There’s a number of factors that go into that, but there’s a lot of players that will play with things that are probably more difficult to play with than what he has.
Our word for the week has been accountability. We’re looking to put the 45 guys on the field on Sun that want to play together. We talked about it as a squad on Wednesday that that’s what’s going to happen this week, and anyone that showed any indifference to that, we’ll play without them, and we’ll play well anyway.
Teams win late in the year," McDaniels said. "If you have players that aren’t going to put that ahead of everything else, then that can certainly be detrimental to your club.
We’re all accountable to give our very best effort to Pat Bowlen, to this organization, to this city, to the people that support us, to each other – that’s what this is about.

Happy New Year!
Looks like the Drama resolution has been broken already.
Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks
soooooooo?
He thinks Marshall doesn’t want to win….therefore he’s sitting out? Isn’t it McDaniels who deactivated him? Isn’t it McDaniels who deactivated Scheffler? Isn’t it McDaniels who refuses to play Peyton Hillis with any significance?
I think he should come out and say this is a Shannahan thing and get it over with.
Dude, look at all the vets on this team who are playing well that were on the team when Shanahan was here. McDaniels obviously doesn’t care what regime the players came from, he cares if they are ready and willing and capable of contributing on Sundays. Saying McDaniels is petty enough to put players in the doghouse and kick them off the team because they were holdovers from another coach is just plain silly.
Do you think he’s an 8 year old picking a dodgeball team out there, or what?

Yes I think that's what he's saying when he says "indifference"
But whether there’s a specific Shanahan link, that’s anyone’s speculative guess.

Respect
I got lots of respect for coaches decision. Marshall has always been hit and miss with his attitude, and I’ve noticed Scheff’s attitude problem lately too. I know everybody wants a coach who will bend over and cater to the star players, but we got a real football coach here who will make the hard calls to help the team as a whole.

The Patriot Way?
I see there are two camps in all of this.
1. Those who think McDaniels is being petty and perhaps picking on players who are not his. These folks wish Shanahan was still here or that McDaniels would be fired (go read the Denver Post forums).
2. Those who like the fact McDaniels is holding players accountable.
I put myself in the second camp. I think a lot of this comes from how McDaniels saw Belichek handle stuff in New England.
And all I have to say about that is, the Pats won three super bowls, nearly a fourth and pulled off an 18-1 season in this decade.
Shanahan won a single playoff game and threw away dollar upon dollar on wasted draft picks and free agent busts.
I’ll take my chances with the Patriot Way (hopefully soon to be the Bronco Way).

that's a specious choice
There could be personality differences. Remember….Mr. Belichick flamed out in Cleveland doing these same things. It takes a long time to learn nuance if you wanna be a tough guy coach. Maybe McD hasn’t learned that nuance yet?
or maybe he has and maybe the players left from Shanahan just don't understand it.
After all, guys like Marshall and Cutler were completely coddled in Shanahan’s system. How would you respond to a change like that?

why are we throwing a player
under the bus….at the end of the year….when he has performed all year….because of an injury dispute? I don’t get it. As far as I can tell there hasn’t been an issue with Marshall since training camp.
There’s no other reason to deactivate Marshall publicly (which they haven’t done all year by the way) was to embarrass him. So that’s “reigning in attitude”? PLEASE!
put it this way...
You and I both play football for a living. Say you hurt your leg but it’s not that serious. The medical staff says you’ll be good to go by Sunday so you play—-albeit injured.
I also play football for a living, and I have the same thing happen to me. I hurt my leg but it’s not that serious. The staff says I’ll be good by game day but I say I’m not playing because I’m injured. Regardless of the importance of the game, I’m hurt and I’m not playing.
Just because he’s technically “injured” doesn’t mean he’s actually hurt. It means he’s riding the technicality of it and using it to his advantage. BMarsh knows he’s healthy enough to play but he’s not going to play. He’s going to use the previous mis-diagnoses against the team. That’s his only leverage and he’s riding it like a teeter totter.
So long Brandon Marshall. I thought you had changed, but apparently I was wrong. I hope Denver keeps you this next year just so you make bottom dollar. A piece of crap like yourself deserves nothing.

