Horse Tracks 1/21/10 - Former Bills RBs Coach Eric Studesville reportedly accepts same position for Broncos

Horse_tracks_new_logo_medium

"Studesville, who also has been the running backs coach for the Giants, has coached Tiki Barber, Willis McGahee, Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson — all 1,000-yard rushers in the NFL."

DP - Ty Law open to returning to Denver - Lindsay Jones

"Denver fans need to be patient with McDaniels — he showed progress in his first year, and next year he’ll be even better. As the Broncos continue to add talent to their roster, they’ll become factors in the AFC West."

"Mike Nolan's decision to part ways with Josh McDaniels seems to be a clear-cut example of colleagues who had a different vision for how things should take place...You can bet unsung players who grew into starting roles under Nolan in Denver, like defensive end Ryan McBean and outside linebacker Mario Haggan, are wondering how this change may impact them. Heck, the only reason Broncos nose tackle Ron Fields was in Denver in the first place is because of the impression he made on Nolan while he was the head coach in San Francisco."

Star-divide

CSI - Blueprint for the Broncos - Ralph Routon

"By almost every statistical measure, the offense McDaniels found was better than the one he created." How about turnovers? Those count for anything? No, they're just an afterthought?

DPP - Woody's Mailbag: Discussing the draft

"Jedd Fisch has decided to return to the National Football League and has accepted a position on Pete Carroll’s new staff with the Seattle Seahawks."

"Pete Carroll's coaching staff is nearly complete with the addition of long-time Denver Broncos assistant Pat McPherson as the Seahawks' tight end coach."

Oh, Woody........
They can grab one of those “other” quarterbacks in the mid rounds, but you know that Josh thinks he can find a quarterback without drafting high. Think Tom Brady, Matt Cassel and even the guy they got here. None of the three went in the first round.

I wonder if Woody actually knows Brandstater’s name? I sure hope this is a joke…..

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Disagree

I think Woody emotes, and is sometimes wrong, but often right in his assessments.

Krieger is more analytical and balanced.

Kiis is the one who drives me crazy, I think he often spouts what he is told without putting it through an analytical framework.

I don’t think Klis knows a football from a baseball.

Lindsey Jones doesn’t know a football from a beach ball.

The DP is hurting for talent since Adam Schefter left.

is it brain surgery?

i mean, schefter’s pretty much building relationships and gathering information via cellphone. it doesn’t seem like it should be a tough gig to replace, but apparently it is. even espn’s second tier guys are mort and that mustachioed guy who pretty much does dallas. (why does that sound like a porn?) oh, and rachel nichols, who is absolutely lost when brett favre is actually doing something other than throwing footballs to high school receivers.

i always liked hearing from schefter when he was here but i never realized how much til this year. and another body blow to denver anything has been the death of the rocky mtn. news. i swear you could almost watch DP writers mail it in after that. dang.

by oxmouth on Jan 21, 2010 12:43 PM MST up reply actions

Since Klis and Lindsey Since Klis and Jones are unabashed cheerleaders for the McDaniels administration in the same way Paige and Krieger are always hammering McDaniels relentlessly – I just wanted to throw into the mix that all four are subpar to outright hacks.

I saw Ted Bartlett give Jones a shout out the other day and it made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. She is an awful writer/reporter even if she delivers a message he generally likes.

krieger— i like him. partly because when i think he and i are on the same page he starts bashing on something i like or praising someone (the monforts) i think should be run out of town. he’s also that voice crying in the wilderness at any given press conference who asks hard questions. i think he hasn’t figured out that he’s with the DP now and no longer needs to work hard.

woodrow—never liked him but i’ve started being okay with him, mostly because, in a world of east coast sports, he’s kind of become the denver mascot. sure, it’s not based on talent or anything but, well, guilty as charged.

the other two— sheesh. plain and simple: pick it up. do SOMEthing. unlike the krieger and paige, they’re not opinion people, they’re info people. when’s the last big scoop either of them have had? schefter knows 9 times more about the broncs than they do and he hasn’t worked for them in years.

did i miss anyone? (kiszla). nope, i guess that’s my take then.

But I couldn’t stand his writing. I thought his sports knowledge was inferior. Maybe it is a small town Homer mentality that he showed that really turned me off. Let’s just say I was happy he retired from the Gazette. I don’t like David Ramsey either. It could be my dislike of Opinion writers in general, but I think Frank Schwab is an outstanding improvement over both of them.

