Well, now, it's not quite the off season yet, but looks like things are already off to a

Let’s roll with the guys who want to be around.
Don’t count Eddie out, my friends. He is still a good receiver

Actually I think the wrting-on-the-wall for Sheff was there when shanny left.
McD has never been involved with a scheme where the TE (with limited blocking skills) was a main receiver, Shanny had several years to figure out to use Shannon Sharpe.

Josh coaches a short passing game
but in reality it’s main theme is old school smash mouth football on offense and defense. How to use him might not be it as much as there is no way to use him most of the time in this scheme. I like Tony but Broncosense is right, Tony has been on watch since the Cutler fiasco.

Why do some people
have such strong emotional ties to players who have won NOTHING as Broncos? Yes, the 2006 Draft Class is/was loaded with talent. How many times have they reached the playoffs? How many playoff games have they won?
Maybe it’s not just about talent. We can talk all we want about how great that 2006 Class was, but talent only brings you so far in the NFL (or any other sport, for that matter). The only guy from that group I want to see return at this point is Elvis Dumervil.

… or does that go against common sense?
It's not an "emotional" tie
McDaniels has a three year contract to get the team where he wants it to be. There is going to be turnover and those guys getting phased out are not happy about it. Are we supposed to get a new head coach every time a popular player is unhappy with the current head coach and his direction? I’m willing to support this head coach until the end of that three year rebuilding period and then take a look back at what he has accomplished or failed to accomplish. I don’t have emotional ties to any particular player or the coach. I do have an emotional tie to the team I’ve followed for decades and want to see them succeed. Having a revolving door with the HC position isn’t going to accomplish that goal.

re: tough (rhetorical) question on why we lionize them
It’s a big subject and way too big for me, but it seems clear that players are symbolic of what we’d ‘like to see’ and attitudes towards them become resistant to refutation because of the irrational way we attach our hopes to them.
I realize you weren’t asking a real question, Douglas, but it’s such an interesting subject.
A digression — I’ve often wondered about the escapist mentality that existed during the depression (as seen in Busby Berkely musicals) and in the late 19th century U.S. People cling to certain dreamlike beliefs at these times even though it might seem logical to abandon faith in certain enterprises. Late 19th workers suffered horrific conditions but continued in their belief that hard work would pay off. Their faith (not religious, but that’s all you can call it) became strengthened despite evidence that they were engaging in a failed enterprise.
Certain dynamics lend themselves to these kinds of irrational attachments. The stretch from late 2005 to late 2008 for the Broncos was conducive to a ‘I want to believe’ mentality, which isn’t really surprising if you look at how long the “only one more player” will take us to the SB belief persisted. Our hopes were vested in the 2006 draft class (and 2008’s, too) and anyone who questioned their value was the “killer of the dream” (Hugh Dalziel Duncan). What’s odd about attitudes during these instances is that people become more enamored of the dream when evidence accumulates that it’s a failed enterprise rather than less.

