Comcast to Sponsor MileHighReport for Remainder of 2009 Season

Some pretty exciting news for us here at MileHighReport! The good folks at Comcast have decided to sponsor this here blog for the rest of the regular season. They've come to MHR and many of the other NFL blogs on the network to help them get the word out about their new Red Zone Channel. They obviously know that the best way to get to the best and most hardcore football fans in America is to go through the SBNation family of websites, and this site is no exception. The fact that companies like this are coming to MHR and to SBNation in general speaks volumes about how much the site and the community have grown over the course of the past couple of years, not to mention the power you, the members of sites like this, yield.
The concept behind the NFL Red Zone channel is pretty amazing stuff. Whenever a team gets inside the 20-yard line, the channel will switch to that game, which will allow you to see basically every touchdown from every game. If you don't want to shell out the money for the dish and pay for the NFL package, the Red Zone Channel was made for folks like you, particularly if you're outside of Denver's primary market as many of us are.
The best part? The good folks at Comcast are going to be offering the Red Zone Channel for FREE this weekend from 11:00AM to 2:15 PM Mountain time for the early games. The Broncos play at 2:15PM mt, so this would give the perfect opportunity to check out what the Red Zone Channel has to offer and decide if you want to pay the measly few extra dollars a month it would take to permanently add it to your package.
To find what channel the Red Zone Channel is on your Comcast cable system, go here and type in your address and it will tell you straight away.
Here are some of the other things that Comcast has going on in terms of their sports lineup:
- Recently moved all of the major sports networks to their most popular tier of service giving it to millions more people at no additional charge, and launched ESPNU. Also offering ESPN360 to their internet customers for free.- Comcast also has the new NFL Redzone on its Sports Entertainment Package (about $5-7) this channel is getting a ton of buzz, and fans love it. This weekend Comcast will offer the NFL Redzone for free to all of its 17 million digital customers. The ³free-view² will be available this Sunday, October 4 from 1 PM to 4:15 PM EST (11AM to 2:15 PM MT).- This weekend, NFL RedZone joins Comcast¹s current offering of live sports programming, as well as NFL Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, ESPNU, MLB Network, ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, TBS, Golf Channel, Speed and Versus among others on its Digital Preferred package, and will also be available to its Digital Starter customers. Comcast¹s SEP, the usual home for NFL¹s RedZone, also includes the major professional sports networks, as well as CBS College Sports, Fox College Sports, Fox Soccer, Gol TV, the Tennis Channel and other networks.
Now, I don't intend on turning into a complete shill for Comcast or anything. . .actually, this will be the only post that I intend to do that will be devoted wholly and solely to Comcast. . .I simply wanted to welcome them as a sponsor for the site and let you folks know that they'll be sponsoring the occasional post here at MileHighReport.

and a big compliment to the site! It’s good to see this site recognized. Great job Guru, staff and community!

If you don't have the Sports/entertainment package w/ comcast
you don’t like sports

It’s bad enough we are subjected to commercials, and then they take away “Free” TV and make us pay for stuff we don’t even want. It’s all about Money and I think it’s a bunch of (expletive). Comcast doesn’t do squat for the Bronco videos on their site. Who is enjoying the fruits here. This is SB Nation revenue and more spam to filter through as far as I’m concerned. Another interruption to our viewing pleasure, that’s what I see. A brilliant marketing ploy though.
BTW, I am an avid sports fan that can’t get cable because the cable company is too lazy to run it down my road, and I refuse to pay for a Dish that I cannot control the content I want to watch. I don’t feel that I should pay for those worthless channels and hate surfing through them. Not to bash you. It just struck a nerve, so don’t take it personal.

i totally agree….i wonder how much money is actually being put into the hands of SBnation and how much for Guru, if any? (not that he doesn’t deserve it) just curious, though i’m sure he’d never tell.
i hate commercials and i love that there were none on MHR, guess not anymore.
anyone read broncotalk.net?

sponsoring a post ? hmmmmmm
well i guess its only fair…with success comes advertising.
you guys deserve it (ad revenue) more than the guys from ESPN in the big red clown shoes anyways.
looking forward to the shilling for Preparation H, as the Broncos are going to be a pain in the rear end for the pundits and the league all season long !
I'm a Comcast customer &
I watch it this last weekend. Pretty cool, actually. I’m not a fantasy football guy, but it would be real handy for them to have. The Broncos play many games in the late afternoon timeslot and that means you will get extra coverage if they are in a tight game.

Great news
This is very cool, guys, congrats. I’ll have to check that red zone thing out.
(Er, btw, not to nitpick, but typo in this post’s header — should be sponsor with two "o"s, not “e”, but you knew that! Sorry, the editor in me coming out…)
Anyway, great news. Finally Comcast does something good. ;-)

Thanks Comcast!
I’ll check it out this weekend (hopefully it lets me DVR the channel…otherwise count me out). :)

The best thing about the red zone channel is no commercials
I have been listening to the sound on it on my laptop, and playing the early games in mute on the two TVs I use. It’s much better than listening to horrible football commercials.

Great news to see sponsors are noticing
I am not in the area for comcast, however that is really good for those who do. No commercials and every TD…..sweet.

