Would you like to have Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson on the Roster?
Hello MHR:
Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson may become available soon.
New Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren and GM Tom Heckert both apparently want to ditch quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson and find somebody new to lead the charge offensively, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
I feel that Kyle Orton will be the starting QB and that Tom Brandstater may move up the food chain. Not sure if Chris Simms will be retained. Is it worth picking up one of these two QBs (if price is right) to fight for a QB spot? If not, who would you rather have? Also, who do you thing Josh McDaniels would choose if different than your choice.
Have fun

Here's my thoughts on the Browns QBs
Brady Quinn is a pretty boy with a noodle arm… Orton has him beat by a mile
Derek Anderson is a poor man’s version of Cutler. Loves to throw deep and to the other team…
Let’s just keep 2 QBs on the roster with Orton and Brandstater. Free up that roster spot for something more important

I would like to draft a QB for the Practice Squad
Not sure how “noodle arm” Brady really is. Not a fan of Derek.

Versatility
Surely we have some players currently on the roster who have played Qback. If not find a New England castoff. You do realize Ben McDaniels played Qback and knows the system?
Ben McDaniels?
Do you mean Josh McDaniels ?

I’m neither for, nor against either Browns QB. But I’m firmly against trading draft picks to pick up a backup player that has nearly zero chance of ever becoming a long-term piece to the current puzzle.
I don’t know how much progress Brandstater has made. So, if the staff feels Brandstater is a viable #2 (which, for what it’s worth, I doubt he’s reached that level yet), then I say ditch Simms and leave the roster spot open. If Brandstater needs more time, then I say ditch Simms and pick up another QB in the open market – one that we don’t have to pay draft picks for (Brady and Quinn would cost us something, maybe in the neighborhood of a 3rd rounder, but I’m just guessing there).
IMO the important thing here isn’t who we get to replace Chris Simms as a guy who might or might not ever have to step in and play for an injured starter, but rather, the point is to make sure we get out of Simms’ contract. He’s set to cost us $3M this year and when he filled in for Orton during the season, he looked very uncomfortable (to put it mildly).
During the Cutler trade Brady Quinn was mentioned as a good possiblity for the Broncos QB
I guess it depends on the price and if Josh thinks it would be a good fit.

True, but that was when we were looking for a replacement at starting QB
I think it’s a different animal entirely, to consider trading giving something for a backup vs giving something in the trade for a starter. Plus, I never heard that McDaniels was interested, just that the analysts thought it would be a good idea because Cleveland had 2 qbs and lots of picks. I’m not sure it was ever confirmed that either party was interested in the others’ QB. I could be wrong though.
as long as we cut simms
he is overpaid (3 mil) and will make almost any offer we give orton look really bad

McNabb may be good
Not sure how long it would take him to learn the system. He would need to be starter immediately if selected.

I would be concerned with the money
Quinn was a first round pick QB so he is going to be expensive and Anderson I believe was given good money a couple years ago when the browns went 10-6. Either would be worth trading for. Let them get cut and maybe we can work out a deal.
absolutely not
Denver doesn’t need to even dabble in the FA QB game this year. The only move Denver makes at QB is to dump Simms. Orton’s been nothing but capable. What’s the fascination with adding a ‘name-brand’ QB?
Brady Quinn is more inaccurate than Ronnie Brown. Derek Anderson’s best quality is that he’s not Brady Quinn.
Denver is already light on picks. We’re not gonna trade for a QB.

I wanted an option that said "Neither"
Quinn to-date: 3 years, 184/353 for 1902 yards, 10 TDs, 9 Ints, Passer Rating of 70.4, 52.1 completion percentage, 5.4 yards/attempt.
How about we give Orton & Brandstater a chance to grow into the system. If we really need a 3rd QB, find a serviceable backup through FA.

If I was the plains dealer I would be questioning the Browns' Quarter Back Coach...Just saying.
Derek Matthew Anderson (born June 15, 1983 in Scappoose, Oregon) is an American football quarterback for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League. He was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He played college football at Oregon State
Baltimore Ravens
Anderson was selected out of Oregon State University by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft (213th overall), but never played for them and was waived on September 20, 2005. The next day he was claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Browns, for whom he currently plays
.
Anderson is 6’6 and lanky for a quarterback, there has to be a reason why the Ravens waived him after drafting him in the 5th round. Don’t know his problem but he can come here and try out…Heck I wouldn’t turn down Doug Flutie if he wanted to try.
If you all remember he was on the wrong side of the coin that Romeo Crennel tossed in 2007
The toss went to Frye and the rest is disgruntled history.

