Moss surprisingly makes Broncos roster - Frank Schwab(Gazette.com)
The biggest surprise among Saturday’s final cuts by the Denver Broncos might have been one of the players that survived.

Crowder goes, Moss stays for Broncos - Lindsay Jones(DP)
Two years ago, the Broncos used their top two draft picks on Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder, with the hope the defensive ends would energize the team's pass rush.

Broncos roster takes shape - Mike Klis(DP)
Veteran coach, rookie coach. Apparently, it doesn't matter. After the Broncos temporarily set their 53-man roster Saturday, they once again wound up with players at every position.

Roster Limit Reached; Holliday Signed - Chris Gentilviso(DB.com)
Saturday's regular-season roster deadline brought several shuffles by the Broncos to reduce the team to 53 players.

NFL: Broncos in a fix as season looms - Jeff Legwold(Salt Lake Trib)
Now on the doorstep to his first regular season as the Broncos head coach, McDaniels still has decisions to make. It's just a whole different set of problems on offense right now.

Broncos release final 12, add Holliday to get to 53(SeattlePI.com)
Defensive linemen Tim Crowder and Nic Clemons were among the players listed on the Denver Broncos' final list of cuts, while veteran end Vonnie Holliday was added to the roster as the team established its 53-man roster.

Yesterday’s Bronco cut downs were the least controversial I can remember in years, maybe decades. I’m not exactly crestfallen over anyone that got axed. Somehow I think we’ll manage to still field an NFL football team without Walker, the invisible Crowder and Clemons. When we release Gorin or Chad Jackson today, that won’t cut me too deep either.

Really glad to see Barrett make the team after the offseason work he put in. Moss earned it with a monster game vs Arizona.

As for the practice squad: I’m hoping we bring back Peds, Lee Robinson, Tony Carter, and DJ Johnson. I vot no Swift. I like Swift, but Denver needs to sign a deep threat to the PS and Swift aint that guy. Maybe we can sign Rhett Bomar to the PS. Also a speed back and Center.

Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.

Hoping for Robinson and Pedescleaux, in particular

Meanwhile, what I liked about Moss Thursday was that he looked comfortable rushing from the end position opposite Elvis.

If he can keep that up, he could be a force in passing downs — and part of a terrific pressure tandem.

by JeffG on Sep 6, 2009 8:18 AM MDT up reply actions

I should add

that one reason I was high on Moss heading into OTAs is the length of his arms, which I reckoned could make up for being a half step slow in coverage (which I assumed many of the converted DEs would be, at least initially).

So I was happy to see him get his hands on a pass Thursday evening, as well.

He still needs lots of work — he sometimes tends to slow down after his initial moves are stuffed — but here’s hoping the extended play time gives him plenty of film to look at, and that he makes the necessary adjustments in order to begin a climb up the depth chart.

by JeffG on Sep 6, 2009 8:23 AM MDT up reply actions

Yeah Moss has that quick first step

But he seems somewhat flummoxed after his first move is defeated/countered. Hopefully he can learn to link 2 or 3 moves together and just get better- I have hopes that the new coaching staff can do this.

I was encouraged by his game on Thursday, but not so pleased with the way he whiffed on at least 2 sacks- sorta seemed to run past them…. like to see him finish those plays.

Kizla did have this little gem in his mailbag.

“McDaniels is inaccurately portrayed as a little dictator because that caricature fits the broad strokes of his critics. Does McD have much to learn? Sure. But tell you what: The new Broncos coach doesn’t have nearly as much ego as the man who previously held the job in Denver.”

Mail bag

I rarely read Kizla’s articles as my perception is he too often tries to be a mini Cossell, meaning reaching for controversy in order to sell news papers and get personal attention. However, his mail bag is far more balanced and unbiased so that is a regular read for me. The man can be a great writer when he gets off the negative kick and focuses on the underlying stories: like the borderline brilliant team construction plan of McDaniels that only gets attention at MHR.

Thanks Guru

None of the moves really shocked me, which is a good thing. Jordan knows the system thats why I think he made the team. Im sure the coach is going thru all the other cuts yesterday to see if anyone out there could help us

Even Brady’s contract is a bit below what “elite” QBs are making…so he might be considered inexpensive.

Wish my version of “inexpensive” was at that level…

So Seymour

is a Free Agent after this season?? So one year of Seymour in exchange for a future 1st round draft pick. Wow.

Now, in defense of acquiring him, he’s still a good player and he’s only 29 going on 30. And they have been terrible in the preseason on the DL. But still, one year of him for a future 1st rounder seems a steep price to pay, considering they likely won’t be able to resign him.

by underdog on Sep 6, 2009 11:01 AM MDT up reply actions

If I didn’t hate the Patriots, I’d love to be a fan of that team. What a great trade for NE. Trading an aging, injury prone star at the tail end of his prime for what will likely be a very high 1st round pick? Sheesh.

I’m glad I hate the Faiders and their fans because this one would be tough to swallow as an Oakland fan.

I’m vocally against the Alphonso Smith trade, but at least Smith is an inexpensive young talent with untapped potential.

I know Seymore has three Super Bowl rings, but his best games (for the most part) are in the rear view mirror. 2011 is a long time away, but that day will roll around. And on that day, me thinks the Raiders will be kicking themselves (hard to the groin) for this trade.

Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.

by McGeorge on Sep 6, 2009 9:26 AM MDT up reply actions

Shouldn’t the NFL be watching this stuff? I mean really…this isn’t even fair. After the Randy Moss trade, shouldn’t oakland stay FAR away from any NE offer?

If I’m reading this right, the Patriots picked up Derrick Burgess and a 2011 1st round pick for Richard Seymour and a 4th round pick, which later became a 5th round pick.

Like taking candy from an undead baby…

Kicks to the groin shall heretofore be described as

High velocity applications of pressure to the lower extremities – or – “another masterful personnel move by Oakland”. Same difference no matter how you look at it.

I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

We're on the same page on this one.

What a horrible move for the oakland! You would think that the Madden AI is making the offseason moves for Al Davis. You could build the future of the team with a very high pick, or take a player that isn’t going to be around for long, and isn’t elite anyomore. Astonishingly foolish!

The Patriots hit a home run on this one. Perhaps we can get a 2012 1st rounder for one of our second stringers?
