Wow

It’s been a good day for Haggan huh? I guess he’s been doing something impressive on the practice field.

Haggan

Wow, this guy has to be doing something right. Plus Woodyard.

Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

Great news

A few things stand out. Orton has the support of the team. Mario Haggan is a very good 3-4 OLB who was drafted by a 4-3 team who moved him around and didn’t match his strengths. It’s pretty common, but it explains a lot. I like the guy. And, good for Woodyard, who is being looked on as a young rising leader. Congratulations to each of them

Bear, thanks for that point

…Haggan is having a pretty good day. I hope we found ourselves a guy who fits the system as good as you say. His preseason seems to indicate as much….along with his extension.

Smokey, my friend, you are entering a world of pain.

A guy who rises that fast

must be team star in the making. Exciting!

Could be some hidden

leadership there with Haggan. Just might be what the D needs.

It only gets better for those who work hard huh?

Good for Haggan. He’s living right!

Yup

Team votes for their captains.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Great group of captains.

I love that BDawk, Champ and Haggan are running the gig on the defense. Orton a captain? Who said the team wouldn’t embrace him?!

I love this group.

In case you were wondering...

1. Orton is going to be your QB..
2. Haggan is having a good day…
3. WW is fast

Two Surprises

One was that Haggan was named a Team Captain and Two that DJ Williams was not.

Me too EZ

He's probably more vocal

DJ is a quite type guy…more lead by example for sure.

Not too surprised

with DJ. I don’t think he’s the take charge kind of guy, from what I’ve seen. He performs on the field, but it’s not his personality to teach or drive others, it seems.

agree

I’m surprised Haggan was chosen over Andra Davis also, who’s suppose to provide veteran leadership. Looks like Haggan has developed quite a bit under the radar.

very good point

I didn’t think about this ‘til you mentioned it, but I’m surprised too. But it must be a good sign about Haggan.

I'm suprised Elvis was not named as well...

He is an extremely hard worker with a great motor. No quit in that guy.

That being said I like our captains. Some interesting veteran players. Mario is definitely having a hell of a week.

I wonder if DJ will still be making the D calls.

by DBronx777 on Sep 9, 2009 1:14 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw DJ in during the Nickel packages. I’ve got to believe he’ll have the green dot.

So cool. As someone on twitter just pointed out, he went from undrafted rookie to team captain in just one year+. Amazing.

Two Types of Leaders

If you break down the Captains as either emotive or intellectual:

DEFENSE
CB Champ Bailey – intellectual
S Brian Dawkins – emotive
ILB Mario Haggan – (I don’t know! )

OFFENSE
QB Kyle Orton – intellectual
C Casey Wiegmann – emotive
TE Daniel Graham – intellectual

SPECIAL TEAMS
ILB Wesley Woodyard – Again I don’t know, but I’m guessing emotive.

BTW Congrats also to Woodyard!

by Endzone on Sep 9, 2009 12:18 PM MDT reply actions   1 recs

Not sure of your point, but I sure hope not!

I just think on the spectrum of intellectual leadership to emotional leadership, WW is on the emotive end. That is outside of his excellent play on the field, which one would hope all team captains would exhibit.

Definitely good day for Haggan

As people have noted…

It took James Harrison several years to develop into the player he is today. Hopefully, Haggan in on that path too.

Awesome analogy. I think you could be on to something. I had forgotten about Harrison. I hope you are right.

Agreed

Good point Banzai B. But I think being named captain doesn’t necessarily mean his teammates thinks he’s one of the best players on the team, just a good leader (not to diminish that title at all). I still think Haggan is second-string this year, but much credit to him for earning his teammates’ respect. That’s huge.

All that said, I REALLY hope you’re right!

Haggan

Interesting choice. I figured it would be D.J. Williams

by alacy9513 on Sep 9, 2009 12:58 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Great for Haggan, but what about D.J.?

I really hope D.J. is okay with not being named captain. Something like this might hurt a player mentally if he considered himself the leader of the linebacker corps.

Off topic but

ESPN football columnists 2009 predictions, as linked by Adam Schefter.