I am always uneasy doing posts like this because I don;t want to think my opinion can be ‘bought’. Thanks for the support!

you mentioned getting a sponsor on MHR Radio last night
Does this mean you’ll only be talking for 45 minutes instead of the full 60? :-)

The announcer
Is absolutely hilarious. RZ is offered as a free package on the NFL Game Pass overseas and I watch it at half or during the commercials during the bronx games. And at half when he does the wrap of all the other games he’s SOOO much better than all the clowns at the networks you can tell he’s a true enthusiast.

Love Capitalism. It feels like freedom, opportunity, liberty, and hard work.
I watched it a bit this last Sunday, of course this week, they’ll miss all of the Broncos TDs from outside the red zone and by their Defense! LOL
Not all change is good, just as not all movement is forward.

Darn...I just signed up for DirectTV...too bad Comcast doesn't offer to buy people out of their long term contracts. lol
I suppose I’ll wait until next year to switch to Comcastic!
Sacramento is one of the few markets over here they are dominate in. I know San Diego has Cox cable…too bad for you southern cali clowns. :P

Yes, but Red Zone is still a compromise
I’ve listened to KOA online along with the Red Zone channel this year, then used Rewind later to catch the whole game. I was thinking Rewind would fill the bill (and get me away from the TV on Sunday), but I miss the live action. So, there I am on Sunday anyway… RZ’s OK, but there’s no sub for the whole enchilada.
It's a compromise I can afford, though.
“Free” with my Sports Pack works for me. I’m quite pleased with my Triple Play subscription, and it’s nice they’re giving back to something (MHR) that I love as well.
What does it all mean?
When you say they are sponsoring the site, what does that mean? Are you being paid? Is the staff being paid? Are they paying for the website fees?
I can tell you that none of us are getting paid.
We’re still doing the work for the love of the team, the site, and the members. You guys make the effort worth while.

Congrats!
I like watching the Red Zone channel. Great for Fantasy Madness.
Would be funny if they offered this during basketball season … everytime a team is about to score the channel changes … I wonder how many seizures this would cause? Over/Under is set at 2,500.

We just signed up for 2 years of DirecTV so I can watch Bronco games from sunny north Florida, so we won’t be taking advantage of RZ. Soon we’ll be complaining about MHR being the “MSM” :) HA!

Superb Guru
Good sponsorship is always a plus…….and just so everyone knows, it isn’t Comcast that is offering up the free viewing this weekend it’s the NFL Network. I am a Dish subscriber and am getting the same offer…….
Comcast
I REALLY, REALLY wish Comcast would buy out the stupid local Wichita cable co. ‘Cox’ ….. C’mon please?

Good job!
This is a great site. The MHR staff and contributors have worked hard for years to grow the site, glad to see that it’s getting recognition!
Red Zone
I watched it last week during the early games, it’s a pretty cool channel if there isn’t a game you really care about being carried on your local stations.
Of course, once the Bronco game started, that was it for Red Zone channel for the day ;)
Here's to hoping this site doesn't get overrun by shameless advertising.

Less adverts?
Hey, John, I noticed that the Sprint background image is gone. Is Comcast the reason? If so, great! For some reason, that image slowed my browser.
Richard Seymour is a girl.
if anyone if concerned about advertising (ie. hates it and is probably a communist)
i highly recommend Firefox (as your internet browser/webbrowser) but especially with the Adblock Plus addon. i would estimate i see about 1% of the spam/popups everyone else hates because I have this installed.
once you’ve seen an ad once its very simple to right click on the offending spam errrr i mean brilliant marketing tool and simply block it.
that Comcast ad is nice enough, good product presumably, and good on MHR for getting enough site hits that a big cable company is interested enough to spend some money or throw a discount or something to the people who make this quality website happen.
but since Comcast isn’t available here in Canada, that advertising is inapplicable to me as a consumer, and so i had to block it. victory is mine !
sometimes the smallest victories are the greatest victories ! go Broncos !
Hating commercials/ads makes you a communist?

This is a NFL Network product...
…so now MHR is acting as pitchman for Jamie Dukes, Solomon Wilcots and Crew.
I understand the business side and congratulate you on your well earned success, but a boycott is a boycott and I vowed I wouldn’t do a thing to support NFL Network.
Its been fun.
by PredominantlyOrange on Sep 30, 2009 3:50 PM MDT reply actions
It's Comcast, not NFLN
Comcast happens to be running a free weekend for an NFLN product, but they aren’t the NFLN. No need for you to leave MHR!
Two Minds
My first impulse in any sponsorship is to be concerned. I love MHR, and the last thing I (or anyone else) wants is to see MHR sell opinions for money.
Of course, we have the vows from Guru and HT that they are NOT selling their opinions for money…and I have absolutely no reason to not believe them.
But the second point. Guru mentioned that Comcast has approached MHR and other SBNations sites as sponsors, and I’m completely okay with this. Look around the site: there’s quite a bit of advertising going on. As much as we’d like to think SBNation exists only on the good will of it’s members, they need some form of revenue to make it all work. Servers, bandwidth, support, development…they all cost money. If a couple (obviously sponsor-related) articles show up, and it will help keep SBNation (and by extension, MHR) going, no problems here.
And with that said, I dumped cable AND both dishes 1.5 years ago, and have no intention of going back…so Comcast, send in the money! :o)

My question is what does sponsorship mean in a practical sense?
I mean this sounds like something good, but what is it exactly?

And here in Denmark I don’t have either, and then you get all those great channels for seemingly no money… I envy you all!