It seems like they were trying to embarrass
Why wouldnt McD just wait until game time; and just say BMarsh tested his hammy but it didnt respond.
Going to the media and saying stuff about a player like questioning his tuffness is strange; because the player can’t really retaliate without making the situation much worse.
It's all planned out...
McDingus has a plan, just like he did with Cutler, to develop a “schism” that will lead to a trade. That way he can get rid of a player he doesn’t like (therefore won’t have to pay out a big contract), and can get as much trade value as possible. All without looking like the scheming control freak that he actually is…
I didn't even read past "McDingus"
it’s apparent that you’ve made your mind up that HEAD COACH JOSH MCDANIELS will never make you happy. He could find a way to draw Elway back out of retirement and you’d still be pissed at him.

which, of course
he would, as Elway was certainly a “diva.”
difference:
Elway actually won games. You can call Elway a lot of things, but a loser is not one of them. What’s funny to me is the fact that Elway never won the big one when he was selfish. It was the year that he offered to take less money so a guy like Neil Smith could come in.
After he quit being such a selfish player, he won the super bowl. What does that tell you about me first v. character first? Even John Elway knows you can’t win it all when you’re focused on yourself only.

How is BMarsh going to even be on the squad next season after this? I might like conspiracies more than the averge guy; but you have to wonder why he would blast him publicly. This so far is the only explanation that makes sense.

…Is McD actually TRYING to antagonize, alienate, and insult his players? Sure seems like it. You would think that by now he would be over all this petty, egotistic, “holier than thou” attitude. You would think he would want to win. Guess not… Boy, I sure hope he teaches those silly, childish, selfish players a lesson!
…you’ve got to be kidding…
We've been down this road and it went nowhere
Shanahan coddled and overlooked the bad attitudes. He got away from having high character/team first guys. It was guys like Elway/Rod Smith/Eddie Mac/Shannon Sharpe/TD/Al Wilson that won us the super bowls. Then in the last decade I think Shanny got a little impatient to repeat his success and brought in some bad eggs like Dale Carter, Darryl Gardner, Clarett, Javon Walker, etc…
Where did that go? Nowhere.
Sure its a little disconcerting to have the drama with Marshall. He is so good, its too bad he’s such a douchebag. Imagine if he had Rod Smith’s or BDawk’s attitude, he’d be amazing. Instead, he’s a diva, like Cutler.

Before too long he’ll have run off any and all of our Pro Bowl players. They are all divas, don’t ya know…they can’t POSSIBLY be team players!
Nope
The only players who have had issues are the small subset with attitudes. Culter, Sheffler, Marshall.
Even before McD was here, who among us did not recognize that Cutler had some attitude issues? Those were incongruous with McD’s vision for the team.
I dont see any problems with Dumerville. I dont see any problems with BDawk. I dont see any problem with Gaffney, CBuck, etc…
No divas allowed. Why should Marshall get to do whatever he wants because he’s good. You can’t play favorites, everyone needs to be held to the same high standard.
If you cant hack it, then there are consequences.

Attitude?
Ok, so what exactly was Cutler’s “problem” before McDingus got here? Marshall had well documented off-the-field issues, but what exactly was HIS “problem?” Sheffler had a “problem?” I don’t think so. They were ALL successful, team players.
So when Elvis develops an “attitude problem” when the Broncos refuse to pay him a suitable salary, he should get the heave-ho too, right? Diva…
Oh yeah,
Stokely is obviously a diva as well…that fit that got him ejected just might get him cut/traded from McD-EogoManiac’s team…
what was cutlers "problem"?