re: the Kool-aid
The Kool-aid was clearly being drunken before McDaniels arrived, and that’s what confuses people. McDaniels and the 09 draft class were subject to a far different standard than Shanahan and his drafts, and the criticism of those who are more supportive of the team as Kool-aid drinkers in exactly backward. We’re in the post-Koolaid era and neither McDaniels nor the current draft class has been given the exemptions that Shanny and the 2006 & 08 draft classes enjoyed.
It’s hard not to notice that the 08 draft was treated very differently than the 09 crop was. For example, the signing of Law was interpreted as a knock against Smith instead of against Williams, the player who was cut.
Reactionary opposition to McDaniels and the 09 class are new developments. Few people would have dared to criticize back then in the way that they do now. Defamatory comments against McDaniels are now made routinely without any pretense of having evidence to support these claims.
I’ve treated this general subject lately under the umbrella term of motivated cognitions, and I also talk about the area of cognitive heuristics and biases. Current attitudes are partly negativism that’s enabled by the Internet and partly a change brought on by the firing of Shanny & Cutlergate.
There’s an Orwellian flavor to much of the criticism since the charge of bias is used prophylactically by posters who, in most cases, are uniformly against anything that McDaniels does. I’m reminded of the hedgehog bias (from Tetlock) or the All-roads-lead-to-Rome argument. The conclusion is that McDaniels is some kind of nefarious character and every single piece of evidence somehow leads to this and only this conclusion.
no goats, no glory.
Colinski, I find fascinating that sports' fans tend to mythologize both the past and potential
with respect to players and teams. I wouldn’t know the official term for these biases, but I would guess they would be like an impact bias or historical/confirmation bias
By this I mean, we tend to magnify previous accomplishments in ways that perhaps are not realistic. For example, John Elway’s career takes on mammoth proportions now that he’s been retired for awhile. You would swear the guy never threw an interception and that Dan Reeves was the stupidest coach who ever came to Denver.
At the same time, we tend to project all of our hopes into players with “potential.” This is specifically true with respect to the “gunslinger” QB or the guy who has all the “physical tools.”
With respect to this latest situation, we have both working at the same time. The previous biases won’t allow for a fair assessment of the current context, and the the impact bias that we project into these draft picks (which are party influenced by our previous biases for Shanny) does not allow us to fairly assess the current draft class.
Of course we are all human, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less interesting. The NFL marketing people know this, and therefore, market the hell out of the draft. And our impact biases lead us to believe that Mr. Cutler Mr. Think-Like-A-Champion were really only one free agent away.
"But I hate the way our identity has changed..Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth." --Brian Urlacher
comment on mythological pasts
Good pick up. The past is hardly the fixed event that people imagine it to be.
I have to be careful here not to get into a political discussion here, but mythologizing the past is common amongst people who criticize their political opponents for not adopting a sober view towards current and future events. Romanticizing the past is quite common for one political persuasion while the other could be accused of romanticizing the future.
The most obvious example of romanticizing the past is the “Old West.” What does it say about our psychology when post-Civil war guerrillas are lionized, such as members of Quantrill’s raiders? And the lynchings and continued resistance in the south and genocide against American Indians in the west hardly seem like events that mark an era we’d romanticize. It would be easy to understand if there was a desire to erase guilt over the events of that era but the fascination with that period began immediately upon its conclusion and repeatedly depicted that time in glowing terms.
Oddly, most cowboys were black and many were hispanic, but that fact is almost never portrayed in the narrative of those times.
no goats, no glory.
Colinski, I could read your stuff all day, man. Please post more of it.
Given that we took about half of Mexico in the Mexican-American war, which now includes Nevada, NM, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, California, some of Wyoming, etc. I would tend to believe your last statement.
"But I hate the way our identity has changed..Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth." --Brian Urlacher
most cowboys were black?
man, I want to see an old west movie that takes that into account. are there any?
people romantasize the past
Awww, life was never sweeter (begin old story) awww those were the days. But people gloss over the negatives that may have happened during those good ol days because most of the feared events or fearful emotions of those current times never came to be realized.
Dan Reeves wasted offensive opportunities. Shannahan wiped all those memories away. When you think of Elway, do you think of him hoisting the trophy or lying on his back from another sack?
I would love to hear Colinski write about the psychology of fans and analysis. When I turned on NFL network to see the Marsh reaction, low and behold all the player “analysis” skewed towards the player perspective. It would also be interesting to see people’s bias in regards to their job position. I.E. employees tend to be critical of bosses (epsecially when their real life one sucks) where as business owners tend to be sensitive to outrage against an owner or coach. Just a thought.
I'm glad we had this talk.

That is true (for me anyway)
I’ve been a Kool-Aid drinker since Day 1 of my fandom. That’s just how I roll. I am not being unrealistic, just optimistic. I generally see the writing on the wall and keep an open view on where we will end up each season. Simply meaning, “13-3 and Super Bowl bound” is the rallying cry, but 8-10 wins was the expectation this year. Otherwise, it would be delusional and deeply disappointing, especially the last 3 years.
Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks
Wow, great take
Very interesting.
Can we have a bit of perspective here?
20 weeks ago, Dever was definitely not a Super Bowl team, and at best, a fringe playoff team. We can quote Denny Green and say ‘they are who we thought they were’, but most of us would have been pleased as punch with an 8-8 or 9-7 season especially if we’d been told that Denver would be in the playoff hunt all year.
Denver has a slim (okay, VERY slim, svelt, flaco, skinny) chance at the playoffs this year. Let’s see what the players who the coach percieves to really WANT to be in Denver can do in a (mostly) meaningless game agains a decidely inferior opponent.
I, for one, am dying to see Brandon Lloyd show us the Ringling Bros. catches he showed in past years. Who knows, maybe the Sports Guy’s Ewing theory will manifest it’s self in Cutler & Marshall’s exits. Maybe Eddie Royal and Richard Quinn become stars, who knows. But we have to see what these guys have going forward. I’d bet that guys like Dawkins and Champ are SO not surprised at Marshall & Scheff’s benching.
Keep your nose to the grindstone, coach! Good things happen when you do THE RIGHT THING for your team. The truth hurts.

hmm... very... intellectual.
what about the McDaniels Dream? is anyone enamored of that? or is it just the people we disagree with that are enamored of dreams?
Th reason it is more acceptable
to support the coach than the players in any given disagreement is that the coach is the impetus of vision within the organization. He must have an internal picture of his ideal team, and we must trust him to attempt to realize that ideal. By supporting the players vs. the coach, one is pushing for a dichotomy of ideas that is unlikely to lead to positive results. One player does not a winning team make. One coach CAN make a difference, if he doesn’t allow fans or players to taint his attempts to actualize a pure visionary goal.

