Have fun” – That was fun!!!…LOL

Don't sink down to their level.

I think that Thunder’s point is not that we don’t have a right (and a responsibility) to respond to poor journalism, but that we ought to do so with civility.

I say if you read an article that is not well written, is poorly researched, and is not well thought out, give it both barrels. Give their worthless tripe both barrels.

However, as a community, we strive to avoid rudeness and name calling when we interact with one another. We should extend the same courtesy when we critique the work of those on other sites and other media outlets. How we respond to the acts of others says more about us than it does about them.

by DoubleJay on Sep 28, 2009 4:35 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

MHR is also a blog and opinion can be abraisive.

Sometimes, sinking down to their level is exactly what the doctor ordered. I think if people want to take the high road, that is their right and it is also our right to slop down in the muck with the rest of the MSM. As long as its not R-Rated, why force people to change? I like the freedom MHR offers over the ridgid authoritarianism of other websites… ;-)

Spoken like a linebacker Zappa!

It takes understated OL personnel mixed with down right mean DLs and some NASTY linebackers to make a team. I say MHR is a reflection of the team itself and Zappa may be the Doom of MHR!

Ignorance is one thing. Laziness is another. Cowterd and Jamie Doo Doo deserve to be blitzed unmercifully, kinda like those jay birds have been/are doing to the Broncos.

Dukes is

disabled. We should cut him some slack. Having nothing but air inside the cranium is such a sad thing.

Seriously, RochyMountainThunder (love the name), while I did not use a derisive label, but neither did I re-state the arguments about his “analysis” and opinions that have been stated so often it seems a waste of time. Nonetheless, I would not do this to his face, either, out of simple courtesy. So…… is this something that falls beneath the MHR standards as you view them?
IMO, the behavior your are referring to is often (not always) simply short-hand for getting the message across without having to restate it. Your point on personal-attack-nicknames is well taken IMO. We sure don’t like them when applied to…. say …maybe…. McDaniels. That will usually get a rise here.

I have it on good authority

that dukes suffers from excremental cogititis. As such, we must remember a severe mental disability such as this, especially one caused by such a feculent virus, is not entirely his fault. Such disorders are often caused by contagion via the aural system, and it should be noted that it is highly contagious to susceptible populations. Once contracted, a carrier of this sometimes subtle disease spreads the spores of infection through the air, virtually without pause. A truly horrifying sight for those of us that are observationally enhanced is the perpetuitous mandibular agitations of the afflicted.

In light of this disabling disease, let us treat him with all the excremental respect we can muster.

Radio Show

I don’t recall which show, but it was on local “The Fan” after the first game Someone called in complaining that the show hosts were being overly negative. They absolutely ripped into the caller and made him out to be foolish because it was their “job” to be “objective” rather than to be “fans.” They had been in fact relentlessly negative about the Broncos. The caller could have presented his argument better, but the point is that the listening audience has a long enough memory span to remember their previous statements. And their fan base WILL turn on them now and even more if the Broncos continue to win.

I have felt that some MSM writers operating anonymously have come to the site in the last few days and pled for better treatment from MHR. Anyone else feel that?

If that is you, dear MSM writer, I welcome you. We rely on you for many things. All we ask is that you be truly objective and support your opinions with facts. Just like we ask the same of MHR members. If we call you derogatory names, then …. PLEASE …. TAKE IT PERSONALLY! Stop being a jerk and start living up to the highest standards of journalism. You will note from numerous posts and daily Horse Tracks that good articles, whether positive or negative, are regularly recommended IF they are well written and supported. BTW, I know of at least one MSM writer than does regularly visit and I’ve NEVER heard him called a derogatory name.

by Endzone on Sep 28, 2009 4:59 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I would love if the MSM talk simmered way down....

I get tired of hearing about how the MSM is against the Broncos. I feel like I am in a Fox News chat room with all of the MSM complaints. I would avoid the MSM posts but they are ubiquitous. The MSM is very easy to understand. There are those that love the teams they covered when they were beat writers and many that still love the teams they used to play for and all in the MSM simply love to follow what others in the MSM have already said. But hey, they have a lot of teams to cover and still need to have a family or beer drinking life. They can only give shallow and often incorrect opinions. Who cares. We are the down flavor of the day. Heck, we have been unjustly the upflavor for many years when we didn’t deserve it…but none in the MSM would bother to truly analyze what the Mastermind was doing in Denver. He’s the Mastermind, therefore the Broncos deserve high rankings. After we win a few more, they will quit talking about us (with no apologies) and they will have a new whipping boy or 2 (Thanks Redskins). Who cares. The MSM is just that simple. They are not worth the venom that we seem to spew on them….they get paid for shallow and near-sighted observations.

by bonaire on Sep 28, 2009 5:01 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

But I do feel from what I have seen...

that the Broncos are truly a polarizing subject… I mean you either get the sense that the commentator/reporter really likes the Broncos or really hates the Broncos. Maybe it’s just me but Tom Jackson is about the only one out there that seems to be objective and dispassionate and he was a Bronco. But like Jamie Dukes, or Clayton you almost feel like they have something against the Broncos in Dukes case I guess it could have come from his playing days, I know the Broncos owned the Cardinals for years and was he on the Packer team that lost to the Broncos?

