I guess because they think Brandstater can hold the fort

if neither Orton nor Simms is ready to go on opening day.

His play

forced them to add him to the active roster. He would not clear waivers and they don’t want to loose him. Ideally they would have released Tom and signed him to the practice squad. I feel that McD may make still make a play for Kevin O’Conell at some point. Just a thought.

by NJ Broncos on Sep 4, 2009 5:47 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think...

McDaniels was hoping it wouldn’t come to having to play Tom as much as he did because he knew how talented the kid was and he wanted to sneak him onto the PS.

by Matt In Canada on Sep 4, 2009 7:07 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol, yeah, that stellar completion percentage is tempting for other teams to waste a roster spot on. Brandstater isn’t the QB of the future. Surely you realize this.

by ELGee on Sep 5, 2009 10:06 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

His stellar completion percentage

is the result of two brief sorties and one extended stint in preseason. His rapid improvement might well have made him a target. He isn’t the quarterback of the present, and some enthusiasts have claimed, but it’s premature to rule him out as our quarterback of the future.

swift

He looked so slow. He doesn’t impress me. I agree with Robinson

Askew was completely lackadaisical last night. It’s like he switched brains with Moss. Didn’t even pretend to want to be playing in that game.

Mine

No on Askew and Robinson. A maybe on Swift. It will all depend on the other cuts around the league and who we can sign to the PS.

why?

Stokely is likely a Bronco for the rest of his career. He really doesn’t hold much value becase he is not a No.1. As for Scheffler he may have some value but I haven’t read anywhere that a teams is looking for a pass catching Tight End.

by NJ Broncos on Sep 4, 2009 5:55 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Stokley isn’t even a legit WR3 on most teams, and he’s a fan favorite for an obvious reason. He’s not going anywhere.

by ELGee on Sep 4, 2009 6:31 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK, so we have to release them and let them clear waivers before we can put them on the PS? Is that how it works?

Because I want Robinson, Askew, and Swift on there as well…

by aLuffabo on Sep 4, 2009 4:09 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes

and yes they have to clear waivers. Not a sure thing Brandstater would clear waivers, f’rinstance so they are more likely to keep him on roster. But some of these other guys should sneak through.

We don't have

good depth at TE, we are in perfect situation with 1 great blocking TE, one great receiving TE, and one rookie. There’s no need to trade Scheffler at this point, his value to the team far exceeds what they’d get back.

Stokely is a very useful guy to have around, especially without knowing what will happen with the other Brandon.

For sure...

The TE’s are already set. I’d be surprised if they are thinned any more than this….

Stokely is too money to let go… What’d we get for him? A 5th rounder? Hardly worth it.

still around 13 or 14 to get to the 53 man roster. I really would have liked Robison to make it through, but, maybe practice squad and some more experience.

Most of us had him on rosters until recently

I say until recently because I concluded he was gone last night, when I was pondering a write-up on this subject.

Powell had produced exactly zero statistics in the pre-season, from what I’ve seen, so that tells you how likely his chances were.

I’ll go on a small limb here and say that Moss and Crowder will not be cut. Why? Just look at their production from last night’s game.

We still have another half of the 24 (includes Marshall, who didn’t) final cutdown coming. It would still be interesting to see what people think the final roster will look like. MAKE YOUR PREDICTIONS, EVERYONE!!!!

POWELL

He just didn’t fit our scheme. He’s not as effective at the weight he was carrying, and when he was at his college weight he didn’t fit that 5 technique that a 3-4 needs. I hope we sign him to our PS. He was a run stuffer at VT. I feel he may have a shot at the 5 technique. He just needs to work on his speed and loose some weight.

Those two (Casey and Ben) are the two oldest and most likely to miss time on the line. I’m guessing that they’re confident that Hochstein can back up if both have to miss a game.

Steelers are a very good bet for upgrades

They have one of the most stable rosters in football. Each year they draft players in the 3rd -5th rounds that can’t catch on because their squad is already so deep – nice problem to have, eh?

If another team picks up a player on waivers, does that team who claims the player have to place the player on the 53 man roster?

I think...

That if you claim them off of waivers, you have to sign them to the active roster. PS is sort of like free agency, isn’t it, where anyone can sign anyone they want?

by BroncosBassist on Sep 4, 2009 9:03 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

not for these cuts

there isn’t even a practice squad to sign them too, so how it works is the Broncos (all teams) get to resign 8 guys once they cut down to 53—I’m sure there are specific dates and times involved. They are then allowed to designate those eight guys as the scout team.

And you are right, a PS player is still technically a free agent, but it is a unique variety subject to PS rules.

The waiver period just means...

That the lowest ranked team gets first dibs to put a player on there Practice squad.

