Dolphins officially hire Mike Nolan as DC
Nolan now joins a division headlined by former protégé Rex Ryan, who coached under Nolan while the two were in Baltimore together.

Thanks John
Wow, that was fast (Nolan to Miami)! Are you having MHR Radio this week to discuss this topic (and other items)?
The Dolphins wanted Nolan – and it turns out Nolan wanted the Dolphins – people quit their jobs and move on all the time. Does it suck? Yes, but it is part of the NFL…
The important thing is the Broncos keep a majority of the defensive staff and get a guy in that can CONTINUE the defensive rebuild…

generally there’s a reason though. If i was to quit my job, it would be because of better bennys, better location, more salary, more responsibility, getting away from a bad boss/environment, etc. there doesn’t seem to be a great deal obviously better about Miami than Denver, unless Nolan for some reason loves crime in his backyard.
that leaves something about the previous situation being bad, and him wanting to get away from it. I’m betting it’s a control issue — McDaniels not wanting to give Nolan as much as he wanted.
Maybe Nolan isn’t a hockey fan and the Av success was pissing him off?

umm...better location?
I think people in most of the country would think that Miami is a better location than Denver (not me, I love it here, but most people). And it goes double for a guy who has spent most of his career on the east coast (except for his time in SF, which was still on a coast)
As has often been stated in the cut-throat world of personal financial management....
Loyalty does not equal longevity!!
Nolan was loyal while he was here, but a more appealing offer would certainly be something to jump forward to.
Remember…One must always do whats in their own best interest when it comes to the area of getting paid. (While this sounds selfish, one’s own self interests may be a family….so please take this with a grain of salt.)

is that really THE important thing?
Sure it’s important but…. hopefully we won’t look back on this as a significant point in the decline and failure of just another coach who refuses to delegate or even get along with …anyone.
So much for the let’s wait and see if he’s looking for a HC job… right? He moved LATERALLY. After all the work he put in last year… freaking YIKES! Does ANYBODY BELIEVE IN MCD?
You’re wrong. it’s not THE important thing. It may be the bit that saves the dire situation but the IMPORTANT THING going on from here is that a trend certainly IS developing here. Ne denying it. Maybe coach is hard to get along with. Hell, I’M hard to get along with and I’m quite successful… one could only hope McD shares that rare quality with me….
and I hope you don’t like it.

Owning the Patriots since September 9, 1960
According to a league source, Nolan and Broncos coach Josh McDaniels clashed this season despite Nolan helping the Broncos improve from No. 29 in total defense in 2008 to No. 7 in total defense in 2009.
Nothing to see here

You know...
This is why I hate “news” reports. I mean, I’m going to become a writer and write whatever I want and as long as I say “According to an Anonymous source” or “league source” or whatever, I’m golden…
I think reporters in general have either gotten too lazy and just report rumors and he said she said BS, or let there personal bias effect there report… probably a bit of both actually.

Think of all the times Cutler put the D back on the field with INT's
Cutler hurt our D just as much as anyone in 08

i don't think cutler hurt
the defense any more than orton did. 2008’s defense was the worst piece of crap i’ve ever seen on that side of the ball. cutler get a lot of deserved crap but i don’t think he should shoulder that one.
comparing this year’s orton to 08’s cutler:
cutler had 4 more touchdowns, 6 more interceptions and took 18 less sacks. he also had 700 more yards passing and a little better time of possession than this year’s broncs. if anyone got the shaft from anyone, i think it was cutler and the offense getting screwed by that defense. yuck.
Oh, I'm not debating that the defense is better.
That NFP piece just reminded me of last year’s “2nd best offense in the league” talk.

this comment will be waaaaay down the thread
response to Todd on NFP article: I don’t even have to check that article to know (guess) that Aaron Wilson wrote it. The dude has seen contention in everything McD did last year. I take all of his adverbs and adjectives with a grain of salt.
How a reporter reports something:
A statement by the Broncos was released saying that Nolan and McDaniels are mutually parting ways.
How Wilson reports it:
A contentious statement by the struggling Broncos was released saying that the underappreciated Nolan and the underwhelming McDaniels are mutually parting ways, a move that has probably been on Nolan’s mind for some time.
Chibronx and Colinski pointed out earlier that this kind of commentary lacks falsifiability. Another way of looking at it is as arbitrary. In this case it is arbitrary modification of the subjects, but arbitrary subjects are never far behind. They both require the same intellectual integrity NOT to engage in them….

Thanks for the Measured Approach, John
I’ve given McDaniels every benefit of the doubt so far, and I found it easy to do so. Marshall is a talented possession receiver, but a headcase. Jay Cutler’s enough of a problem guy that even Champ Bailey will publicly talk trash about him. Easy for me to go with the coach on those. Very easy.
But my generous spirit is starting to wane. I’m sympathetic in principle to the idea of ignoring the media, but it is hard to be generous when the results on the field were pretty good and there is no other information to go on. How could both sides not have been happy with such a massive turnaround in defensive fortunes? I get the idea that Nolan would like to be a head coach again, and I see coaching for Parcells as a good career step. But feeling good about the coach requires increasing amount of speculation. Unpleasant.
I’m also skeptical about Pees, since he presided over the period of increased defensive meltdowns in New England.
The saving grace here may be that talent, in addition scheme, had a lot to do with the turnaround. And for better off worse, the coach owns the decisions on talent. If we’re going to yell at him about Marshall and Alphonso Smith, he has to get credit for Dawkins. And Hill. And Goodman. And McBath. And Davis. And Reid. And McBean. And standing doom up.
if it wasn't this year, it would've been next year
We were just leasing Nolan. He’s too good to be just a DC. Purely speculation, but if MIA gave Nolan some greater authority in defense that he didn’t have here what would you think of McDaniels? Would McDaniels be meddlesome to be in on the defensive gameplans? Would things of that nature make Mike go elsewhere? If so, should the HC step back to hold onto his DC for just one more year?
I'm glad we had this talk.

