Marshall for 1st Round WR & 3rd Rounder

I don't understand why so many people think that this would be such a great idea. Why should we trade our All-Pro WR for two draft picks, and pick up a WR like Dez Bryant in the first? Dez Bryant may have been a great college WR, but he has yet to play in an NFL game. Heck, he hasn't even played a down of football in a year. Also, top 10 picks cost some money, especially WR's.

Top 10 Recent Picked Receivers

2009- Darius Heyward-Bey- #7- 5 yr. 38.25 mil, $23.5 mil guaranteed

2009- Michael Crabtree- #10- 6 yr. $32 mil, 17 mil guaranteed

2007- Calvin Johnson- #2- 6 yr. 55.5 mil, 27.178 guaranteed

2007- Ted Ginn Jr.- #9- 5 yr. 19.6 mil, 14 mil guaranteed

Other Previous #10 picks

2008- Jerod Mayo- 5 yr. 18.9 mil, 13.8 mil guaranteed

2007- Amobi Okoye- 6 yr. 15.4 mil, 12.785 guaranteed

Well, I think we all get the picture. I would suspect that Dez Bryant would want at least 6 yr. $32 mil contract with $17 guaranteed (same as Michael Crabtree). Instead of picking up a unproven WR through the draft, (many who end up being busts... ahem.. Darius Heyward-Bey) why don't we spend that money on a different position that is more proven through the draft, or why don't we spend that money Marshall or other FA's. I don't get why we would pick up Bryant with the #10 pick, especially with so many other needs. Someone please explain!

I agree completely.

I have little to no interest in a first round WR.

+1.

Hate the idea of drafting Dez Bryant in round 1. Or any WR in round 1 for that matter.

I'm so angry at the Broncos right now.

I agree.....lets go line help, take a vertical threat late rounds and workk this crap out with Marshall now. Get rid of Sheffler though.....I am over that guy!

100% agree, boydy

it seems to be a foregone conclusion that marshall’s gone. i hope that’s not true and i think it would be a huge mistake. (T.J. “Who’syourmomma” was on espn this morning saying that BMarsh is the best receiver in football!). at some point mcD needs to work with difficult characters and prima donnas — sorry, it’s professional sports. start with marshall, please.

as for sheff, i still like him but, eh, his departure wouldn’t keep me up at night.

by oxmouth on Jan 20, 2010 11:46 AM MST up reply actions

I agree with you on Marshall. But I’m glad it’s not my money that goes to pay him.

Scheff doesn’t fit into Denver’s O. No point of keeping him around. Kind of a waste of a roster spot really.

I'm so angry at the Broncos right now.

Count me in on that opinion…WR isn’t where we need help the most at all by a long shot though I would like to see the Beast move on

Agreed

Its not even that i dont like Dez. I just dont think we need a WR at all, even if we trade BMarsh. Gaff is fine, and McD said he wants to involve Royal more. And then we got Stoke so really, so right now you can only say we need a #4 WR, but really, thats a stretch to say that. Plus, I like McKinlly going into next year, and theres always brandon lloyd

what's up Higgy

I wouldn’t mistake what comments are for “everyone” thinks its a good idea. It may “look” like a good idea because some can see it as replacing talent (apples) with talent (oranges).

I’m not against picking a 1st round WR, but not to replace marshal. That’s just going to setup bad expectations for the kid when it takes at least 2 years to contribute in the NFL as a WR. Just ask Crabtree. Royal was the rare exception.

I'm glad we had this talk.

true dat

he was paid attention to like he was a high-profile #1-pick receiver a bit this year. Seemed like his technique (or learning of it) got exposed getting off jams and into his routes. Here’s hoping to the 3rd year breakout.

I'm glad we had this talk.

sorry.

I didn’t mean “everyone” literally, its just that it seems to be a significant opinion for many of the MHR followers.

it's all good...

I just know there’s a huge slient, rational majority here that I only see pop on here and there. It’s a significant opinion (dez pick) for those who post and comment. Then again, opinions sway greatly from now till draft day. This site averages 8.7k visits per day (not visitors, but visits) so there’s thousands of eyes that aren’t commenting pro or con.

I'm glad we had this talk.

I don't think we should keep Marshall

He is way too big of a headache and he is inconsistent in his effort. We should get a receiver in the draft for sure (preferably in the first 3 rounds) because I don’t think we can go with Jabs, Royal, Stokley, Lloyd, McKinley, Willis and feel safe.

Eddie Royal will have a breakout season in 2010. Count on it.

by stedtfeld on Jan 20, 2010 6:36 AM MST reply actions

You know what a real headache was in 2009. Eddie Royal’s massive drop off in play and production. It was a much bigger problem than BMs attitude.