It’s fine that no one picks Denver to do anything, not surprising and who cares. But only 1 out of 16 of them think Knowshon can/will win offensive rookie of the year? I understand a lot of them picking Sanchez, since he’ll be starting (tho rookie QBs often struggle) but LeSean over Knowshon? Cool. More motivational fodder for the Know!

The commenter formerly known as "Dashiell".

by underdog on Sep 9, 2009 1:26 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

maybe expectations would be higher for Know

if he’d gotten his butt to camp with the rest of the players instead of holding out so long. He’s a special talent, so I don’t expect that will hold him back for long, but early on (first few games) it could have an impact as he adjusts to the NFL game.

Good point

Probably slowed his progress a little and a fair reason to not pick him for that. Still… LeSean?

Moreno's holdout

I don’t blame Moreno nor Ayers for the what happened. Contract numbers are arrived at through a comparison to other players’ contracts and there were numerous problems with the contracts in that range. In fact, Crabtree is still unsigned. Moreno’s numbers indicated that he wasn’t pressing the issue on salary. It’s far more likely that his agent was unwilling to settle for a lower number when there was a likely prospect of a higher number. And I can’t blame the agent for that, since it’s his job to get a reasonable salary, but circumstances prevented an early agreement. And many of the players in that range were still unsigned after Moreno signed, so “lateness” is relative here.

by Colinski on Sep 9, 2009 2:29 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

totally agree

But the holdout may explain why others have lowered their expectations, at least initially.

I, for one, expect the man to come alive when he gets his first carry!

by broncosmontana on Sep 9, 2009 6:17 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

In every criticism I read of KnowMo's chances

the holdout and the missed practice and games are mentioned. ITs as good of a reason as any, but it won’t hold up to the scrutiny of almost a hundred hours of predraft scouting and interviews, and it certainly won’t stand the test of time through this season.

A great honor from Teammates but what else?

I have heard of captaincy for years but what, if any, are the official functions of a Captian during a game? I see they all get a C on their jersey and TV facetime at coin flips but what do they do? Is it just ceremonial?

Must one always be on the field?
Are they the single point of contact that deals with the REF for opposing team penalty decisions?
Are they the only ones, beside the coach, that can officially request a time-out?
Are these customs and traditions or actual rules for game conduct?
Thanks in advance for the info…

Team Captains' Responsibilities

Good link here.www.bills.clubs.nfl.com/team/team-captains.html

"Team captains are a key element in building team leadership and enhancing communication between players, coaches and management," said Ray Anderson, the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations. "A perfect example of the benefit of this kind of communication is that the players themselves suggested the concept of reemphasizing the team captains."

A great group of leaders.

The surprise obviously being Haggan. We don’t know what goes on in the locker room, but this is a telling story to us as fans. Leadership comes in many guises and this group looks pretty formidible to me. Congrats to them all on a team with plenty of choices to be captains.

..If I didn’t just drop $75 on a Royal jersey, I might have been game. Of course, once could buy a Cutler jersey for $5, and spend $40 turning it into a Haggan Jersey!

Good one!

Though at $75, I think they’ll all have to wait. Still, Haggan would be behind (in no particular order) Royal, Champ, or Hillis. Actually, maybe Dawkins, since I live around Philly now. Heh, that might be worth it just for the reactions up here.

They rewarded Haggan with an extension

I hope this shows the rest of the team that you can get an extension by showing up early, leaving late, being a role model to your teammates, and working hard outside of the facility.

DJ may flourish without Captaincy

I think being a captain may have hurt DJ a bit – he’s not a vocal leader and it did show last year, especially with very little other leadership (John Lynch) to help him out on the field. The extra responsibility is often a burden unless you can handle it…we all know DJ isn’t the Al Wilson field general type. He’s always been more of an instinctive player and it would’ve been pretty tough on him (especially in last year’s non scheme) not having guys to help him out on pre-snap reads etc which may have affected his game overall.

A similar thing sometimes happens in cricket where captains have lower batting averages after taking the captaincy of a team; since batting requires a lot of mental stamina (as a note the longest innings ever recorded by a single batsmen is 970 minutes), the added stress of being a captain – which requires a huge amount of thought, tactical nous etc. – can be a distraction. I wouldn’t be surprised if DJ suffered from that.