I love Tom Jackson's expression.....

On the Blitz whenever they go to commercial. Berman says something outlandish as the camera pans out and TJ has that same stoic expression when they cut to commercial for years now. It makes me smile everytime.

As for Clayton having something against the Broncos, if he does it is new to this year. When Shanahan was the coach, Clayton seemed to always have an inflated opinion of the team. Maybe he hates McD or is really loyal to Shanahan. Honestly, I have never knowingly read Dukes articles, I don’t even know who he writes for. But with the way people talk about him around here, I have no urge to go find him.

by bonaire on Sep 28, 2009 6:53 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's quite possible

That Clayton doesn’t have a source now that shanny is gone and takes the negative edge to try a d pry a positive source out of them.

I believe in the nature of this post that everyone should hold themselves to a higher standard. Not to call names or say anyting you wouldn’t tell the person to their face. That being said Jamie dukes is an idiot and I would love to share that with him personally.

by BroncoInExile on Sep 28, 2009 10:42 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

MSM motivation

The MSM doesn’t care about a particular team as much as they care about a particular paycheck. Money dictates more of what is covered than anything else. The Jets are not as good a team as the Ravens, but I’m tired of hearing about Sanchez curing cancer already. Baltimore doesn’t have the fan base that the Jets do. The NFC east gets so much press because of its history, but it also has four huge markets/fanbases. The AFC west has four historic teams, but all the teams are in smaller markets. Money will dictate press coverage more than the actual talent on the team.

So lets enjoy getting to prove the MSM wrong...

Well that is the part in this post that I can get my teeth into…well, if I still had teeth that is…

I am looking at what has happened to date! Not just how we have started out this season (a little luck the first game, improving in the second, and then even more in the third) but what we put up with during the dreadful summer months!

Have U forgotten how badly our owner was bashed for the "very astute’ decisions that he made, and then, since the MSM had already made up their minds prior to anything happening, WE had to tolerate almost all of them slamming EVERYTHING that the new coaching staff did during the summer!

STUPID is not to strong a word used to describe all of that. Did that word suddenly get expelled from Websters or does it still have meaning?

I made a prediction about what was going to happen this year,,,way back in the summer when all this was happening, and certain people told me that I should post it as a post and so I think I will… it is all about the MSM EATING CROW!

Thanx for the thoughts but, until the msm gets squared away, then U WILL continue to see “like bashing” happening! LOL and keep it commin Zappa

Pretty good post, man, I enjoy these perspectives

Well, it’s the difference between being funny and not being funny. Now we are talking about the philosophy of comedy, which, by itself, isn’t funny to talk about. Imagine a group of comics standing around trying to figure out why their joke is funny or not.

How can one comedian say something and the entire building is laughing, and another person say something a little differently, and people are offended?

I hate to give away trade secrets, but it’s about hyperbole. And it’s not to be taken literally. This is why timing is so important.

Let me give some examples, for those who are neophytes at comedy, or who just don’t know how the hell to laugh.

Let’s say I put up a post tonight that is simply this:

Bill Williamson is a big fat fatty fatso who doesn’t know anything about the Broncos.

Well that’s not so funny, even though it’s hyperbole and perhaps I was trying to be funny.

But now, if I use a little comic philosophy and I incorporate this hyperbole into some twist, and perhaps using the ‘rule of three,’ it can be totally hilarious. For example:

Bill Williamson wrote about the Chargers, he wrote about the Raiders, but then he ate the rest of his blog.

Now we are on to something and folks know it’s not to be taken literally.

Anyway, my point is that funny and offensive are a pretty fine line. If you dare walk it, make sure you have the proper tools, you’ve got clean living in your past….and you wear a cup (rule of three)….

Smokey, my friend, you are entering a world of pain.

Reciprocity..

Nice post RMT and while I applaud the intent of your article (keeping the MHR brand pure and above the norm), I couldn’t disgree more with your proposed ground rules. Just a couple of quick points.1) Most of the anti-MSM hyperbole is well warranted due to the complete lack of professional journalism that is frequently exhibited. 2) MHR is a fan based web site so exactly how do you expect the general population to respond to such blatant negativism? Remember the majority of the members here are well informed, football savy BRONCO fans who have been totally abused not only by the MSM but also by the pessimists who chose to call MCdaniels every possible negative term they could put a Mc in front of BEFORE HE EVEN COACHED HIS FIRST GAME! So please don’t be critical of those fans who choose to respond in kind after the actual games are played…. it’s called reciprocity my friend.

I'm going to say it again

Since clearly nobody pays attention:

STOP TALKING ABOUT THE MEDIA.

The idea that the MSM (God… I hate that phrase so much) is biased against the Broncos is ludicrous. For 30 GD years, the Broncos have been among the most lauded organizations in football. Ask any reporter who worked in Denver during the 80s and 90s about John Elway stories they chose not to pursue, purely for the sake of not getting strung up by his loyal fans.