Yes, boy, that McD fellow really wants to lose
That’s why he brought in Brian Dawkins, Mike Nolan, Mike McCoy, Don Martindale, Wayne Nunnely, Andra David, Andre’ Goodman and a whole host of other players. That’s why he moved Doom and Reid to OLB so that Room could lead the league in sacks, made Andra Davis an excellent Mo LB, brought in Ron Fields (and was generally panned for it until it worked quite well) and has put in the 100+ hour weeks all this past year. It’s why he works constantly and has had excellent success for a 1st year – or would you be equally unhappy with Bill Walsh, Chuck Noll and Bill Belichick, all of who had far worse records in their 1st season before winning SB trophies?
I don’t really care of someone likes McD or doesn’t but this nonsense about personally insulting him and talking about how he doesn’t want to win is so absurd that the folks who spout it should be embarrassed. Getting rid of Cutler’s attitude got him the same insults – gosh, he looks like a fool about that, doesn’t he? Holier than thou? You mean that he actually has the gall to make the team follow the head coach? Horrors!
I do try to listen with an open mind to everyone, Merlin, but what is particularly irritating in your comment is the repeated personal insults. So, he’s, ‘petty, egoistic, holier than thou…’ Do you actually know him? Have you met him for more than 5 minutes? Know anything about him? If not, how about keeping it to football? The worst we can do after all the huge upheavals and changes of personnel and scheme is an 8-8 season and the best is 9-7. So, the 1st year out, McD will either break even or have a winning season. Is that some kind of reason to insult the man?
Given Marshall’s tendencies to childish behavior, Scheffler’s pouting behavior earlier this year and Cutler’s infantile antics, I hope that McD does teach the players a lesson that they do need to learn. It’s called "How to Win’. Some of them aren’t listening, and they won’t be missed. Players like Dawkins, Peterson, Fields, Buckhalter and Champ Bailey already support McD – very openly.

I have to give my respect to McDaniels somewhat
Obviously BM didn’t grow this attitude last night, so what exactly changed, is it a case where McD thinks we can win without BM and Scheff so he wants to prove a point or is it that he finally decided to stand up to BM attitude.
Once again, I think it proves BM will not be a Bronco after this season and I think that it will be for the best. I think his attitude is a detriment to the team, and I think we can get some good WR in the draft or through FA.

"H.I., you're young and you got your health, what you want with a job?" - Evelle from Raising Arizona
"It happens sometimes. People just explode. Natural causes." - Agent Rogersz from Repoman
Here's what I gathered.
“Well, accountability and injury is different, you know?” Marshall said. “I pulled, well, I wouldn’t say I pulled my hamstring, it’s definitely not that bad, but it’s tough.”
Marshall said an MRI showed no structural damage, “but when you try to explode and take off, if you don’t have it, you don’t have it.”
So, it sounds to me like he is half-heartedly complaining about his injury. I don’t know what to make of this since I am not in McD’s head. However, from those two quotes, it sounds to me like Marshall didn’t want to play, but he doesn’t want to come out and say it. This is just a bad situation and the MSM is going to blow this thing up until we have a McMarshallgate situation in a few weeks.

Just a note on MRIs
I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m a retired doc – OMD who was a primary care provider as well as a teacher – and Ponderosa is a currently working MD who has said about the same about MRIs. The MRI is one of the best tests that we have at this time. However – it’s not foolproof by a long way. I’m not sure if Marshall is playing games or not – no one but him seems to be – but he’s got a point in that the MRI does not show anything, but the test is far from infallible. Two last year didn’t show problems, but the problems were there, even so, and were found by a specialist later. I have to give Marshall the benefit of the doubt on this one, for lack of other evidence.
Moreno/Buckhalter in '09
Thanks Doc.
You mentioned the MRIs that Marshall had taken last year that didn’t show any problems. That certainly has relevance to this conversation. Maybe Marshall still doesn’t fully trust the Broncos medical staff since they missed his hip injury last season and that doubt is contributing to his caution with this injury.
I don’t think that Brandon would feign an injury because he doesn’t want to play the final game of the season. He is a competitor. Even though he wasn’t entirely satisfied with his paycheck earlier in the season, he still came to play. He just loves to play football.
I’m with you on this one, Doc. I’m going to give Brandon the benefit of the doubt on his injury, too. Plus, he loves the game too much to feign an injury in order to stay on the sidelines.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
Girl, you don't need to be a 10, as long as you have a good smile and smell like bacon.
That's a good point too.
With all the focus on concussions, it should be up to the players to know their own bodies and decide if they are up to playing or not. Unfortunately, some will use a phantom injury as leverage. I just hope that is not what Marshall is doing.