Believe me, Exile, we’re generally on the same page. What I’m saying is that I’m starting to be frustrated by the amount of speculation required to see the sense in things. Problems with Cutler and Marshall, and Scheffler’s crummy attitude, were well documented. I am growing frustrated with searching around for explanations of seemingly confusing decisions….
I know we see things closely. I read your comments all the time...
just curious to your thoughts and some other people here. This is the first news that made me say whaaaa-the?
It makes sense to me (in my mind I have no proof) that Nolan wanted more control over the Defense though. McDaniels had stated previously this year that he was in on the defensive gameplans and not just the offense. The fact he’s been a OC/DC didn’t make me think it was unusual or woulda been an issue till yesterday. Mutual parting seems to fit in my mind if Nolan wants control, but the HC wants some say too. I would’ve like to see Nolan stay, but if he bristles at a HC in on the gameplan, that’s Nolan’s choice. Who’s to say how much McDaniels was “involved” as he’s got plenty on his plate (so not much in my mind)… though Nolan, with his resume and previous HC experience, it would make sense any overlooking wouldn’t jive quite right.
I'm glad we had this talk.

Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks
McDaniels appears to be a fair man when dealing with Pat Bowlen's employees
Pat Bowlen’s employees want to explore other options and McDaniels must have final say but being a fair man, he’s letting them do it. Nolan was under contract, McDaniels had every right to hold him to it but permitted him to interview probably knowing he was going to go. I assume McDaniels had (has) a ready replacement (Dave Pees) lined-up leaving little to chance.

I really see this as a downgrade
Everyone knows that the New England Defense is run by Belichick, Mangini was the DC and then he began screwing up the defense so Belichick took control over it, which look like what happened again this year. I wish Nolan the best of luck, but I am sad to see hm leave, I would of loved to see him have three years to put together something special.

Seriously folks
We had 2 defenses ….. the 6-0 defense we all loved…. remember everyone that hated McDaniels saying the reason we were good was because of Mike Nolan, while still bashing McDaniels?
Then the 2-8 Broncos that were as easy as the 2008 defense to run on and even more so.
No one bashed Nolan then, they all still bashed McDaniels. Maybe, just maybe, Josh looked at the films again and realized we didn’t improve on defense and had some issues with it. I had some issues with the complete 2nd strategy against the Chargers (especially anticipating Orton not playing). Remember how we hit and blitzed the Chargers in SD? A Gap blitzes, pressure everywhere. Remember Sunday what the Jets did? Why wasn’t that our game plan in Denver against them?
I will miss Mike Nolan, but Spags, Jimmie Johnson or Rex Ryan he hasn’t been.
I can only hope that what I read from a Pats fan today is true. Dean Pees had too many missing players to have a good defense with them the last 2 years.
I just want to win darn it! I want to see the Chargers miss the playoffs so I can laugh like a madman how their AFC dynasty never led to a Super Bowl appearance.
I want to score 30 points a game again. I don’t want anymore prima donnas. i want 53 Brian Dawkins, John Elways, Terrill Davis, Kyle Ortons, Al Wilsons, Steve Atwaters and Eddie McCaffreys. Guys who want to play and want to lead in Denver for the Broncos!

McDaniels
has turned the Broncos into a trainwreck. Our 6-0 start was a pleasant suprise but we are really more of the pitiful team I suffered watching the 2nd half of the season. Bottom line is McDaniels will either get us to the playoffs in 2010 and have the chance to be the Broncos head coach for several seasons or we miss the playoffs in 2010 and Bowlen starts from scratch again. One thing that might give McDaniels a 3rd year even if the Broncos miss the playoffs next season is the point Jeff Legwald made in the Denver Post today which is owners want stability in their coaching staffs after the 2010 season is over so Bowlen might not want to have to pay off McDaniels and his staff and then pay a totally new staff also when there might not be a football season in 2011. I still hold out hope there will be an agreement made and we have football in 2011 but from everything I read things are pretty ugly at the negotiating table now but they may wait until the 11th hour to come to an agreement. I can’t survive a year without the Broncos and the NFL and hopefully I won’t have to try to.

Question What was Shannys record with a HOF QB his first year in denver
oh yea 8-8. Almost no HC come in their first year and have great success. Look at most of the other rookie HC and they are all picking very high in the draft and have no more then 4 wins on the season. Going 6-0 is the worst thing that could have happened to McDaniels because it changed everyones expectations of the team. If we would have gone 8-8 but spred the wins and losses out more people would not be freaking out nearly as much. If we would have gone 2-8 to start the season and then won our last 6 games people would probably be praising the guy.

very true. well said.
But that didn’t happen. Not to read too much significance into the finish vs the start (there are some very legit reasons for this) but that fact is, we began strong and finished weak. And then several key elements jumped ship….
if? really?
FACT.
Let’s see where we go from here and how many people McD can find who believe… because right now if we were to subtract the status quo here… and the coaches who subtracted themselves…. the count is pretty damn low.
Meanwhile….. Screw a lot of people who don’t want to go through the hard times of rebuilding!! Here’s to our young coach keeping his balls in the fire, kicking all doubters to the curb, finding some like minds, trusting them (!!) and proving the world wrong!!!

McDaniels is really wearing on me. He seems to create a lot more holes than fill them. Yeah they gave up 300 yards to the Chiefs but the offense sure didn’t help them, especially during the 2-8 stretch. I’m beginning to think that McD is a big tool. He may be really smart, but he needs to cut out trying to be Bill Parcells.
