thoughts on the Pre-Season "3 and out Baby"
The preseason is over and I have to admit I am impressed with what I have seen. I am not saying it will be a great year, but we are moving in the right direction. Nice Job by Josh and the coaches pulling this all off. Here are a couple of thoughts after looking at the preseason stats
Offense
- Turnovers Ranked #29 with -5. Thank goodness for that last game. It could have been worse. At least the defense will be allowed to be aggressive in this area
- Time of Possesion Ranked #3 at 32.40. This is a nice surprise for me and this will help our defense improve greatly as they are not on the field all the time.
- Offense penalty Yard Ranked #29 @ 164 yards. Nice job except that bears game was brutal. We could have been ranked 32! This shows Josh's detail this year in training camp. Thank You
- 3rd down percentage ranked 24th at 36%. No worries yet. We were evaluating talent not padding stats.
- Points per game Ranked 24th with 16.2. We must improve this number over laster year in order to have any success this year
- Yards per game Ranked 19th @ 308.
Defense
- Points per Game Ranked 13th @ 17.8. Great to see this with all the change!
- Yards per Game Ranked 7th. Way to go D!
- 3rd down percentage Ranked 5th @ 35%. My slogan for 2009 is "3 and Out Baby!"

Great slogan Scott
I was very impressed with our defensive showing, especially when you consider much of it was without Bailey and all of it without Dawkins.
3 and Out Baby!!

Gonsoulin, Taylor, Little, Wright, Gradishar, Atwater, Davis, and Sharpe...
Why are they not in the Hall...I just don't understand.
Honestly
I think I saw more three and outs over the past two games than I saw all of last year. This is a welcome change and I hope that it continues through the regular season.

From the last
few years I thought three and out meant the other team was setting up for their extra point.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.
LOL

An added perspective
Take away the first game, and our turnovers are -2, big leap forward from the previous year.
Also, INTs by Orton decreased every game (3, 1, 0). Bodes well for 2009.

Ask the Lions if going 4-0 in preseason is a predermination of how your season is going to go.
They were 0-16 on the season. McDaniels used this as an extended Training Camp trying plays that some players had never done in their career. The team should start to click on all cylinders around game 6 or 7. Their vast improvement from game one to game 4 was impressive. 3 and out Baby…Oh yeah and 13-3 Baby!!!
Agreed
It’s intriguing to me how many places I’ve read people saying that they’ll be happy if they just see improvement – which we saw from game-to-game in the preseason, but now people are starting to predict a ceiling of 4-5 wins. Kinda odd.
I’m of the firm opinion that we are going to surprise a fair number of folk this year, based on the game-to-game improvements we saw in the preseason.

Love the slogan...
and I am hoping that this is the start of Orange Crush II

Love those stats
The three and outs are great and affect field position, but I’m also encouraged by how many times we stopped teams before they got into scoring position. Last year we turned opponents’ offenses into Duracell bunnies. They just kept on going. Average points per drive would indicate how good we were at preventing opponents from going all the way down the field. If I’m not misreading between the lines your penalty ranking is misleading. You seem to be saying we did good by ranking #29 and if not for Chicago might have ranked an even better #32, but those numbers would normally mean we were awful. If you mean there were only three teams with fewer penalty yards it would make more sense to say we ranked #4.
