NFL - Dolphins fire coordinator Pasqualoni
I think Josh is on record as saying that he admired the Fins defense of 08 – what are the chances this guy finds his way to Denver? I know there’s no major opening but since when has that stopped anyone?
John Clayton's Last Call
Does this mean he’s quitting?
Thanks Doug.

Associate Head Coach?
What is with Mike Shanahan and important sounding titles. I wonder if Bobby Turner will have same job as he had in Denver, just a fancier title.

Well, if he gets a fancier title I think he has to get a fancier paycheck as well, in which case you’ve gotta be happy for BT.

That's exactly what I think
He wants Turner and knows that the only way to interview him is to offer him a position with more responsibility than a RB coach.
It takes neither courage nor intelligence to cheer for a team only when that team wins. The true test of a fan's mettle is the same as it is for a player: Were you there when you were needed?

Yeah, I just read that.
I thought that you could refuse only if the other team wanted to offer the same position.

Would be cool if rules allowed a trade
Actually, they must, since Gruden moved for draft picks. Mr. Turner should be worth at least a 2nd, and Shanahan knows even that would be a bargain.

I think that Josh already has new RB and OL coaches in mind...
So he has decided to just let them go (as they obviously want to…no knock on them for it) and concentrate on getting coaches that are better suited to develop the power style he is looking for.

As predicted by just about everyone one a year ago, the 2010 draft is shaping up as the best draft in a decade. Denver is going to have several great players at any number of positions to choose from when we use our pick (via Chicago) at #10. It won’t be like 2009 when we were hoping for guys to drop.
Keep my fingers crossed that the Pouncy kid (C – Florida) drops to us in round 2.
I like McBath and Bruton but man does the safety position looked stacked in the upcoming draft (Berry, Thomas, Mays, Burnett, Major Wright). There are some amazing prospects at what I think is the most underrated position of importance in the NFL.
The great thing about the 2010 draft is that guys are going to get picked a round later than they would in most drafts. 3rd round picks in 2010 are the equivalent of 2nd rounders in 2009 or 2008. Same with 4th rounder and so on. Should be a fun draft to watch and it will have a big impact on how teams fare in 2010. Too much great talent flooding into the league not to make an impact.
I'm so angry at the Broncos right now.
Question RE: draft
So admittedly I’m no expert at all with draft classes…I honestly hate watching college ball because it looks so little league to me…I was spoiled by getting introduced to the NFL first as a kid.
Anyhow, for you draftniks out there, I have these question: Why is this class so much better than others??? How can you tell that it is so good? I remember hearing last year people saying that it was a weak draft class, but where does this information come from?
"Precipitation, which side are you on?

Not as many underclassmen declared for the 2009 NFL draft as expected and an astonishing number of underclassmen are declaring for the 2010 NFL draft. There are a lot more talented prospects making themselves available for the 2010 draft because they are worried a new CBA will put a rookie salary cap inplace for the 2011 draft. Like they have in the NBA, which severely limited the earnings of guys in their 1st three years in the NBA.
There will be players picked in the 20s of the 2010 draft that would have been Top 10 picks in 2009.
I'm so angry at the Broncos right now.

I have seen a lot of people calling it a
B, B+ draft….where do you get the “best in a decade” vibe from. And I admittedly am not an expert.
Although a deep draft is great,
It doesn’t solve our basic problem. If a draft is deep, it’s deep for everyone.
If Denver has an average draft, we’re no better off than before when compared to the talent of other teams. What we need in each draft is to get better talent than other teams. In the long run our success is tied to drafting better than everyone else regardless of the depth of a particular draft.
One way around this is to stack draft picks for a good year (like the Pats). If we had last year’s picks this year, then we could gain some ground on other teams.
It would be an exceedingly good time to trade players for extra picks
A 3rd or a 4th for Scheff? Great. I saw someone say we could get a 4th for Hillis. That would be amazing this year. This draft will favor teams with a) lots of picks and b) teams with lots of 2nd/3rd round picks.
Say what you will about the Patriots on the fild this year, but Bellichek has done a fantastic job of positioning them for the future. 3 high-round second picks this year in a spectacularly deep draft, plus a top-10 pick next year, when there’s a rookie pay scale and those picks are no longer curses. I tip my hat to the mad genius.
and those drafted palyers
will still be under contract after whatever mess in 2011 shakes out. For some vets, losing a year would be a pretty big setback.
Most likely.
Precision in thought, concision in style, decision in life.