I'm so angry at the Broncos right now.

by McGeorge on Jan 20, 2010 8:17 AM MST up reply actions

I agree with that...

McDaniles played him as well as he can.
He struggles against the bump and getting seperation, which is REALLY needed as a slot guy. No wonder we never saw him out of the slot. He needs to do a LOT of work in the off season.
I think there would be no one more disappointed than McDaniels. he knew he had a Wleker type with more explosiveness and skills, but Eddie failed to develop.

I think we definitly can go into the season with those WRS

We’ve been spoiled with such great depth at WR. Having 3 solid WR’s on your roster is really good. I think if we get picks for BMarsh, we should use them to address other needs, namely OL and DL. I cant stress enough how important those are, and how not important WR is for us

by DBroncs1414 on Jan 20, 2010 10:14 AM MST up reply actions

To understand a player like Marshall, you only have to look as deep as your pocketbook. Its jus that simple!

However, as much as I really do like BMarsh, I really think he needs a change of scenary. The Miami and Batlimore blogs are bubbling over with thoughts of acquiring him. Those teams, unlike Seattle are willing to give up picks, players, etc to get him. I really think Gaffney, Royal, Stokely, and another WR could do the job. Gaffney proved that if you find him, he will catch anything thrown to him. You know what, so did Brandon Lloyd. BUT…if we lose Marshall, we have to direct a couple of picks after the 2nd rnd to WR’s. There many good, big, talented kids coming out (Denario Alexander) who might be a great fit. I’d love Dez Bryant but he’s too high, too much money, with NO experience.

I don't disagree with the value

WR in the 1st round are a risky proposition at best, I do think Dez Bryant has a lower risk than most. If we do keep Marshall, he will be making more than what we would pay a 1st rounder at any rate. But I wouldn’t mind if we went after other positions in the draft in the 1st round.

I don't think

that Dez Bryant is a lower risk than most. He’s a freak, but he hasn’t played football in a year. How much can that change a player? Who knows.

Besides, wouldn’t you rather have your money tied up in an All-Pro receiver than a rookie? Even if Marshall’s off field antics keep going on, we can still trade him for a 1st and a 3rd. Let’s see if he can change, and if he doesn’t, we’ll trade him. Most NFL teams would take a high-risk high-reward guy. Finally, what happens if we tie up a bunch of money into Dez Bryant and he turns into a bust? He’d be like another Jarvis Moss, a 1st round player getting paid a lot that no one wants to trade for.

Marshall doesn’t only have a ton of value to this team, but his trade value is also very high.

by higgyhoops12 on Jan 20, 2010 9:39 PM MST up reply actions

I'm still a much bigger proponent....

of a draft pick and a proven player. Trading proven players for only draft picks means we are 3 years a way and in a rebuilding era. McD needs to do what he did for Cutler and get a proven NFL player AND draft picks. In this case, I would prefer a proven interior O-lineman and draft picks.

haha, TJ Whosyourmama just wants another good receiver on his team.

Maybe flattery will land BMarsh in Seattle. Who knows? He better start singing the praises of some QBs, too, in my opinion.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Not sure H-bey is a legitimate bust....

He was at best a late 1st rounder, who was drafted top 10 because the Raiders wet themselves over his 40 time. No other team takes him in the top 20, and he may not have gone in the first round at all. C. Johnson is a great receiver, Ginn is good (not sure if he’s top10 pick good, but it could be argued), and Crabtree is unknown.

That being said, I agree that BM leaving and us picking up Dez doesn’t sit well with me. I’d rather pick up McClain to fill in at ILB and then look at trading DJ for Boldin to bolster the WR spot (not sure how Boldin vs. DJ stacks up, some other considerations might be in order) but you get my drift.

by Kgrone on Jan 20, 2010 5:41 PM MST reply actions

Agreed that it's too

early to tell on him since he was hurt; however, he only had 9 catches in the 11 games he played in.

Also, I wasn’t saying that the other receivers were busts, just simply saying that WR in the first round are questionable picks. Especially one that hasn’t played in a year.

by higgyhoops12 on Jan 20, 2010 9:34 PM MST up reply actions

Sure...

and I’m not saying that Bey is a quality player at all. I’m just saying I don’t think he really fits in a discussion of top 10 picks because there’s no way that under normal circumstances he’s a top 10 pick. Nobody in the league had him rated that highly outside the senile Mr. Davis.

I agree with pretty much everything you’ve said, I just don’t think you can look at Bey while making a judgement on drafting a receiver in the top 10, because anyone we pick that highly would be seen as being talented on that level and Bey never was seen that way.