Bring back Elway ...everyone else is comng back later in life. Why not?
I would seriously like to have McNabb or Kevin Kolb as our starter! Kyle Orton is a great #2 and would be able to take over in any situation and maintain continuity, and give us the chance to stay strong in any games he enters ….but as a #1, he’s good, but average….and think our team is better with Kyle on it! And he has great character! He’s the perfect -# 2 NFL prototype, and idnlove to see him back-up McNabb in Denver! IMHO

I think Brady Quinn is vastly underrated
He could be a good pickup to learn from a good QB coach
Verbose in style, dispersion of thought, procrastination in life.
The guy formerly known as ZAPPA
I agree with this for the most part.
I think he still has a lot of room to grow. Something not talked about yet…Quinn obviously played for Weis, so he should be at least a little familiar with a NE style offense. I never followed the Pats a whole lot, so do we know what kind of relationship Weis and Coach McD have? How similar were their offensive philosophies? Did NE run the same offense under McD as they did under Weis?

He's horrid
I’m very glad Denver passed on the “chance” to trade for him last year. Now he has a foot injury to boot. No thanks. Wouldn’t even want him as a street free agent. He got a lot of publicity because of the college he played at and the coach he played for but he’s done nothing in the NFL to lead me to believe he’ll be a starting caliber QB.

Quinn may be OK in the right system...I'm not sure Cleveland even has a viable system to work with.
They trade off their star Tight End and Wide Receiver and they running game was lacking…With Holmgren at the helm things will change and I hope they put it to the Steelers this year…You know…Knock them down a peg or two..

God, I would want neither
Quinn has no accuracy past 5 yards and Anderson has no acuracy under 30 yards. Ship them both to Oakland.

Both QBs in cleveland got screwed last year
the browns traded away winslow and edwards so there was no proven WR to throw to. Winslow was there best rec. and they traded him away for almost nothing. I would Quinn a chance if he would come cheap.
live and die blue and orange
Not interested in either one,
but, I’ll have to admit , I’m not sure what I’d do with the QB’s at the moment aside from getting Orton resigned………

Hello mjdbronco
Do you feel that there are any other free agents worth looking at or is the draft the best option?

I'm suprised Emmett
Normally you have more of a discussion about such topics. Did you have feedback about the other questions in my post?
If not, who would you rather have? Also, who do you thing Josh McDaniels would choose if different than your choice.

Right now, he seems happy with Orton and TB
I’ve mentioned on another couple of threads that I think that there’s a good chance that he’d look at a veteran backup QB this year, since another draft candidate seems (to me) to make the situation more difficult rather than more clear. The issues with both Quinn and Andersen is that they seem to have gotten off to such poor starts that it might be very difficult to pick up McD’s system and perform at a high enough level to give us a good chance to win. The backstory with Simms makes this a little more difficult – taking on a QB with a history that hasn’t been good and asking him to come on if Orton is hurt and step in, cold, and produce is a really tough job.
I haven’t looked carefully at the list of those who will be available – my apologies. Generally, there will be a half dozen or so. I guess that I’d wait to see if there is something – an invitation, talks with agent, etc – to see who is both available and interesting to McD/Xanders.

For sheer ability to play,
I’d go with Jeff Garcia as a great back-up. Unfortunately from what was reported last off-season he still wants to be a starter.
Right
Not everyone is willing to be a backup. Broncos were lucky when they had Kubiak backing up Elway.

I wasn’t trying to be snide, wyoeng – I was in a lot of pain and things can come out sideways. Direct questions always work best if that seems to be happening.

It would be sad if you had to deal with such pain long term (a bummer if even short term).

why wrap up that much money in a back up
Get a young guy with lots to prove and lots to learn. wyoeng if i liked one it would be thigpen.
Thanks mjdbronco
I think that Josh thinks highly of KO. I also feel that Josh wants competition as the starting QB position (all positions really) to drive KO and TB to become better. If there is no real competition the players may become stagnate. If Cleveland releases Quinn (or only asks for very low round draft choice) and Josh thinks high enough to bring him in then I am all for it. Thigpen would also be a good option to Josh to look into.