Basically, if the Steelers released a RB, hoping he’d pass waivers, the broncos put in a waiver for said RB, and the Lions put in a waiver, he’d goto the lions practive squad.

Remarks to comments, cuts

Carlton Powell really did not show much. Matthias Askew is 30 and young guys in front of him.
Once a 7th was given for Russ Hochstein, who also can play center, and Seth Olson being a stud on the OL, meant Kory’s number was up. Main rap on him is that he has very short arms.
IMO they are not holding vets for backups but more to the possiblity of a trade.
Two guys that I hope pass waviers are Lee Robinson and Nate Swift. They are great for the PS.

Swift won't

I'm guessing he will, not to be contrary

Swift is playing a position that is very well populated, and with receivers who run faster. All the spread offenses in college now means that there are lots of WRs.

He stands a good chance — as good as any we cut — of coming back on the PS, but it will depend on who is out there. Xanders, et al, have been very active at bringing in people, so there’s still a very good chance we’ll see new faces. They may land on our PS, since everyone who’s cut is a possible PS member, but there may be non-PS eligible players who make our 53 — even now.

Excellent point that this is an extremely busy time of year for Xanders. McD has neither the experience nor the time to evaluate players cut from other teams.

McDaniels lets Xanders & personnel know what he needs

It’s not as if McDaniels wouldn’t have opinions on personnel he has personally game planned against or observed but it’s ridiculous to think that he’s got the time to track everyone else’s players right now.

I tried to get this point across recently. We’ve got some very good people who track players on other teams, and it’s an all day job. The only way the “McDaniels is doing everything” line works is because most people don’t know this.

EL

by the time the dust settles (sometime this season) Marcus will be starting.

Based on his potential paired with our lack of depth it’d be kind of a joke if he wasn’t, but he’ll dog it. Peterson is a cog on one end and LeKevin Smith & PDX will man the other if McBean doesn’t pan out.

Really no surprises

When Lichtensteiger botched that snap last night, I knew he was gone. I was sitting in section 523, and I could see the look on McDaniels’ face from there.

Nate Swift may not have been cut, but watching him field punts, which is the only place he would have any real value IMO, I knew he was gone as well. That was painful to watch.

Eddie is still going to be the main Punt Returner next year, with Zo taking some too. I doubt that counted against Swift’s evaluation. He was ahead of Jackson on the depth chart last week, so it’s kind of a surprise to see him go. Jackson has looked pretty terrible, but as the cliche goes.. ‘he knows the system’. I bet Swift gets PS’d.

Swift

Swift is the only guy cut today that I can see making the PS

Carlton...

…is an exemplary gentleman, as proven by his cordial correspondence with all his fans on Twitter. I’m not going to question the team’s opinion on his playing chops, but since he’s just a plan great guy I hope he catches on somewhere else.

He made huge strides this offseason coming back from his torn achilles, though his best shot to make the team was at NT and that wasn’t going to coincide with his build. He’s not a hog. He’s almost built like a linebacker.

plain* great guy is obviously what I meant. I really wish SBNation would leave the list of forms that don’t have an edit option. Though is it even really a list when they’re the only one one it? :P

lol, forums, not forms. I give up.

never give up!

even with all of our 100% trying, we all still ONLY know half the battle! somewhere, somehow that’ll make sense.

Take my advice, I'm not using it !!!

About McChesney...

Is he actually hurt or is it just a phantom injury to keep him on the team without taking up a roster spot? He’s a prototypical New England-style OL. BIg, ugly, dirty and mean. Me rikey.

Someone said they're working on an injury settlement

That would indicate that they are planning to cut him lose once that’s done.

Yeah, just read that. Too bad.

None of them will be on PS

My guess is that those whom the Broncos want to be on the PS will be announced tomorrow, much closer to the deadline. I don’t think they would want the PS candidates to be out there for the picking by other teams so early in the process.

it could be the opposite ...

What if we cut them early hoping teams are still concentrating on who they want on their own team? What I mean is, maybe we cut them early in hope that teams haven’t made their final decisions on their own players yet and they aren’t willing to rush their process in order to sign our players?

Just a thought.

Since QB Ingle Martin has been cut, I assume they are going after another one?

To all you Jordan detractors...

…how do you explain the fact that he didn’t even get a chance to earn his job in the 4th game? That’s because it was already earned. He was on the sideline with a headset on.. he’s a de facto OC out there. He knows the system backwards and forwards.

Walker needed to do something spectacular to make it worth keeping 5 RBs. Maybe the Broncos still do, but there’s no way in Oakland he makes the team in LaMont’s stead.

According to the CS Gazette, Josh Bell was waived as well…