Not to Marshall
This is a point to anyone who would like to follow his script.
well
At this point I have to say that McDaniels has earned my trust more than Scheffler has. Nothing against Scheffler… I might have doubted McDaniels more at the beginning of the season.
Any chance McD featured Marshall so much
the last few weeks to help boost his trade potential. He may have been planning to get rid of him all along, and this injury just sped things up? Just a thought.
Heard this
MCD wanted 2 get Matt Cassel from NE, he got Gaffney from NE… Cutler is gone, and Gaffney will be the #1 WR Sunday… Probably means nothing
Marshall is a ME first guy.
This is all you need to read to know what kind of player Marshall is:
“Every game I go out there playing to give it my all because of trying to achieve my goals. For me not to be out there probably hurts me more than anybody else. I have a lot of things that I want to achieve, a lot of things that I want to do, and it’s not just for this game. It’s every game that I’ve played in this year.”
What about the TEAMS GOALS Mr. Marshall!
I Read Daniel Graham's Quote
and it appears he was angry with Marshall as well. Let’s be honest, Graham, Eddie Royal (please play Eddie, you’re my favorite Bronco!), Brandon Lloyd, Jabar Gaffney and Brandon Stokley are all solid veterans whose credentials and integrity speak for themselves. I am a big Tony Scheffler guy, I feel about him the way many of you do about Hillis (or at least I did). There is still plenty of talent out here to beat the Chiefs. Need I remind everyone the Steelers (who suck without Polamalu) have to beat a pretty good Dolphins team to qualify for the playoffs and the Jets, coached by clueless Rex Ryan, have to beat the Bengals. Let’s take care of business, buy into the TEAM concept and try to procure a playoff berth. I believe perpetually in my Broncos, especially in times of adversity.

and his growing sacks count. I wonder if McD will accuse him of being selfish if he goes after more sacks.
Dear Rockies-Thank you for a wonderful rollercoaster season! Best turnaround in MLB history to become NL Wild Card Champs.
Garrett Atkins-So Long, Farewell, Auf weidersehen, Goodbye!! You were a great Rockie! GOOD LUCK!
Troy Tulowitzki-MLB's BEST shortstop..nuff said
Yorvit Torrealba- Re-sign!! he's en Fuego!!
Brad Hawpe- I hope I get to see you in a Rockies uniform again!
Dexter Fowler - prowling CF, WC in his talons, leaping Utleys in a single bound!
Question:
Forgive me if this has already been addressed elsewhere, but what kind of value do you guys think Denver can get for Marshall and Scheffler now via trade? I would hope it’s more than just draft picks, I’d like to see value for value. Maybe even package both of them for a quality D lineman or linebacker?
It can’t be soon enough in my opinion. I’m tired of these guys and all of their problems whether attitude or legal.

Looking around the league I see one excellent fit--
Baltimore. They are an old team defensively and solid offensively but need WR help in the worst possible way. If it took a playoff level (20’s— back half of first round) pick for a proven WR1, I don’t see how they don’t make that move. Of course, I’m sure being able to lock Marshall up multi-year would have a great deal to do with it.

I didn't answer you that well, since you were hoping for more than a pick.
Not sure you can get more though— player for player trades are generally not that common. It would also make sense for McDaniels to draft “his guys” instead of getting vets as he is in the process of rebuilding with a young team, and he would want to impose his will on the construction of the team. That means younger players in my eyes, and guys he and his people have scouted and like.

I hate that this kind of things happen with this team, but
I really enjoyed reading the comment thread! Very interesting takes from everyone at MHR. My take is; I like TScheff as a player (don’t personally know him) but it had been said from the beginning that McD’s offense doesn’t lend well to his skills as a receiving tight end, so the writing had been sort of on the wall from the beginning. I thought they/he had incorporated nicely into the offense, lining up as a WR fairly often. The truth if the matter is that we are going to be better off long term without these guys. I always thought that a guy’s first interview for his next job was the way he left his old one. Tony (via Buss Cook; “turd” is a complement for this steaming heap of…), is NOT interviewing well.
The “new” guys that McD brought in have mostly been good locker room guys. I like this approach. I’d rather miss the playoffs short term; than squeak in with guys that don’t want to be here next year and beyond. It seems to me that Josh have a long term perspective, much further beyond 2009 (emphasis on this being his first year). I do not plan on going anywhere with my support of this team, so I line up with what he is doing. This was only the beginning if building a stong foundation for this teams future. It can’t be completed in less than one season and expected to stand in the future. I look forward to the offseason moves and the years to come.

absolutely.
"I just looked across the huddle to see the guys in the huddle with me: great offensive line, great talent at wide receiver, great tight ends, great running backs. If we execute and play the way that we should, it should be tough to stop us."