Mcclain with our first
Then Lupati with our 2nd first aquired from Marshall, is this what I’m hearing?
"I played hurt, shot up whatever was needed to win. Call me stupid, maybe, but I wanted to win regardless of the cost to me personally."- Mark Cooper
All depends with what we get if we trade Marshall.
I doubt Denver would use a Top 15 pick on a OG. Sounds like you are hearing too much MHR mumbo jumbo.
I'm so angry at the Broncos right now.
Assuming a first rounder is part of the deal
And further assuming that the trade partner is Baltimore, which seems most logical, a late first is definitely not too late to target a guy like Iupati or Bulaga from Iowa. Top 15, yeah, that might be a stretch.
The guard position has been undervalued for some time, like safety, but that’s starting to change a little bit.
by Remember Keith Kartz! on Jan 12, 2010 1:57 PM MST up reply actions
Balaga is an OT so we don’t need one that high – I also don’t like Iowa linemen after the Gallery debacle. Iupati would make good sense late in round 1. I’d hate to trade Marshall and it will make us instantly much worse, but backfilling Hoch with Iupati would be a great start. Get Pouncey in round 2 and we’d have a good O-line again.
Now if Eddie Royal would just reappear from the dead. A big IF today.
I'm so angry at the Broncos right now.
Right
Forgot that Bulaga was a tackle. Oops. Substitute Asamoah from Illinois in that sentence, although he’s probably more of a high 2nd. I’d take him in a heartbeat.
Gallery was a weird case. Hard to remember a line prospect that had as many people writing down “10 year starter, future HOFer” when he was drafted—and then to fail as miserably as he did, great googly moogly.
He’s become a pretty good guard, anyway. Ferentz at least is a fine teacher of line technique—hope that it shows with Olsen.
by Remember Keith Kartz! on Jan 12, 2010 3:41 PM MST up reply actions
Ferentz is one of the best O-line coaches there is so the fact that Olsen couldn’t make any impact in 2009 behind the dreadful Hamilton/Hoch duo stinks something rotten to me.
The Chargers are starting a 3rd round pick a RG. There is not a very good reason why Denver couldn’t play their 4th rounder from a school with the best O-line coach in college ball.
I'm so angry at the Broncos right now.
Agree 100% about Guard. How could I not after watching s## guard play sink Denver’s season. Seriously – it seems crazy that Hamilton/Hoch could ruin our offense by themselves, but there it was on full display pretty much all season.
What was Keith Kartz?
I'm so angry at the Broncos right now.
Good old Keith. Guy was told not to ski in the offseason, so not only does he ski, he does so in front of a news crew. One of the very few worthwhile o-linemen of the late Reeves/early Phillips era.

McClain would look great next to DJ Williams.
I’d still have Bradford #1 on Denver’s board. I like Orton, I really do… but the guy is not a Super Bowl QB. Do you ever see him winning three or four games in a row in January vs guys like Rivers, Manning, Brady or Flacco?
I'm so angry at the Broncos right now.
I like Bradford too
but it doesn’t matter who is playing QB next year if they don’t shore up the interior OL. And I think they need more help on D first before going QB. That said it really depends on where certain players are available, if they go best player available and so on. As you note above this is going to be a deep draft (which is great for Denver). And guards, even really good ones, often don’t get picked until mid to late 1st round and thereafter. Denver could also trade down for more picks, so who knows. But I like McLain, Iupati and a couple of other players as really filling key needs for the Broncos. Bradford is neat and all but he doesn’t, imho, fill a key need. If the Broncos draft a QB again I’d expect to see it more in middle rounds.
(But then again they need another RB and another WR and another TE… so who knows.)

Where do figure Myron Rolle in that mix?
I share your view on the position and hope we add one more to the mix.
I also researched Mays, looked at a lot game clips and highlight reels, and find myself agreeing with you on him. He doesn’t vibe right, runs his mouth a lot, and doesn’t even seem to try to tackle properly. A lot of his big hits in college will translate to 60 yard rumbles and oodles of YaC in the NFL.

Kudos to Bronco Brass
Good that Broncos heads (I almost used the dreaded word “chiefs”) let their assistants consider other job opportunities. Teams march on and I think in the long run it will be better for McDaniels to get his own, hand-picked line and backfield coaches.
The Broncos also look much more inviting to potential coaches by not getting in the way of promotions.

I honestly don't get the "Dennison will be hard to replace" idea
as much as I like the guy and appreciate what he’s done. I think it was time for a change anyway, and as hard as he’s worked to continue the tradition he’s not exactly Alex Gibbs. I think there will be plenty of good candidates out there to fill those roles.

Bobby Turner Might Make More Money
but it’s obvious where Mr. Bowlen is a classy genius, Snyder is a mindless buffoon that doesn’t know his football. Perhaps more intelligent coaches will make Sndyer look smarter but I think Turner will always treasure his days in Denver.

I won’t miss Turner or Denison. I don’t think either fit in at all with the new regime. Time for McDaniels to fill out his staff with his guys.
If McDaniels proved one thing to me in 2009, its that he knows how to pick a good staff.