During the Shanahan years, the team was routinely regarded as one of the best, most well-run organizations in football. Year-after-year, they were included on multiple nationally-televised games regardless of the year’s previous record. There are many teams who go many years without a nationally-televised game. Hell, the Texans had their first-ever MNF game last year.

Yes, the MSM by-and-large predicted doom and gloom for the Broncos. Let’s examine why:

- Vastly new roster
- Vastly new coaching staff
- Vastly new front office
- New QB
- Disgruntled WR
- New offense
- Very little information was dispensed due to McDaniels’ new philosophy (not necessarily a negative thing, but if you as a reporter aren’t granted as much access as you are to other organizations, it’s far more difficult to know what’s going on)
- Mangini, Romeo and Weis have all, to some degree, failed. Nick Saban also had his struggles in Miami.

Now, let’s examine the possible outcomes:

1. The team could struggle, much like most teams in similar circumstances (new coach, new QB, sweeping changes in the front office and among coaches) do.
2. The team could thrive because Josh McDaniels is much, much better at his job than most people.

Those were, realistically, the two options. Which of those options was more likely, would you say? The one that is far, far more common? Or the one that is far, far more rare?

Now, I’m very happy to say that it appears the second option came to fruition. Very, very happy.

But to get so worked up this late in the season about the “MSM” having a ‘grudge’ against the Broncos… That seems silly. I know most of you were believers in McDaniels and I applaud your blind loyalty to the organization.

They played the odds. Most teams in our situation fail. Most coaches fail. Most executives fail. We appear not to be failing.

But to suggest that the reason the “MSM” predicted doom-and-gloom for our beloved Broncos is that they have some sort of personal bias against the team… Well, you’ll have to forgive me if I think that train of thought is a wee bit foolish.

So, do me this one small, tiny, itty bitty favor: focus on the team. It appears to be a good team. It’s certainly an enjoyable one. This could be a very, very fun season. Let’s not get caught up in the petty bullshit that goes along with people blindly attacking media members about how bad they are at their job.

Flagged for language

Plus your shallow assertions and flawed logic. Blind loyalty? Blindly attacking? Your post is as insulting as many of the baseless MSM articles. My take is not that the MSM is biased, even though they clearly are, but that they present uneducated, uninformed, illogical, scandalous rags of opinions which many MHR members find offensive. Just as I find your post hypocritical and arrogant.

Not really sure that the ‘flagging’ was out of good intention or pure frustration that what I was saying might — just might — have had a touch of validity to it. The age-old PeeWee Herman argument (I know you are, but what am I!!!!!).

The problem with your statements is that instead of spending time investigating the two options they just chose one. They chose the easy one instead of looking to see if perhaps they were going to be wrong. They chose the opinion that McDaniels doesn’t know what he is doing based on zero supporting evidence. They chose to anoint a QB as the best ever before he has won anything. They chose to disparage the owner for his memory and decisions. I chose the path less traveled based on my own time and research and that makes all the difference.

A truth can only be expressed and enveloped in words if it is one-sided. Everything that is thought and expressed in words is one-sided, only half the truth; it all lacks totality, completeness, unity.

Sorry, but if you suck at your job you’re going to get called out.

And they got lazy and sucked at their job. So we call ’em out.

Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?

Rich Eisen is sexy.

I won’t deny it. I can actually watch NFL Gameday Final on Sunday’s because I just tune out everyone’s voice but his. He cracks me up, good clean humor and never targets his puns at any particular team or player, he gets everyone equally. I like Rich, he seems like a good guy.

The MSM doesn't hate the Broncos

The MSM will follow the story of the minute (see Michael Vick) to the point of absurdity. They don’t love or hate Denver any more than any other team, but the Jay Cutler story was far and away the “juciest” of the offseason. They ARE bandwagoners. Once the conventional wisdom is introduced in the media, all of the lemmings will parrot the same sentiments over and over again.

So the idea that Denver was making a mistake with the Jay Cutler trade (which still remains to be seen, imho) became popular, and it was the biggest story of the offseason. Therefore, many Denver fans feel that the team was unfairly persecuted by the media.

The media loves to overly glorify winners and mercilessly slam losers. But the bottom line is all of this is noise. What happens on the field is all that matters. “Respect” in the media is utterly useless, ultimately fleeting, and has exactly nothing to do with what happens on gameday.

Anyone else notice

how quiet the MSM has been about the Broncos since our third win?

I have a newsreader that pulls headlines from a couple of different MSM sports sites, and Monday morning & this morning, they pulled in a headline about 15 of the games. The Denver-Oakland game is the only one that had absolutely nothing show up.

Go figure.

but...

I love pork chops….

Not all change is good, just as not all movement is forward.

and this
I spent some time excoriating Clayton last week, but since that’s like stealing a candy bar from a developmentally challenged baby chinchilla, I have no interest in continuing with that tack this week.

was brilliant!

Yes, it was

but he didn’t actually use a derogative nickname. I laughed for quite a while over that one.

Maybe we should just agree to give up the nicknames, except Cowterd and a few others we just can’t live without. Or maybe a grandfather clause… we can use the ones we got, but will refrain from inventing others? (TIC) ie, tongue in cheek.