McDaniels has a lot to learn
The team overachieved for the first 6 weeks and underachieved for the last 9…. Everyone’s responsible for that, including all players and all coaches, including (of course) McDaniels.
Would the team even have a chance at the playoffs without Marshall (or Scheffler)?…
Maybe they’re both bad eggs and need to be gone. We’re not out there playing or practicing with these guys. Maybe Marshall wouldn’t have played anyway — because of the injury (however bad it is); maybe, as the doc says above, Marshall doesn’t trust the broncos medical staff….
Some posters here are praising McDaniels for taking the long-term look, and maybe that’s right. Personally, I also think that’s right (at least in McDaniels’ mind), but that he’s also taking a very short-term look: he thinks he can beat the Chiefs without these two guys…. If it were a better quality opponent, I wonder what he would have done…(?)….
HOWEVER, there’s also what I’ll call a medium-term look, and that comes into play if McDaniels is right about the team being able to beat the Chiefs without those guys AND if other things happen for the Broncos to qualify for the playoffs….
Maybe he thinks everyone will be able to get back onto the same page if the stars align and Denver’s playing either in Foxboro or Cincy the 9th or 10th….
And this is where I think McDaniels is himself being immature and has allowed himself to get into a pubescent power struggle with not just the me-centered Marshall, but also Scheffler, a guy who has little or no documented problems with anyone other than this one guy (McDaniels).
If Denver gets in, there’s no way they win on the road in the playoffs without those guys. They may not have anyway, but without them, they very well wouldn’t even be competitive.
Show Marshall the door, fine. Don’t know about Scheffler…. But I do know McDaniels himself needs to grow up a bit…. After all, he’s the head coach who got into it with Chargers’ linebacker Shaun Phillips before getting completely crushed by SD at HOME.
He has handled this the way a college coach would suspend a player or two or more, when there are 100 guys on the team. Maybe he thinks Marshall is like a teenager. Fine. [Scheffler too?… (I don’t know….)]
But he NEVER should be making comments to the media about it: keep it in-house and make the decision(s) before the game, and discuss it with the media appropriately afterwards…. If the team doesn’t make the play-offs, and he knows those guys are gone for next year, then in the post-game, trash ‘em both all you want. “Coach,” but not before: regardless of whether or not you consider that THEY’VE acted professionally, now you haven’t either.
And YOU owe it to the owner, the other players, the Team, the City, and the Fans to do so.

could be a motivation technique. i think McD believes his team can and will win, and his team can and will be in the playoffs. and that is perfect. the coach has to believe, has to assert that belief. and maybe he is trying to motivate marshall and scheff (and all other 53 guys) in a different way.
we dont know what has been going on in that locker room all season. it could be that there has been in-house handling up until this point, and McD is now trying something new. results i guess are the only thing that will prove any of it, so we will wait and see.
it will be interesting to see what kind of fire this team has on sunday. could be interesting…

He picked the wrong game to apply this technique. Its the LAST game of the season and is potentially make or break the playoffs. This is where McD made the mistake IMO.

We will disagree on this point
I am aware that this tactic has “worked” on Marshall before. It does not seem to have a lasting impression. I think creating a media zoo only helps our competition. I hope for the best in this situation. I just feel this should have been handled internally. Mention has been made of the Cutler situation and how his agent used the media against the Broncos so I may be the one wrong here, my feelings are that too much is made of public opinion in the business of (privatly owned) football. I don’t like the “much ado” media and ….. anyway.

What would the response in BroncoNation be if it weren’t the Chefs but the Chargers we had to face to make it into the playoffs? And would McD have still benched both players?
discuss amongst ourselves :)
Dear Rockies-Thank you for a wonderful rollercoaster season! Best turnaround in MLB history to become NL Wild Card Champs.
Garrett Atkins-So Long, Farewell, Auf weidersehen, Goodbye!! You were a great Rockie! GOOD LUCK!
Troy Tulowitzki-MLB's BEST shortstop..nuff said
Yorvit Torrealba- Re-sign!! he's en Fuego!!
Brad Hawpe- I hope I get to see you in a Rockies uniform again!
Dexter Fowler - prowling CF, WC in his talons, leaping Utleys in a single bound!

Just my answer, but I think the reaction would be the same. Well I hope it would be. I see a purpose here at work. A philosophy bigger than a game. I don’t think it matters if this were KC or SD as it’s still a very BIG game. Lose and we’re totally out of the playoffs help or no help.
I'm glad we had this talk.

I'm not sure. SD is a vastly superior team
and the Chiefs are awful. I can’t help but wonder if McD didn’t factor the level of competition before making the decision…

if he's trying to build a culture the opponent doesn't matter
Those who are going to contribute to a winning team play, those who are indifferent won’t. Kinda black & white. Your’e either pulling with us to win or you’re pulling us down. Indifference to either puts you in the second camp.
I'm glad we had this talk.
