Mike Nolan gone as DC in Denver.

According to Jay Glazer via Twitter, Mike Nolan and Josh McDaniels have decided to mutually part ways. What does this mean for our defense and the personnel Nolan's put together? Anyone have any input or insight on this? I really don't have anything else to say about this, except for the fact that this sucks. This really really sucks bad. Best of luck Mr. Nolan. I wish you the best of luck wherever you go.

Also, before everyone starts claiming McD is the antichrist for this, remember that we know nothing about it yet. NFL Network (Michael LombardI) made mention that Nolan eventually wants to be a HC again, which was highly unlikely in Denver anyways. There is always two sides to every story. Don't jump to quick judgements about anything because 9 times out of 10, the quick judgement is wrong.

This really does suck

I just saw that too and was about to post about it, but you beat me to the punch. Apparently it has to do with issues of control. My feeling is that McD wants to have his hand in the defense and Nolan wants to run the defense and has different views. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t there some issue about that (McD wanting to also have a say in the defense) at the beginning of the year or during preseason?

wow

suprising – maybe mcd wants a more traditional 3-4 style D.

well, question is…who’s out next DC????

who’s available?

Maybe

Ben McDaniels,Rob Ryan or Joe Collier?

From a DP Blog Post...

"I can’t say anything other than Josh and I mutually agreed to part ways," Nolan said.

Sounds contentious. Yikes. I don’t see how this could be a good thing.

OK. So McD is trying to take a Mulligan for 2009?

I’m going to go ahead and knee-jerk react and find out the facts later. I think the NFL does this crap on purpose to keep ratings up. “Hey, coaches. You must make at least 3 bone-headed surprise moves each season – preferrably in the off-season, so fans keep watching the Network after their team is out of contention. If you are good and do it for several years, we may let you by with a little less drama in your latter years as being a HC.”

mcdaniels clearly has all the power

he runs the entire franchise.

one thing to consider is that nolan is a former head coach and he obviously has plans to be a future head coach, and im sure he wanted power over the entire defense so that if they were to tank, it would be his fault. last thing a guy wants on his resume when trying to get another head coaching job is a bad season where he couldnt control the entire outcome

as for the power issue, either mcdaniels is destined to be a great coach or he is going to set the organization way back. either way denver is his team, and at this point it’s safe to say it will be for the next 2-3 years at a minimum as well

But you would hope he would stay for two or three seasons to show he could transform a defense, maybe he will be a HC in Buffalo since no one seems to want to coach there.

Regardless of the eventual spin....

No way this helps the Broncos or makes them look any better to the outside world (if that matters)…Nolan clearly made a mark, improved a woeful squad, and this has to be viewed as a flat out, never saw it coming, surprise….there are few (if any) DCs on the market that would be considered an upgrade from Nolan, so no matter how you explain it away, the Broncos took a hit today…the only more surprising development would be if Orton walked away…and I think then we would know there is trouble in paradise….

by Calibroncoboy on Jan 18, 2010 4:44 PM MST reply actions

let the mud slinging and guessing and speculation begin!!

This isn’t that big of a deal in my opinion. Denver’s D had a new scheme this year and a bunch of new players too. Not sure which had more to do with the improvement over last year’s unit, but frankly, I didn’t think our D was that great. Better, not great though.

There’s a lot more to the story than we know, so let’s not assume McD’s on the warpath just yet. Who knows, maybe it was Nolan’s career aspiration, maybe a current or draft personnel quabble, a personal issue, or maybe it was a personality conflict.

I know this doesn’t make the Broncos look any ‘better’ to the outside world, but McD doesn’t give a chargers playoff game about how the organization ‘looks’.

I have heard nothing like that out of Oakland

I live in Oakland and thought he papers are filled with the eventual funeral arrangements for the Cable regime, there has been nothing mentioned about Nolan (though there is some artillery that Davis would like to use….stealing a Bronco DC is likely attractive, and also putting in a coach who is essentialy descended from 49er royalty, so much the better….on the other hand, Nolan was overmatched as a head coach) Davis often surprises, but Jim Fassel has all but begged for the job and I would assume the job would go to him or Denny Green….

So you will support everyone but the HC that is

running your team. that makes no sense. You are all the people that have not liked McDaniels from the start and now is your time to talk trash. Funny how some of you only show up at times like this

I think a real fan has should say so…for the sake of the franchise….

I do not only show up when these things happen. I posted during game threads etc. So be careful of those accusations.

LOL i will accuse whoever I want

you can go back at some of these McD haters and almost all their post are anti McDaniels. they are all negative comments about the HC since he was hired. The truth is their are some people that have hated McDaniels from the start. They loved shanny and think JC is a franchise QB. How could McD trade a Franchise QB, he is running this team into the ground. I do not like this move either but we do not know the whole story and you automatically blame McDaniels and that tells me something. You do not like the man regardless of what he does

Okay, don't accuse me of only coming here to post when something like this happens

I was trying to be polite…

If it turns out that he hires Pees….then I think it will be clear that McDaniels was in fact responsible for Nolan leaving…..