Ah, but the magic is

that the underpinnings of the MAC OS is Unix – the relatively same thing as Linux. Therefore, all that scripting is still imminently possible. Seeing as how you can also run Windows on it when needed, you’ve got three OSes on the same machine. Versatile – yes, expensive – yes, worth it – maybe.

I do not know why I even read woody

he is such a hack. I loved the noter from Wes Bunting from the East vs West Shrine game. I think that game is this saturday and I hope NFL Network is airing it so I can watch it. by gnarlybroncodude on Jan 21, 2010 9:54 AM MST reply actions

I've got some posts planned for the Shrine Game

There are a number of kids that deserve to be noted. The Dlines really seem to be seeing one on one success so far, especially Greg Hardy. I’m looking for data as to whether this is a sign of late depth in the DL class, or if people need to be targetting their OL early and often…. Probably a bit of both.

And the game is this saturday at 3pm est. You can view the rosters here, and as I mentioned, I’ll be putting up some posts to highlight some of the more interesting prospects.

IMO, Pro Bowl births and All Pro teams are often awarded a year late. For instance, Clady getting All Pro in 2009, when he really should have won this award in 2008, but not so much in 2009.

He’ll probably have a bounce back year in 2010, actually earn All Pro status, but miss out on the Pro Bowl and All Pro selection anyway.

Pretty much. Sort of like

by underdog on Jan 21, 2010 10:03 AM MST up reply actions

Since it’s a popularity contest and people love to just repeat what they hear, I’m sure Clady will continue to be a Pro Bowler and All-Pro for many years to come, even if he were to regress and/or remain status quo for the remainder of his career. Then, after a 12-year career with 8 or 10 Pro Bowls under his belt, he’ll be a shoo-in for the HOF even if he doesn’t deserve entry…

NYC – you are reaching on the Krieger piece.

We did have far fewer TOs, better field position and a better D giving us more chances – yet the O still regressed.

If you were not disappointed in how our offense played in 2009, I’d be shocked and I’d be left having to accuse you of lying to yourself.

I didn’t say I wasn’t disappointed. Of course I was. Perhaps I chose the wrong line to pick on, but I didn’t like the column. If I’m a young NFL head coach, someone who’s been dreaming of being a HC my whole life, there’s no way in hell that I’m going to be half-assed and adapt to someone else’s defensive system and abandon what I truly believe in. I’m thinking this could be my only and greatest chance to be a head coach in the NFL, and I’m not going to screw it up by not being true to my convictions. I’m going to make sure I do things the way I believe they should be done. If that doesn’t work out and I still have a job (or can get a new one), then I will adapt my beliefs to improve.

You did pick a weird line to pick on if your complaint is really about the D and Mike Nolan’s departure.

It’s a bummer we had to lose Nolan. Hiring Nolan may have been the single most successful decision McDaniels made in his rookie season. Hope he has another good candidate up his sleeve.

Mike Nolan’s D was a heck of a lot more responsible for the 8 wins in 2009 than McDaniel’s offense. McDaniel’s offense can take most of the credit for 6 or 7 of the losses.

San Diego Super Chokers – The annual preseason Champs, eternal post season chumps. Stay Classy

by McGeorge on Jan 21, 2010 11:41 AM MST up reply actions   1 recs

You have to give some credit to McD for the D

The major reason for the improvement was because McD brought in players who were huge upgrades in talent than what Shanny had in 08. We went from 26th in pass D in 08 to 3rd. We went from 27th in run D to 26th. The improvement in our D was with our passing D not our running D. Don’t you think that replacing Manual, McCree, Bly, and Bell with Dawkins, Hill, Goodman, & Law had something to do with that improvement in our pass D? Well those were McD’s moves, not Nolan’s.

I give Nolan credit, he ran a good D for us especially in the first part of the year. But I give a lot of credit to McD as well for building a much improved defense. I think a lot of people overlook this and give all of the credit to Nolan for our improvement in D while giving none to McD.

We trade Marshal and out pick to the Giants for their 1st 2nd and 3rd rounder. Why dont we just trade him for their 1st and 3rd and keep our First. We would still have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds but we would have the 10/11 and the 14th pick to get really good talent
