Immediate Reaction and Notes
- There is one too-many because Brandon Marshall is still on the Reserved-Suspended list. One more move will have to be made when he is activated, but this allows the Broncos to get the lay of the Free agent landscape.
- On offense, I had predicted that Darius Walker would make it over LaMont Jordan. I was wrong. There are reasons why, more than Jordan's New England past, why this could have happened. Pass protection is one of them. In the end, however, Jordan is the 4th RB behind KnowMo, Buckhalter and Hillis. I can live with it even though I don't agree with it.
- I had though the Broncos would go with 6 WR's, IF Jabar Gaffney's thumb was progressing well. The fact the Broncos went with 7 doesn't necessarily mean it is not, but that the coaches value depth at WR more than RB or some other areas.
- The addition of Vonnie Holliday mean alot momre than just what the guy can do on the football field. It is another veteran voice in the locker room, a coach on the field. He has alot of experience in all defenses and will help the young guys learn the nuances of the 3-4
- Don't get too comfortable with this roster. I fully expect it to change between now and mid-week after the team has the chance to scoru the waiver-wire.

Me too.
Especially from what I have seen from our defense this year. I don’t know how it will play out in the season, however it is nice to see some kind of progress on the defense.
On offense I really like WRs McKinley and Lloyd. McKinley needs to learn to get a better grab on some of those passes though.
Can’t wait for the Bengals.

say we lose a corner and a safety in one game, down to 6 d-backs including only three corners, a lot of tired guys.

I would guess the last four on your list

On the bubble for Marshall reactivation/other player pickups
The first cut for Marshall reactivation will come from O side of the ball, due to numbers game. I predict the following players may be on the bubble their, In the following order of priority (my personal speculation)
1) LeKevin Smith to PUP or IR
2) Lloyd or Chad Jackson. 7WR may be one too many. I wouldn’t guess who of the two.
3) Brandon Gorin – we might go with 8 OL, not 9 and he seems to be #9
Defense moves will be dictated by pickups. Whichever position we pick up, same position we cut.

Pick ups
I don’t see Denver claiming anybody off the waiver wire. So at this time any additions would come via trade and if Marshall isn’t traded, I don’t see one coming. as the season goes injuries will determine the changes on the team.

Chris Baker!
Congratulations big fella! What a ride! I think the team has picked up a gem and I hope you keep your head screwed on straight. Wonderful, great opportunity for you!

Totally!
That is awesome, he deserved it but still you never know with an NRI/free agent player if they’ll be given a legit shot. Great signing.

Baker is the first one in
On goal line defense where he and fields both man the middle of the line. I see him getting a lot of reps rotating with Fields.

The team
The team has good combination of youth and experience at every position. With the pickup of Hilliday the weakness of the team is LOLB. IMO

I’m still liking our combo of Haggan and Ayers at LOLB. I think by midseason Ayers will be starting and excelling at LOLB (LDE in the 5-2).
by aLuffabo on Sep 5, 2009 8:35 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
i actually think
Lilb is more of a weakness.
Haggan actually hasnt played bad, plus Ayers has improved every game, Reid and Moss may be able to make some solid contributions as well.\
However, while im no where close to being sold on Davis, i like Woodyard and Larsen
Dawkins/Hillis Bad @ss' for life

Agreed
I wonder what the actual depth chart ends up looking like. I think I saw Moss playing LOLB against Arizona, but he looks the part of ROLB. If Ayers moves to the left, it’ll probably be:
Doom/Moss
Haggan/Ayers/Reid
But Ayers might be backup at both ends… ? Eh, I give up trying to figure it all out. :)
By the way, congratulations, Jarvis. I think you might have played yourself into a job on Thursday. Now, go build on it and make them have to put you on the field.

comment on retention
We kept 9 of 10 2009 drafteees. We also have Baker, not to mention a number of UFAs that we picked up late last year and in the last few years.
We’ve lost a few of 2008’s draftees — 3 (Torain, Powell & Lichtensteiger), but we had kept 8 of 9 originally (9 of 9 w/ Barrett) and 3 UDFAs (Woodyard, Kern & Polumbus), so our retention from 2008 is still good. 2007 is down to 3 out of 4, but that’s not too bad. And we still have 4 of the 7 draftees from 2006, and the Cutler trade has resulted in several more picks and players.
My point — we’ve added a LOT of new talent in the past few years. It could be argued that 2007’s draft hasn’t had a big impact (other than Harris) but FAs such as Graham, Stokley, Peterson and Prater were signed then. There’s more players, since we added a lot lately: (2008); McBean and Haggan, and others such as Wiegmann, etc, but I won’t try list every last one.
Listing all the FAs were brought in who were still wanted would give the full impression. My point is simply that we’ve undergone an enormous transformation over the last few years.