Go over to Johns Post on the Main page

and look at this. The Dolphins asked to interview Nolan to be their DC and Josh probably said NO. Nolan probably would prefer to work in Miami and talked to Mcdaniels today about stepping down. You need to let all the facts surface before you start blaming Mcdaniels.

Are you choosing to overlook Scheffter's reports that McD was speaking with Pees

before Pees chose to not renew his contract? Maybe this is all just serendipitous timing of Pees leaving the Pats and Nolan being requested for an interview.

How do you know McD was talking with Pees

Before the Fins requested to talke with Nolan. Schefter is not saying that on his twitter so i do not know where you are getting this. I read that pees did not renew because of his age and health. There could be a lot more to the story but it sounds like Nolan would rather coach out east then an Denver.

Actually, I have been tough on McD from the start....

but I do think Shanny’s time was up and I do think JC should have gone (although not at that time, I believe I was now wrong and McD was right on that.)…but I can still disagree with much that McD has done. So we don’t all long for the past, just a good future. I still think McD can get this going, but I have lost some confidence.

im a fan of the team, not the coach. I’m not calling for McD’s head, but if I was, I don’t think that makes me any less a fan.

by thedoctor on Jan 18, 2010 5:20 PM MST up reply actions

no single component of the team IS the team though. If a certaon part of the team isn’t getting the job done, then they need to go. Like…Jarvis Moss, say. He’s not getting the job done on the field, making a lot of money, and eating cap space that could be better utilized on other, better players.

Am I bad fan for wanting Moss gone at this point? I would say no. I want my Broncos to do better, and I think they will without Moss. Again, I’m saying this is the case with McD (yet), but I can certainly see how some people might. And I don’t think that makes them less of fans.

by thedoctor on Jan 18, 2010 5:28 PM MST up reply actions

NOT saying this is the case with McD*. oops.

by thedoctor on Jan 18, 2010 5:33 PM MST up reply actions

It seems

that Pees and McD have been talking for awhile now while Nolan was still our DC according to Adam Schefter. Seems to me McDaniels stabbed Nolan in the back so Nolan is leaving for another DC job.

Right Scotty.

McD has caused so much turmoil in only one year on the job that he has cause diehard fans like me to question if he is the right man to lead our Broncos and I don’t think he is but I hope he proves me wrong. But I think and hope he has only 1 more year to prove me wrong. In other words next season should be do or die for McD.

by broncorob on Jan 18, 2010 5:31 PM MST reply actions

Who knows if he caused this, at all?

Maybe Nolan wanted a change of scenery? I think we need to sit and wait for the rest of the story to come out before we jump to conclusions and say that McD forced him out.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

You are

right kentuckybronco and I hope McD turns out to be another Shanahan but I don’t see it happening but I can’t wait for the draft and free agency and next season to start and I will be rooting hard for the Broncos like I do every year.

by broncorob on Jan 18, 2010 5:43 PM MST reply actions

Amen.

Let’s just get the guys we need and move on. Sure, things will be different without Nolan, but different doesn’t always mean worse. It just means different. We may get a new up and coming guy who is a genius and is going to shake up the world of football with his defensive coordinating prowess. Ya never know. Let’s just see how this shakes out.

By the way Joe,

if you could see all the Bronco stuff I have collected over the years you would never question me being a die hard Broncos fan. I just hate what has gone on with the Broncos since McD took over and if you think McD is above criticism we will have to agree to disagree on that.

Good post Skotty.

I wish McD would have denied the Dolphins permission. It seems like McD wanted another guy from NE as his DC no matter how good Nolan was.

And there could be a chicken and the egg scenario

Did Nolan know that McD was talking with Pees, before Miami came calling…it would be intereting to be sure

The defense took a nose dive in the second half of the season and I'm not buying fatigue.

Whatever the problem was my guess that McDaniels wasn’t very pleased with it. He listens to Brian Dawkins and Champ Bailey so maybe they came to the coach and laid it out on the line. Just guessing mind you, but there has to be a specific reason why. McD wouldn’t throw Nolan under the bus unless the is a real problem. I wasn’t pleased and neither was a lot of you.

by bfree2bronc on Jan 18, 2010 5:59 PM MST reply actions

Well, I am upset by this move

But I’m trying to say woo-sahh, and count and breathe. You suggest a very likely scenario. Yet even with that, what could Champ and Dawk have said that Nolan did? If they or McD have a finger on the issue, couldn’t it be fixed? If the system worked early but not later, doesn’t that mean it’s fixable easier than it’s replaceable?

I find it more likely that Nolan didn’t like young McD’s hands in his cookie jar any more than he liked the youngster yelling at him and telling him how to fix the late season decline.

If on the other hand, this is a case of Nolan going to be HC somewhere… I’ll be even more pissed that Coach let him go after only one year. I’d make the guy clean toilets before I’d let him leverage his single year here into a new coaching job.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Jan 18, 2010 6:19 PM MST up reply actions

We'll be glad ...

to pass your thoughts on to your employer especially if a job offer comes to you that you like better than the one you have now. It could be that Nolan likes the beach better than the mountains and has absolutely nothing to do with McDaniels. My take is that this is not abnormal but simply a guy who is leaving one position to take another … and a guy that the media and fans elevated to a higher spot than maybe he should have been placed based on the first 6 games.