I'm trying real hard
not to speculate on who goes and who stays. I never get it right anyway. I know the coaches will put the best available players on the field.
I’m trying to be optimistic I think we can win the division at 9-7

First of all, Thank You MHR (and Guru) for the Roster update, and discussion
Is Colquitt eligible for PS?
I don’t know how many teams are punter hunting, but it’d be nice to keep him on the PS just in case…
If Prater got hurt, as in, out for the season, and since Britton can kick, would we be able then, to pull Colquitt from the PS to play?
First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and we oughtta let someone else have a fair shot : )

Yes Colquitt is eligible PJ
And add my thanks along with all the rest Guru.

I'd be a little surprised if
Colquitt makes it to the PS. Someone needs a punter, and no one wants to trade for one or spend draft picks. :)
by BroncosBassist on Sep 5, 2009 9:06 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's also very rare
for a punter to take up space on the PS, even one as good as Colquitt seems to be. He’ll be snapped up before too long, I’m sure.
The commenter formerly known as "Dashiell".
by underdog on Sep 5, 2009 9:13 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
No need to put him on PS
What use is a punter on PS? He’s just taking up a valuable spot and there is only 8 of those. It’s not like coaches will do much to develop him or use him for scout team. He can be signed by any team that needs a punter and PS offers no protection against it. If he is not employed, we can sign him off the street in a pinch – just like if he was on our PS.

wth...
I’ve no idea why Jordan is on this team still. He has been garbage all preseason and training camp, is making 2 million dollars a year, and has been hurt the better part of the past 4 years. Combine that with the fact that Hillis has already shown and proven himself to be a good short yardage back makes me wonder what sort of dirt he has on mcdaniels.

Comfortability I presume, for the coach.
Knows the system, yadda yadda yadda. Though I though he wsa serverly outplayed by Walker throughout the preseason. Shows what I know!
Take my advice, I'm not using it !!!

27 of the 54
active players are holdovers from Shanahan era, according to Denver Post’s Lindsay Jones. Which means only 50%. Is that true? Wow.
12 of 25 def; 13 of 26 off; 2 of 3 ST.
Talk about changeover. And probably a good thing given the mediocrity of the last couple of years (and worse than mediocre on defense).
The commenter formerly known as "Dashiell".
by underdog on Sep 5, 2009 11:58 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
On the defense 8 of the 25 were here last year.
2 DL; 6 LB; 2 DB
On Offense 13 of the 26 were here last year: 1 RB; 2 TE; 4 WR ( I am counting Chad Jackson); 6 OL.
All the new faces is part of the reason that the team played the best in it’s final preseason game.
Thanks for your time and input today, Guru.

I think I screwed up: I forgot Jack Williams DB and don't know about Ryan McBean on DL
So at least 9 on Defense out of 25 were here last year. My bad.

So, who makes way for B-Marsh?
John knows I had Gorin being released, and I still think thats a possibility. We could get away with 6 Defensive Lineman too, so Le Kevin Smith might be moved to the PUP. I can’t see us getting rid of any of the WR’s, so for me its one of the two options I mentioned.

NFL.com is showing that Marcus Thoomas (DE) has been cut. The 53-Man roster on DB.com shows Marcus Thomas but no Vonnie Holiday. Is Thomas out and Holiday in or are they both in?

There was some confusion over the name, but folks tried to say he was cut on Friday. It never happened.

Here's a thought
Now I may be mistaken, and anybody correct me if they know exactly how this works, but I think they could put Gaffney on the PUP list and then activate Marshall. I believe that would give Gaffney until the 6th week of the season to completely heal and get used to catching the ball again before the team has to make a decision on any permanent roster moves.
I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid.
Major League Baseball is nothing more than a waste of time until football season starts.

I looked into it
and discovered that Gaffney is not eligible for the PUP list because he started training camp on the active roster. Let the spec;ulation continue, I think Gorin is most likely to go, Is it me, or is it weird to comment on your own comment?

Doesn't make Sense
We have a great backfield. PHillis shold be our 2-back IMO. 7 recievers? Why when we have a bad QB? Lets not kid ourselves… Orton is below par on all levels. I would say, less throwing for Mr Orton and more handing off to Moreno and friends.
